REVIEWS OF New Orleans Jazz Museum IN Louisiana

Stephen Moralez

Pretty rad spot! Right in the middle of the Mint building, you kinda get to double dip into history for only 6 bucks. We went on a day Herlin Riley was playing, and it was fantastic. Love all the amazing displays they have preserved, including Louis Armstrong's first coronet and the original modern drum kit as we know it. The section on Louis Prima was rad.

Dawn Elliot

Seeing this "band" on our first day was such a warm welcome to NOLA. Totally worth seeing... go to the concert if you can and the plan to stay at least another hr or so to take your time taking in all there is to see AND DO... loved this museum. Wish we had spent more time there

Sofi Butskhrikidze

Absolutely amazing place! Very informative and colorful. It's not too big, but still a lot to see

Dwayne Liddell

Very nice venue and lots of history packed into the space. We lucked up and got into Free afternoon concert. I would absolutely recommend this place and it doesn't take long to visit. Mint museum was a nice throw in to the place since it was the old mint.

Walter Askew

Very nice,will return

Ainmhithe

Really great exhibits the are very informative. Clean and well air conditioned. Worth it. And if you come during the Creole Tomato Festival, it's free entrance.

Dan Bess

The US Mint display was far better than the few rooms with Jazz history. Not worth the money.

Eve Aus

Not an exhibition befitting the history of this place with respect to jazz. Air conditioned and cheap entry price, however.

Maranda Parker

We enjoyed the museum , was definitely worth the few bucks it cost for tickets ! Definitely a place to see in New Orleans!

Calvin Brown

Lots of information about the music I love.

Tim Ennis

Always interesting exhibitions and displays; nicely put together on great subjects. Third-floor concert space has superb acoustics and audio engineers.

David Koester

Don't miss this place on your next trip to NOLA. Fantastic musical history that I don't think you can find anywhere else. Free concert Tues-Fri. at 2:00. Best value in town.

Ray Dunklin

Nice place to visit if you want to learn about jazz and how it evolved over the years. Going to the Satchmo festival will allow you to hear different types of jazz and get better insights about jazz. It has a place where kids can make different instruments and do different activities.

Anita L. Hooker

$8 per person. It was okay. Just thought it would be more. They do have senior and children rates.

Renita Swedberg

Lots of details about certain people in the jazz world, as well as an overview of the history of jazz.

Latrina Boulds

History at its best. good learning for me and the children.

Greg Avakian

Great exhibits and they are the landing zone for the Summer Satchmo Fest -a worthy experience for anyfan of Louis Armstrong and of course anyone who just likes Jazz and wants to learn about its history and roots. If you love Louis Armstrong, don't miss Satchmo fest! The daytime lectures are often fascinating journeys into the life of Louis Armstrong and the people who influenced him and who he influenced. Don't miss out on lectures by Ricky riccardi who always does several presentations lots of video from the Louis Armstrong house in NYC. Seriously: NOT to be missed!

C Gavin Alford

Met the curator who is not only knowledgeable but a local with real class and character. Sadly I am not that good with names, but a real nice lady.

H J

The day we visited happens to be Satchmo summerfest. So I am not sure how typical this review will be. The day was fantastic, with music, food, exhibits and activities galore. The food on offer was excellent and inexpensive. I had the best fried chicken I had ever tasted! The kids had a great time doing the activities and listening to the varied music. We left with such good memories from a wonderful day out. Recommended.

Leona Finberg

A lot of history enjoyed it

Fj Ness

My wife and I loved visiting. They have many interactive music exhibits and a room dedicated to the old mint.

Pamela Jo Anderson

New Orleans was super awesome. So much to see & do. It was a beautiful day besides.

Nicolas Bussière

Learned a lot !!

Leann Harms

Definitely worth the visit. Great insight into the musical history of New Orleans.

Ann Marie Potter

This was a great museum. Four stars because I really wanted more

Maris Cockrell

Definitely worth a walk through if your on that end of the quarter. As a bonus, it's air-conditioned and has clean bathrooms.

