Great place to check out, but 1 star due to the staff...dealing with Peggy in particular in scheduling our tour was unpleasant to say the least....Let's just say she isn't the friendliest person in the world to deal with.

There is convenient parking next to the old officers house, and information center. You can visit the museum for free, and they even offer you to watch a short film explaining the history. The trails literally go for miles. Most of the trails are in open fields, but there is about a mile and a half trail through the woods. All the trails offer you an amazing look into the past and history of camp nelson. I would recommend this place to all my fellow hikers, weather you like history or not, the trails are a lot of fun and offer great views in the woods.

Jeff Boyer

Unfortunately, the visitor center is not open today. No signs saying why. But I took a nice walk on the trails following the fortifications. Better trail markers and signage are needed. I hope they will come with time.

Arrived after the interpretive center closed but the wonderful lady closing up let me come in and watch the video before she left. The grounds are great to go walking through and seeing were everything was during the war. Would love to come back and see inside the buildings as well.

Visited the camp with my son for a school field trip. I had always wanted to visit and was not disappointed. I'm hoping to visit again soon with family and friends. I would definitely recommend a visit for those who are interested in history.

We need to continue to remember the past. This camp had a lot of history. One thing is that when slave law was changed for recruitment, if a slave enlisted, his family was then free.

screaming Icepony

Such a peaceful place. Grass/dirt trails with interpretation boards along the way. A museum featuring a 17- minute video giving the history of the park, a former supply depot for the Union in the Civil War. One building from the camp still stands and can be toured. There is no fee, but donations are very helpful. Park is close to being registered as a national monument.

This is an unforgotten Civil War site .. Most kentuckians don't even know about it. During the was it served several purposes. It was depot to distribute and fix guns, cannons etc. Shipped food off to Army Corps, Was a very large hospital and convalescent site. It was also was the 3rd largest recuritemetn center for black soldiers. The museum is fascinating. and the grounds are idyllic Spend the time and go You won't be disappointed.
