Rich and eclectic collection. Painting includes single biggest Fitz Henry Lane collection; Marsden Hartley, John Singer Sargent, Winslow Homer, an AMAZING riff on the goddess Diana by Umberto Romano. Giant Fresnel lens fills a whole room, amazing. A Harborfront diorama made for the 1892 Columbian exhibition.

Surprisingly great museum and very good expositions.

We loved the paintings of Fitz Henry Lane. There were lots of other things to see too, not just paintings, like a one- person boat which crossed the Atlantic. Lots of local history. We chose it during Free Fun Friday because it was relatively close to our home in Maine and we were tired from our week's activities. We were pleasantly surprised by the collection and spent a lot more time there than we anticipated.

Lisa Samuels

High marks for the venue: elegant friendly and curiously laid out. Redone historical building with good flow and facilities. Working hard for its community. Good Winslow Homer exhibit in today, generally conservative and local/nautical art focus.

David Lux

An extremely well curated museum focused the artistic heritage of the Cape Ann region. A worthwhile focus! This is a region with a genuine claim on our attention. The history of work (fishing and quarries) and immigration provide context that works well to hold our attention. We spent a bit over an hour in the galleries, saw a lot, left with more to see. We'll be back.

Stephen Harte

An outstanding museum focusing on what makes Gloucester unique. You can easily spend 2-3 hours here. I highly recommend taking advantage of a tour with a docent. The 60-minute tour was informative and engaging. After you are finished at the museum, walk toward the water a couple of blocks and you'll have plenty of great cafes and local shops to choose from.

Kit Ligand

Charming regional museum. There is parking across the street and it's a short walk from the commuter rail so highly accessible. The entrance is wheelchair accessible accessible. The experience of this museum is very pleasing. I like my museums full of unexpected corners and varied spaces and the Cape Ann museum does not disappoint. You can wander from intimate galleries of artwork and folk and historical art and artifacts into soaring spaces accented by monumental sculptures in settings of warm, honey brown woodwork so the overall sensual atmosphere is delightful and stimulating. The artwork itself ranges from the classical fine arts to the raw, daily expression of folk art and artifacts. Whimsy and profundity are side by side, giving a rich and textured feel for the region. Parking is metered lot. There is a reasonable fee for museum entrance. If you plan a day trip, you can find a range of dining nearby. I am planning a return before long to try the Portuguese restaurant not far from the museum since Portuguese fish stew is one of the joys of life. You can feed mind, soul, and body on the same trip!

I was hosting a small group 6 persons from abroad on a Sunday Afternoon May 5th, "19. On an Architectural and Sculpture Walk of the Brosdwalk and City Hall area. Eecstopped inn the Court Yard of CA Museum to point out the works of George Demetrios whose fountain sculpture of his wife and renowned Folly Cove Group Member was draped in its winter cloak. This small group of distinguished are enthusiast want to enter the lobby and get a sense of things. We did not have time for a full tour. On entering alone, I asked for permission to enter the reception area, only. We were denied. I am not judging the whole museum. The one person not authority did not honor an opportunity for a 2 minute public relations and Gloucester Hospitalty opportunity.

A fabulous Hidden Gem in downtown Gloucester. We expected a two or three room Museum in a home. This is a major Museum facility in a modern building located over three different floors and connected to a historical home that is available for tours with a guide as well. There's a great amount of seafaring exhibits including lighthouses, boats and Marine paintings, but also exhibits related to printmaking, music-making, and photography. This Museum is on a par with the Peabody Essex Museum, but of course much smaller compared to that amazing facility.

Great museum with a wide range of exhibits! It will definitely have something to suite everyone’s taste. It takes at least 1.5 hours to go through, so give plenty of time!!

Katrina Ahuja

This is such a great museum for such a small town. There are lots of Asian artifacts dating back to the times when Gloucester was trading directly with Asia. There is a whole room of paintings by Gloucester artist, Fitz Hugh Lane, as well! There are many pieces of art from the fishing industry, but my favorite piece in the museum is one of Walker Hancock's studies for his sculpture for the Pennsylvania Railroad WWII Memorial.

Eleanor Baker

This is truly a hidden gem!! Current Winslow Homer exhibit brings together wonderful pieces from all over to Gloucester. Another amazing collection is a large display of nautical artwork by Fitz Hugh Lane. Worth spending an at least an hour or two browsing.

Orhan Orgun

Very nice little museum, great glimpse into local life and history.

Briant Gaudet

Great collection of Fitz Henry Lane paintings. Also fabulous exhibit of the Working waterfront of Gloucester.

This is a wonderful institution for art and history buffs. There are treasures around every corner. The waterfront and the fishermen are represented well, here. The artists community has contributed so much to this area and their legacies live on. This is a valuable resource for the North Shore and beyond.

Nice museum. Took a tour while there and learned some interesting things. They also have an authentic British red coat taken by a pirateer. The lighthouse light is cool, and so are the many sculptures... especially one of an angel caring up a soldier 'into heaven'. There are many beautiful paintings, maritime history items, and rooms to tour from the historic home that is also part of this museum. I think anyone would enjoy this museum! Check it out!
