This Museum is classified in the category of Science museum.
It's worth going just to see the kinetic artworks. They are absolutely amazing and totally hypnotic.
This place is so much fun! It's very thought-provoking. It will take you at least a couple of hours to get through everything. And it's not just for techies and Engineers. There's a lot of really interesting cultural things here of course with a link to technology. Parking as you can imagine is a nightmare though.
Nice display on early MIT grad work on robotics. More of a gallery than museum.
Nice place with couple robots, MIT merch and a super awesome "idea room" for kids.
It had some interactive things that were interesting, but overall quite small and underwhelming. The gift shop with really cool though
Very cool, great amount of variety
We visited during spring-break and the place was a little crowded. Many of the coat/bag check lockers didn't work. Fun activities for children.
I thought this was going to be a lot cooler than it was. Not sure if it was worth the $10 per person we paid to get in. I thought there would be a lot more to see and do. The stuff they did have was very interesting, but for MIT it was a let down. I thought there would be a lot more history of the great alumnus that have made MIT what it is today.
Take a whole day to spend here! We went late morning/early afternoon and ran out of time. Paid extra to see the shows they had on, differ depending on the day. Lots of history and educational info
That's a great place. Very interesting.
Small but very interesting museum with ground breaking inventions related to MIT. I especially enjoyed the Gestural Engineering exhibit by Arthur Gánon - very unique
Disappointing with little that seems to reflect what MIT has done in the last 20 years so pretty outdated. The only good thing is that it's free!
We had a great afternoon here. It doesn't take all that long (we took maybe 1.5 hours) but it was enjoyable. My partner is a scientist and I love art, and it was the perfect intersection of art & science for us. As a student, it was only $5 per ticket - totally worth it. They have a cool little gift shop, too.
I thought I was going to be walking into a musem full of cool things that MIT students have invented and created, but it was basically an art and photography musem with a few of those things in it. It was good art but I don't really think it's worth the visit unless you're really into that kind of stuff.
The first floor doesn't offer too many exhibits, but the exhibits there are very cool. I love the second floor especially the kinetic and holographic section. Super awesome.
Awesome place to visit if you ever go to Boston
It was a cool place. The exhibits could have been better or more interesting but it was a cool experience. No food or drinks allowed, so don't bring your coffee unless you want to leave it at the front desk
Very cool museum. Might be a bit expensive though
Awesome place to spend a few hours learning about science and inventions
Small but lots of interesting stuff
Pretty good overall. I think the current exhibits on ship building and architecture are not what most people would be expecting at MIT. The various robotics demonstrations saved this from a 3 star (or less) review.
Nice experience to have for people who are more interested in engineering
Great museum and staff. A lot of things to see and activities to do but you need more than one day.
Z best:) Get the free pass with your student pass, or visit on free day. Wish it were bigger, maybe all floors, including basement in the future.
Small but interesting Museum. Gift shop is great too.
It's nice but there's really no way to clearly understand where to go and what to see. The engine operated sculptures are really interesting.
Very enjoyed the museum! Despite the name, it’s not really though an MIT Museum (it has little of MIT’s history per se), but more like a museum of technology that came out of it. It’s a great spot to come alone (it’s not so large) or with friends and family, and there are some interactive activities that children can also participate (at specific hours).
They got cool stuff, but not worth the price of admission
An exciting and thrilling place. It Sparks on creativity and love for science. It is small but extremely well built.
Fascinating displays and machinery. Just a pity the Polaroid experience was temporarily closed during my visit.
It's a nice musuem but very small and has limited exhibits.
A great combination of science and design. Small but super inspiring for people interested in mechanisms driving the world.
Very impressive. Enjoyed our visit. Excellent exhibits
I have seen better
This place is quite the gem. I've always wanted to go here and finally got the chance. Boston has always been a great source of learning the sciences for me. I was utterly shocked to see a Robotic piece I loved at the Museum of Science as a child in this exhibit! Really brought back many fond memories. This is a must go to attraction for anyone devoted to the sciences.
