This Museum corresponds to the category of War museum.
A great little museum with a great collection of artifacts. Sadly this place is overlooked in recent years because of the huge National WWII Museum complex as well as all the hate going around regarding Confederate history and the Civil War in general. If you're ever in New Orleans stop in to this little gem and take your time going through it. I go when ever I get a chance and always learn something new.
The museum is so vast. Rare items on display. Very happy to visit.
Super experience
Alot of History!
Nice small museum
Very neat museum! There is a good selection of the copies of relics from the Civil War!
Great seeing the other side of the story! TSWRA!
This museum is conveniently located next to the World War II Museum in New Orleans. There are plenty of artifacts relating to Louisiana's role in the Confederacy as well as some artifacts relating to Jefferson Davis and other leaders of the Confederacy. Seeing all of the memorabilia would probably take a long time but it's possible for the average visitor to spend a half hour to maybe an hour and enjoy a film as well as their own interpretations of the artifacts. The staff is very helpful and knowledgeable.
Very interesting
One of the finest collections of Civil War Confederate military items that I've ever had the pleasure of seeing! Definitely holds your interest throughout and well displayed. Focus is mainly on Louisiana in the war but other states are represented, as well. I highly recommend a visit to this museum!
Next to WWII museum, go! Best Civil war museum I have visited.
Wonderful collection, worth the time.
Awesome museum. A must see.
Very historically relevant. Beautiful architecture. Very interesting and worth while!
I'm not a supporter of the confederacy as a northerner and as a person of color. Confederate museum has a great deal of civil war history for unbiased historians of the American Civil War.
Underrated museum
$10 for a very small exhibit
Very nice museum! Lots of artifacts! Enjoyed the short film!
Awesome history
This place give fantastic detail of individuals of the "war of the states" (not the civil war according to them)
A great rainy day activity. An awesome walk through civil war history. So many items from the war, so well preserved and maintained. Highly recommended this for everyone
That one star review from Brady Shields is super lame. The museum does not promote confederates or any sort of racism. It simply displays and educates on items from the Civil War. This is part of American history and needs to be remembered regardless of your stance on any issues. Great display of artifacts and historical information here. They also have a video presentation that gives some information on specific soldiers stories and experiences. I'd recommend it if you have a few days in the city.
We found the Confederate Memorial Hall and Museum to be far more interesting and engaging than we expected. Stopped by after the WWII Museum (not to miss) and we're fascinated by the collection of arms, flags, uniforms and personal items.
The Confederated Memorial Hall Museum, Civil War, is small but the historical perspective is rather unique. Don't miss it!
This museum is a little dated. It is the oldest operating museum in Louisiana, and it looks it. When you think about the difference between this place and the World War II Museum just across the street... Boy. Don't go in thinking you'll have a similar experience about a different war. It's made up of old wood-and-glass cases filled with artifacts labeled with paper cards. The relics are amazing, particularly if you take the time to find the pieces made by the POWs, but there is not a lot of context here. Most of the information does deal with individual soldiers because it was their families that donated the swords, uniforms, and other accessories of war. The architecture of the building is quite interesting.
This is a cool building though l've only seen the outside of the building.
Wonderful representation of the last "gentleman's" war. Our Southern heritage needs to be preserved and revered against the ongoing revisionist politically corrupt (correct) onslaught. Marse Bob, I love you.
Loved it! They have some fantastic artifacts.
Fantastic Step Back in Time: If you seek a Civil War museum, remember that this is a Confederate Museum that was built (in 1891) to house the artifacts & documents of the South. It is not supposed to represent a Northern point of view. It is definitely worth a visit.
Small but very nice museum, real history, real bullets incrusted in tree logs, and its near other world class museums
Nice artifacts and reasonable admission price. Friendly staff.
Interesting place
This museum contains no display cases making reference to blacks who served on the Confederate side. Yet, such people did exist, both slaves and free men. This is a contentious issue that needs to be aired. I was told that the museum store has books on this subject but a greater effort than that needs to be in place. I noticed no black visitors. Perhaps if there was some black representation this might change.
