This little gem of a museum is in the middle of the French Quarter. Nevertheless, it is usually quiet. The museum is a house hidden in the block. Furnishings are authentic of mid 1800s lifestyles. Being inside made it feel like I was in another world!

Very interesting museum, nice gift shop, helpful folks working there.

This was an interesting little hole in the wall museum. A house preserved as it would have been in the year 1850. Very interesting..

Great guided tour from Kathy was great. Prefered this tour company as guides are volunteers for the museum. The proceeds go to the museum not overhead and comissioned tour guides that are abundant in New Orleans. Max number in tour was 15, ours today was 6. Learned a lot. Volunteers trained by the museum so I am confident the info given wasn't embellished. Fan of staying and benefiting local groups, not hyped up commercial run tours where you just feel like a number in a herd.

Benjamin Williams

Took us a while to make sense of the pottery exhibition, but enjoyed this quick historical stop.

Mandy Blair

This was a really cool hidden gem- I enjoyed seeing the old apartment and it was only about 3 dollars. I only gave 3 stars though because I wish they did a tour and it is pretty small. If you have 30 mins on your hand go! But don’t go out of your way.

Medium to small size museum, not much of description about the items inside, but well decorated and clean, really interesting to see every room the way they were in the past, entrance price is cheap

Cesar A

Not a bad place, just a little small, probably expected more since I've been to lots of historical houses and buildings.

Kaitland Taflinger

Very quick tour, but great history. Loved that they they added soundtracks for the era. So ingenious!!

Tina Miller

Peguy Gaboton

A little history gem

Lee Fields

The walking tour is great.

Oscar Fonseca

This museum is too expensive for what you will see. It is a very small house, and displays a bunch of objects that come from different owners and periods of time. I recommend you go to the Cabildo first to buy tickets for multiple sites in a bundle and save some money.

Gina Studer-Hunt

Interesting place to explore. Self guided tour was affordable at $3 per person.

I took the tour from here by the Friends of Cabildo. Had a great time with a retired school teacher, Diane C was awesome. After the tour of the French quarter was able to tour the upstairs of the 1850 shop.

It's a small place to visit definitely not ada friendly but if you got a hour to kill it's only 5.00 dollars to get . There is about 10 rooms to see a glimpse into the past.

Adriene Williams

High price for not that much to see beutiful costumes on display for masking ceremonies

Briana McCarthy

Interesting little peek into a home from the mid 19th century and how it would have been set up. It was nice to step out of the busy streets for a few minutes into a quieter, cool place.

Pim Reinders

Nicely preserved house. It shows the contrast between the living quarters of the slaves/servants, and those of the well-to-do.

Aryan Manohar

Quite.

Great place to visit! I would recommend visiting this historical site to anyone visiting New Orleans.

Mike Chicago

I'm giving this 4 stars. But don't expect a lot. It's just an example of a house in 1850. Neat stuff. If you're into interior design (like the girl who would be my girlfriend), you'll love it. It will only take 45 mins to an hour to go through, so it won't take your whole day up, and it's about 200 feet from 2 other museums in the Jackson Square area.

Alex Mirov

This is such a unique historic gem. The house is displayed with furnishings and details from the 1850s, and show how various families that lived in the Pontalba Buildings through that decade lived, from the luxurious parlour to the spartan slave quarters. This museum changes with the seasons, showing Creole Christmas traditions in December, and the lighter furnishings and curtains in the summer. It doesn't shy away from slavery either. The servant/slave staircases that take you down from the family quarters are wicked steep, so be advised. They can be dangerous for people with balance issues. This is a must-see for people who want to be immersed in antebellum Creole New Orleans, and who are fascinated by material history. There's few historic houses compiled with such detail, especially those devoted to the middle and upper-middle class. It's absolutely worth the entrance fee!

Admission was free with our walking tour, but we didn't find it that interesting unfortunately.

Chris Williams

An interesting look into what life was like in 1850s New Orleans. Easy, self guided tour.

Richard Bryan

The place for New Orleans history.

Rose Garcia

Had a small window of time and this was a perfect fit. Very much enjoyed this opportunity to see the inside of an early 19th century home.

Bruno Ríos

One of the best bargains in the city. Get a guided tour through the house, it costs like 5 bucks and you'll learn the fascinating story of the heart of New Orleans. Guides are very knowledgeable and nice and it has an interesting gift shop.

This is a historic site, it's setting overlooks Jackson Square, the house is original and the items in it are original of the period, the house has an interesting past, especially regarding its original owner and my wife and I enjoyed listening to our well informed and friendly guide, I particularly enjoyed hearing that Jenny Lind 'The Swedish Nightingale' portrayed recently in 'The Greatest Showman' movie had stayed in the house, I would definitely recommend a visit and get a guided tour

Daniel Wolin

Museum was nice and personal walking tour from Cheryl was awesome and fun!

Peter Smith

Quaint, and interesting. Hidden gem!

Amira Brito

Great experience! Definitely worth the trip.

M. A. Wargo

Was an interesting recreation of a nineteenth century house. Not as interesting as the Cabildo or Louisiana state museum

Smevin Bravis

Fascinating! So cool to get a glimpse into the life of people from 150+ years ago. The low doorways and shorter tables/chairs were such a trip - I forget that people were shorter on average back then! The slave quarters was a bit of a gut punch after seeing the blatant opulence upstairs, but just imagine their quarters in poorer areas

Holly Donohoe

Valerie Clingen

Neat little time hop. Very cool to see life in the 1850's. Best bang for your buck in the heart of the French Quarter. Wish more rooms were set up, sad to only see a few.

Cristina Rivas

Ok for what you pay, but nothing remarkable

Beate Pradel

This historic townhouse can be seen in a self-guided tour or with a docent. The house consists of three bedrooms, a parlour, dining room, a small kitchen, an office (?) , all of which were furnished to reflect the 1850s. If you want to see a bit of history but don't have time or don't wish to visit a museum, you could tour this in 10 minutes or take more time with a docent. Note: Narrow stairs and walkways.

Suresh M

Fantastic heritage preserved

Douglas Stout

Very interesting self-guided tour of a period apartment/townhouse on Jackson Square.

Tom Jones

Interesting to see how the apartments were set up. Insite into life in a more simple time.

hong chao

Came here during lunch time and the place was empty! We had the whole house for ourselves to explore. Educational and docents were extremely informative. Stay an hour and take a look around to have a feel of what it was like living here in 1850.

Mike Clancy

Not extensive but a cool representation of life in the 1850s. Definitely worth the low admission fee!

Debbie Jones

I love this home and the history behind it. You get a real Feeling of life in this time period. Tour guides are knowledgeable and can make you feel like you belong in the this period of time.