To be fair, the robot exhibition was mildly interesting - that will take five minutes to walk through. The whole "museum" can be toured in thirty... With very little gained from it. Definitely not worth the money, sadly.
Very interesting museum featuring a number of exhibits relevant to MIT. When I visited, the ground floor showed a number of robotic devices and the upper are had lots of interesting displays about ship architecture, including drawings, notebooks, models and a number of other things. Pretty specific, but very interesting. There were also a number of mechanical art pieces on display as well as a very interesting photo exhibit about the Bauhaus movement.
Great Place to visit at Boston. I am from Indonesia and so happy to see everything inside the museum. Great services.
Rather dated exhibits. We were very much expecting more recent science and engineering. MIT after all is supposed to be on the cutting edge. My preschooler was so very interested in everything we saw, but was told at ever turn to not touch, be careful. That does not lend itself well to encouraging an interest in STEAM. The one interactive science experiment was well done and the presenters were engaging and interesting. Well done with that one. Also, there is not a hologram exhibit anymore like their description suggests.
Small museum dedicated to some great contributors of the MIT and the tools used historically in the institute. The area with the kinetic and mechanical sculptures is really neat! The area dedicated to robotics could be improved.
Great displays, would require more on site explanation
MIT's museum was on the smaller side, but very interesting. Though the majority focus is on recently outdated technology, it is extremely educational and shows you where our technological advances have come from and where they could be headed. The major exhibits included robotics, brain science, and more artistic and creative "abstract machines" that did nothing more than delight and entertain with mechanical movements that had no real-world applications. These were truly fascinating. Entrance price seems a bit high for the number of exhibits.
That is MIT Museum it a rare place with days of activities and exhibits to explore and learn. I would recommend taking two visits to take in all the extraordinary historical finds and nature. The science of the earth is amazing to see all the theories. A family could spend all day here . So maybe come early, take a break for a meal and then explore the rest of the place or just plan two visits to be able to enjoy each educational exhibit fully. Most of the exhibits are interactive and fun for all ages.
An amazing collection of pieces of everything from engineering to architecture to art. Sheds a musuem-like point of view on many types of modern sciences. This musuem is fit for all ages and there are also discounts for students!
Very different museum, exhibits from boat design to holograms, to mechanic motion, and architecture. Worth the trip.
The place has so many strange mechanical scriptures. It's honestly wild and awesome.
Most of it is mostly for people interested in engineering, but I think everyone would love the Gestural Engineering exhibition, do not miss it if in Boston, also the robots on the ground floor are admirable!
Pretty cool museum with lots of fun interactive models and functional art pieces. Not sure it was worth the money but if you have extra cash maybe a cool place to check out for young adults and adults.
We came for the robots and tech. There are ZERO robots or tech. Just a few pictures from eastern Europe taken by an alumni, a few kinetic sculptures and a bunch of boat models. By far the most useless museum I've ever been to. The store is fine. Skip this museum, life is too short to waste time in there.
Very interesting items on display, interesting backstories on them as well. Makes me wish I attend MIT myself. Makes me want to create.
Very small, boring and not up to date at all. Good for old people who like stairs and architecture. Bossy staff and over priced.
Best part was the restroom and gift shop. Not worth your time or money.
Fantastic show of object photographs from the Bauhaus school.
Very interesting things...more than meets the eye
It’s interesting. Very small. And I think it would be better if they had more emphasis on computing.
Great little museum with some interesting exhibits. $10 adult admission. Allow 1.5-2 hours for a visit. Good gift shop, too.
This museum was so interesting and fun! My two teen girls loved it. They said they learned more here than they would have sitting at school.
A small but amazing museum, my whole family learned a lot from there sailing, mechanic construction design. This is a unique museum I have ever visited.
Loved seeing a lot of show pieces you will have seen in technology documentaries though the last decade or so.