Richard Crowe

Excellent concert at 2 pm. Very informative.

Veronica Z

An underappreciated gem of a museum. Their display subjects range from historic technological objects (actual minting equipment) to instruments and other items related to music history, to visual artworks like photographs, painting, and costumes. I think there's something for everyone and everything is specific to New Orleanian and Louisianian culture and history.

John Oliver III

Recorded with artist Lady A here. Exceptional room and acoustics. Did not get to walk around the entire museum, but what I saw makes me wish I had more time to enjoy all of the art and history of this historic place.

Ingrid Blackwell

Always some new to learn when you visit.

Fred Domke

It was a triple treat - a mint museum, a jazz museum, and we saw a wonderful performance by a Brazilian jazz band.

Joe Bevins

This place details a lot of history, the price is right and definitely worth the visit

Jim Smith

Fun place to be

Howard Romaine

Prof Long Hair Exhibit at Old Mint a great exhibit in quiet. elegant space at end of Esplanade near the French Market!!!Dont miss it, the story of early creations, decline and comeback in later years!!!

Gail Smith

Cool place! History!

Sebastian york

I am always honored to be their IT sponsor

Carena Hoeppner

I love music, and here you can see and hear a lot of jazz, my daughter love it too. Even if its small, the place have a lot to give.

Chandra Franklin

Loved the history!!

Olivia

I visited during the Satchmo fest! Great turnout for the heat! Lots of tourists

Julie Somerville

Great place to have a wedding

Kayden Macey

Pretty sweet museum. I really enjoyed all the examples and history of New Orleans jazz, but there could've been a lot more on later eras of jazz. Specifically, jazz from the 50s and onward. Pleasant experience, recommended

Martin McMann

Really nice place to visit when your down in the French Quarters area

Chasity Sanders

The museum appeared in great condition. The temperature within was comfortable, security and plenty of staff upon walking in. It costed us $6.00 each to enter. The exhibits were appealing and filled with knowledge and stories, although small. I truly enjoyed reading about the times surrounded by jazz and the important contributions women made towards increasing the popularity of jazz. If you are a music lover, this is a spot to visit.

diana barajas

My kids love music so this was amazing for them!!

Oscar Fonseca

The museum is well preserved, the building is nice and the staff is friendly. However, the collection is not very large, and there is no suggested path to follow the museum, as each room displays isolated topics.

janeal kitchens

It was very good. They need more exhibits

Ildiko Nagy

Very small place but it worth the visit. I recommend to read all the descriptions for the displayed items.

Pavel Hardak

Nice, but pretty small museum. I expected much more given the huge history of jazz in New Orleans. But for six dollars per person, it was OK. They definitely need to bring new technology to this place, can be improved in many ways.

Amanda Konsavage

Was interesting. They have live music everyday, which was cool to sit and listen to. Alot of various New Orleans stuff, not necessarily just jazz related.

Rosario Aguayo

Very informative and interesting. Truly enjoyed it all.

Vanessa Williams

I went for an intimate afternoon jazz concert by the lively Vivacity band. The photography exhibit is simply stunning. Check out the afternoon concerts for an authentic, high-quality and affordable jazz experience in NOLA.

Simone Marta

Small, felt like it was missing more memories. Only one piece of Louis Armstrong.

Deborah Wilson

Loved this place very informative

Laurel Bergdahl

Wonderful. A must see

Denise Pye

Very informative and look nice

Mary-Allison Gray

Large place with informative and somewhat interactive sites. Be ready to climb stairs.

Erich Dix

Wonderful museum. Really interesting and tasteful exhibits on Jazz and the mint. The mural is very beautiful. I think this is the best of the Louisiana state museums in New Orleans.

Jiacheng Yang

The jazz exhibition is just some randomly collected themes about a few local stars. It is by no means a comprehensive history of Jazz. You would be disappointed if you want to come to learn about jazz. Gave it two stars because this site was once a US mint. The exhibition about the mint is more interesting than the jazz part.

