Very interesting and informative exhibits. Staff was friendly and knowledgeable. A great way to spend the afternoon.

Swamy SK

First time for me found the place on google very informative and amazing to comprehend those yester years .

Bethany Jones

A great museum with information and exhibits about the medicine of the civil war. We enjoyed our time greatly!

Joan McAfoos

Very helpful employees, very knowledgeable. Amazing details about medicine during the civil war. We have come a long way!

John Alvarado

Lovely museum, we have come a long way caring and treating soldiers in the battle fields since the Civil War. My children learned a lot today.

April Kesler

If you are into history, civil war history, or medical history then make a stop here. This museum exceeded my expectations and being a civil war nerd and a person that works in surgery and teaches surgery I have high expectations when it comes to both. I had a blast going through this museum.

Nails Guts & Glam

Very nice museum, Great displays and models and very nice sections on surgical instruments and nurses.

Mark Neumann

Nice museum with lots of interesting material

Kayel Conklin

Nice place I really enjoyed how they took the extra step to follow a few people's lives throughout the entire exhibit. I went with a speech pathologist and a nurse administrator they said it was the highlight of their weekend.

Willie Hosie

Much smaller than most other museums I've visited (although being close to DC provides an unfair comparison). The sections on disproving myths of the era proved immensely enlightening.

Ann Warneka

Gem of a Civil War Museum in Harrisburg PA. The speakers are outstanding they have both speakers once a month in the spring of 2018.

Ray Stevens

Very thorough and interesting details about field medicine during the Civil War

Jim Gardon

As a retired Army Nurse I found this place absolutely fascinating! The artifacts so well preserved coupled with the personal stories, letters, vignettes and local historical references were pricelessly woven into a cohesive presentation. I know I missed something and can’t wait to return!

Teddy Lados

Very nice museum, admission is a little on the pricey side though ($9.50 for adults). Give yourself at least 2 hours to see it all.

Janelle Whary

Very informative! The employees are super helpful and knowledgeable. We are from outside Gettysburg and we came to Frederick for a weekend getaway. We enjoyed our visit.

Vanth Dreadstar

Medical history and reenactment actirs were knowledgeable of the period. Worth the visit, especially for medical professionals

imonhere Now

Wonderful museum, I enjoyed every moment

John Scott

Really well done - you can spend an hour or an afternoon, up to you. But I learned a lot.

Matt Doyle

A wonderful 2 hour journey through the amazing advances in medicine during the civil war. Bonus it is right in the heart of downtown Frederick's shopping and dining!

C T

Very interesting display of Medical artifacts and depictions of Civil War conditions. Not necessarily a place I would recommend for the squeamish stomach though as there are several graphic and disturbing exhibits...

Eric Waciega

Really well done exhibits. Very affordable entrance fee. Easily spent 2 hours here. Only negative is some of the interactive aspects of the exhibits were not functioning at the time. I dont think this detracted from the visitor experience significantly. Everything else about this museum was A+

C. P. Englander

Received a gift of membership and was absolutely delighted to find a well-planned exhibit and amazingly knowledgeable and friendly docents. Well worth the trip from Baltimore.

Tony Amos

Fun place to visit. I had a great time.

Kristin Reifsnyder

Nice place to visit

Karen Copstead

Really very well done, quite interesting (especially viewed a few days after visiting Gettysburg) ...museum not crowded even on a nice Saturday... a friendly and helpful staff. Lacking in places to sit during a rather long visit.

Brandon Seaton

So very nice exhibits and it's nice to have staffs to provide activity for kids even students too. What's activity. It's worksheets that help students to look for answer in first and second floor. There's nice information on the television! So nice! There's also gift shop and guide book from staffs who will give you! If you are student or teacher, i recommend you to visit this museum! This museum also accepts the discount if you are student.

Frederick Teitelbaum

Learned things I never even thought of.

Keith Peterson

History and facts.....

