REVIEWS OF Emily Dickinson Museum IN Massachusetts

Beautiful place, very peaceful and loved the recorded guided tour around the property. The staff is very well informed and made the visit quite pleasant. It's such a powerful experience to walk around the house and be in the very room this prodigy lived.

I adore Emily Dickinson and finally had the chance to venture out to Amherst in early May. The tour was amazing! Our tour guide was friendly, funny, and full of facts about ED. The tour even ran over time, which I personally appreciated because I did not feel rushed and felt that our tour guide wanted us to have an exceptional experience. The staff were so welcoming and enthusiastic. The price of a tour is unbelievably low. I cannot wait to visit again!

If you are familiar with the work of Dickinson, you are wasting time reading this review - just go for it. But if you are unfamiliar with her, it might be a good idea to read.some.of her poetry. If you don't know who Emily Dickinson is, probably you can skip as alt of information is biographical, still you can learn something about the history of the town if not the poet herself.

A neat experience for someone (like me) who was curious about the poet. The guide was very knowledgeable.

We took an incredible 90-minute tour of Emily Dickinson's home and that of her brother, next door. The tour described the poet's family, her life and experience and her poems. What a wonderful, informative experience! The tour guide was exceptionally knowledgeable. Very highly recommended - five stars!

I'm not a huge Emily Dickinson fan but this visit gave us great insight into her life and times. The staff were very pleasant. An informative tour.

Laurie Stewart

Our tour guide (I think his name was Charles) was excellent, putting Dickinson's work in historical and social context. Both houses were also structurally interesting. I'd go back again just because I now have a ton of follow-up questions. Be aware that, in order to go into the houses you must pay for a tour ($15). It seemed a bit high to me at first but once the tour was underway it was clear the price of admission was more than worth it.

Great tour

A very nice experience visiting the home where the famous poet lived. The visit includes a personal tour, and our guide certainly cared a great deal about Emily Dickinson. He recited a lot of her poetry from memory and the visit lasted nearly two hours. The main house in particular is quite nice, as are the gardens.

Grounds are amazing. Great and informative museum. Definitely not to be missed!

Oh, this is a must see. The tour is enjoyable, the guide was so very well informed, and the sites are historical and fascinating. You actually get to see her bedroom where she did most of her writing. Audience participation was suggested. I had a wonderful time. I was very pleased.

Super informative and in-depth overview of Dickinson's life, family, friends, and poetry. I received an hour-long tour of Dickinson's home, her brother's next-door, and the grounds. Our guide was extensively knowledgeable, enthusiastic, and personable. We really felt the spirit of Emily and her love of writing, nature, and life throughout the tour. A wonderful experience for both newbies and experts alike!

Beautiful house in a gorgeous area. Great place to wander around, and a must-see site if you're a fan of the author. Convenient to lots of local shops and restaurants -- not hard to make an afternoon of this! That said -- definitely check the hours before you visit.

Wonderful tour. The tour guides were very knowledgeable and presented the material very well. The exhibits were, of course, authentic. For the most part, the house is as the Dickinsons left it well over a hundred years ago. I would definitely recommend this for anyone who enjoys Emily Dickinson's poetry.

Tammy Maginnis

Interesting tour and beautiful grounds. Well worth supporting.

Bianca Thomas

Fun and educational for the family. Staff was very friendly and very knowledgeable. Staff also showed excitement and eagerness to teach the history of Emily Dickinson.

Linda Taggart

We had a private tour. It was very informative and interesting offering new insights into the Dickinson family for me.

This property is the place where Emily Dickinson was born, lived and died, and it is next door to the house of her brother, Austen. A tour including both houses takes about an hour, and at the time of this writing costs fifteen dollars with discounts for students and seniors. I was fascinated by what I learned about the poet's life and work, and I was surprised that I knew so little about her prior to visiting the homestead. Dickinson was very private (to the point of reclusive), and I was unaware that she didn't publish her poetry. Most of her work was unfamiliar and unavailable to the public until after her death. Our guide (Gary) is very knowledgeable and passionate regarding the poet, her work and her home. He also has published a book which I acquired at the bookshop on premises. I find that it sheds quite a bit of light on the poets work. This tour was a delight, and I recommend it to anyone visiting Amherst.

