REVIEWS OF Charles H. Wright Museum IN Michigan

This museum is dedicated to the advancement and preservation of African-American history and black culture. I enjoy every exhibit, learning new details every visit; my favorite is the “Inspiring Minds.” I’ve helped host Science Bowls, Senior Pinning and visited for Kwanzaa, and community events focus on developing a stronger city. Visit, support and make a difference with The Wright people by your side.

Ingramar Miller

This is an amazing venue. The person that helped me upon my arrival, Erica, was just as amazing and helpful.

Nancy Sheryce Gilbert

went to the African American world festival any Troy over the weekend and I had the opportunity to visit a great exhibit at the Charles H Wright Museum of African American history. I would advise everyone to visit the Charles H. Wright Museums, 'And Still I Rise" exhibit. This is a phenomenal depiction on the history of slavery. Unless you know where the African American culture has been where they come from and where they're going. This culture has come a long way and they should be respected for it.

Great experience my daughter had a tribute ❤️ for June tenth.

I visited the Charles H. Wright Museum’s exhibit entitled ‘Paradox of Liberty: Slavery at Jefferson's Monticello’. I was impressed by the breadth and depth of the materials provided. What looks on the surface to be a simple display is a powerful and rich collection of information and materials important to every American. I recommend a visit to the Charles H. Wright Museum in order to see this display. This exhibition brings out details of the life and times of Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemmings that are not commonly known. In fact the story behind the relationship Jefferson and Hemmings, a relationship which spanned their lifetimes and produced six children who grew to adulthood and one who died, tragically, very young. This story has, I have learned, has been denied, misconstrued and left alone. This is unfortunate in many ways. Miss Hemmings and Mister Jefferson began their relationship when she was just sixteen and bound to slavery at the celebrated Monticello plantation in the Colony of Virginia. Their children went on to grow and prosper in their own ways battling oppression and seeking liberty for themselves and all of us. The exhibit is tastefully done though not sanitized. What has been unspoken and hidden for a very long time is literally on display in a well-lit, professionally designed exhibit focusing on the human aspects of the inhuman practice of slavery and the victory of the human spirit. I believe the Charles H. Wright has produced something which focuses on family, life and love and finally brings to the fore the undercurrent and background of anger, indentured servitude, slavery and all the negative underpinnings of that time in our history as a nation and a people. I recommend this exhibit and encourage others to visit it either alone, with family in tow or through school and university class visits. It is like a window on a world I knew existed but could never see because the window was obscured and the visions and truth behind it hidden from me. I am thankful that the Charles H. Wright Museum has crafted this exhibit, and so, has enlarged my view on the world in which I live. After you view this focal point of distilled American history why not take some time to visit the rest of the museum? Our journey has just begun.

Want to go again. There is too much history for just one trip. Bring friends on this trip.It was well worth it.

Cheeks Joe

Good place to learn a little about black history

Kishore Babu

One of the best place to know the history behind. Guide is polite and friendly. She shared the knowledge of every corner around the museum.

Jesse Brown

The Wright always has the best community and cultural events and activities in the city of Detroit. As a self proclaimed Detroit Ambassador I always bring my out of town guests here and recommend them to sew this unique bit of Detroit's history and the African American experience. I suggest that you take a tour and not just do an independent walk through. It is well worth it and will greatly add to your visit. I took my family here during our reunion and they loved it. If you haven't been to the African World Festival, it's a must and an annual event for me and my friends and family.

Danyelle Orr-McNeil

Every time I visit I see or learn something new! This is not a one-time kinda museum. And my mission is to bring and help educate all my friends and family about the importance of bringing our children here to learn not just our history, but history period. I absolutely love it here.

pam obioha

Loved it, Loved it. What a wonderful experience. I would like to go back and spend more time. So much knowledge and history to be shared. What a eye opening opportunity. To see what I have read in books gave me a better understanding on what really happened. Take the time to fill what others have lived.

Deanna Craig

My kids attended Camp Africa and learned a lot and had a fun experience. The museum is beautiful as well. Definitely a must see for the family.