PolandballOfSpace

Very nice place. Admission is free and features things ranging from old minting equipment to artwork. I would highly recommend if you are nearby! You can also take the trolley here from the French Market which is nice.

Dover House

885000 people can't be wrong. What a great time

Isabel Franco Baraçal

It is a small museum. It has a great collection of famous jazz players photographs. The jazz show on the third floor was a nice surprise. The concert room was really nice and the band was very good. It has place to seat comfortably while enjoying the good music!

Drake Doumit

There's a lot of content in this museum for just 8$. If you are interested in Jazz Fest history or classic New Orleans Jazz artists, it's worth checking out for an hour or two!

EK Hutch

I agree with the reviews that feel the amount of content is lacking. Barely worth six dollars. A great jazz city like New Orleans does deserve better. Very little Dr. John or Neville Brothers? Come on....

Lady D

"Me Got Fiyo: The Professor Longhair Centennial" is a thorough and fascinating look at Fess' life.

Freddie Colombani

Incredible place. A time travel thru the sounds of Jazz. Louis Armstrong trumpet is there and Fat Dominoes piano too. Located in the French Quarter. Must see. Value exhibit same building which houses the rich musical history was formerly the US Mint building . Morgan's Silver Dollars were produce here from silver rounds. Nice seeing so much history in one building

M G

For jazz history lovers

Lavon

Learned so much I didn't know and was fortunate enough to attend a free jazz concert!

Lyndia Talley

Pretty small but a nice place to get cool and check out some jazz legions.

Amber Scruton

Loved the exhibits about Pete Fountain and women in jazz. Smaller than I expected it would be - I wonder if it would be possible in the future to have an entire museum dedicated to this great art form? It should have a permanent exhibit about the history of jazz as well as these temporary exhibits. Was pleased to see the NPS shop there, though. Would definitely recommend, especially for the low price.

Ethan Berry

A bit small but the music is great

Earl Manley

Disappointing jazz museum, the old federal mint on the lower floor ,was the highlight .

Dawn Cormier

Very educational and wonderful staff.

Mark Allen

Good for the jazz but not the mint museum

Julia Young

Great place to visit if you're interested in the history of jazz.

Dominique Ferguson

This visit is a must for anyone who is interested in the history of New Orleans. There are three levels to this Museum. The first level is the Mew s Mint Museum. The second and third levels had lots of paintings and musical memorabilia and Exhibits about New Orleans jazz artists. I learned so much about the history of jazz and music in New Orleans. Things that no one had ever revealed to me. I left the museum feeling so much more enlightened about the city and the people and the culture of New Orleans. This Museum was my very first stop and I'm so glad that it was because everything else that I saw and heard in the city made so much more sense to me because I had a background from the museum. On the day I visited there was also a jazz concert on the third level. It was superb!

Christina Y

This was neat to see. The first floor is the US Mint and the second floor is all jazz history. A smaller museum, but was cool to see original instruments and listen to some recordings. Catch the live jazz performance on the third floor if you can, the musicians are great and it was a perfect way to end the museum visit!

Calvin Crawford

The food was pricey. The service was excellent. The drinks were "soft." Honestly, I had a better time with the guys selling brews and bbq a block over from bourbon street.

Johnny Mckinney

Awesome museum & live music venue.

Amina Lee

So much information to share. Great lectures too.

Donald Lewis

Excellent historical experience.

Nichelle M. Bush

A historic MUST See!!

Ronni Brant

Very fun and educational

samantha

Lot of info and really neat to visit!

Kimberly Hunt

A really cool place to see history and jazz!! Love the layout1

Champagne Minx

Unfortunately, there really isn't much to see yet. My daughter and I are avid Jazz fans, so hopefully in the coming years they will have more to add.

John Malm

Very good, even a small concert!

