Old Sturbridge is a wonderful experience filled with history and entertainment. The beauty of the historical structures and the sense of realism by the employees brought you back to this time period. The employees were very knowledgeable and were very open to questions to give you a better understanding of colonial life. The many interactive exhibits give you a glance of the difficulty in order to be successful during these trying times. We went as a school field trip and recommend other districts to do the same.
Haven't been back here since fifth grade!! The wife and I now being middle age had a great time. We loved walking around and learning about our New English history in a "living" town enviroment. All the employees were exceptionally friendly and knowledgeable on the character they portrayed
The village is a wonderful educational place but don't visit there without trying their famous molasses cookies!
A piece of early American history elegantly presented in a.quaint setting. Great for kids and adults.
Wonderful way to experience the early 1800's. Plan on spending a day.
Very nice to walk around on a nice fall day.
Local , interesting, and puts you in the New England of the past . Literally feels like you time traveled without even really going far from home. I want to come back soon!
Love anything preserving history! Nice gift shop.. Restaurant summer fare
Finally a fantastic weekend for Redcoats to Rebels... A few sprinkles, but great weather overall. Wonderful visitors....
good to learn people life 200 years ago
Well Run! Well Staffed! Very fascinating to be brought back in Time to the 1800's and put yourself in the shoes of the people who lived then. Highly recommended for all ages.
Went with a school group. It was an amazing learning experience for my students. Our guide was so knowledgeable and attentive to the level of my students. Well worth the expense. Students loved it.
Plan for the whole day. Very interesting. Worth more than one visit.
Been many times. Great place for field trips, or to learn about history and how life used to be in colonial New England. Staff is knowledgeable and have many interesting things to see. You never know what you're going to see, whether a blacksmith making nails, a potter making vases, women butchering turkeys, or someone skinning a coyote (yes we actually saw that). Their Christmas time events are especially nice.
Very fun. The historical reenactors are very informative and friendly. Because of being in the right place at the right time (and being an Animal Science major in college), I was allowed to help handfeed a calf. Fantastic experience, can't wait to go back.
Place is great, it's amazing to see how things where done back in the 1800's, put this place on your bucket list for sure.
Super fun historical village. Makes a great family activity. We went for their Christmas program and had a really fun time. Totally worth checking out if you are in the area.
So many great things to see, and beautifully situated among nature. We had such a pleasure time walking around, talking to the very nice staff about history, and even had delicious ice cream.
Most athentic 1800 village I've ever been to. Very spacious and happy staff. Been wanting to go for years!!!
Sturbridge Village is always a nice place to stop and see. It's on beautiful property, it feels like you went back in time. The farm animals are always a must see. I think it's fascinating to still be able to hold onto that much history and for people to still be interested in that. I've been there twice, first time in grade school. Mind you it's been over 20 years since I've been there and it feels like nothing has really changed. They haven't added anything new. It was hard to find a "actor/actress" a lot of the houses were empty. I felt like it was lacking some history telling. And I really don't feel like it's worth $28 to see again.
Excellent resource. This is a very well put together site with lots of artisans and villagers doing a great job explaining all they do.
Very interesting and informative. Except to spend about 3 hours here more or less
This attraction is absolutely amazing. 2 people in our group were active duty military so we got in for free, which was very generous of them. We spent around 5 hours at the village and I doubt we really experienced even ¼ of what they have to see and do. The total throwback to the past and their dedication to preserving it for future generations is incredible. You can be sure I and my family will be back to see the rest in the future!
I visited my brother in CT in June and we went to Old Sturbridge Village. We grew up going on school trips to Old Sturbridge Village and with family. Love going back in time to colonial New England. A must do when visiting New England!
Plan to spend the day. Interesting and informative. You'll want your camera
You truly feel like you are walking around in the 1800's. The people that work there are friendly and professional. They know their history and willing to walk you through their part of the village at your own pace. There are many places to go to the bathroom and rest. They have a boat ride and a horse ride all inclusive at different times of the day.