Emily Morgan

So much history in such a small place. Only took an hour and an half to see everything. Personally I would have stayed longer to read more, but my husband who isnt big on museum was ready to go after an hour. Handicap accessible, public parking garage right behind it. Also very close walking distance to the park and shops in the area.

Jennifer Farrell

Cool place but not as much as i expected.

Daniel Ducharme

A good museum as museums go. It cost a bit more than expected given the size, and the exhibits seemed a little dusty and dated. However, my wife and I live in DC and have access to world-class free museums whenever we want. So we are spoiled. We did like the focus it had on dispelling the myths of Civil War surgery, and the actual appendages on loan from a university really made the theory pop into real life.

Michael Phipps

Great place to visit, unbelievable historical memorial

Amanda Holk

Very unique museum experience. It was the perfect size as I get pretty bored after there is too much at a museum. I learned a lot and found it really interesting.

Tonya Hoffman

Authentic tools and gear from the Civil war. Background stories on nurses , doctors, and survivors is very interesting. I highly recommend this stop if you tour Frederick

Linda Tanner-Freitag

Very nice!

Kim Boisvert

You dont know until you come here

John Carrico

Amazing history... great to learn the actual practices during the civil war... more advanced than usually thought.

Harry Deitch

If you are a history buff, medical or you want to understand the absolute horror that medicine was this is a must see. But understanding that medicine makes it biggest advances during major conflicts help to us see that some good came of the conflict. There is nothing good about war, but what we learn from it shouldn't be wasted or forgotten. Been 2x and take others as my Fredrick sight seeing with out of town guests.

Taylor Riley

Whole place was awesome. The exibits did a very good job and displaying

A Riggins

Great museum worth the timr

Joshua Juda

Excellent museum! Very friendly and informative staff to guide visitors and answer questions. Interesting history of medicine, treatments, surgery from war injuries. Very different subjects than the average Civil War museum. Plan on spending some time. Very reasonable admission fee also. Interactive displays throughout. Located near many other antiques ships, restaurants and parking. Highly recommended.

Chad Rector

Small museum. Tells an interesting story about how battlefield medicine changed during the war.

Julie S.

Unimposing from the outside, this 2 story museum is beautifully organized, with an excellent diversity of exhibits, following the Civil War medical developments by time and subject matter. They've managed to create displays that engage both children (shorter plaques, hands-on exhibits, guess the answer panels, a scavenger hunt), and adults (longer information, lots of letter excerpts, some pretty unusual and grim photos). The museum is located right in downtown Frederick, with an inexpensive parking garage right behind it, and multiple tea shops, restaurants, vintage/thrift shops, specialty chocolate/toy/comic/gift shops surrounding it. We meant to spend 1 hour in the museum, and instead spent almost 3 hrs without realizing it!!! My kids never even complained! It's that good, lol!

Jon Ruff

Wonderful flow from room to room, great receptionist who gave history a fun an lively environment, my wife was a rescue EMT so she was enthralled with the detail of medical records an triage to help set the model we use today!

mary larraz

Very good and comprehensive!

Christopher Black

Great educational walk through Civil War medicine!

Aracely Figueroa

The guide was really informative. All the museum was very interesting.

William Cooper

Great museum. We learned a lot about what medical personnel had to deal with during the war. Life-size dioramas, artifacts, and great displays in a great layout. This is a great stop to add to the battlefield tours.

P D

My family and I went last week and I was surprised of all of the stuff they had here. My family and I have been to several Civil War museum. And this was by far the most impressive. Definitely a place to go to !

JAMIE Paige

Very interesting and informative! Definitely worth the price.

Mary Jedlicka

Very informative, however, A/C made for a chilly visit. Recommended. Great exhibits allowing for a great visual representation.

google User

been to this museum and there was lots of information on how medicine was back then and how they treated people that were wounded back then

Josh Shermeyer

Was a great museum, interesting facts, pictures, and a spectacular tour guide for the beginning. One of the best museum's I've been to this summer. Would recommend.