Shirley Herbert

I love the knowledgeable guides that explained each exhibit before we went inside. The excitement of the host spread to us. The realistic exhibits took us back into time to feel the full effect of how our ancestors lived.

Julius Smith

Wonderful, amazing experience!!!! The trip was by far way too short!! Plan to lose yourself in the adventure!!!! I was wonderfully lost exploring the experience!

Tyree Guyton

I love the historical art and events

Dorothy Slay

We were there for the African World Festival.....loved the vendors tht come from different states

Tiffany Matthews

Absolutely PHENOMENAL.. IT'S FEED YOUR MIND WITH KNOWLEDGE OF THE TRIALS WE HAVE ENDURED. AWAKENING YOUR SPIRITS and touch your emotions. We RAISE and may continue to DEPLETE the statistics.. Rebirth of BLACK BOTTOM.

Pam Brooks

I actually went to the African American Festival which was outside of the Museum. It was great! The entertainment was excellent! The crowd was great. Everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. I've been going every year for several years. I absolutely love going.

Matsha Turner

Paid my respects to the Honorable Judge Damon Keith. He will be dearly missed.

Thomas Taylor

Overall, the museum was good. The parking is not free but street parking was $1.00 for 4 hours if you can find an open space. When I visited the museum handicap access was not operable.

frankisha fulton

Parking was a task...but the museum was awesome...the African World festival was great...people from all walks of life were there

Cherise Mckay

This museum was beautiful. I thought when i paid the $7 that it wasn't gonna be much to see. I was WRONG. this museum gives you more for the $7 dollars. I really found the exibits interesting. Once again, the visit can be sad at the same time because it goes back into history. Film watching and pictures that will make you hate people that tortured the slaves. So sad. If you are in Detroit, check it out. Parking is across the street in front of CVS if you cannot get in front of the door of the museum. And the lady that greet people at the door had a friendly personality. Oh and by the way if you are touring the museum and see someone taking pictures by all means get on that phone right away and call and security will be up in a heart beat. I caught a woman taking pictures and yes i called the front desk because its not fair to everyone else.

Darlene Bee

The setting, the atmosphere was very loving. I enjoyed celebrating Greater Life Apostolic 90th church anniversary!

Liz Houston

Museum is great. Person at the entrance to busy hold conversation to provide direction. It's downstairs but did not tell you how to get downstairs.

Delores Adams

The museum was awesome. The Monticello exhibit was educational and informational and the "Still We Rise Exhibit" was thought provoking and inspiring.

Tonya Fairley

A true Detroit treasure! Local, national, and global history of the African/African American history. The replica of a slave ship is surreal and the gift shop is awesome.

The A2Z Group

We have had the opportunity to visit some of the largest black museums in the country the one in Washington DC, Philadelphia & Cincinnati... But none of those brought to life the experience of being stored in a slave ship as cargo... It is a visual and autubel experience that you will never forget. It also led to us purchasing a family membership to bring back the remainder of our family and grand kids to see and hear the experience.

Shaun Picasso

Such a beautiful place to visit no matter what event is going on. The people there are always professional, courteous, and accommodating.

Kourtney Thompson

The museum is structurally magnificent and easy to navigate. I enjoyed the displays and the information that was presented. It was very uplifting. It uplifted me so much that purchased a membership.

Kieran Hayde

Brilliant museum!! The we will rise again exhibition is comprehensive and inventively laid out. We spent a good 2 hours in this part and I wish we’d had more time. We were there for a small Aretha Franklin exhibition and a couple of others on fashion and hair. I really can’t speak highly enough of this museum and it’s staff. A must for all visits to Detroit and such an important part of the city’s modern history.

Cristian L.

A beautiful place to learn about humankind's mistakes. A very deep and powerful history takes you to wrong doings from the past, offering in the same time the key to avoid them in the future. The staff was very professional and helpful. You can use a guide, but the gallery is self explanatory. Don't miss it if you are in Detroit!