If you are a school or a social studies/history teacher i recommend coming to this recreation as a field trip.
Brings you back in time. Friendly staff and educators.
I was here during a heatwave and they were all still dressed to the 1930s. Very informative.
We came on a school field trip, but have been members for years! The schoolteacher (older woman) was excellent teaching the 3rd graders we had, as well as the Blacksmiths! I was surprised that the older man driving the wagon was short tempered with the kids, but maybe 3rd graders aren't his fortè! He gave out great information, and was knowledgeable!
George guided us to the past romantically.
The people who work there were very stuffy and rude to us as well as a group of students with developmental disabilities. They didn’t want to talk to them nor answer any of their questions ☹️
Slightly high admission fee, it seems we payed for the investment in keeping our history rather than the tour itself. The "characters" were very knowledgeable and entertaining
I have been here several times over many years, but this was the first time I took my kids and I can finally appreciate how amazing a step back into history is. The look of amazement when they were actually able to not just be told but to see something in it's application is well worth the price if admission. We also ate at the tavern it was very reasonably priced and good food with a great staff. We had a wonderful time and spent the entire day there. Thank you too everyone there for all that they do.
A great place to visit and learn about the past. The cookies at the Miner general store are homemade and delicious. Just don't go on free Friday. It is a mob scene.
This place has such amazing events to enjoy!
Lovely park like, peaceful, educational.
This is by far the best museum! The people there dress and act appropriately for 1830 and explain everything very well. All my questions were answered in depth. It's so large it is hard to see in 1 day.
This is a must see. Allow at least 3- 4 hrs. Don't miss this
Went on a nice fall day. Bought a season pass as I plan to come back on occasion as I live nearby. Always something going on here when you go. Shows us how life was in 1830's. Highly recommended!!!
What a wonderful living museum. We enjoyed it so much more then Plymouth Plantation. The employees in historical dress were very nice and informative. The setting itself is gorgeous, lush green rolling hills and we had beautiful blue skies. My kids especially enjoyed the olden time children's games that were set up throughout the museum.
it was supposed to be 5 stars! I'll fix it now! :-)
LOVED IT First time back since I was a kid, definitely going back many times. A great no/low technology getaway!
As a child, I visited about every other year. 40 plus years later, it is even more spectacular than I remembered. We picked a perfect day to go (quiet) and enjoyed the many very talented and patient docents, the glimpse into rural life, a sense of the charms and challenges of New England in the 1700s. Highly recommended!
This living museum is a must-see for anyone interested in pre-Civil War Americana. The buildings, costumed workers displaying typical skills/jobs of the time, and the pretty rural setting make for an interesting day for all ages. The cafeteria was great, too, with inexpensive but delicious food.
I first got a membership while pregnant. It was a great area to slowly walk aroung, and stroller friendly. We have had a membership for over 3 years now and go atleast once a month. There is always something to learn and the staff is so knowledgeable. Highly recomended for anyone out of state or not from New England. Love love love
It's been over 30 years since I've been there. As an adult I have a new appreciation for this place. This was a great experience.
Had a nice tour of facility, demo on how they make their Apple pie, great prime rib, nice history of building and grounds.
Nice place to be with kids. Informative museum
It was fun too see life as it was..so peaceful..but it was hard work too...wish we could go back in time..
Great family fun relaxed atmosphere
Great look at history in New England!! Took a class on colonial cooking and dining. Very nice!
The best food around. Clean, very friendly and accommodating workers.
My younger siblings and I recently visited from Texas, and we thoroughly enjoyed it! Everyone was so knowledgeable, and everything on the property was maintained very well.
OSV has much to offer all ages, I have enjoyed their day time family hour, Fall activities seeing cider being made and enjoying the warmth of their a campfire or Garth lit up for some old fashion cooking! I have enjoyed singing and Bell choirs at Christmas and horse drawn wagons with hands on memories we will talk about and to last my family a lifetime!
