REVIEWS OF Destrehan Plantation IN Louisiana

Gino and Tracy Chies

My husband and I were lucky enough to have the lovely Miss Evelyn for our tour guide. She was dressed in period costume and had the "southern sway" down perfectly. She was a wonderful tour guide, we were fortunate enough to have her all to ourselves. She was very well informed and truly entertaining. We both enjoyed our trip the the Destrehan Plantation very much. Highly recommended.

amber Skaggs

Very interesting, the tour guide was absolutely in love with history, the people and the stories. She was fantastic and so great at giving us all the bits and pieces of the plantation. It's a smaller one but gorgeous as well as a great gift shope!! Everyone was very friendly and helpful

Susan Wettergren

Really enjoyed our guide Emma she was very informative. She was also kind to my granddaughter when she tried go answer and or ask questions. I would also like to say thank you to the group we walked through with. They were also kind to the kids aka. Young scholars. My granddaughter got a bloody nose when we were in the clothing and history building. She was very sweet and helpful considering she moved a table sk that we could get to the bathroom quickly.

Terry E Schmidt

Jim showing the plantation was extremely knowledgeable about the plantation and time period. Highly recommend.

Jason Deeter

Very nice plantation with lots of history. Very knowledgeable tour guide with a ton to see.

Claire Patrick

Beverly's tour was fantastic! Well worth the admission.

Philip Glover

Nice place not a lot to it but good to see

G M

Excellent heritage site

Gareth Latcham

The demonstrations after the tour was better than the house tour

Robert Grace

There is a lot of history there, the Louisiana Purchase and the slave rebellion. The story of sugar cane and the Civil War all come together.

Mary Michelet

A little muddy for the annual fair but still amazing as always. I think they should have had more hay on the ground as it was hard to navigate through all the puddles and muck. The property was gorgeous as always and the house tour guides were so informative. (My family and I take the tour every year). It was a shame to see some new houses being built right next to the property, as it takes away from the home and all it's glory.

Trey Diaz

The guided tours are great and very informative. You don't get the level of personal interaction with the guides like at Destrehan many places anymore it seems. The property is beautiful and well kept for being over 200 years old. If you are in the area and are interested in the history of the South it is a great stop.

SHANE TEBBIT

Informative tour and the building itself is awesome!!!

Dave Brown

Loved it and would recommend it to everyone

Glenn Green

Great tour of a Sugar Mill Plantation. The history and how this home was built was astonishing considering the era it was built. Recommend, the tour guide I believe was Jim so informative and totally enjoyed what he was doing.

Annissia Delley

Great tour, very educational. Beautiful trees, great place to take the kids for a look in history.

Dean Pace

Very good tour. Tons of information and our guide Beverly was excellent! Personable, fun, very knowledgeable. Had a great time

Adrian Otto

Best historic tour of a plantation. Very nice and knowledgeable tour guide. Would recommend!

Angela Matherne

ONE WORD AWESOME, WE HAD 6BUSES AND 120 STUDENTS AND PARENTS, GREAT DAY!!!

Paul Byler

Interesting place to visit. Tour guide is engaging and makes a visit here a positive experience.

Mike Borisenko

Our tour guide Beverly was great! Super friendly, and very fun. Be sure to stop by and see the fashion demonstration.

JOHANNA LUCAS

Outstanding tour at $ 17 each ! We were quoted $ 91 for a similar tour ! Most informative and guides in period costume. Avoid the touristy other plantations...this is owned and run by the local historical society so ALL monies go back into the museum! Fantastic

Jessica Naquin

Love the true history and artifacts

Christie Pepper

Beautiful grounds, the demonstrations and knowledge from the guides are great. Typical plantation entrance fee, but worth the trip.

Manue

We could sense that the guide (well dressed up in a historical costume) had a lot of knowledge but he was not doing it the right way. He talked way to fast, the details were too technical and he forgot that we did not know the people he was talking about so we were lost. Also all the changes that were made in the building itself reduced the charm of the plantation too much. It looked too new and too modern

J & B Boelkins

This was a 15-20 minute drive from where we stayed in NOLA. It was an excellent example of how folks lived in southern LA during the late 1700s to late 1800s -- raising a sugar crop (after indigo proved to be unproductive). The residence tour was guided and very informative. The outlying buildings gave lots of information on the history of the workers' life and jobs.