Denise Washington

Interesting experience

Maureen Compton

So much fun!

Alex Mirov

Housed in the Old US Mint, this is an ever-changing collection about the development of New Orleans jazz and its influence around the world. There's daily music lectures as well, discussing various aspects of jazz by performers and academics, and those are included in the price of admission, as is the ability to tour the mint itself. A fascinating museum, but very loud, rather small, and the audio from the lectures and programmes can easily be overwhelming. Get a discounted ticket by buying it in advance with a ticket to another LA State Museum.

Peter Rathfelder

well worth the price and time. Al Hurt postet.

P Sea

It was a wonderful afternoon of Jazz History

Andrea K

Very interesting museum. Full of fun facts. Fats Dominio's piano is in there

Charlotte Secrist

There were a lot of cool exhibits that showcased musicians, styles, and historic events, especially in the rooms upstairs. I learned a lot and I loved listening to the jazz. However, I think they could do a lot to spruce things up. It's an old building and it's easy to get bored quickly. I would have liked a few more interactive exhibits, but I still enjoyed the experience.

Samantha Mishler

Super interesting local and nation wide jazz history. Learned a lot I didn't know and expanded my playlists with artist I didn't know existed. It's in an old US mint so it's really like a 2 for 1 deal since the first floor is mint history.

Megumi Tan

Was hoping to see more of the history of jazz. The free concert was amazing!

Richard Carapezza

Super cool. Whent when I was at Satchmo fest with my nephew's everyone had a great time.

Jeff Uddin

Enjoyed what we were able to see, currently preparing three other exhibits so variety was limited.

Kirsta Bowman

Louis Armstrongs original trumpet is here. A must see for any jazz fan

Marjorie Pokorny

I love listening to older jazz and seeing instruments that belonged to the artists, but my favorite area was devoted to the NOLA Indians. I had just been trying to describe their costumes to my granddaughter...and there they were. Don't miss this museum, if you love music.

timothy baird

Good times

Randy Tusha

True story, we went to the National Historical Jazz Museum and paid to park in the designated parking for 2 hours. We were there 1 hr 50 minutes and we were given a parking ticket. I called the number on the ticket and explained I still had time on my meter and the woman refused to send a supervisor to cancel the ticket. She said I had to go fight it in court at City Hall, so I drove straight there, proved I had paid, testified before an officer of the court on a recording (he swore me in and everything). When I explained what happened he dismissed the ticket. New Orleans parking enforcement is driving people away from the city. I will not be going back to downtown again. They don't want my business, so I will go places that care to have me there.

Moti Leist

Small but nice exebishen

Rebecca Oxley

Take your time going through this museum. You might find some surprises in the exhibits. Well worth it.

Bob Hedgcock

Awesome music and museum.

Ahmad Kazi

The New Orleans Jazz Museum is thoughtful in its layout and is a necessary addition to New Orleans History. The Building is beautiful and within walking distance of other major attractions in the French Quarter area. The layout of the exhibits is excellent and guides the patrons though many important figures in American music history. I really enjoyed the live jazz show in the performance venue on the third floor. It was long enough to hear good jazz, but short enough that I wanted to come back for more. Overall I can't wait to see what additional programming will be made in the museum.

Paul Swithers

Nicely curated exhibits. Small but time well spent.

Jean Charles

So much goodness here.

Rita Lott

Really enjoyed the museum, learned a lot about New Orleans jazz history

daryl miller

A hidden gem that houses Louis Armstrong first trumpet. Great educational exhibit with musical clips and videos. Houses in the former US Mint.

mohamed ouarrak

It is really an embarrassment to the state of Louisiana and the City of New Orleans to leave this museum in the way it is now. Most of the exhibition were closed and the open one has nothing to offer, except of some pictures and couple instruments. It was a disappointment to me and my family visiting this museum. What the museum offering is almost close to nothing compare to the rich history of Jazz. I think the City of New Orleans should invest little bit more on this museum other wise it's a shame to ignore such a beautiful part of the city culture and the amazing music.

