Excellent exhibits. Pretty disappointed in the Asian Art gallery since it seemed very "token"-y, but it was still beautiful. Greatly curated temporary exhibits, as would be expected they tend to be very progressive and pro-female. I really appreciate that. Staff is incredibly friendly and helpful. Beautiful environment.

I have taken my 2nd graders on a field trip to the Smith Art Museum & Botanical Gardens for 2 years in a row now. This field trip is hands down the best way to give my art students an authentic museum experience close to home. We connect the trip to nature making it seamless to the botanical gardens. The whole staff of Smith Art Museum is amazing. The student tour guides and head of education, Gina makes the field trip a breeze! They are all so accommodating and helpful. The buses are free with their bus subsidy program and free admission. We had a student who needed special access for bathrooms and feeding. They greeted my nurse and teachers in a private area and gave them space to meet her needs. I will never miss a year bringing my students here. Best field trip ever!

This campus museum is a gem. I had some time to myself while visiting a friend at Smith College - so I popped in to see what I knew was supposed to be a small, yet solid collection of Impressionist artwork. Upon arriving, I enjoyed not only the old... But the new! I was able to see a varied collection of ancient Egyptian and Greek pieces, Christian art through the ages, modern sculpture, African sculpture, AND a wonderfully curated print and photography exhibit focusing on atrocities of and life during World War I. My brief hour or so in the museum was enough to make me want to come back the next time I'm in town and explore more. I can't wait!

Secret set of rules, to be followed x10. 6 inches distance? No, stay 5 feet away. If you want people so far from art that they can’t, for instance, point to any aspect of it from a reasonable distance, what’s the point of even viewing it? And if that’s what you want, post signs around, or even better, plexiglass barriers over everything.

Rude staff. Should look into employing college students instead. Will awkwardly follow you around and make viewing art a very unpleasant experience. Amhest College's Mead Museum and UMass' Contemporary art museum are much much better.

I like the relatively small space (compared to the Met or MOMA). Gives you the chance to see the exhibit in 1-2 hours.. Easy parking, friendly staff.

Be sure to stop by here if you are visiting downtown Northampton. For $5 or less you can enjoy 3 floors of a nice collection which includes some works by Monet, Rodin and Sargent.

Major College Art museum in a modern building with good light and flowing spaces over multiple floors. Their permanent collection offers an overview of Western art from ancient times onward and is supplemented by an active program of special exhibitions. While not at the level of the museums at say Yale or Princeton, Smith nonetheless is worth a stop. They have a small gift shop, but no (longer a) cafe.

Smith college is founded on a very old legacy. Its roots are in upper class elite white women. It shows. Poor students of color are always despised and have a miserable time. The student and staff body is really really heavily racist and transmisogynist (even in comparison to the rest of the Northampton area). The harassment and exploitation queer and trans students of color face is absurd. The social dynamics are so strained often to the point of being violent and abusive. This place really needs to figure out how to allocate resources better. The art museum has lots of resources, but who's art do they show?it's open to the public and pretty accessible and they show some nice pieces, but for a school with such a large endowment the arts really don't get much. What little they get, they do everything they can with

It's a small but very nice museum. Great modern art and fine art exhibits including some works from Picasso. The current exhibit on plastic is some very thought provoking work. The downstairs installations are also quite nice.