Chizzy Wizzy

I learned so much. Come here to learn black history

Philip Smalls

Beautiful place very clean and respectful

Michael Lund

I love the Charles H. Wright Museum. We just moved to Detroit and we were told to go here right away. I'm so glad we went. We've been back and every time we learn more.

Josiah Mathews

Amazing! A cultural education everyone should experience! Beautiful historical tour...

Dee Harris

I loved my experience here! My students and I learned so much. We have truly been inspired to practice empathy towards each other and respect our diverse history.

auntieMaine

Their main exhibition is excellent. It makes you appreciate what my ancestors went through. It makes me sad, enraged, heart broken, and proud to name a few. You also see how horrible white ppl are and the jealousy that led to many horrific history of this country.

Minnie Simmons

We found this museum to be a very important lesson in history. From the minute we walked in the door to our exit about 4 hours later we learned so much. The displays are interesting, though to get the most out of them there is quite a bit of reading to do. A few of the exhibits need some updating, but overall most of the displays were interesting and well-done. The staff was very friendly and helpful making sure we got the most out of our visit.

Maria Fox

This is an amazing and powerful museum, an important educational experience for anyone. The thought and time that are put into the “And Still We Rise” exhibit was breath taking. Easily takes 2+ hours but is engaging the entire time. An extremely good value for the tickets too, only $7 for adults! You will not regret this one bit. One thing to note is that you can not take photos inside any of the exhibits.

Bts Army

Super cool place to go when you wanna learn about the past when slaves were around, service was chill, cool, and funny(well funny in the beginning for field trips )

Sharon Anderson

The "And Still We Rise" exhibit is breathtakingly well executed. The staff are warm, welcoming and professional. The gift shop is a treat. The facility well kept. It was the perfect Mother's Day outing for my friends and me. When I return to Michigan, I will plan to visit again.

Kim Coleman

ALAN HARRISON

The best ever I got a new outfit to wear this coming week.

Innis Hoggins

The Wright Museum just keeps getting better and better! The new two-part exhibit about slavery at Monticello is excellent. One part talks about slavery during colonial and early national times, and the striking contrasts between Jefferson's language on "freedom" and his practices of enslaving people, even after his death. His relationship with Sally Hemmings, in particular, is clarified. The other part talks about descendants of slaves held at Monticello; it features those who are alive today, and their relationship to both Monticello and to each other.

marsha Thompson

It was a fantastic African World Festival woth diggerent cultures aftican dancing very enjoyable it began to pour rain from the sky people began going home it was 9pm i was there at 5:40

Jeanetta Black

I really enjoy my work there

Shay

I take my babies here a few times a year. You couldn't possibly learn everything in this museum in one day. The atmosphere is wonderful and the staff are very helpful. They offer free admission some days and have different events within the museum. This is a great place to take children for a grand learning experience!

Dwayne Smith

The Events and it's a great place to take the family and enjoy.

La Dolce Vita

Very informative interesting and educational. Love the exhibits and displays. Beautiful art of African-American sculptures and history.

Jazzin4U

The museum provided a wealth of knowledge to be absorbed by all. Great!!!

Kenneth Rivera

We visited on a cold, quiet mid-week winter day. We spent a little over two hours in the museum, and could have spent more time. The museum is beautiful, architecturally, with an impressive entrance rotunda. The exhibit "And Still We Rise" provides an historical overview of African American history and is very well done. We learned a lot about the history of the slave trade, and the depictions of a slave ship made a huge impression. The only disappointment was that most of the interactive components of the exhibit seemed to be either turned off or not functioning. We also visited the Aretha exhibit, which was small but enjoyable, and the hair and fashion exhibits which honestly were fun but didn't contribute much to our understanding of African American culture or history in those areas.Everyone working at the museum was very friendly and enthusiastic-- staff and volunteers both. In fact, our interactions with volunteers really made our trip special-- they were knowledgeable, personable, and just lovely. After we left, we commented on how outstanding our interactions were with people at this museum compared to some other world class museums we have visited!