Mind blowing collection of scientifically, technological, art stuff. Generally takes 2-3 hours to absorb the place completely. If I remember it right, entry is 50% discounted for folks in college right now, for general crowd it is $10 Sharing a few videos to give a taste of gestural engineering projects shared on first floor during Aug 2018
Love this museum. It's a must see if you are in Boston. It has something to suit everyone. Loved the robotics exhibit. It's very informative and I like there is plenty of seating so you can rest your legs when you need to! Staff are really helpful and there's loads to see for what you pay
Neat if it's free, not worth paying money since it is so small and more like an art museum.
Disappointing. For being MIT..I was hoping for more..2 stars at best
The museum is just a 5 minute walk away from the main campus. It has a very friendly staff and a wide array of exhibits. The second floor has some pretty amazing stuff that are both interactive and educational. Great place to stop by for families or prospective students ☺
Love the campus and the muesum is a must visit
Not a terrible place but not that impressive. Paid ten bucks to get out of the heat for a while.
High reputation but not really worth to visit. No big thing to show. Save your money for another museum or just walk in the campus of MIT is more funny and free.
Excellent place especially if you are interested in Robotics. You can see/ learn about some of Marvin Minsky’s work. There is also a Prince Rupert’s Drop on display. The technology based art installations are very attractive. It will take around 3 to 4 hours to complete. There is a student discount available but I am not sure if it is based on time and day of visit. The staff are very friendly.
I was rather disappointed with this museum. I was expecting more informational displays of the past achievements by MIT (you get a little bit of that) but, instead, you will see mechanical sculptures, some architectural drawings, and robotic projects of graduate students from the 90's. It's not that those are interesting but not worth seeing with the admission fees.
Nice place to visit if you have days left on your trip.
Very professional and courteous. Even gave my car a wash and cleaned which is really appreciated greatly.
A small museum but knowledgeable
This place is amazing, the staff really awesome and kind
Great place to bring your kids, brought my nephew and he had a blast. As an added bonus he was exhausted by the time we got home.
Fascinating expo on robotics and motion
Many wonderful exhibits. We've visited several times. The kinetic sculptures and the robotics displays are always interesting. My favorite is the LISP machine. Most of the many visitors during our Free Fun Friday visit had no idea what they were walking past.
Great place, will take 45mins to an hour max so it's not really big. Large area dedicated to Herreshroff and his sail boat plans and there is one lovely section which has mechanical interactive exhibits by Arthur Ganson. Polaroid exhibition opens in October 19.
Great way to spend an afternoon, doesn't take up the whole day but still spent a very good amount of time there. Pretty amazing to check out
Great experience, not great for children.
Amazing but too small
Very small and not worth the money. What it has is cool though.
Awesome... recommend..
Disappointed. One exhibit was closed. Expected to see more.
Fantastically, well done exhibits but the hologram portion seemed a bit small.
It a self guided museum which very very small for the 10$ cost value. I think there would more value of just exploring the campus for free. I hope in the very near future that the museum would offer self audio guide tour complementary with the cost of entry. As MIT can use get students built it for a school project.
So much amazing history missing. MIT deserves a much bigger site. Great shop and staff though.
I went to the museum during my recent visit specifically to see the folding car prototype. By the time I finished with the first floor, I found some students setting up a virtual reality display for a children's group that would be coming in on the weekend. Much to my surprise the guy offered to let me play with it! This is the kind of thing where you're "playing" a sport against an opponent on a big screen while you're moving your arm to simulate, in this case, swinging a tennis racket. As a middle-aged woman with no kids I really enjoyed messing around with it, and it was nice of him to offer just because I stopped to watch what they were doing. Because of this, though, I skipped the other floor because I needed to get back. I saw what I went there for and had a little fun in addition, and I found the student work to be
Fun place to stop by and see some neat gadgets and milestones in research. Not a huge location, but free and worth a look if you have some time to kill. Watch out for the special exhibits, they can be incredibly unique and inspired.
Idea hub was a great spot for kids and adults to get creative!
Very cool place. You only need about 2-3 hours to check it out. Parking is the real challenge.
A bit too small to be honest. I was hoping for a larger area with many crazy tech items, that part was rather limited. However, the exhibitions are still rather nice, clean and well organized. Shop area is a bit too cramped.
