Thank you for this museum. My maternal grandfather was severely injuried in a coal mining accident in Alva on September 14, 1943 and passed away from his injuries on September 15, 1943.

This museum was an excellent resource to know what it was like to be a coal miner in the 1900s. The living historical heritage of coal mining in this museum in Harlan County, Kentucky in four levels is worth a stop. The museum perfectly exhibits the lifestyle of a coal miner, his family and his community up until 1963. I really enjoyed the basement exhibits that portray the evolution of coal mining tools, from pick axes to drilling bits. I paid a visit here with my team where we were studying about Appalachian history of dependency. The illustrations in the museum helped me resonate with what I had learned from book. I would recommend this visit to anyone who is curious about Appalachian Coal Mining history.

I grew up in Benham and I still love it . My mother was also born and raised in Benham with IH being her father's and father in laws employer and then her husband's, my dad, as well. The staff were great, the memories were almost overwhelming, and I left knowing I'd be back soon. Great great job done there. Loved it all

Stories behind it

This impressive museum contains a wide variety of items on four levels, including a gift shop. I enjoyed touring it with my mom, a sister, and a niece on Saturday, July 13, 2019. The museum contains displays related to various aspects of coal mining operations, including old mining caps, lights, and various pieces of equipment. But, it also includes displays of other aspects of a coal miner's life: a barber shop, a home’s furnishings, a hospital room, a store, and a soda/sandwich shop. A display related to Loretta Lynn who grew up in southeastern Kentucky includes at least two dresses that she wore. A portion of the basement includes a mock mine with an entrance about 54 inches in height which allows one to experience a bit of what it’s like to be underground. As you seek to walk or crawl around it, think about the fact that many mines in southeastern Kentucky are significantly less than 54 inches high. An elevator is available in addition to stairs for traveling between the four levels. Admission to the Kentucky Coal Mining Museum is $8 for adults, with cheaper prices for senior citizens and children. Please try to visit this museum if you are in the area. I urge persons who visit the Kentucky Coal Mining Museum in Benham to also visit nearby Lynch, Kentucky where an exhibition mine can be toured, and various old company structures can be seen, and there is a train locomotive and train car that persons can climb into, etc.

If you are into history and seeing how people lived this is for you. Four floors of coal mining life set up as the coal mining families would have lived in the early 1900. Basement has a mock coal mine to stoop through. Very cool place to understand what coal miners have had to go through.