Small and concise Southern Confederate site
Civi war trust Nraebig31 Ww1 1914 town battle Joliet army
A must see when visiting New Orleans. So much history there, we spent 4 hours and I could have stayed much longer.
Nice little museum!
This is a well run, wonderful little museum. You can spend 1 - 2 hours here, but probably not more. There are so many amazing civil war items to view, and a small gift shop area. Pro tip - go here before the WW2 museum (right across the street), and sign up for the museum pass. This gets you into both museums for much cheaper than paying for them individually.
Being from the north I can only give it a 5 star. It was really quite interesting and educational. Really enjoyed it.
Zero mention of black and native people forced to fight in the war. No mention of slaves or slave owning in the glorifying descriptions of confederate figures. Gift shop selling confederate flags and images of despicable figures like Lee. No history of women in the war aside from rich white ladies, also glorified. I regret giving this museum any money. Instead of an educational center if was a glory pit of the confedaracy.
A lot of stuff in a confined space. Worth taking your time look at it all; give yourself about 90-120 minutes to go through the place otherwise you'll miss bits.
Ce musée nous râpé le à quel point cette guerre fut sanglante
The museum is not too big, but has housed a big amount of artifacts and personal stories in the small space. It does not have a recommended sequence to visit it, but offers a small video that gives more context on what to look for.
To those that disliked the cant towards the south i suggest going to museums up north and see history the way they want to see it. You''re in the south this is my history and my heritage LIVE WITH IT
It's an integral part of the Southern heritage and Louisiana. Items in here are well taken care of.
I Realty Enjoyed it last time I went Through it Well Worth seeing the History
Unique collection
Good history display
Awesome place! It's small but it is fill with a lot of history. I wished I had more time to see everything but had to get to the airport. I highly recommend it to any history buff or anybody just looking for an informative museum
Wonderful place! Especially if you like Southern history!
The Civil War memorabilia is worth going to see.
Museu dels confederats.1r fan un video per situar l accio.Nomes te una sala amb armes, objectes i uniformes.
Great historical pieces to look at. Wish it was bigger. Took 20 minutes to look/read everything.
Excellent for a smaller museum.
The museum is well represented and the staff is knowledgeable of the historic events it represents. The Civil War was a tragedy for all who were thrust into it, but inspired millions to believe in their fellow man and his personal rights. Ultimately keeping the country together made us all stronger.

Great
An absolutely amazing Museum, we were very impressed.
There was a short film telling the story of some of the soldiers that fought and died during the civil war. Lots of artifacts that are amazing and a small gift shop.
Nice museum, but not much there. A movie in the back with 6 chairs, did not see.
Great collection.
Great place to see things from the Civil war
This was worth the time. We should not forget those who died in the Civil War. The lost men of the South are just as important as those of the North.
Lots of artifacts in a distinctive stone building. A bit too focused on individual soldiers, I'd like to learn a bit more about the causes/development of the civil war.
The museum was very interesting being that they have authentic artifacts, and the sheer number of them along with their quality is pretty amazing.
Must see in New Orleans. Great artifacts
Wonderful memorabilia! Really, really awesome stuff that you won't see anywhere else. Lots of Jefferson Davis' personal effects, General Lee artifacts, numerous flags, and even field medical equipment. Great preservation too. I'm amazed!
Very small collection but has a lot of artifacts that really humanize the conflict.
2nd largest collection of cofederate memoribilia in the US. Interesting, nice collection of General Lee's family.
Plenty of things to see and fairly objective.
Lots of information. Great for History lovers.
Small
awesome history in this collection, they have priceless family heirlooms of the generals of the civil war and even personal objects of general lee and other important leaders of the war and the building is in a safe location and looks awesome, only reason it gets 4 stars as its kinda smaller then advised, if not reading each individual summary of each artifact you can walk through it all in 20-30 min which also is fine (but we alloted some hours of our trip for this museum and then had to come up with other plans on the spot..not the museums fault obviously just an FYI it's a smaller museum)
Lots of memorabilia.
Excellent
Great museum if you are into history.
This is a museum you have to visit
THIS IS NOT HANDICAP ACCESSIBLE. Stairs are steep no ramp to get in. Really sad we wasted time and money to get there then could not get in.
