REVIEWS OF Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology IN Massachusetts

Nadine Barnett

The Peabody Museum is one of my favorite museums of all time! As an Archaeology student here at Harvard University, the Peabody has been an amazing resource for my studies and interests. The staff is incredibly friendly and helpful, and the exhibits are amazing and wondrous.

Hameed Chughtai

Almost excellent museum of ethnology. I'd have given five stars if they paid critical attention to the post colonial aspect of history. The information often appears bias to the modern US rather than indigenous past, which it tries to document.

Heather Swain

So much amazing info!

(Translated by Google) Excellent museum Original pieces of pre-Columbian culture. Very well presented and with display of very clear dioramas. A trip of three floors to dedicate more than two hours. There is also an exhibition of minerals and entomology. Highly recommended (Original) Excelente museo. Piezas originales de cultura precolombina. This museum was one of my favorite places during our Boston vacation. The museum has many great things to see. We got there an hour before closing but we managed to see everything and enjoy them. If you're close by give it a try. Highly recommended.

I had a great time! I loved the newer exhibits, the Harvard Indian School exhibit was my favorite, I loved everything about its design, particularly the layered drawers showing the levels of excavation. I also appreciated the explicit mention of NAGPRA and modern Native Americans as living people.

We were not really impressed with this museum. We have been to many, many museums. Some of the artifacts are interesting, but there is nothing engaging. For example, in the Native American section the addition of Native museum playing would have really added to the displays. My boyfriend made the same comment. Many other museums (even small musuems) will have tv screens showing examples of traditional dance and song or music playing though speakers. The collections seemed disjointed and outdated. The museum seems to be in need of a refresh. It took us under an hour to see everything. There are four small floors of exhibits. There are lots of stairs but there is also an older elevator that is small. It should be noted the lady at the ticket desk was kind and helpful!

Kirk Weaver

Fantastic displays.. loads to learn about.

Sunita Bhattacharya

This is a very very interesting place that lets you go back in time and visit creativity of people ages ago especially the Andes. They have an amazing collection of about 1.5 million archaeological objects!

María Gómez Güémez

I like this museum to much.

Bodie Weedop

You could spend a week there without boredom

Stephen Saenim

Amazing! They pack so much into a small museum. Loved every square inch of it. :) TIP: If you have a similar museum membership in another major city, they might offer free reciprocal admission. Double check the website and bring proof of membership.

Stefanie Urban

Lots of interesting exhibits. Very much an old school "display cases full of things" museum format.

Founded in 1866 by George Peabody, making it one of the oldest museums devoted to anthropology, with one of the most comprehensive collections in the world. Pro-Tip: Free on Sunday Mornings!

A great museum with a classic presentation mixed with modern technology. Thorough collection of minerals including meteorites, fossils, taxidermy collection of existing and extinct animals. Don't miss the 3 full whale skeletons and glass plant models.

Very fun for anthro nerds like myself. Recently opened up a big new exhibit. They also have lots of cool artifacts and educational dioramas. A favorite of mine is actually the exhibit on the ongoing Harvard Yard dig. The Art of War exhibit is also cool. Harvard students get in free and can bring a guest. Boston Public Library often has discount passes for up to six people. Admission also gets you into the natural history museum next door, which is worth a visit.

Sneha Chandrika

Expected a huge collection, but so far whatever is located is quite unique but dims in front of the Museum of Fine arts collection. This is definitely a recommended museum for all the collection and educative information the exhibits carry.

Ed Holden

Great little cultural museum connected with the Harvard Museum of Natural History (entrance to one is good for the other). Free to Massachusetts residents with ID Sundays before noon.

Prateek Joshi

Fascinating museum attached to the Harvard Natural History Museum. Your entrance fee gives you access to both. Perhaps the most interesting exhibits relate to the Mayas. Harvard has been central to Mayan research for over a century. The Maya writing (glyphs)were first effectively decoded by Tatiana Proskouriakoff, working in the basements of the museum. Ian Graham, whilst working for Harvard, transcribed the details of life at the major Maya settlements. If you go upstairs, you will find teaching models for various aboriginal American societies. I believe these are still used for teaching archaeology and anthropology. Last time I visited, there was also an interesting exhibition about a student project to excavate Harvard Yard. This allowed the students to manage and carry out the major tasks involved in a complete archaeological dig. Highly recommended.

The Peabody Museum is on Harvard's Campus and connected to the Harvard Museum of Natural History. Unfortunately, the Peabody's exhibits have become tired. A lot of the items have been removed or loaned, which definitely takes away from the collection. Not the best museum for kids, especially with the HMNH right around the corner. Its such a shame because it is still an impressive collection. I can't think of a more extensive collection of Native and Latin American history in the Boston area. Hopefully, Harvard will invest some money and time into renovations.

This place was great. My only feedback is that if someone turns up 30 minutes before closing time, have a half every rate fee or something. Full fee when you simply don't have the time to explore it all isn't cool.

