Some interesting things here to see that you won't see anywhere else. On a hot summer day, it can be a bit stuffy inside (not much in the way of air conditioning). When we visited, it was free (no entrance fee). Would it be worth the normal $7 to get in? I'm not sure.

Small and modest but very nice. Learned some interesting stuff about the coast guard.

The building it self has a story and it has fascinating displays my son was on a sub in the Navy for four years and really liked it.

This is a great museum that will take you through the history of the local community and the US Coast Guard. There are displays about how boats were built, what sorts of goods were brought to port, and why the Custom House itself was made of essentially concrete. The staff know their stuff, which makes me a little disappointed that I missed the guided tours. Still, for the price, this was an excellent stop for us in Massachusetts.

Nice little museum in a beautiful spot. Visiting off-season on a week day, we were lucky to hear commentary from two knowledgeable docents, both of whom were clearly enthusiastic about history and Newburyport!

Had a great guided tour by a very knowledgeable and passionate guide. Learned a lot about the history of the building as well as the era in sailing surrounding the clipper ships. Highly recommend the guided tour as opposed to a self-guided one. Our tour was to last a half hour but our guide went on for over an hour. :)

The Custom House Maritime Museum is well worthy of a trip to Newburyport, MA if you are a fan of any of a myriad of special nautically related interests, including: maritime history, boating, boat craft, model ship building, American History, Newburyport History, sailors handicrafts and more. Come to learn, be amazed, and sometimes enjoy viewing your own family history through the artifacts on display. So many of our American ancestors are tied to Atlantic ship crossings, and so much of our economic development stems from laborers' and merchants' work on the waters of the Merrimack and Atlantic. And Museum Membership offers some outstanding perks at a low annual fee. Please inquire. The only caveat to a visit is that the building has no elevators for those who require them to date. - Isa B.