Andrew Stinton

Very informative. The docent was incredibly helpful and friendly. This is a true gem to have in Frederick.

Chris Girard

There's a lot of reading involved at each exhibit, and the wax dummies are a bit unsettling. The layout of the place is a bit odd, too. Despite these things, I still enjoyed walking through the museum and ogling at all the 150+ year old artifacts, and it was pretty informative. The gift shop at the end of the tour had some neat stuff, and the staff was very friendly.

Brian Robinson

The staff took the time to make the subject interesting for my kids. There was a scavenger hunt and we all enjoyed it. My kids are 8 and 14.

Larry Nestell

History is always awesome to learn. The artifacts are well displayed.

KJ Lazo

We LOVED this museum! It was so much better than I thought it would be. We loved all the interactive displays, full-sized life-like scenes, sound effects, variety of photos and artifacts, and the enthusiastic, helpful staff.

Lilian Martinez

Very cool little museum! Packed with real interesting items. A must see in Frederick for any history buff!

Samuel Brooks

Really cool and enjoyed it here.

Bill Podszus

Great place to learn a lotvof Civil War trivia.

Clifford Mars

Informative and a nice way to spend some time exploring Frederick. Good for history buffs and people who like museums

Julie Wilburn

Nice. Quiet. Relaxing!

Kimberly Wiggins

Very interesting.

Daryl Crawford

A fantastic gem in Frederick's historic downtown. Great staff, excellently curated displays.

Zac Berry

Exciting and historic, great knowledgeable spot

Christopher Parker

Excellent displays. Use the parking garage it's like 2 dollars!

Dinesh V

The museum reflects how tough the civil war was and how brave doctors and nurses did everything they can to heal the sufferings of soldiers

FERNANDO NEGRON

Great experience one day is not enough

Kristin Dennison

Very, very educational and interesting. Im so glad we found this museum in downtown Frederick. It's a hidden gem. Adults are $9.50 to get in and worth every penny of it. We spent 3 hours in this small museum so dont let the size fool you. They sell really cool souvineers from books to socks to beer. I got some "violet" (flower) flavored candy and its honestly some of the BEST hard candy I've ever had in my 41 years. I would not bring very young children here as there is ALOT of reading and nothing hands-on. Definitely for adults and/or intersted teens. There's a good amount of benches throughout if one needs to rest their legs/feet.

Sam Stern

plan to spend 2 - 3 hours here. be carefull if your squeemish there are some distressing photos. there is a park garage around the corner that is poorly marked. I cmae here on a whim with a date and we enjoyed ourselves except my date found the photos a little much. allot of the linnens looked kinda neew perhaps they were repoductions? still enjoyable but I arrived an hour before close.

JoAnn Gorscak

Very interesting and informative.

Nolan Oliver

Informative, interesting, and presented very well, both in layout of the exhibits and the exhibits themselves. The museum explores the far reaching effects of the medicine at the time, the changes the Civil War brought in medicine, and how that changed the course of both military medicine practices and medicine for the general public. Though not a museum a child will find terribly engaging, adults at least vaguely interested in the subject will enjoy a stop here.

Rebecca Harris

Very interesting!

M He

Educational. Worth the admission cost.

Charles Erwin

Not at all what I expected. Kind of hokey traveling carnival type mini museum. Disappointed.

Ramona Villegas

Wonderful museum and such a

matt reavey

Great place! Them sawbones I tell ya...

Charmae Cottom

This is a very informative and interesting museum with great artifacts. We stopped for something to do and are pleasantly surprised. Very knowledgeable staff, as well. Worth visiting.

Matthew Moczarny

Awesome little Museum and very informative as well. Definitely worth the price. I learned more about the Civil War here in an hour then I did in high school lol (sad story).

anthony romano

Mr Lynnwood gave us a fantastic intro to museum and from there we spent time taking in the various exhibits. We both enjoy history and have visited other civil war sites. This one is on par with them.