Great exhibits, particularly the mechanical contraptions. They also hold many events in the museum — pretty cool.
Interesting place! Fun gift shop, a must see!
There are two floors with the upper being much larger than the lower. The lower floor has technology and the like, but the upper floor is just an art exhibit. If you're looking for a technology exhibit, go elsewhere.
Great fun place. A little small but good price.
We loved it. 3 kids and 6 adults and we all enjoyed the experience. And I was able to get in free for having banking with bank of America. And students (with student ID or email) get in free also.
This is still a great museum but I do miss the robots and MIT pranks
Wonderful learning place for the little ones.
I've been coming to this museum for many years. In the past, the kids with me enjoyed the many interactive exhibits. THEY ARE ALL GONE. Even the staff at the door didn't know what I was talking about. The kids couldn't wait to leave; they were so disappointed and bored. For me, it was a waste of the admission fee.
Pretty cool collections of artifacts and historical objects. The second floor is very fun! Also a lot of interesting and silly merchandise can be found in the gift shop!
Its okey im just recomended to have like artist things in the subenirs but thats all.
Honestly not what I expected. Quite disappointed with the museum.
If this museum lacks in size, it more than made up for it in terms of quality. Several special exhibits truly dazzled - from visualization of brain to history of robotics ( seen from the perspective of the role MIT scientists played in its evolution) to gestural engineering, the display never ceased to amaze. Go, and enjoy. This was one of the coolest museums I have ever seen. Particularly enjoyed the section devoted to the human brain. Bought a hoodie from the gift shop. Well worth the time and money spent to see this museum!
With girlfriend~ Pretty amazing working combining engineering and art. The store offers something amazing!
MIT Museum is different from MIT science Museum. When I went few exhibit areas are closed for renovation. The second floor had fascinating mechanical displays which were really cool.
It was alright. Not expensive but pretty light on exhibits - you can get through pretty quickly and they do have some cool things in gift shop but I'm not going to lie, we were a little disappointed. I guess our expectations were too high.
Great museum very interesting exhibits and nice shop
Free admission if you have a BoA account!
Kinda small, only three exhibits: but they were amazing and the staff was very friendly and helpful.
Surely a good place to take kids to. Nice for adults as well. Be sure to interact with some the art work.
Wouldn’t recommend to spend your time and money. If you want to escape heat and put your tired feet to super tiring go here. Nothing for kids to do. Total disappointment under the name of MIT Even it’s super boaring for Engineers
Fantastic! Wish more people could come and get a better sense of the mixture of arts and technology.
Very interesting places to visit. Well worth it
Some very good exhibits. I especially liked the one on the School of Architecture and the gallery of Arthur Gunson's (sp?) work.
Cool little museum with two floors of various displays ranging from architecture and design to robotics and funny technological art installations. Some very impressive items like the first Polaroid camera. The information provided is often quite general... would love to have more in depth explanations of the items on display, ie. the physics/chemistry behind.
The hand-on activity was great for the kids.
Very small but free!!!!! Show I happened across was WONDERFUL. This pic first floor, 2nd floor best.
MIT Museum it a rare place with days of activities and exhibits to explore and learn.
Very nice museum! Lots of active exhibitions
Cool boat designs and creepy gizmos.
Absolutely incredible place. Almost spent all day there. Lots of interactive activities. Don't miss the gestural engineering exhibit!
Great collection of unique and thought provoking sculptures, pictures... time well spent!!
Great (if small) place - lots of events and rotating exhibits.
This s the best museum that I have ever been to so far, it has so many interesting finds, all the detailed hand crafted boats models, and blueprints of the order boats, great gift store, absolutely kids friends place ever been!!!!
Entertaining and informative. Highly recommend
Small but interesting museum. Mainly showcases robots~ great for kids
Maps said it’s working till 6, but it was closed at 5. Boston trip ruined.
It was cool to see all the different simple machines
This is a very good place for us to get educated as a engineering student! I love this place due to how everything in there is lively and original. I get to learn lots of amazing things about robots and artificial intelligent. Overall, I would recommend you guys to this amazing place!