Friendly staff and great fun for the whole family.
The event I attended with other family members was " Old Sturbridge Village Wedding Tasting" for my son and future daughter-in-law's upcoming wedding. I found the servers that brought around trays of hors d' oeuvres very accommodating to those in attendance. I have attached a few photos of entrees offered.
One of the best living museums in New England. If you are a fan of late 1700's / early 1800's, then this is the place for you. This villages includes houses and workshops for all sorts of different townsfolk, ranging from farmers to blacksmiths to merchants to teachers. You get to learn their way of life during that time period and experience what their day to day chores would be like in person. There are fun activities all year round, so be sure to check their calendar for events.
Easily the most interesting and informative living history center I've ever visited. I had no idea how large it was before I arrived. My husband and I stayed at the historic Inn next door and it was lovely. I love that you are able to buy items crafted at the village as souvenirs. I can easily see myself visiting again during the fall of the year.
God I swear this place was made for me and my kids. We love being taken back to what made our amenities today. They love homeschool days here. Cant to be back soon.
Loved it! There were people in almost every area to tell you about different aspects of living in the 1700's. Very informative and enjoyable.
A flashback in time that makes you appreciate today's modern comforts. The blacksmith, kilm and the Mills were highlights of my visit.
This is an amazing place to bring kids to showcase history in a different and engaging way. We love it here!
The actors transport you back in time and give an authentic feel for the era, the staff was very knowledgeable and included you in the experience. This is perfect for families.
Loved it. Be sure to take the free horse drawn ride through the property. The driver gives a lot of info that makes the village more meaningful.
Great time , fun for families to roam around. Great learning about history.
Even though it doesn't have as many interpreters in costume as they used to (when I was growing up they had 1-2 people in each building) O.S.V. still holds amazing charm and the opportunity to observe and participate in many 19th century activities. The gift shop is outsourced and ridiculously overpriced. Overall though, it's beautiful. They have a Sleepy Hollow production in October which is great. My favorite is December though. Sleigh rides, hot mulled cider, bonfires in the snow...
You need more than one, two or three visits to truely cover the museum and take it all in. This is great for all ages and they have truely put so much thought and planning into the museum. All the staff is wonderful, and accommodating. (Even when I run into them outside of work they are extremely nice!)
Great place to visit. Great historical place.
Worth a membership to see the changes through the seasons. I have young children and trips are relaxed, like going to the park. The historians working are very easy to talk to. Be sure to take the opportunity to do some work on the farms and do any of the available crafts.
Very nice have been going for 50 years
Amazing experience. A small village with historic atmosphere to show us how our ancestors in the late 1700's and early 1800's lived in New England and similar places outside. Homes with a different layout than we have today. Mechanical and wooden technology how to make basic items that we use on a daily basis. Firearms and cannons for war. Local villagers wear old school outfits. Very interesting if you like history.
So many interactive activities! Our kids all loved it so much (ages 4 through 10). I reccomend the blacksmith and the wool dying.
Very interesting place if you like history, they give demonstrations and are dressed in time period clothes. My only regret is I didn't allow myself more time there.
This was an interesting place to visit! We went on a school trip and I was with Kindergarteners so they didn't appreciate it as much. I wish there were more people dressed up and around the place though. There were barely any and many buildings were empty. They loved the walk in the woods though!
Such an incredible place to take the whole family! Pack lunch or eat there because you won't want to leave early! Prices are quite reasonable as well!
I highly recommend this place if you want to take a trip back in time and learn a few things and enjoy history with the family. Kid friendly and the horse trolly/with narration was perfect . I learned a lot while I was there and will be back for more!
The experience you have totally depends on the time you go, early is the best.
We get a membership here. It’s well worth it. My kids have grown up going there and every year it’s a different experience for them because they see it differently and have new interests.