Joshua Ludy

What an awesome property. The tour guides wear era correct clothing and have a great insight to the way things were ran when the plantation was active. They also do a “how it’s made” exhibit with people showing you how a lot of the building materials were made back in that time frame. Worth the drive from NOLA

Bryn Johnson

Very nice tour. Informative. Fairly small grounds but well maintained. The main house is very nice.

Amanda Meeks

This was one of the best historical tours we've done. There is a lot of rich history about the area that revolves around the house and property. The tour is worth the price. They have a little scavenger hunt paper for the kids to help keep them interested during the tour, which my kids enjoyed. Also lots of fun and unique gift items in the gift shop. It was probably one of our favorite outings this trip so far.

ipsita kumar

It's a nice spot. We actually landed here since we go lost. There are some other places which are much nicer for the same cost. But this one is pretty close to New Orleans and takes lesser time

Karen Plybon

Such beautiful Cypress trees surrounding the plantation.

Paula Blackman

Loved this place!! This is a must see if you are interested in history!! Tour guides were absolutely wonderful!! Very informative & answered questions as well. Dressed in period clothing which added to the experience.

K H Tan

There is a good interpretative guided 45min tour available every 30min on the hour and half hour (led by docents in period costume) , though it focuses more on the history of the mansion building and less on the lives of enslaved people. As an Asian, nonetheless I still took away insights into the history of plantation agriculture, slavery and nuances in the French and Spanish colonial periods. As a person who had caught the "12 years a slave" movie, I enjoyed the visit as it gave me different perspectives from what the movie portrayed.

Nadeen Martinez

Just finished a plantation tour with our tour guide Beverly! Request her! So knowledgeable and doesn’t sugar coat history. Personable and friendly. I learned so much and the grounds are beautiful. A lot of historical artifacts. If you’re in New Orleans, this is a must see/experience! Thank you Beverly!!!

Katie Pritchett

We visited the plantation today with our kiddos and let me tell you it was money well spent! Beverly was our guide and she was so amazing! Very knowledgeable, in character, and interactive with everyone. The second guide was very good also! She went out of her way to come and tell the kids little fun facts. The grounds were well kept and we all loved it! Highly recommend

Alex Hill

My fiance and I visited a few days ago and had a wonderful time. Frank was our tour guide and he was incredible. He was very knowledgeable and passionate. I would hope that anyone who visits is lucky enough to have him as your guide. Destrehen Plantation may not be the biggest or "flashiest" plantation to visit, but it is worth the trip and is rich with history for one to learn. Which in the end, is the greatest thing one can take away with when visiting.

Freda Biddle

A very interesting place. If your in the area it a must

fuzzy buzzy

Very good tour with a great guide. I suggest asking very beverly!

Astepas Algamras

I took the tour which was helpful, but if you wanna go on your own and do not wanna do the tour, I recommend to explore it on your own because you can take your time and read through things on your own pace. There is so much history and so much details about the different owners and slaves and events that happened there.

Lynne Holmquist

Interesting step back into time. Close to New Orleans and a great day trip. Interpreters wove information that brings you back to earlier times.

Ray Aviles

Though the history may have a dark past that is not to be ignored. It is one the most preserved plantations I have seen. Read of the will and testament of the owner and what he wanted to do to with the land after his passing. It will amazing you the attempt at redemption. That family fought it and won. Sad

Wm Huff

We booked this tour along with the swamp boat tour thorough "Grayline Tours". They offer so many options and have the business dialed in tight. Easy access of paid parking next to the pick up/drop off at 400 Toluse in the French Quarter. Midge is a terrific guide giving great history and modern information on the area along your route. So friendly and accomidating. Darren our driver handles that bus like a NASCAR driver. Manuvering through hectic traffic like the championship is all that matters. Safe and conscientious every mile. Another perk with Darren is his grace and consideration by helping each passenger down from the bus at each stop. This man is a true gentleman. You will not soon forget this team. So I urge anyone to book your tours with Grayline and enjoy your time in the New Orleans area, Mardi gras or any time of the year.

Joe Fisher

Extremely beautiful and very knowledgeable staff. Loved learning the history and walking the grounds.