Make sure you make reservations. We drove almost 2 hours to get there and a tour bus showed up an hour late for their tour, so we got a very rushed 5 minute tour. We chose to leave rather than wait another couple of hours for an opening.. So disappointed.

The house and grounds are beautiful! Really great place to visit!

I have been a fan and a teacher of Dickinson for many years. The hour tour was amazing. Loved Zoe, our guide. So insightful. Made me see with fresh eyes so many new things. The house has been on my literary bucket list for a long long time. Well worth a visit, even if you're not into poetry. And if you're not, why not? Will teach Dickinson in a whole new way.

The Emily Dickinson Museum was incredibly educational. The tours are about an hour long and take you through both Emily’s house and her brother’s house right next door. You get to see her bed where she died and the desk where she wrote. Her house is in much better condition than her brother’s, though. Many bolts hold up the walls, but they are in the progress of restoring some of the major rooms. All in all, it was a fantastic experience. Those who are fans of the English language, literature, or poetry will love their time here.

I took a 4 hour detour to visit the site while going to New Haven. It was totally worth it! Basically you can feel her poems in the air. The guide was very knowledgeable and helpful. Keep in mind that self-guided tour is not allowed. For a bonus, the town was wonderful, too!

Audree Roberts

I have waited 20 years to make it to this historical tour. We took our children 14, 13, 11 and 5 and they have a new found respect for Emily Dickinson and a new passion for poetry. My husband enjoyed the other Dickinson Hoemstead and all of the original architecture. The tour guide was very animated, knowledgeable and answered any questions we had.

The museum has restored a few rooms in the original house back to the time that Emily lived in the house. The tour is more about the story though. The grounds are a nice stroll also. If you are a fan of Emily, you will enjoy it, but kids are quickly bored and there isn't a lot to see.

It was years ago that I enjoy Miss Dickinson's Museum with it's history and stories. The town of Amherst is a treat in itself but being able to visit this famous and unusual spot made it all the better. If you are anywhere near Northampton or Springfield, a little ways further south, drive a few miles north and enjoy Amherst. Northampton, home to Smith College, has many historical sites as well. The Hotel Northampton, if memory serves, was founded in the very late 1700's. Beautiful bar called the Oak Room. Worthy of the name with magnificent wood work.

Knowledgeable tour guides gave a deep insight into the life and writing of Emily Dickinson. I'm not usually a poetry reader, but Emily's work is compelling. I can't wait to start reading her poems and letters. The brother's house is a special treat for those who love homes in the original state, and original furnishings. I highly recommend a visit for history and literature buffs.

We took the 90-minute tour in Amherst, Mass on Saturday, Aug 22. Our verdict: Excellent and most stimulating. Great to see where the poet lived. The Evergreens, the house of Austin Dickinson was particularly interesting as a family time capsule, virtually untouched since Emily Dickinson's niece passed away.

Nethaniel Colon

Gotta do a tour. It's 10 if u a teacher. Kids and Teens are free. Otherwise it's 15 for adults. Totally worth it...the evergreens more impressive than the homestead.

This was a wonderful tour, we learned a lot & the buildings & grounds were beautiful! Hope to visit again soon. But no parking lot! Parking is on street with meters so bring change. I think we needed $1 for the tour, but didn't hang around & look around afterward.

Well, I have read the reviews and I beg to differ. This 90 minute tour of both houses was a tour of houses, mostly. We learned about the types of pianos used back in those days. The fireplaces were discussed ad nauseam, and the guide even had the nerve to say, "Well more about the fireplaces later." Hey, what about the poems? What was a day in the life of Emily Dickinson like? No clue. The white dress on the 2nd floor was only mentioned when someone in the group asked if it was an original. "No it isn't." She was called, "the lady in white, after all. But that was it for the dress. In one room was a display on the structure of a Dickinson poem, but seemed geared more for children and we spent 5 minutes in that room. Of course we heard about Emily's brother Austin and his affair with a woman named Mabel Todd. But what about the poems. Maybe I got on the architectural tour. Next time I'd like to hear about one the foremost American poets, Emily Dickinson.