Ok, so the docents here put an emphasis on this being the past and do not act like sore losers for how the war turned out (the Civil War that is). There are basic historical markers, facts about what happened, uniforms, weapons and just so much interesting stuff. There are a few steps in front to get in, and I do not know if there is a ramp or any way for handicapped to get in. Set in a fully restored building, there is just so much to the displays to look at. There is a small gift shop. This was an enjoyable visit.
Interesting things to look at. Only seating for 5 people for the movie:( so I didn't get to watch it which was disappointing.
An okay museum that if you've seen one of the kind, you've seen this one too. If you happen to be in check out their plaque above the "Spoons" Butler chamber pot. Major typo.
Small just not worth the price of admission
Gosto de história, então passar por este museu é parte do roteiro.
Great museum, sad to see history that made us who we are today took down from cities
Great Insights from the individual soldier's perspective !!
Very interesting. Almost got into an argument with a lady at the ticket desk about the need to remove statues celebrating the confederate war "heroes".
Small museum, packed with interesting artifacts and history.
Very small but alot to view
Surprisingly interesting and even non-partisan in some places. However, as mentioned by another reviewer, the entire slavery aspect is glossed over. But it is good for Northerners to remember that those in the south suffered, even if they were ultimately on the losing side. Worth a visit, but can make a person uncomfortable at times.
Excellent museum with period items.
Small museum with limited content.
One of the best museums I have ever visited. They have a ton of historic material, and actual relics of the famous southern Generals. By far the best Civil War museum I have ever seen. Leave plenty of time to visit this place, as there is lots to see.
I think this is an overlooked gem! A sobering experience, but I think we should remember! The items in this museum are fabulous. The information was excellent. The building is absolutely beautiful! I am so glad we stumbled upon this special place!
Incredible assortment of weapons, uniforms, and personal items actually used during the Civil War. Amazing to think that you're no more than a foot away from a uniform actually worn by General Braxton Bragg or personal belongings of Jefferson Davis including lock of Robert E Lee hair, along with wonderful artwork. A special treat was the portions of the trees brought from the battlefields still embedded with rounds from cannons and rifles. Most of all I was pleasantly amazed with the intimate and personal nature of the items on display and the stories behind them. All housed in a beautiful building with a wonderful history. An amazing historical and cultural significance venue, I enjoyed it thoroughly and learned a lot and highly recommend it to anyone else interested in this type of subject material.
Great museum about civil war history.
Nice to learn history of the South
Exceptional repository of Confederate artifacts. This is possibly one of the largest collections there is. A must see for all ages!
Very object oriented museum. I wish I had brushed up on Civil War history before coming.
Great small museum with kind and knowledgeable staff and cool artifacts.
Very interesting, fascinating artifacts from the Civil War. An hour isn't enough time, give Yourself two hours. Highly recommended, especially since NOLA has decided to remove historical monuments and statues.
Love it great history
very nice great exhibits and film
A smallish museum housing artifacts and profiling prominent Confederates. Interesting historical perspective, without condoning misguided beliefs of the time.
Fantastic!
A lot of very valuable old memorabilia, collected over more than a century. Very detailed exhibits. Easily worth the entry fee.
AWESOME place to visit. Great place to learn about our southern history. LOVED it!!!
Small place but worth the visit. For me the highlight was the lesson on secession from the Museum caretakers. Just ask them about why the state seceded. I learned much to augment what I'd learned in school.
Recommend!
Very small museum.
Great repository of historical artifacts
I really loved this place! It’s small but I could have spent 4 hours here reading everything. The items on display were phenomenal for that time period. Anyone who loves history, especially the Civil War will appreciate the collection. Kids did get bored but honestly they were tired.
Nice little History museum, see it before people who want to change history books decide they don’t like it and want to tear it down.
It’s pretty crazy that, in this day and age, a museum about the civil war can spare a whole section for artifacts from Jefferson Davis’s kids and only mention slavery once, in a tableau in a side room (and this downplayed slavery’s significance!). I had been looking for an interesting, thoughtful examination of the confederate side and instead left feeling like I needed a shower. Can’t believe I gave these people the admission fee. Skip and listen to the podcast Uncivil instead.