Wonderfull experience!!!! A lot of tech and art from Bauhaus droids and a lot of innovation.
I expected a lot more technology, and I personally think it is worth about $3 per adult.
Lots of cool sciencey stuff there, including some hologram thing which was pretty awesome
Pretty small .. but the displays were amazing
Rather small, yet fantastic museum. The seasonal exhibition 'beauty of the Brain' was simply outstanding. It was a very comprehensive journey across the timeline of tools used in brain research. From the experimental work done in the last century to the very recent methods pioneered at MIT. Simply fascinating! The other parts of the exhibition very cleverly combined art with engineering. Considering the small entry fee (5$ students, 10$ normal adults) it should be worth it, although you might want to check what is on.
Relatively small museum. It is open every day. One may mistake that it only consists of one floor. You will see right at the entrance the stairs to the second floor. The gift shop is especially good for stuff for children. Student projects are also exhibited.
Fabulous gift shop. Entrance $10 adults $5 kids. Great vfm. My 16yr old son loved it as did I.
Smaller than I expected but some really cool things.
Expensive. Not worth the price ($20). No edge technology. Nothing impressive. The only good thing was the artist expo... (
The museum was great it had so many inventions scientists had made and below the invention it showed a history of how people used their imagination to create it and and most of the time in the beginning they weren't even trying to make it. To sum it up, the MIT museum is a great place.
Very cool, my kids loved the robots on the first deck and the interactive workshop. Kinda small, 2 floors, free for military and families. Killed a few hours and great food nearby when you get tired
This very great place to start your trip. Please watch all automatic machine, specially hand writing machine.
Awesome place with great history about Science and Technology.
Nice museum it is a great place for kids under 10 years. A little disappointing for adults. it has a great gift shop.
Great exhibits that really showcase some of the cool things that have come out of MIT. Tickets aren't that expensive either.
Empty museum. Only interesting is the room with 6..7 holograms
Fun small museum. The museum shop is pretty cool! The hologram guide explained to us how holograms work which made it special :)
Awesome things on display, lots of great toys, books, and gadgets in the shop. Great for all ages
Hoped to see more projects but still it was a great experience !
Spent a good part of a Saturday afternoon at the MIT Museum. As another reviewer said, it's not just for nerds. There are all the MIT nerdy things - robotics, computers, etc. But also lots of terrific kinetic art and stories of real, interesting people. We went there on this particular day because my son wanted to see the special exhibit "The Beautiful Brain: The Drawings of Santiago Ramon y Cajal" who is like the godfather of modern neuroscience. The exhibit was wonderful, moving, and very informative, even for those of us who aren't neuroscientists. Great place to spend a rainy Saturday afternoon (and then go to the Cambridge Brewing Company for beer!).
It's ok... But very few things to see
If you like whacky gizmos, go here!
Lots of interesting things to see at MIT - the work by students and faculty is always impressive! You can read the details if you like but if not, there’s lots of interactive pieces throughout.
Amazing museum! Awesome robots and other cool stuff.
There was a special free event tonight and j was fortunate to go to it by happenstance.
Nice but in need of improvement. For freaks like me ;-)
A great and interesting museum to stroll around. In a past life, I may have worked in STEM because this museum fascinated me!
Going inside the disrupted and beautiful mind of a genius: Ok, ok... it is true that it is not what you expect. If you wish to see huge robots able to end up with Terminator and a robitic fauna you will be disappointed. Instead you will find the lab of a toy maker, small but complicated pieces of art, that make the illusion of robots trying to become human beings, trying to get our obsessions and hobbies, as if someone was able to predict human nature with a couple of behaviours. I whish such area was a little darkness in order to get the whole sensation, but was for sure an experience I did not expect! Just because of this room it is worth, the rest of it looks like are there in order to cover space. This is why I do not put the highest qualification. There are some activities for kids, the ticket costs 10$, but if you are a student it will be 5$.
The Gestural Engineering exhibit is worth the price of entry. Pretty cool
