REVIEWS OF Kentucky Military History Museum IN Kentucky

Doug Caldwell

This museum is included with price of visiting the main KY state museum down the hill. Two stories of military history of KY in the building; oldest displays on the first floor and WW1 and later on 2d floor. The state as well as KY citizens are featured (such as only KY solider awarded Medal of Honor in WW1). Limited amount of free parking next to building. We took about an hour to tour the exhibits. We are from TX and was impressed with the effort KY put into honoring its state and citizens.

Little museums like this always turn out to be the best. For the amount of space they have to use I thought the displays and information presented was very good. You probably won't spend a lot of time here but it is worth the stop if you are in town.

I thought this museum was amazing. Very cool military arsenal history. Very friendly service while there too

More like weapons museum. Though there are some anecdotes of KY military hero's through out history. It started as a private collection, so it should come as no surprise that weapons are the primary display. It's small, maybe an hour worth of material, but the staff is knowledgeable. Unisex single service bathrooms. And I don't remember how much it cost, but it wasn't very expensive.

I was very surprised at how many items, and how much history this museum actually holds. I was greeted by an associate who had the time to accompany me on my self guided tour. What an added bonus! He was a wealth of knowledge! If there is more than one person working in the museum when you arrive, you can ask one of them for a guided tour. I highly suggest for individuals as well as groups. There is plenty of space! its so much bigger than it appears on the outside. I believe people of all ages will find the stories in this museum of interest.

This place was cool . Had every kind of handgun and military artillery you never heard of from all the wars plus uniforms, both nurses and soldiers . Don't forget the knives and swords . The displays of actual military soldiers and nurses with vocal recordings of their experiences was a nice touch. Some swords were beautifully detailed , masterpieces .

Extremely nice collection for such a small space. The only down side is that the placards are very lacking in technical details and sometimes wildly inacurate. The person or committee making them up apparently thought Ca. meant when the item on display was donated. It really means approximately when the event being described took place. The exhibits end up having dates a hundred or more years wrong. Sad but the displays are still excellent.

I toured the two-story museum on June 27, 2018. I arrived only about 15 minutes before closing time, but I enjoyed a quick self-guided tour that enabled me to see much. Persons paying $8 for a self-guided tour of the impressive Thomas D. Clark History Center (The Kentucky Historical Society Museum) also get to take a self-guided tour of this Kentucky Military History Museum a few blocks away. They can also take a guided tour of the Old State Capitol Building. I think this is a great value. Personally, the Kentucky Military History Museum interested me least of the three locations. I visited it last. I arrived about 15 minutes before its 5 p.m. closing time, and quickly browsed through both floors of the two-story museum. This facility contains an impressive collection of weaponry from cannons to pistols, as well as uniforms. I was especially interested in the oral histories and listened to parts of a couple of them despite my limited time. I also liked seeing the uniforms and equipment of medical personnel in the military. The two persons at the reception desk were friendly and probably would have gladly answered questions about the artifacts, but since I only had fifteen minutes until closing time I focused on seeing the exhibits. I urge persons taking the tours of the other two museums in the three-for-one $8 deal to allow a little time for this one. Though I didn't find it as impressive as the other two (Maybe because I'm basically a pacifist!), I would still like to return and devote more time to seeing the exhibits and listening to the oral histories.

Nice, big gun display if that's what you're looking for.

Super small in size. But large in content. Expect to spend two to three hours here to truly sink in the fantastically laid out museum.

It's a great place for Kentuckians to see lots of guns and the history behind their creation. In a way it almost seemed to me that they seperated the guns and weapons from the actual harm they caused. New inventions like the maxim gun revolutionized this industry however they also caused unspeakable amounts of death and I feel like the impact the guns had on many people was simply left unstated.
