Great art exhibits. When I went, it was free entrance. Educational exhibit. Nice coffee and pastry shop, too.

My toddler and I come on fridays for their story, song, and craft time from 10:30-11:15. She loves it. There are a few stories surrounding a theme, the last one was emotions which was great. The craft and the the songs reinforce the theme, which is even better. Overall a great experience for the wee ones. Not to mention an in house coffee shop that serves delicious coffee... and the art, lol, many many arts on display.

Great place to watch basketball! Very nice!

I was a little upset because I called ahead and asked if they had wheelchairs available they said yes. So I went with my husband and they didn't have an at all in the building. I feel like that was a waste of time. My husband stayed in the car while I was with our children. It was supposed to be a family outgoing. As the museum goes very interesting the children enjoyed themselves.

It's nice to be able to walk through a free art museum, and the staff was really nice and fun. However, the art was mediocre at best, and the exhibits were not well organized or labeled.

Went to the KMAC triennial today where local artists were on display. This museum doesn't show local artists exclusively, they show work from artists all over the world. However, I really enjoyed this exhibit and my enjoyment was heightened by the fact that all of the amazing artwork was made by artists that are either from Kentucky or currently work/live in Kentucky. We have amazing artists here and they deserve a place at the table as much as anyone else. I've enjoyed all the exhibits at this museum and the atmosphere is very modern, clean, and open.

Chairs, chairs, and more chairs; loved the circular chairs when I first walked in the door. Each chair throughout was unique and carefully crafted with a description telling "its" story. There is an area for kids to explore, draw, and create their own paper chair. This was a really neat place to visit.

Anything free deserves 5 Stars no matter what. There was friendly staff that greeted us when we walked in and even gave us a tour. Since they change out the artwork every month or so I think I'll visit again.

Perfect stop for art interested people. The staff was really friendly and the exhibition was worth to be seen. And we got a recommendation for another good place.

Nicole Swanner

Really, really, really enjoyed my visit. One of the exhibits they had while I was there was on chairs which was unexpectedly touching. They had several areas set up where you could sit down and make your own art. I would love to take my son here!

Jeff Yeh

It's free, kind of small as there's only 2 exhibits at a time, 3 floors, your in and out in roughly 20-30 minutes. The exhibits they had were interesting though, good amount of information for the pieces.

Celia Hibben

Best atmosphere of all the many, many art museums/galleries I've ever visited. Exhibits are always super interesting. The classes are really fun too

KMAC Museum (previously known as the Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft) is an American museum located in the West Main District of downtown Louisville, Kentucky, which "explores the relationship between art and craft by identifying art as big ideas and craft as the intersection between process, materials and labor."[1] It is a nonprofit organization supported in part by the Fund for the Arts and Kentucky Arts Council, as well as many public and private donors. History Founded in 1981 by Phyllis George Brown, then First Lady of Kentucky and former Miss America, the Kentucky Art and Craft Foundation was started to build interest in Kentucky's rich craft and art resources.[2] With the help of Mary Shands, the start of the center began with ease. In 1984 the organization moved into the lower level of a West Main Street building to have more space for things like a gift shop.[2] When the move occurred the west district of downtown Louisville had low occupancy rates for the buildings. The location of several museums like the Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft helped revitalize this area of downtown. Since 1984 the organization has presented hundreds of exhibitions, reaching approximately 100,000 viewers and students annually. By 1991 the Kentucky Art and Craft Foundation has tried to be a leader in the community of preserving Kentucky's heritage in its arts and crafts. It has held several promotion events to help improve its goal. Over ten years ago the organization recognized the importance of including educational programming as part of their mission. In 1990 the state's educational system had been restructured resulting in the Kentucky Education Reform Act (KERA).[3] The museum's educational programs are tightly connected to the KERA goals of combining art education with other subjects such as history, social studies, mathematics and language arts. Over the years, their educational programming has expanded and its focus has continued to increase their work with schools in Jefferson County and throughout the state. In January 2001, the organization purchased two adjacent buildings on West Main Street in the heart of Louisville's West Main Street Historic District.[citation needed] Built in the 1880s the building is a four-story cast iron structure with a pastel facade and giant windows. After renovation, the facility provides the organization with 28,500 square feet (2,650 m2) of interior space in which to operate, spread over four floors and a lower level. The new facility increased the size and visibility of the Gallery Shop, with frontage on Main Street, and houses three exhibition galleries: the Steve Wilson Gallery, the Mary & Al Shands Gallery, and the Lindy & Bill Street Gallery.[citation needed] The Lindy & Bill Street Gallery, on the second floor overlooking Main Street, is rented for meetings and entertaining. The third floor houses the Education Center as well as a small south facing gallery and the fourth floor is used for administrative offices. The museum is in close proximity to the Kentucky Science Center, the Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory, the Frazier History Museum and the Muhammad Ali Center, which gives the nickname of the area as "Museum Row".

It's a FREE contemporary art museum with a slant towards local crafts. They also have a cafe and hands on area. It's not spectacular but is really cool and just super clean. The art is unique and they have a nice thing going. Also it's super central so you can just go there between things downtown - you can't beat free museums.

My 5 year old loved the buildings exhibit and chair exhibit! And there's a fun shopping area for souvenirs. We'll be back!

Amy Dobben

Modern art isn't really my thing, but the exhibitions are unique. The staff is friendly, and the gift shop and kids' area are full of interesting things to see and do.

Caitlin Clarke

I absolutely loved KMAC. I wish I could go back! My friends and I were out-of-towners visiting from up north for a conference in the city, and this museum was one of the only places we could find open on a Sunday before flying out. I'm so glad we found it. The ultimate museum aesthetic and feel- so warm and cozy and friendly. All the art was, of course, beautiful and thought-provoking. Even the coffee was absolutely delicious and made on the spot. My friends and I stayed here for a good while just chatting and hanging out in the lobby after viewing the pieces. The employees on the ground floor were highly knowledgeable and so kind and relaxed. They made us feel welcomed and comfortable. You could tell right away that they absolutely were passionate about the arts. On top of all this, admission was free! I still keep my pamphlets and stickers that I got here, and if I ever come back to Louisville I will 100% stop by. I'm sure my friends would say the same.

Very disappointed in items for sale in the museum store .It used to be all the items were from Kentucky artists and the store served as a showcase for many artists. Now it appears that fewer than 20 percent are from the state. Not worth the trip to shop.