Tammy Vaughn

Brenda was a fabulous tour guide! Just walking around the grounds was delightful.

Deb Porche

This place is great

Jack Melana

Very informative tour and wonderful guide (Dana?). Was an amazing property, and I had the chance to see it in the rain which made it exceptionally beautiful.

Kathleen Olesinski

Very informative tour. I have 2 young kids, I would like to see an emphasis on how poorly slaves were treated and how wrong the practice was.

wayne Stinnett

So beautiful so fun loving it every day

Lisa Waguespack

Great wedding and reception!!!

Kirstie Smith

Beverly was our tour guide and was fantastic. She went into so much depth with the history of the plantation. Thoroughly recommend this tour, which we booked with the swamp boat!

Beth McD

We did a Grey Lines plantation and swamp tour, and this plantation was the highlight of the entire tour (the swamp and bus guide were terrible - don't do it). Jim, the plantation tour guide, was so informative, engaging, and pleasant. We learnt about the owners and slaves of the home, as we walked through each room. Then, had time to ourselves to check out some of the surrounding buildings. The historical society that owns this plantation does a wonderful job of adding authenticity and education to the tour. The history is heartbreaking, but important to remember, so I definitely recommend this plantation tour. The trees around the home are just beautiful too!

Peter Simpson

Beautiful and rich in history and culture. The gentleman giving the tour was amazingly informitive and dressed in period attire.

Mr. Fly Geek

Visited New Orleans for the first time last week, and had an AMAZING time. I love the tour and our tour guide was very informative. I took plenty of pics and soaked up as much history as I could. My only concern/question is why isn't there any person(s) of color apart of the tour staff? For me that would have made my experience that much greater. Other than that I had a great time and would recommend this piece of history to anyone looking to visit New Orleans.

Gary Griffith

Fantastic look into the historical context of plantation life. Knowledgeable guide. Very well maintained . We really enjoyed our tour and learned so much. Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area.

Michael Marleau

You will find it very informative of how the estate grew and went from family member to family member. The was a high of 250 slaves working there in the high of the sugar cane days. Bottom line you will learn about allot of history that mansion went through. A must see and glad the would is different today.

David Holeman

Beverly was a great tour guide. The improvements made since we were here 20 years ago are great. Highly recommend seeing this plantation. It's easy to get to and close to New Orleans.

Josh Muzatko

Didnt take the tour but the gift shop was pretty cool. Bought some stuff the person working the shop was kind of a wet blanket, probably just had a bad day.

Hector Bermudez

Amazing place to come and visit. There is a lot to learn about these plantations and history behind the slavery of America. It rained so hard during our tour and we enjoyed every minute of it. Will be back in the future.

Frank T.

Very nice grounds. Smaller Plantation but very nice

Adam Doud

Beautiful plantation with wonderfully knowledgeable historians. Highly recommend.

Anthony Hendren

It was a beautiful place but the tour was of the house not the whole plantation. Your guide was very nice but had to stay close he was a little quite and I'm a little hard of hearing lol.

Cedric Tai

Beverly was an amazing tour guide! Did a good job of sharing the different sides of plantation stories and talk about enslaved people.

Mital Shah

Nice plantation to visit. Great tour experience with knowledgeable guides.

kevin smith

Highly recommend going here if you haven't already or if you have family or friends visiting, we took our friend from Canada and she loved it, its very informative and you get a first hand look on how they lived back then

Misses Smith

Very interesting tour! I am a history buff and to have the opportunity to step into the oldest plantation on river road was a pleasure! Finding out this was where they filmed scenes in interview with a vampire made it even more exciting! Every plantation on river road has a different approach in storytelling during their tours. This one was getting to know the free black man who was hired to build it, a in depth lesson on how the house was built in the 1700’s, the slave revolt and facts about the the Destrehans family. This is a must to visit...worth every dime we paid! I enjoyed Beverly as our tour guide. She knows her history! She was relaxed, patient and willing to answer all of our questions, quite a walking encyclopedia!!!

Cory Bennett

Well explained tour by Emma. Nice restored facility.

Joe King

My tour guide talked too much. Repeated the same information

Ryan Nichols

It's an old house with some old buildings around it. Kind of neat to see an old plantation, but I was over it after about 20 minutes.