Emma M

I had such a cool experience and my tour guide was so nice you should all go to this museum

Danny Romeo

This is a Museum that everyone needs to visit. I learned a lot about African American history and culture. It has many very thought provoking exhibits. The staff is very nice and helpful.

A.V. Knowles Jr.

Informative information but it's so much more!

Creshia McCulloh

Awesome museum! Loved the exhibits and the guides! Will be returning and recommend highly!

J Mills

I went to a talk and reception for an exhibit on President Obama given by photojournalist Andre Smith. The photos are breathtaking and inspirational. Smith explained his process for determining the best angle, space, subjects and subject matter to shoot. His attention to detail is both superb and amazing. The exhibit runs through June 30, 2019 and is worth seeing.

Sally Byrd

The Wright Museum just keeps getting better and better! The new two-part exhibit about slavery at Monticello is excellent. One part talks about slavery during colonial and early national times, and the striking contrasts between Jefferson's language on "freedom" and his practices of enslaving people, even after his death. His relationship with Sally Hemmings, in particular, is clarified. The other part talks about descendants of slaves held at Monticello; it features those who are alive today, and their relationship to both Monticello and to each other.

Lateefah Dixon

Loved the docents. They were sooooo nice, funny and kind. I loved the creations that showed us how the African Americans were treated poorly and it showed me how much I should be thankful for

Anna Williams

Monumental History and Knowledge To Be Shared! Awesome.

Karen Coleman

Beautiful went to the African American Festival had a great time. My aunt wanted to go with me, I was surprised. Enjoyed the atmosphere & ppl.

GYNELL Campell

This was, by far, the best African American museum that I have been to, so far. It wonderfully captured the journey from Africa, and the making of a slave, to present day, and our celebrating our first black President. The exhibits were breathtaking! I had to pause for a long moment when i stepped into the exhibit displaying what it was like for my ancestors in the belly of the ship. I will be back. I loved it.

Dee Jeffries

Great museum. More people should visit. I had a wonderful time checking out the exhibits!

Robert Reese

This museum is awesome! Very informative and an emotional moment..

Joyce Battle

Wonderful place to visit also very Informative

Madeleine Turner

Breathtaking, heartbreaking, and very educational. Please being some tissues when you go, as you will see and experience the horrors that our African brothers and sisters faced at the hands of cruel money hungry people. I have been to my fair share of museums including the Holocaust museum in Washington DC, and I would consider parts of this museum just as powerful and heartbreaking. The staff is friendly and willing to answer any questions you may have.

Tiffany Moreno

We went on a field trip and it wasn't very entertaining. I felt like we could've done without the staff help. My son said his favorite part was the bus ride home.

Zené Gibson

Although there for a Warrior King's Memorial Service, the MAAH, holds a wealth of African History.

natural goddess88

Erica was soooo helpful! We just had our class reunion here on Saturday and we had a blast

Devonta White

Haven’t been back to the The Wright Museum since I was a kid. The When We Rise was an amazing experience. It really dives into the history of Detroit and the world through the African-American experience. You need about 2 or 3 hours to really take in the exhibit and explore the history of Detroit.

Doug Johnson

Every time I visit this beautiful place. It makes me feel proud to be part of America

Oacia Fair

I learned so much more about my history and how much we put into this world. I am so happy this museum exists. I guarantee that you will learn more here than you did in grade school (unless your school taught you more than just MLK and Rosa Parks). There is a lot of levels so bring your walking shoes. This is beautiful and the world needs to see this.

Akerria Wilkerson

I love this museum. It is full of history that everyone needs to know, especially African Americans.

Marquee Cusic

Amanda Gleason

What a wonderful museum, a true gem for the city of Detroit. Our school took a class trip and the impact of this museum is lasting. The guides have such a depth of knowledge and make this such a unique experience.

Maserati Lisa

Went here for my first time this last week when a friend of mine came into town to visit. The staff was so very nice, knowledgeable, and friendly. My only complaint was there's not much parking if you use "Park Detroit"

Jeffery Walker

As always I've always been impressed with the exhibits the personnel my experience has always been a positive one continue to move forward you have my support it's all good

Dona Coleman

The most beautiful place to visit. Full of history.

