Nice, relaxing, beautiful and historic.

Fabulous tour. We were fortunate enough to get a private tour. The tour includes the original meeting house and the ladies home. The history is wildly interesting. At the time of this writing, there were only 2 living Shakers left in the world . . . and they are both here. This is unfortunately where the Shakers will official pass into history.

Totally not worth $7.00, I couldn't take the walking tour (7.00) as it was another 40 minutes before it started. I opted for the museum. It was one room divided up. Had VERY few artifacts and some pictures. Took me less 10 minutes (and only that because I read EVERY paragraph by EVERY photo). Store is uninteresting. Without the walking tour not allowed to even walk down the street. Don't know about the walking tour but the museum was NOT worth the money OR the drive.

Sabbathday Lake offers an authentic look into the last active Shaker community in the world. The Shakers are a fascinating denomination. There is lots to be learned about the Shaker way of life and history here. We took the tour and our guide Don was informative and friendly. It was great to see some of the actual work and living spaces that The Shakers once used. I was blown away by the blue paint used in the meeting house. It was apparently made from a mixture which used blueberries as the color. I can’t remember the exact date, but I’m pretty sure it was applied over 200 years ago! It still looked great, Benjamin Moore should try tapping into that formula.

This is the last active shaker community, with at present 3 shakers. We had a tour of some of the buildings with a friendly and informative guide, learning about the shaker history and way of life. The small village has a beautiful setting with gorgeous views that we enjoyed in the sunshine, especially the very lovely highland cattle!

Zion's Center of Union, Sabbathday Lake is God's Chosen place. Only the wise and discerning eye can comprehend the hidden Eternal Glory within these 1800 acres. Take God out and its still a plausible effort at communal living. A must see experience and a good fair ticket price to learn some American history if you don't value the God factor. However, if you are a true and discerning Christian, you will meet your Maker here...in peace. Enjoy your tour.

Pretty interesting to learn about the Shakers. I've been to other Shaker villages and this one is not quite as representative of daily Shaker life as those.

susan scarbrough

Such an experience learning about the history of the Shakers in such a beautiful setting

Mina Christina Staples

Great working Quaker farm. General store & farm is great. Working and living farm. The lot of folks who work here also live here. Few travel from outside, but small and cozy. A must for families looking for summer fun/education. Guided tours. Relatively cheap day out.

Loved learning about Shaker history.

Brendan O'Brien

It was fun to visit on their festival day. I'm not sure what else there is to do here but the crafts and demonstrations made the visit from Portland worthwhile.

Janine Valliere

Very interesting only two Shaker remain.

Bruce Jones

Surely worth a visit. A good look at into how our people lived thru the years

M Lapson

It's beautiful and informative for sure. The goods they sell are lovely and some are truly unique. However the signage is lacking so that one isn't sure where to go or what parts are available to see free or that you pay and what type of tours are best for your party. Without explanations of the types of tours it's hard to know what to purchase and the price seems high for a quick peek around a self guided room. A map would be very useful!! Also there were workshops taking place but with no indication of wether they were open to the public, part of the tours or not. Still, a gorgeous setting in beautiful Maine!

Shaker Village. Beautiful 225 year old buildings located in original religious colony. Won't go into Shaker beliefs and traditions here. You can Google them yourselves. Beautiful country setting, heirloom plants, herb mixes, heritage cookbooks, jams and souvenirs for sale. Tours are $10 for adults. Includes all buildings, museum and Shaker burial ground.

Alan Pease

Very nice off the beaten path place to visit. Relaxing

Joseph Ovady

Living history, need I say more.

Delsa White

Love this place. Worked with other volunteers and garden staff to prepare harvested Egyptian mint. This was fun and we have enrolled as Friends of the Shakers. A worthy cause.

Une découverte ! Le seul village shaker encore en activité...

Toast2936

The directed tour is about an hour or so long and it includes 2 buildings. It is an intresting look at life in this religious community famous for a style of furniture. There are also some additional buildings with more self directed exhibits.

Short, but interesting tour of two buildings with period furniture and much info on the cottage industries that were once performed there. I was curious about the remainder of the antique buildings, but they are closed to clambering tourists.
