REVIEWS OF Boott Cotton Mills Museum IN Massachusetts

Nadine Barnett

The fact that they have an actual weaving floor with working looms is AMAZING! You will definitely need some ear plugs but it is worth it. There is usually someone there actually working the machines and making dishcloths that you can then buy at the museum store...how cool is that!

Jared Knowles

Such great history, excellent exhibits, and plenty of information and tours to keep you busy. I recommend the canal tours, which really give you a feel for the history here.

Great history and demonstrations of the textile mills and the equipment used. Children may not like it as much due to the main focus is on cloth and textiles, and have you ever taken a child clothes shopping? Point made.

The Museum covers all functions of the Textile Mill. Entry Passes are good for 7 days. The first floor still has the over head belt driven machines. During normal work hours they are run by a few park staff and manufacture fabric that is available for purchase at the Visitor Center.

I love history. So when I found out my geography class was going to the mills after our industrial revolution unit, I was beyond excited. You get to learn about how we built an economy and how we began to introduce mass production.

Billy Allen

This was a great museum. We visited the mill, and thought the site was interesting and well done. The actual room of working looms was everyone’s favorite. We also visited the house next door too where workers stayed. I wish we had more time to start at the visitors center and take the boat tour. I thought the park was just the factory but really there is far more there to take in.

Joseph Lam

They have great programs for the kids here.

The Boott Cotton Mills Museum is great fun. For individuals and families the museum is accessed at your own pace. I attended an elementary school field trip with my son and that experience was led by an educator. The field trip was very hands on for the kids and covered many aspects of the Mills including environmental and social impact. The museum includes many preserved items from the mill and the mill room still contains working looms that are in operation during museum hours. Parking is convenient with multiple locations near the museum in downtown Lowell.

Hsiu Chang

This national park is unlike the "nature" parks, but just an eye-opening and educational. The museum has a large mill room that is a good example of the sites and sounds of a mill at work (they even offer you ear protection). We got a private tour with a great guide, she was extremely knowledgeable, spent a great deal of time with us, and answered all our questions. Other times the tour group would probably be larger, but on a quiet Monday it was great. Be sure and watch the optional video about the industrial revolution as it helps to set the stage for the history of this area as well as the entire country. I was a little skeptical of this site, but would recommend it highly to all.

Susan M

Great historical museum with real working looms from early 1900's. Loads of information.

We arrived at about lunchtime which meant that we got to see the weaving room quiet. Then they started up the looms and the noise became almost overwhelming. We spent a long time talking to one of the weavers who explained the subtle details of the looms -- including the ONE seat that is attached to a single loom! The mechanical ingenuity in these machines is remarkable -- even if it did start with some old fashioned industrial espionage. Well worth a visit -- if only to be grateful that you live in the 21st century.

My fault might be more with Google then with the museum, as we never got into the museum. We were visiting the area and I have always wanted to visit these mills, and after checking with Google Maps, we saw that the museum opens at 9:30 (this was in the winter months on a Saturday). When we arrived at 10, we found the place closed, and would not open until 12. We were not the only ones, as a couple others had shown up saying that the website says 9:30. Someone suggested that we visit the nearby quilt museum which we did. In the meantime, I called the number on the website and found out that the National Heritage Visitors Center opens at 9:30, not the mills. As we were on schedule with a 6 hour drive ahead of us, we decided to skip the mills and move on. A real shame. The place looks to be spectacular and worthy of a visit in the warmer months.

You can see the actual machines. A very helpful Mill worker will show you how the machine works. Videos of workers talking about their experiences. They have miniturized replicas of the machines and lets you try it. Makes for an Interactive experience. My girls 6 and 11 y/o were able to enjoy the tour.

Kris Gonet

The working early 20th century looms on the ground floor are mesmerising but the noise from just the few that are running is enough to provide a taste of what life was like for the (mostly) women who worked there. On the upper floor are displays of artefacts from the town's transformation from farming to cotton milling. A 20-minute film is a good backgrounder if you can get past the white male bias and odd patriotism. This museum is well worth a visit since it is a rare piece of the industrial past that has been preserved. There is a free tram that runs between the museum and the visitors centre but a round about walk takes in the canal and river. There is free parking behind the visitor centre (get the ticket validated in the visitor centre). Entry was just $6 an adult.

Rhett Butler

A must see if youre in the area and want to learn about history of industrial revolutions. A great meseum, well kept and very educational.

Awesome place, but very LOUD. Be sure to wear your ear plugs in certain areas. They provide you with prepackaged earplugs. It was what I expected and so much more. You can take your time a watch the machines make fabric the way they did years ago with the force of water with all of the pulleys. Just amazing. Do we really need electric for everything? Use water. Amazing. Museum is a good size so come earlier if you want to take your time to read and watch the displays. There are a few floors of history to see. Would go again. Check your local library, they might provide day passes and 4th grades get in free via different pass. I would inquire.