Iamericka89 Ericka

I was totally excited when my clients chose this museum as their wedding venue! The staff there is very professional, really easy to work. They made my clients wedding feel like a priority. The historic artifacts served as a unique backdrop which set the tone for the day! This is definitely one of Detroit’s precious jewels!

Lynette Greene

Every young person should attend this museum and get a guided tour. The school should then hold discussions to explore the past and analyze to change the future for this country. This is a great start. Next, they should attend a Jewish Museum like the one on Richmond Road inn Cleveland,Ohio. Then hold another discussion and continue until they conclude that America is a Melting Pot and it doesn't be long to one group.

Regina Brooks

Loved this place!! It was so interesting and rich with history. The depiction of slavery made me feel like I was truly there and grateful that I didn't have to live during that time. The cost was very inexpensive for the amount of information that you learn. I will definitely visit again!! Highly recommend to all!!

V. Dorrough

The Artifacts the statues the paintings ALL AWESOME. The curators/ staff Was very informative and knowledgeable this was enjoyable experience

Michael Anderson

Impressive and educational museum. Beautiful exhibits with full scale recreations of traditional African markets, slave ships, and historical black-owned businesses in Detroit. I actually preferred this museum to the National Museum of African American History in DC. They don't allow photography, however, which I think is a shame. The building was almost empty when I was there on a Saturday afternoon. Social media posts could help bring awareness and create interest in attending

Sharonda King-Djima

Beautiful place to visit! Had the honor of attending an event, it was awesome.

Ani H

Great museum of the African experience. Moving representation of the slave trade. Excellent historical background

Jacquelyn Jordan

Words can not express my feelings. You have to see it for yourself. Awesome. So much history. My first time in Detroit. I am so glad I got a chance to see it.

Corrina Hall

Came here for a fashion show to support Kouture for Kolbi, and even though they kept getting rained out, they sure got it together and delivered an excellent fashion show!

Janet Miller

The museum was an eye opening experience. It illuminated our nations dark history of the enslavement of West African to showing the light our nation can be once those slaves were set free from the peculiar institution, and given an opportunity to live as freemen and women.

Valerie Link

Wonderful place to enjoy your African American culture

T Dale

An interactive museum plainly showing the history of Africans prior to slavery and post slavery. I love the history about African Americans in Detroit. I learned a lot. I was impressed by the architecture in lobby!

Susan Storey

If you've never been, you need to. Beautiful museum ! Excellent exhibits. Saw an original play, SALT CITY - 313, created by Detroit's own jessica Care moore, a former graduate of Cody High School. Fabulously creative, innovative show in an absolutely gorgeous, intimate theatre. Will be visiting more often. Always an interesting destination - a "must" for anyone who appreciates culture.

Chris Dowdell

Gem B.

JE McCall

One of mu favorite places to visit in "The D!"

Craig Blogger

I really enjoyed my most recent visit. The staff was really friendly and greeted us with a smile. The main exhibit was very informative and delivered a hair raising experience. It's crazy to learn how and why actual people were enslaved and abused. With this exhibit it's easy to see how the ghosts of the American slavery era is still influencing today's policy. In reality this country roll has not changed much. My only suggestion is better lighting to make reading the walls easier.

Amari Hogans

I like this museum. It's a good place to go to when people want to know about history. And what people went through just for us to have this freedom that we have right no.

Jerry Hadley

A Great Museum telling the story of African American History starting in Africa coming forward. I was do educated and impressed, the Museum actually has the replica of a slave ship. A Great place to visit, give yourself plenty of time.

ladykamin 007

I was in town and wanted to do something different. The exhibition was very thought provoking." We shall rise", was about how our people were enslaved and brought to America. Then it chronicled our lives to freedom.

Michelle Taylor

Great location for an afternoon, lots to see and rotating exhibits! In a wonderful area of Detroit.