Peter Russell

They charge you to walk the grounds but there are no signs posted. Be careful. Otherwise very lovely.

Andrew Makemson

Fantastic! Beverly, our tour guide was also brilliant. She made it a 10/10.

gul hadar

Really informative tour

Charlaine Corley

So gorgeous. The tour guide was eloquent on the history of the plantation. I learned so much. The trees on the grounds are stunning. The people working the gift shop were extremely nice. The gifts are just beautiful

Jessica Miller

Loved learning about this family and visiting this gorgeous house! Definitely a must see, they have in their possession some pretty amazing artifacts. However, I do agree with previous reviewers comments about this tour skimming over the darker parts of American history, and portraying the times as better than what they really were, specifically for the enslaved. If the tour went more into detail about these crucial aspects it really would be a perfect tour.

Lori Wollney

It is not what they make it out to be on the web page with the events. You don't get to go in every room. I get theNo touching. But it don't have much. It is beautiful by all means.

Graham Vance

This was a cool place to visit. I don't think it portrayed the history as bad as it actually was for the slaves. Walking through the history was amazing. The gift shop was nicely organized. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable.

Nelson Riley

Great guided tour, staff is knowledgeable and enthusiastic.

Asha Jarnigan

Fun and historical. Gives you appreciation for the history

Brook Baker

Frank was an amazing tour guide!

M Clary

Good plantation experience very close to New Orleans. Our guide Jim did a great job telling us all about the history of the house, grounds, and family. Loved getting to see the plantation's document with Thomas Jefferson's signature on it! Walking the grounds was nice. Rachel gave us a wonderful talk about sugar cane to sugar production. The guide in the Education Center gave a very enlightening talk on the Slave Revolt of 1811. At $20 this was a very worthwhile half day outing.

Ryan Stroh

Beverly was a wonderful guide. I highly recommend coming here for an immersive experience that is full of local history.

Amy Kane

I visited as part of the plantation's annual Fall Fest. It was a lot of fun with plenty of local, handmade artwork and food, but the best part was the tour of the house itself. Our tour guide was very engaging and informative.

Courtney Jemison

Beautiful area. Gift shop was very reasonably priced. Excellent picture ops

Rod McClanahan

Absolutely beautiful historic home. Must see for folks who love old antebellum southern creole homes.

Charles Mackay

Great attraction and tour. It was extremely informative and we all came away learning something. Keep up the good work

Lyssa DeSon

Great history wonderful docents. Love loved it.

Tamara Barker

Interesting fact between french and british plantations; French slaves worked from sun up until 3 and had Saturday from noon until Monday morning off for free time. Also ad a part of the Code Noir, slaves had to provide for a portion of their livelihood. British slaves worked sun up to sun down and worked 7 days a week. The slave owner provided everything to and for the slaves.

Helen Hebert

If you are in the area don’t miss a tour of Destrehan Plantation! The home and grounds are immaculate, the tours are limited to a small number of people and the tour guides/ docents in period dress are a real plus. Our guide,Beverly, was very informative and friendly, answered our questions and presented the life and times of the plantation owners and enslaved people in a very thoughtful and sensitive, yet factual manner.

Michelle Galbraith

Absolutely a must-see ...especially if you have several hours to spare before a flight at MSY. Our tour guide today was Frank. And he was exceptional! So knowledgeable and enthusiastic. Everyone we met - from the gift shop folks to our guide to the speaker at the Slave Revolt of 1811 Museum to the administrator who gave us a quick ride to the row of Live Oaks on the property - were all so very friendly and excited to share the history. I am so grateful that our family visited this place today - a truly phenomenal experience.

Frank Franco

The tour was awesome next time you are in New Orleans take at least 1 tour

Rosa Noesi

Beautiful tour. They really knew their knowledge and respected the history of this place. Beverly was energetic and polite.

Bobbie Bornstein

What a beautiful plantation! Jim and Beverly were our outstanding guides. Their knowledge is incredible!

Jim Daniel Leboeuf

Most delightful tour. Very knowledgeable guides

Beau Butterfield

Beautiful plantation home with plenty of historic value that offers insight into a different point in time. The tour guides are very knowledgeable and give an extensive history of the house and it's use through the years.