Joe McDaniel

Well worth a visit! A lot of progress in medical care occurred because of the Civil War. The exhibits are (intentionally) a bit gruesome, but kids seem to love it.

Kevin Kuhn

It's a great place for anyone in the medical field who likes History and background on what their profession was and how much progress was made

bowen butler

There is a significant amount of history and knowledge to be seen and gained while visiting this museum. There are facts about every teir of the people during the time and what roles they played or didn't play. It shows the development of various civil rights beginning. You are able to see the past and present compaired in a vast area of different areas. The tent in the one picture is, according to one of the staff, the last remaining tent used during the Civil War. There are some semi-graphic images or items that may not be suitable for young children. I would definitely recomend it for anyone intersted in the medical field or interested in gaining/ teaching an appreciation for how much life has changed and what we so quickly take for granted.

Thomas Rivera

Friendly staff and a lot of great displays and exhibits. Well managed and maintained in a limited space. Street parking.

Chelsea Molnar

Very informative and interesting.

Eric Reeser

This historic museum in Frederick Maryland is a must see for those who are interested in the history of medicine in the United states around the civil war time. It offers a great look in to how medical treatment works in the 1850 and in to the future. How the civil war helped in coming up with new ways of doing things and a better understanding of the human body and diseases that attack it. The exhibits are well layed out and very interesting, even if medicine is not your forte. I highly recommend this museum for everyone.

Julie Fleiser

Yes, you will have to pay an admission fee for this one, as it is a private collection, but it is worth every penny.

A A

Very informative, especially the walking tour, he explained to us while inside the museum as well which made our visit even more interesting and interactive!

Will McLearen

Knowledgeable staff wears the costumes of Civil War doctors. I went as part of a school field trip with my daughter. The tour of the museum was very informative and entertaining.

Peter Poma

This was one of the most interesting museums, describing medicine and techniques used during the civil war. Many of the procedures and medicine we have today evolved from the Civil war. Excellent visit and includes a gift shop. Located in the Frederick, Maryland downtown shopping district.

Lin Wall

Some of the information was repeated several times throughout. Overall very well laid out and we learned quite a bit despite having been to a similar museum elsewhere.

W Berzett

Great place to learn about the civil war and the medical issues that all soldiers faced during that period.

John Real

A very cool little museum, very well done by the folks who volunteer.

Carlos Milan

Very interesting, but I must say a little depressing

John Parker

Nice but of history, recommend

Richard Rodriguez

Went here at 4:19 and was denied entry. Website states that the last tour is at 4:15 but does not explicitly state that entry is denied outright. Why even close at 5. Staff was less than understanding and explained "I'm just doing my job man." Will update this if I decide to go back.

Marvin Suther

It was great. The intial guide (who took us upstairs) was a great source of information. The museum was very informative. Highly recommended.

doug d

One of the finest, if not the finest, museums dedicated to this specific part of the civil war. With information spot on. I have been portraying a civil war surgeon from Philadelphia, Dr. John Hill Brinton, M.D., for the last 14 years. This museum does a very good job in relaying all the facts to the public.

peter pinkham

As long as it's medical history and medical practices of the Civil War time that you're interested in, this is a terrific place to go. Among other things, it outlines how the triage system of Battlefield care actually came about, and how the Civil War was where American medical practices really got their foot in the door as far as how to take care of wounded from wartime activities. Not expensive, very historic, well done and worth the trip.

Justin Hopkins

There's a ton of cool stuff packed into this space. The displays are all really well done. Definitely worth the stop, and the price of admission is very reasonable. Learned so much about amputation.

Kristel Crabill

Really informative and interesting

John Maggio

Great place. we did the self guided tour in an hour but you could spend half a day. Learned a lot. Very friendly staff and very clean.