Mark Tremel

Dope. The Wright Museum is a must see for everyone. We went specifically to see the Aretha Franklin exhibit, but also saw part of the special fashion exhibit also. Their permanent exhibits are extremely detailed and very interesting. Spoiler Alert, the main exhibit takes a long time to see if you want to do it justice. As a bonus, there was an artisan and craft sale on the day we were there!!

Brenda Kulak

It's not only beautiful, it's an fun and awesome place to learn. The workers there are very insightful and knowledgeable. It's a great place to spend the day.

Sandra A QUEEN

I had a ball. The tour guides were excellent. The exhibits had a lot of useful information. The environment is kid friendly.

Elizabeth Watts

I took my daughter for the African Festival and we had a great time.

Holly Morrisey

Great Museum! The items are more personal than most museums and very relatable. The staff is very professional and kind!

Quintin Stroud

It's just a great place to visit; spend a few hours learning and exploring.

sigler kareem

The museum was wonderful, however the valet is horrible! The scratched my new car, and took zero responsibility! Enjoy the museum, but park your own car!

tia hill

The Museum is a Must See! From cultural art to life like sculptures and exhibits. It is moving, if you haven't been or taken your kids you need to put it on your list of things to experience.

Raymond Womack

Lots of interesting artifacts and people committed to ensuring guests learn their history.

LaTanya Sherar

Great place! Historical

Gayle Bowman

Awesome experience. Travel through the journeys of world's first people from the beginning of time.

Jason Johnson

Visited the When We Rise exhibit and was very impressed. It was good, but there were too many of the interactive stations missing. Their were a lot of lost opportunities to educate. The architecture of the building is impressive, the rotunda demands your attention when you walk in. I would appreciate the support given to traditional museums at this location. A little TLC would enhance the experience and maximize the cultural experience. The staff seemed to appreciate their jobs and were welcoming.

Randall L.

The recreation of the slave ship was haunting. I was overcome with emotion and felt sick at the thought of humans being treated like livestock. If you can't make it the African-American Museum in DC, the Wright Museum in Detroit is a fantastic alternative.

Durell Leonard

Love it here. The one Museum that's for us. Teach us our history. One of my favorite places to be.

Michelle Parks

African World Festival was nice.

Katherine

The exhibits are educational. Please go and learn the history. Unforgettable.

ptcat3

Attended the 2019 Women's March there. The march was supposed to be outside, but the cold temperatures and falling snow moved it inside. The atrium with rotunda and skylights was the only part I saw. It was beautiful and was a great venue to hear speakers. There is room for a several hundred people.

DONALD RHODES

Just the be exhibits in general. Great history in this museum. I will definitely visit again if I'm in the area.

SunshineInThe313

A very important part in history for all to explore.

Kenton Jordan

A place where African American culture is on Full display and its glory and beauty.

kurogane Tsubasa

It's really beautiful. I went to see Nicole from New York Times talk about her book and the hardships of being what people called "African American" and how we made American because without us there would be no America. That we ARE the Americans. It was beautiful.

John Childress

I've been here multiple times, and I love the place. Learning about history, and getting to know things I haven't actually knew. 5 ⭐

Sam

Truly enjoyed this museum. So realistic. Quite a eye opener about America's slave history.

AnnaGirl Douglas

Awesome History displays, very educational

lit Kid9980

This is an awesome place that has a lot of local and American history. A must see if you get the opportunity.

Mary Ann Kost

Fellow teachers and I brought our students from Flint, Michigan to the museum today. What a phenomenal experience. Doug and Jonathan, our docents, were fantastic. They made sure we had a spectacular time. They were engaging, fun, informative, and so personable. Ms McKinney, the educator who led our craft class, was equally engaging and energetic. I have taken classes to the museum in the past, but none of the visits were as enjoyable as this one. Based on the conversation I heard on the way home on the bus, I got the feeling my students had an even better time than I thought.

Pierre-Denise Gilliam

Awesome experience. The slave boat exhibit is a must see. Painful.

Kristina Brown

Learned so much from our guided tour. It was funny, entertaining and educational. Would recommend if you're in the area!!!

Chris Marshall