Douglas Grad

Oldest sugar cane plantation in southern Louisiana, with a very interesting history behind it, especially the African-French architect and how he bought his freedom. Slave quarters were not original to Destrehan. Unfortunately, the land has been encroached upon by development and subdivisions nearby, and a road right in front between the levee and the front lawn, so you don't get the full scope and size of the place as it once was. Not much in the way of original family furnishings either. So it loses a star for those things, but overall is worth a visit. The tour guides were very knowledgeable and didn't sugarcoat the slavery aspect of plantation life. Avoid the giftshop. Do you really need that coffee mug? And don't take the Spanish Moss--it has little buggies in it!

Herman Tureaud

Destrehan Plantation is one of many plantations homes that line the river roads on both sides of the Mississippi river. Each home has it's own story about the owners and what went on in their lives on the plantation. A lot of these stories mirror each other with the exception of a few. Destrehan plantation is a beautiful place to have your wedding and other events.

Larry Westen

very good, worth the time! Jim was great!

Kim Banker

Beautiful and filled with history. Some comments I found a little surprising kind of a trigger, but the rest was really interesting and you can really get a good idea of what the structures were probably like.

John Godinez

Nice tour of the grounds and a knowledgeable guide. They have also done a good job of reproducing and replacing buildings.

john bayliss

Nice day out with good weather.

Shannon McConkie

This was pretty boring. They definitely need to spice up their scripts with more anecdotes and less pointless facts. Very pretty though!

Lisa Swindler

Very nice!! Loved the experience!

Jessie Holmes

Best part of our trip to Louisiana! Our tour guide Jim was AWESOME!

Lucinda Crawford

Nanette was a friendly and knowledgable guide. Nice house and grounds.

John Lane

Not a place to take a group of color and a real turn off when they ask for tips

Terry Duke

The tour of the big house and the history lesson of the slave revolts were two big highlights. Having a chance to examine an authentic document signed by Thomas Jefferson was incredible.

Robert Woodworth

The guided tour is excellent and helps tell us about history of the plantation built in 1790's. We learned a lot.

Diane Johnson

Interesting. Guides where very knowledgeable & professional. Through it rained off & on enjoyed viewing the out buildings after the house tour.

Brinae Franklin

Dont really care for plantations but tourist

Josh O'Keefe

Beautiful property. We did the tour which was pretty good as well. I like how you’re not forced to take it. Three places to do the tour: here, oak alley and Whitney. Bonus point for having cats around the property!

Josh Rossi

Great experience. Not too far from New Orleans, and loved the grounds. Beverley was a great tour guide and we learned a lot about the history of the plantation. The rest of the buildings are very clean, and the information is presented well! Would recommend for families or couples interested in visiting a planation!!

Michele Spence

Lovely plantation located in Destrehan. Staff is fabulous. I highly suggest a stay in one of their cabins, it's truly magical.

Victoria Howard

"Next time you ever visit New Orleans, try visiting theses plantations, you wouldn't believe the history behind them. My daughter and I visit one, and found our Ancestors build each and every one of them" Its history you and your family

Mary S

Jim our guide did a great job,he took his time and made it interesting. So a big thank you.

Cassandra Howard

Got a private tour just due to no one being there. Pretty cool. Price was reasonable. Guy who worked there actually unlocked one of the cabins cuz we hadn't seen it. Actually offered to do it. Amazing. Cute giftshop. Actually bought a few items for my boyfriend's grandkids.

Natalie Wixom Purcell

We had a great time on our visit. Our tour guide, Jim, did a fantastic job. He was very informative and even kept our 6 year old and two 3 year olds interested and engaged

C Kelley

Very nice plantation. Well kept and clean. Super knowledgeable guides. Well worth the price. Different discounts available. If visiting the area definitely stop in.

Dianney Lobo

Visit is largely around the historical aspect of the Destrehan family and the house. Well organized and full of historical insights. Whole thing is choreographed exquisitely. Disappointed that the "plantation visit" is a misnomer.

Bill Capo

I escort people from around the world to Destrehan Plantation as a guide for Gray Line. It is such a beautiful place with so much history. I often hear gasps of surprise when they first see the stunning building. The plantation guides are great at sharing the history of the place in a way that makes it relevant today, while telling the stories of those who lived in the mansion, and those who made it possible. They bring history to life. One nice extra is a truly great gift shop, a real find for visitors seeking beautiful and meaningful keepsakes of their visit. Destrehan is truly a place not to miss when visiting New Orleans.