Lisa Shower

Excellent exhibits in a small, hidden gem of a museum.

Sean Hill

Such a cool museum. It's not the largest but every area was so we'll laid out and had a ton of great information. There were some interactive things for kids but probably not the best places for little little kids. There was no else there when I was there so kids could've ran around quite a bit with out disturbing anyone. Speaking of disturbing, you well see some gruesome things. It is about war and people legs and arms being taken off. I happen to like that stuff. I was driving across country and stopped at all sorts of places and this was a great place.

Philip Lyons

A fascinating display on the earliest professional military medical professionals and thier practices.

Donald Spatz

Fascinating exhibits about medicine as well as the Civil War. Highly recomended!

Paula

Very interesting and informative. I particularly enjoyed the pieces of information from the lives of ordinary soldiers.

Devon

You can learn alot about medicine. Everything u see will shock you.

Omar Feliciano

Great visit! Compared to the national museum in DC, I loved it. Just be mindful of the scale in size compared to those big places though. A big plus is also the location in downtown Frederick is really nice. A must see!

Joseph Smith

Excellent museum. Staff is very friendly. Well curated exhibits. Not too big so you'll be able to read the placards for each exhibit without being there all day.

Barb Jaffe

This is a small museum in the middle of a street filled with restaurants and shops. There are two small floors with a few exhibits. We spent about an hour walking through the exhibits of surgical equipment, old-time pharmacy bottles, and mannequins as we learned about civil war medicine. There are a few costumed docents filled with information wandering about on each floor providing information. It was a little pricey $9, but a nice respite from the oppressive heat..

Jenny

Interesting

Nicholas Dingman

Very informative. Dispels many myths of the battlefield and sheds light on the heroes of this war. Not too gorey. Big takeaway is they used some form of anesthesia in 90% of surgery, and almost all surgeons were trained. Def read the text of letters from the time. They're the best part.

Susan Mathers

Well worth the small admission price. My husband is not a fan of museums and he was interested as we moved throughout the building!

Steve Rigoni

Very well organized and educational museum. It is a great destination in Frederick

Thatcher Cardon

Well done. Great guide. Quality exhibits nearly Smithsonian standard.

SC

Very nice and informative. Buy a groupon for it

Jean Hippert

Extremely interesting, well curated collection and well-to-do story of medicine before, during and after the Civil War era. Small museum, definitely worth the visit while in beautiful Frederick.

Eirik Harteis

A human sized exploration of an often over looked topic. This museum opened my eyes to insights about animals and the chances of survival for certain medical procedures. My out of town guests were likewise impressed. Do not look for the latest in the museum experience here however. You will read a lot. My 12 year old nephew enjoyed the scavenger hunt.

Ingrid Hakala

Great information I learned alot

Thomas Sears

This was a great place. Very interesting.

Anderson Jaggernauth

I really enjoyed it, the tour made it better. I would have preferred to have heard more about how blacks were treated when they were captured and what their roles were on both sides.

Joseph NewYork

How do they put so much history in such a small size museum? Just amazing. I've got to stop being disappointed by the endless ways man has invented to kill each other. This history is so important.

Katelyn Bennett

Really cool! Interactive and affordable!

Matt Ruck

Very nice staff and exhibits are well done. Recommend!

Patrick Brooks

Very cool museum. I learned a lot about Civil War Medicine. Admission price was a little high for what you get though.

Greg Rice

Kind of gruesome, but the civil war was also brutal.

Tarun Johns

Excellent displays and very informative. A worthwhile stop.

Brian O'Donnell

A great place to visit

Tahira A

Great presentation before actually walking through the museum. Overall a very interesting and informational museum.

John Phillips

Nice clean place, very educational, learned lots of neat things, lots of interesting artifacts , may not be suited for small kids

Barbara Plume

Well worth visiting! Very interesting exhibits; we all learned a lot about medicines and surgical practices used in that time. A very nice museum.