This place is great for a family outing. So much you learn
It was very creepy I went during the day and I was still scared I can’t imagine how it is at night. I’m pretty sure to place is haunted. I suggest not going.
I have adored OSV since I was a child. Especially enjoy the Freeman Farm exhibit, as I am an agricultirist at heart.
If you are visiting Massachusetts, you definitely have to spend a day at the Old Sturbridge Village. It's conveniently located near the Mass Pike / Rte 90 near I84. My parents brought me and my brothers here in the 1980s. We brought our kids here in the 90s and almost 20 years later, we saw it again. It hasn't changed much. I've uploaded a bunch of pictures from our most recent trip. There's lots to see and do. There are people/actors in various locations who will explain what they are doing and why. The gardens are lovely, it's a working farm.
This is a replica of a town from yesteryear - like 1700-1800's. They demonstrate how life was in early colonial America. The town has a working farm, and many other things - like a tin smith, a lawyer's office, a village smithy, a cabinet maker, a mercantile store, meeting house, a church, a bank etc. There are costumed people who demonstrate things, explain and answer questions. It is wonderful for history buffs and people who are curious about hand made items. People in period dress - telling stories as if they were there. Great for the whole family. Entertaining and educational. Free pass for your family with military ID shown !!!! Wonderful place to visit!
The educators/actors were extremely knowledgeable. The setup is relaxed. It really is a place that all ages can enjoy.
Always have fun going there.
Scenic, fun and educational. Great for all ages!
Staff very pleasant and knowledgeable.
Very educational place for children. I love it! Been here 3 times.
Interesting and enjoyed the walk through history.
Idyllic setting, you won't want to leave.
This is quite an experience, especially for children in school age. It will be best to go when the weather is nice so you can walk around and enjoy the difference living settings they have. It is like walking into a time machine and seeing for real how people used to live in the area centuries ago. I love how well their employees play their roles and how they explain everything as they are making it. They have a real life setting of an old village... it's really worth visiting!
It was a great experience for my grandchildren!! The cookies were not as good as they were years ago!
Old Sturbridge Village was an excellent field trip from Connecticut. Fourth and Fifth graders had so much to see...we extended the day this year so we could get to more exhibits. We went in both fall and spring this year. Beautiful time of year...got to see the new calf and lambs. The docents are truly wonderful. And the gift shop is great! Highly recommend the trip from all over New England.
Great place to spend a day. Bldgs are actually structures relocated from towns and cities in New England
I have been coming to Sturbridge Village since I was about 6, and I'm 20 now. Despite years of visits, it has never ever lost it's charm. I love to come in the spring and early summer to see the baby animals, for all of their events, and to stock up on Ye Olde Fashioned Lemon Drops every once in a while. The interactivity of the museum is wonderful, especially when they have copies of their recipes to give you. Thank you all for your wonderful museum :)
We went on the 4th of July to eat at the tavern expecting it to be the same type of menu as at Sunday brunch. However it was rather limited in selections. The food was good enough. The Merlot was fine. We had to wait quite a while to be seated , that was to be expected on a holiday. Overall we enjoy osv and we are annual members.
History is great and all, but not sure what the $28 was for! I have not been to the place in over 39 years and not much has changed. There was not enough "actors" throughout the place. In addition, the cafeteria was basically out if food at 2:30! They need to change the price structure or the way the facility is set up!
Gets better every time. We lucked into a weekend day with an encampment. Knowledgeable people.
This is really an amazing slice of 1800s Americana. Staff are incredible and knowledgeable while staying in character and truly working. Adults and kids alike can enjoy this magical place.
If you pick a day that the saw mills are working it's great. Quaint town, and lots to see. Take time to go through each building and walk on the river trail.
It had been at least 35 years since I visited Old Sturbridge Village, and it was just as enjoyable as it was when I was a kid. There are many buildings to explore, and the living history is well done. I highly recommend Old Sturbridge Village to people of all ages.