Martha Morrison

Didn't learned much from tour

Kenneth Kerrick

A good but limited tour of the plantation, giving insight into life of the period.

Anna Lea Oubre

Lovely place, attended wedding reception at Mule barn

Beth Bordelon

This is a Charming tour to take whether a visitor to New Orleans or a local. The guides are extremely knowledgeable and informative. The gift shop is filled with quaint local artists works priced reasonably.

Dale Minvielle

Very nice plantation to visit. Beautiful grounds, geat tour, Lots of history..

joni simpson

Very interesting, and informative tour. Took two 14 year old girls, and they really enjoyed it.

Kahuna Pal

Slavery is wrong and should never be permitted in any nation. Every nation has had slaves at some point in their history and should not be rationalized. I was raised to believe all slave owners beat their slaves and no human compassion ever given. I was surprised to find out how the French treated slaves differently. It seams that the Destrehan plantation was run more like a business. The more skills a person had, the higher the value given, all the way up to the architect that built the plantation building. Still they were slaves. What I did find was compassion. When the slaves revolted, and were by law allowed to be killed, the Destrehans allowed most to return and continue on without losing life or limb. This was compassionate. Their was another level of compassion I found in the documents. On the list of slaves was an old blind woman. She was cared for long after she couldn't contribute as a laborer. I was shocked to find out there was a path to freedom for slaves and there were "Free" blacks in the south during slavery. I didn't know that many free blacks actually owned black slaves, too. Growing up in Iowa our history lessons were only about the atrocities. I forgot the name of our guide (Getting old the memory goes) but she was wonderful. She was respectful of the Destrehans and the slaves. This was a great history lesson which amazed me. I had no idea there was a "Code" which slave owners had to live by in treatment of their slaves. I had no idea there was ever a level of human respect in the treatment of slaves. Thanks for the education, Steve

Judy Stuard

Destrehan Plantation is breathtakingly beautiful. The guided tour was quite educational and fun. The grounds and location, oak trees dripping in Spanish Moss gives one pause to gasp. Would love to return soon!

Eli Berman

The tour guides are very knowledgeable and are very good, it is very family friendly and has a very interesting story.

Aurore Le Roy de la Chohinière

Quite and extremely interesting place with a unique setting and history, and nice and efficient guides. Definitely a great option for a first visit to a plantation and if you want to avoid the crowd and exorbitant prices.

Julia Domaradzka

I loved this plantation. Excellent living history demonstration. Super convenient location close to the airport and it's so worth it to stop there on the way home. It might not be as fabulous as some of the other plantations but the smaller size makes it easier to see if you're short on time. I loved the historical aspects, the demonstration of building methods from 100s of years ago and the document signed by one of the founding fathers. There is also very detailed history of the slave rebellion which was very informative.

Vicky Johnston

It was glorious and very interesting the guide Beverly was very good

Casondra Wada

Our tour guide was wonderful! We went during a holiday weekend and it was not very crowded. The tours allow for lots of questions, and our guide was very knowledgeable. After the tour, you can use the map they give you to explore on your own. There were plenty of signs to guide you as you explored the grounds, but as we ran into our guide later, he was more than happy to give you a more in depth take on what we were looking at. Also, we bought tickets online and on our way there we missed our exit, we called and the staff was very accommodating and fit us in with the next group. Parking was also very convenient.

Mike Degerness

Jim was our guide and he did a very good job sharing history here. A stop well worth making, highly recommended.

Bob Byrd

Very informative tour. A lot of information to learn about the origins of the plantation as well as New Orleans and Louisiana. Respective of the culture during the working years of the plantation.

shelia Rollinson

This is one of the worst tours I've been on. As an African-American woman I felt it edified the slave owners. It shows the grandiose of the slave owners. I just didn't like the feelings that I got during the tour. If you are African-American I think you would appreciate it more if it was told from a different perspective. This was towed from the slave owners perspective and edified to slave on it. It was his story not mine.

Richard Ballenger

Pretty good. Pleasant tour guide.

David McAlpine

We had Kathy give us a tour. Her knowledge and passion were exceptional and made for a fantastic experience. Thank you!