3 floors of history about exploring our species’ history. Pretty meta. In all seriousness, a great and vibrant collections. Lots of native peoples exhibits, interesting stories of past major exhibitions, and well curated rooms to explore. Definitely could spend a long time here to look more closely

Really beautiful exhibits. I've seen a few natural science museums, but this was very impressive.

This place, including the adjacent natural history museum, is one of the best museums in the country. The 5 hours we spent were not nearly enough! There is so much to learn and see, and the collection is presented so beautifully that you actually want to spend time reading it all. I kept wishing that I lived in Boston, just so I could go there every week and take the time to really absorb everything and appreciate what Harvard has done here. Expect random school children groups to come through (who don't understand what they have and we don't

Loved this museum. So interesting. So many animals on display. Enjoyed it all.

I would suggest doing this separately from the Natural History Museum. We spent a long time their and then realized we needed to eat lunch and went through the Peabody quite quickly since we were only in Cambridge for the day. There's so much to see all around that this museum needs its own time. Loved what we saw thought. We have Native American relatives and close friends, we are from the Southwest so it was a beautul collection. Worth seeing!

Gigi Harmon

This is a small museum which we accessed via a different museum included in our City pass, thus saving money, and checked several of their floors. I really liked their section of Latin America and Native America with exhibits which are not presented in Europe in the same detail they are presented here. On the negative side, the items could have been presented better, however I assume this is due to lack of funds and space so I cannot but appreciate the effort. But in London such a museum would have been probably free to visit..............

Vladimir Barash

This is a little gem tucked into Harvard campus. The exhibitions are honestly awesome, featuring artifacts from the ancient American civilizations. Definitely worth a visit.

After having been to the Peabody museum in New Haven, I was pleased to see so many different displays to make the combined experience so much more complete. The internet is helpful, but to see the displays with actual artifacts is helpful to make a connection to the cultures.

The The Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology is a small, but unique museum curated by Harvard University. It's exhibits and the knowledge they contain, while limited in number, are unique and very accessible. It's an intimate experience that is worth a detour from the better known tourist stops. It is well-suited for families with children. Because it is physically connected to the adjacent Harvard Museum of Natural History, you can wander freely between the two. There are the usual discounts, but on Sundays if you enter before noon, admission is free to Massachusetts residents.

Cameron Burke

I went to an archaeology fair there and they had examples of what they found and they clearly explained how it was found and what it was used for. They said that they can tell the age of the item based on how far underground it was. It was amazing.

C Senkal

This is was my first visit to the museum, and it’s not a regular museum, although very interesting. The Totems are amazingly majestic, but I was a bit disappointed because I expected to know where the pieces were from and more about their history. Instead, it feels like a discombobulated environment where the pieces are show without the history behind them and how they all connected.

We spent 3 hours here on a chilly winter afternoon when we had only intended to be there 2! The art and weapons exhibit, which is why we went, was incredible (I stopped and read every detail), and while I thought I'd want to breeze through the rest, I couldn't help but linger in every room. I don't care one bit about geology, and yet I just had to get a look at literally every mineral in that exhibit! I 100% recommend making this a stop for any trip to Boston.

Seems like it was arranged by someone with ADD, not to be disrespectful, they have several amazing pieces, but they are organized in a very antiquated manner, almost seems like a spaced out cabinet of curiosities

Would be great if dates were shown on descriptions of specimens.

You have to come back multiple times to absorb everything. Love that it’s quiet and provides a nice escape to learn and explore the past. Also, the summer Solstice festivities are awesome somewhere between June 20-22 each calendar year. Keep an eye out on their calendar. Museum is open till 9pm during the solstice festivities!

(Translated by Google) It is a museum located on the premises of Harvard University. As I entered around 16 o'clock, it was about an hour later, but I think that it will be exactly one hour to one and a half hours even if I look around slowly. As expected, there are indigenous people 's history and diverse ethnic exhibits that can not be thought of as the United States, and I took many pictures. Because it is connected with the Harvard University Museum of Natural History next door, if you visit here with us, it is a mechanism to understand the history of the USA and the natural history more. Washing and WiFi are also provided. A diamond in the rough of Boston museums. Extensive collection of ethnographic arts. Some are the last of their kind from a forgotten culture.

Alison Fisher

featuring a lot of loot by Harvard alumni. And there is so much museum theory now, even more so re anthropology and ethnography, that you just can't win, especially at Harvard. And from that perspective, the Peabody works extremely well, including retaining (consciously) some of the old museum interior. It is surely not a must for Harvard, but an interesting place nonetheless. The Dia de los Muertos events are fantastic for kids and strongly recommended!

Pritam Sonavne

Museum which is all about history of America, animals and birds information.

A museum and a University that sponsored thiefs and burglars, and also promotes illegal trafficking of ancient artifacts. Their whole Mayan collection is made from objects stolen by an American criminal, sponsored by the museum, that for years ransacked and illegally trafficked with all the objects he could find from the Mayan Peninsula. The worst part is that the largest part of that collection is rotting in the Museum's warehouse. Return the objects to where they belong you criminals!

Eric Sapp

This is a nice little museum that also connects to the Harvard Natural History museum.