Robert Tippery

Fascinating and the docents were amazing

Victoria Davidson

I had to visit a historical location for a history project. I'm a nurse so this location was perfect. I learned so much and the fun layout and design of the area is amazing. There is so much to see and read. They made learning about medicine in the civil war exciting. They also give you a nice little guide to help get you through each section. I recommend for all ages!!

isabel Walker

Pretty good food, though it used to be a lot better in the past. In the last few months the food has seemed to have gone down hill, smaller portions and tastes worse. My previously favorite dish, the thai green curry, has gotten a lot smaller, watterier, and sweeter for example. still pretty good, but not great either.

Morgan

Great little museum with lots of interesting information. I especially enjoyed the quotes from primary sources. They did a great job of illustrating the way the medical community responded on the fly to the new clinical and logistical challenges posed by the civil war.

Kathleen Chochol

This is an incredible collection. The curator and staff invested a lot of time and patience to do justice to the significance of each piece on display. The background audio adds an additional layer of richness to the experience. This is not merely informational. You cannot help but walk away knowing so much more than you ever expected. The details of the life-sized diaramas pull you into the time and place of each setting. Any visit to one of the many local battlefields should be followed up with a visit here. Only then can the mind come closest to a more complete understanding of this important time in our nation's past.

Bethany Bond

I love the store front window, I have always wanted to go in because it looks interesting, I calles to find out the ticket price, which i thought was reasonable, and the woman on the phine spent alot of time telling me about everything I need to know, even how long it takes to walk through. I am planning on going. Just trying to find the right group of friends that would like that subject matter.. Looks cool

Fastidious Lady

Wonderful museum for the ugly side of war. Exhibits tastefully displayed to demonstrate what it truly was like on a battlefield for all age groups and understanding.

Jasmyn Davis

Historians on duty were so knowledgeable

Jennifer Butler

Informative and somber. The dioramas and displays with detailed explanations bring the horrors of the Civil War to life while also celebrating those who dedicated themselves to saving lives.

LISA HOF

As a nurse, I am intrigued at the practice of medicine and surgery in the past. The docents are knowledgeable and enthusiastic.

Brett Skipper

Really cool unusual museum in the heart of historic Fredrick. Does a great job of detailing the fascinating history of the medical care during the civil war. They exhibits are informative and highly artistic!

Christopher Jacobson

Very cool exhibits and extremely friendly staff. Small enough so you can take your time and still only spend a few hours here.

Jim Chapman

Very good educational

Carole McCorry

Thank you Dr John. The tour was a fabulous review of the best of medical care during the height of the civil war.

Phil Czajkowski

Go there and learn some history.

Ruthan Proctor

Wonderful look into Civil War medicine.

Sue Knits

Very interesting museum. Not as gory as I'd (hoped) expected, my partner only had to avert her eyes once. I loved the huge exhibit on nursing and hospital design. Glad to have my preconceptions challenged. I liked learning about changing theories of disease and seeing all the antiques. Wish there had been more variety of T-shirts but found some sassy bookmarks in the gift store. Knowledgeable staff; go on a living history day if you can. And stop at the visitors center for a BOGO free coupon.

K. Glasgow

Smaller than I thought it would be, nice gift shop though.

Scott Campo

Very informative exhibits and insightful docents. We managed to spend an entire afternoon here.

Mike Levine

Very interesting! I love the mix of factual history and personal accounts of civil war medicine

The Chad

Awsome place. The staff are very helpful and a wealth of historic info.

Bob Hartman

Quirky but interesting museum in Frederick right in the very walkable downtown area. They also offer a military discount, which is always appreciated.

Patricia Wassall

This is a great museum. It is kind of pricey, but the information presented is good and the artifacts are abundant. I would recommend this, but only to people really interested in the subject matter.

Calum N. Dingwall

There was a lot of information.