Grateful this place still exists.
Great value. Well organized and packed with interesting facts and stories.
Preserving Southern history - in spite of the Taliban/ISIS style destruction and cultural reign of terror ongoing in New Orleans by the current political regime.
An excellent trip through the history
All I can say is wow. This historic building houses some great memorabilia, and great stories and artifacts from the civil war. There are even tree stumps tucked in between cases with cannon balls and shrapnel buried in them. Lots of uniforms and weapons from the period.
Very Interesting
Great museum
We really enjoyed our time in the museum great information. MUSEUM IS VERY IMPORTANT TO SEE. It was sad to see they took down Roberrt E. Lee when he did nothing to them and sorry to hear his statue is in access with police cars and everything. New Orleans should put it back where it belongs. By the way I'm not racist. I'M NOT FREE HAVE TO MAME A LIVING AND GO NY THE RULES LIKE EVERYONE EVERYONE ELSE.
Very interesting and a lot of authentic garb
You could spend about 45-60 minutes in the museum. It's very small. The collection of artifacts are top notch quality, but the placards are rather bias against the North. The slavery aspect of the war has been greatly "white washed" and down played. Also, I'm fairly certain the creepy cashier was a white supremacist based on a symbol on his necklace commonly associated with the Klan. Make no mistake about it, this is not a civil war museum. This is a museum celebrating the Confederecy. If your willing to pay $10.00 (They do not offer discounts for US Veterans) to be surrounded by creepy people to look at some seriously high quality civil war artifacts than this is your rainy day stop, but if your not than I wouldn't advise it. Besides, the WW II museum is just across the street, bigger, better, longer , and much more worthy of your dollar.
Awesome artifacts and great architecture
Unannounced closings, waste of time
Well worth a visit if you enjoy history.
Lots of history here.
Lots of history and nice architecture. Being not as gimmicky as the National WW2 Museum gives it a more solemn feel.
Well worth a visit if you are a history buff. Not to glorify the cause, but it was interesting to see the point of view.
Awesome a must visit! a step back in time mostly confederate awesome. 10 bucks to get in a must visit! Great artifacts my favourite items Jeff Davis saddle and Confederate battle flag that said "leave us alone". I'd. Like to see more yankee items added but what an interesting step back in time right next to ww2 museum it's open Tue.-saturday .a uniquely awesome, special place! Only 10 dollars a bargain!
Fantastic slice of history. This museum has an amazing, friendly and informative staff that will make your visit more than worthwhile. It also has an extremely pleasing/sensible layout. Hats off to the curator/s and everyone involved with this place.
very educational
We visited here in 2014. The museum is pleasant, but not an overly extensive collection. You could probably kill 45-60 minutes here, but I would not label this a "must see" destination.
Worth the visit!
The museum itself is a historic exhibit. This place is like stepping back in time.
Small, but it still has a lot of exhibits
Objectively shares the history of the Civil War as it affected Louisiana. Above average items in their shop. Friendly staff. Worth the price of admission.
This museum is full of Civil War artifacts that belonged to people who's stories are depicted throughout the beautiful hall that houses it. Very fascinating. The gentleman that answered our questions also had some great stories to share. If you love history, don't miss this little gem.
Great place. Allow more time than you think you will need, then double that.
Wonderful group of civil war artifacts and history.
Very interesting museum. Very well done
Good history
Many small and personal artifacts. Allow time for reading the stories. Nice and cool.
Very informative and lots of artifacts donated from family members.
Old fashioned museum with numerous exhibits with type written explanation. No mention of slavery. No hands on interactive exhibits
Love this place
You fell as if you should whisper in this amazing historical place.
Great place to learn REAL history about the way between the States. The displays and descriptions bring it to life. Highly recommend at least a half day, a full day if you're a history buff.
It's small but full of great history
great artifacts
If you are a history buff, definitely a place to check out.
An incredible little museum! The history of the building is as fascinating as the artifacts inside. A must visit for Civil War buffs.
Sad, but true part of history. Great historical pieces.
Original artifacts from the War between the States