Somnus Doctorow

Fascinating history. Live jazz performance for just any amount donation excellent.

christopher trochez

Great and quaint venue. Went there for a concert and the place was fantastic. Didn't get a chance to see much of the venue itself as the event was in the evening but the space for the convert was first class with great acoustics.

Brenda L Jackson

Very educational.

Diogo Amaro

Tiny collection that succeeds in having you visit for 45 minutes without learning anything about the history of jazz

Denise Kellar

Loved it! Cool vintage instruments here from many of the greats. Plus it's all housed inside the former US Mint!! A bonus to see both.

Stevie Barajas

You have to visit this museum it's so iconic and so much history here!!! If you love jazz, it's right next to Frenchman's street and a very low cost to enter here 6.00 (plus tax) I was so happy I got to enjoy this history and learn so much about jazz and culture!!

Adeline Pang

wonderful museum. well air conditioned and the jazz exhibition had some interactive bits where we could learn how to swing dance. pretty fun!

Heather Dawson

This is definitely a part of the city that you should make time to go check out, particularly if you love Jazz.

Antony Vo

Thanks Relix for miracling me to the sold out International Jazz Day show here!

Jordan Boulton

Free to get into and it is actually pretty cool if you're looking for something free to do! It's great if you're there during the summer time because it's air conditioned so you can step out of the heat and look at some really cool history!

Marty Hughes

Great place don't miss the 2 PM show.

Nawlinz Creole

#1 it is free. You get to take a self guided tour which is better in my opinion. The plaques tell the stories for you. There is art, instruments from the greats, and old printing machines for money. Plus it is haunted.

John Hsieh

A quaint museum just upstream of the center of French Quarters. So glad I got a chance to visit. You essentially get two museum for the price of one. On the first floor, there are artifacts on display for the old mint. The second floor is the where the jazz museum and concert hall is located. Although the jazz museum has limited space, it seems to have rotating exhibits. It's worth it to revisit as a jazz fan and try to see a bit of history on the birthplace of jazz.

Lydia Harto

Very nice

Wendy Lumbert

Great place to visit while in NOLA. They also have free concerts on certain days. Check their website to see who is performing.

Karthik Mahalingam

Has the US mint and jazz exhihits. An interesting folio on Drumsville and Prof. longhorn. But was expecting so much more! Was disappointed to not see any references made to some of the Jazz greats like Duke Ellington, Thelonius Monk, Count Basie, etc. Or to the NOLA Jazz Festival history etc. Would have loved to see this stuff. Not sure what the categorisation was intended to be, but didn't feel like the tickets was worth it.

Andrew Sheehan

This is a very nice place to visit! They’ll at times have events set up outside as well. I recommend stopping by here if you’re touring New Orleans or if you live here and are looking for something to do!

Shaney Mc Poland

So much history- fun museum

Homeagain 95

We visited New Orleans for several days but we did not visit the Jazz Museum while we were there. Maybe we visited a location close to the museum because it keeps popping up on my maps asking for a review. I tried saying I have not been here several times, but it keeps popping up anyway. We enjoyed the places we visited in New Orleans.

Raza Ali

Nice place to catch up on some jazz history and watch some cool cats perform in this building!

Charles Buchanan

Not big but some great features. Louis Armstrong's first cornet on display. Great room dedicated to drumming in New Orleans history. A whole room dedicated to Prof Longhair.. fascinating. Also interesting venue in the Old Mint building with exhibition. Only $6 for a real piece of jazz and NOLA history.

Babette Ory

My Dad Kid Ory is one of New Orleans Jazz founding gathers

Sherree Myers

Great museum. You get a little history of the New Orleans mint as well as the jazz museum. Well worth the $12 and an hour or two.

Jacob Bodden

There is no mention of Louis Armstrong (other than his trumpet) or other early jazz greats. Complete disappointment.