Haven't been here since I was a child 50 years ago. I'm a member and finally got to visit. Very interesting and informative about our past. I found the map a bit confusing. Sinage could be a bit better. Unfortunately, so many of the structures are in need of exterior painting. I'm sure they are doing the best they can on that front. The restaurant had a nice selection of food. You can also bring your own lunch and eat at indoor or outdoor areas. Enjoyed my visit.
We enjoyed our visit here. Unfortunately not every home had someone in it to explain the significance. But the ones that were , were great. Took us about 3 hours to see everything.
Excellent place to learn and experience history first hand. Must see.
A historical gold mine! Came here during the week and on a nice sunny day and it was awesome! They do an incredible job helping you to understand what a working village might look like in the 1830's. You name it, blacksmiths, pottery, carding, water power, tin work, farm animals, farming, cooking, and baking to name a few, they have people actually doing these things and who are happy to answer any questions you might have on the topic. Been here a number of times and I'm always learning something new.
I went yesterday for the first time in 20 years. I was very impressed by the educators / townspeople who crafted and told stories of the 1830. We have so lucky to have this in New England.
This place was pretty cool! It was bigger than what I was expecting. Very fun and interesting way to learn about history. We were here from 10:30am-4:00pm. We tried the breakfast buffet and that was good. The service was good and friendly. Definitely want to go back again at some point.
Really good recreation of an 18th century New England village. Actors inside are knowledgeable too. Really enjoyed it.
Loved it! It's amazing experience. Went with my mom (65) and she loved it.
Take a step back into colonial days. A great place for older elementary children to visit and see what life was like in colonial days. Old Sturbridge is basically a village of original houses that were moved from their original location. Many of the horses have the "inhabitants" inside of them and they are full of information. Don't forget to stop at the blacksmith and watch him craft things with his forge! It is a lot of walking so not only would be tough on younger children but most of what the village is teaching would be lost. Recommended age 8+
Great place for historical edutainment. Staff is great and it's well maintained.
Loved this place, we spent two days here.
The historical buildings are wonderful. The costumed enactors were incredibly knowledgeable and clearly love what they do. The horse and buggy driver was great and more than patient with part of our tour group than I could have been! Definitely worth the stop. Military members get in free! We did, but then contributed a flag to the field of flags. It was awesome.
great historical place went back after many years loved it !
I love going here and have been several times. One of things that I like is that the things to do at the village change over the course of the year due to what is produced on the farmland. My recent visit in March had a few displays or activities related to maple sugaring.
Although, due to the early season, most of the buildings were unattended, there were still many interesting structures and some beautiful views. It was pleasant just to walk around and take photos. And, thank you to the very kind blacksmith who let me pull the bellows.
Best ice cream I have had in a very long time. We bought four quarts to go as we are traveling in our motorhome. PS: We know ice cre as we too owned and ice cream shop. Three thumbs up. Yummy!
The family loves coming here. So much history to learn. It's beautifully decorated at X-Mass. The staff are 100% professional and always have answers to your questions. Wonderful flowers in the Spring. It's worth a visit if you live in New England.
Absolutely mindblowing.... loved it in 92'... even better now!!
Learn to get the best of both old Sturbridge era and today's modern era people!.... Learn how to craft and repair your own stuff so you're not a slave to corporations doing it for you like most modern people are...... But also be modern and abandon women for sex-bots so you're not a slave to women like Old Sturbridge era people are! :)
Great as always. I appreciate the staff with their knowledge, and willingness to talk or chit-chat. I also appreciate Sturbridge Village giving military members a discount on entrance fees. Thank you.
Very interesting place with exhibits about 1830s life in New England.
Very interesting to hear and see how people lived in 1830. Lots to see and read about. A little disappointed that there were not as many people demonstrating how things were done, from what I saw and remembered when visiting as a child. Bring comfortable shoes and be prepared to do a lot of walking.
The best ever so much to do and see. You need all day.
It was a lot of hype. The village looked interesting from afar . The price was expensive. I was disappointed.
Something for everyone. Our entire group enjoyed the day
Real nice living museum well worth the trip expect to spend the whole day and do a few miles of walking the ice cream is much better than the fiid
Been visiting and eating there for over 60 years, and staying for over 30. Whole family loves
Fun and hard to fully explore in a day
Always a fun place to visit and bring children.
OSV is an awesome place, easy going day for the family, nice exercise without realizing it, fun staff and a slice of American history. Membership is worth every penny, bored in June with a couple of kids? Let them run around seeing sheep and old houses! Easy day!
Fun place for the whole family. I've been in the Spring and around Christmas. Both times are lovely and very educational.
I was actually really surprised to discover how much my three year old enjoyed it.
This was a very nice find. We stayed at a local campground for a night and found the village. A lot of fun to walk around. The staff was amazing and knowledgeable. Very good experience. I highly recommend.
This was so much fun! Lots to see, do and learn. By the end of the day our legs and feet were sore in a good way from doing so much. I enjoyed going here with my daughter because it was a good learning experience about a time of our country as well as fun.
Have you ever wanted to go back in the past in a time machine? Well, Old Sturbridge Village will take you back to life in the 1800's. You'll not only see how life was, but you'll get to experience it. They have wonderful exhibitions of sheep shearing, wool dying (you can purchase the yarn in the gift shop), blacksmithing, tin work and pottery (both of those can also be purchased). You see all sorts of examples of life in the 1800's. They also have horse drawn carriage rides and boat rides. There are also interactive games for children to take part in. Very enjoyable time for the entire family.
Fun day and night painting party.
A visit to Old Sturbridge Village is truly stepping back in time. Everything is beautifully tended and the villagers are welcoming and so knowledgeable about their trades, crafts and homes.
Really awesome location with so much history. The cast were spot on and were very helpful.
Very interesting living history open early colonial town in the lives they lived a lot of walking though but very much worth the time
This place really takes you back into another era! The reenactors are so knowledgeable about everything from the food they make to the construction of the buildings to the industrial pieces. Block out a few hours to visit because you won't want to rush through it all. The food in the cafeteria is decent and not too overcharged
This is a wonderful trip back in time. The volunteer's are very knowledgeable about the era and more than willing to share their knowledge. I've been many times over the years with my daughters, one who's become a reenactor and each year she is part of the Rebels and Red Coats, you may have seen the milk maid somewhere during that weekend.
Old Sturbridge Village is a great time. We have a membership but only go occasionally due to our busy schedule. We don't mind supporting such a great cause. My kids have asked that we go more often because they enjoy it that much. History is made interesting for kids because they can see the lifestyle of people in their daily routines and interact with the re-inactors. Definitely worth a look.
I've loved visiting this place for many years. Their attention to detail gives an excellent experience every time we go there.
I've always enjoyed this museum since I was a kid. At 31 I love going to Redcoats and Rebels weekend to explore the camps and watch the huge reenactments!
It's surprisingly cool. Fun, interesting. Good ice cream.
Another great visit! The historians are so friendly and informative! Something new to learn everytime we go.
This place is fun just to walk around in.
Very excellent living history docents. Food was found wanting.
I wish it has accessable drinking water like fountains it was very hot. Other than that it was a lovely outing with the kids
Although it was the muddy time of year
Had a great time and everyone is so friendly. If your up this way please stop and enjoy it with family and friends
Amazing place to visit with the family...
Old Sturbridge Village is a great place to go and feel like your back in the 17 and 18 hundreds It makes you feel great.
Whats not to love they have great advents. Learn how people lived back than
Great family friendly with lots of things to see with a warm friendly staff
Beautiful authentic village. Easy walking, seating areas throughout, very good cafeteria on site. Quite enjoyable and educational.