Phyllis Murphy

Small, quaint, 2 hour max, but simply and effectively done. $6 adult admission, bathrooms, air conditioned.

Mark Heisel

A learning experience. I am not a jazz person by any means, but respect it very much. Worth stopping here to experience and learn about jazz history.

Carol Zastrow

If you're in New Orleans, you have to learn about jazz.

Beau Patterson

Good place to catch some sounds

Mark Bolling

Such a cool place. It's now a museum for art exhibits, and it has some of the most amazing New Orleans art history type stuff. This was one of my favorite places. Free to visit, and you can see and learn so much!!

Brooke Sachs

I was looking for a way to learn about the history of jazz in this city. Being a place rich with music history, I was sorely disappointed by the exhibits. Even the old Mint part of the museum was not particularly informative. It’s a real shame that this beautiful space isn’t used for dissemination of more information, history and passion for this place. Save yourself some time and read up on jazz online.

Fredanthony Garza

Really well curated. The building is magical.

Brian O'Connell

Only has a small exhibit on the mint in New Orleans. Was interesting to see some of the country that were minted at the location.

Island Traveler Ly

Great place to visit if you're interested in the history of jazz.

Erik Rodrigues

Cool little museum to soak up a little local culture and learn about the roots of blues and rock. Jazz started it all.

John Bemis

Great addition to the quarter. The old mint building has been turned into a museum full of artifacts from jazz history and present. It is now operated by the national parks and so entry fees are very low. They coordinate regular live music events which are free or nearly so to the public.

Karren Hill

Wonderful history lesson and great tunes!!

Boris Suarez

Great place. We also had the pleasure of listening a live band while we were there.

Sheila Thomason

When in NOLA be sure to check out the Jazz museum and old mint. The third floor of the museum features a music Hall with incredible acoustics. (Look for shows there!) The 2nd floor has exhibits of Jazz greats as well as Madrid Gras Indians elaborate outfits.

Devon Steven

Small but a must visit for jazz fans. Try and catch a live show if you can.

Nancy Tunell

I enjoyed the interactive exhibits and makes you think about NOLA differently!

Anthony Pereira

Good, a must see place !

Sandra Oz

It didn't have a whole lot. Small exhibits. It's not a central location for all the jazz artists out there. However, the best part was the question and answers from their guest artists.

ur mum

This jazz museum was pretty alright. The temperature thought the building was very odd, constantly having to take on and off my jacket. The actual exhibits were pretty cool. But the place had an overall kind of weird vibe to it. Plus some of the audio listening machines were very odd and not even working sometimes. Could be improvements.

Bobbie Hughes

Lobby is deceiving. Rooms are very very small. A lot of cosmetic issues. Toilet seat crooked. Shower slimmy the first night. Didn't receive hand or wash towels for 3 days. One of two Elevators (the size of a refrigerator) broken. Service elevator broken. Couldn't get extended checkout. No soap or paper towels in handicap bathroom. The worst experience ever.

Ali Dimashkieh

It can barely be called museum, and I wouldn’t recommend changing your plans to go there, but if it happened, you will enjoy it.

Ella Xu

Love this place and its appreciation for music. If you, as a musician, ever feel unappreciated this is a great place to visit! The staff are also fairly kind and the environment is very calming.

Ellen Ray

Small and mighty! Most of the exhibits related to jazz are on the second floor (the first for has an exhibit in the old mint and had a great exhibit on jazz funeral secondlines and protests while we were there). While there were just a few exhibit rooms, they packed a punch and for an incredibly reasonable price. We stopped and spent a couple hours, when we thought it would be a short visit. There was an exhibit on Black Indian Masking Suiting that was fantastic. There was also a great exhibit based on the relatively newly released box set "Goodbye, Babylon," a collection of holy ruckus. Totally worth it. It's mixed media, includes music, visual and word, and forges partnerships that keeps the exhibits timely and relevant.

Andrew Jordan

The museum itself is just ok, but they had some live music that was fantastic.
