REVIEWS OF Ashland - The Henry Clay Estate IN Kentucky

Cherie Austin

It was a nice way to finish our day. We went on the house tour and self tour of garden. We learned interesting things about the family and home. A beautiful home. We were there about 1 hour and 45 minutes plenty of time to see and learn history of the home.

Tanya Kirker

Interesting, but I need to come back to visit the gardens. Being March, they weren't ready yet.

Toby Chandler

Great plane to learn local and commonwealth history.

Annie Golden

Great tour guide. So well spoken & knowledgeable. Will revisit once I read up on Mr Clay. Property very well taken care of. Love walking the grounds.

Ronald Coomer

Nice place. Spent almost a half a day here.

Rick Myers

This house sits on the remains of Ashland. What is left of the estate of Henry Clay. However Henry Clay never lived in this house. The original structure was razed by his sun and a new house was built on the original foundation. The interior has been modified here and there and decorated in a way that someone believes Henry Clay might have had it done. The grounds are very well kept and the gardens are beautiful.

Tushar Gupta

A beautiful place in summer. Easy trails in the city surrounded by lush green trees.

Stephen Wiggins

Fun place to hear music and go to shows

Taylor Hurt

Beautiful trees here.

Tracey Dillon

Very interesting to see I'll go back.

Griffin VanMeter

This a great place for people of all ages and interests. The estate is beautiful and the curators have done a fantastic job of displaying the storied life of Henry Clay, one of Kentucky's most prominent citizens. For a special treat make sure to go in May when all of the peonies are in bloom-- not to be missed.

Merry Indiana

Our guide Mr. McDowell was very knowledgeable and generous with his time. We thank him. The house and grounds are beautifully kept. The genealogy of the family got a bit confusing but there is nothing to be done for that! Thank you for the wonderful day.

Hans Fischer

It's pokemon paradise. There is a pretty cool old house there too.

Charlie Cowling

Beautiful historic home of a famous, but somewhat neglected, American statesman.

Poke Ayden

This is a nice place to just wander the grounds and enjoy nature.

Very nice place to visit and take family who come in town. Beautiful part of history.

Jerry Amos

A wonderful break from highway hypnosis. A short drive off of I-75 for a beautiful and educational place to stretch the legs.

John R.

Fantastic place to visit for a history lesson or refresher. The tour guides are very knowledgeable about the life and times of one Henry Clay, one of the greatest statesmen in our Nation's history! Definitely worth the price of admission.

Coffee Mood

This estate is a joy to visit for multiple reasons: The trees and trails across the land make this location ideal for nature walks; even in the city. The history and architecture are intriguing to even the most novice historian. Don't see any playgrounds? Not to worry. The children can take advantage of the numerous Pokemon Go "Poke-stops" and "Gyms" within a close proximity across the estate.

Vanesa Surtzy

Good estate.

Chevalier Seretto

I didn't know much about Henry Clay before this visit, but I sure do now! Have been to lots of historic mansions, but this one is notable in that most of the furniture and furnishings (artwork, china, knick knacks, etc) are ORIGINAL! Well worth it for the enthusiast of history, architecture and also horse racing since Henry Clay was one of the first to import Throroughbred champions from England to improve Kentucky stock back in the early 1800s.

Cathy Gill

amy lynne

Lucy Oliver Kyler

Beautifully historic and incredible information about one of Kentucky's finest statesmen.

Aaron Dodds

The grounds and house was amazing. We visited in the rain and it was still a worthwhile trip. Reasonably priced and very informative. Biggest disappointment was that the house is actually a rebuild by Henry Clay's children in the mid1800s. They are very open about the rebuild, and the floor plan is the same; yet it's just a bit sad that you aren't walking in the exact footsteps of Clay. However, so many artifacts of Clay are visible and some are recognizable from paintings and pictures of Clay. Would revisit the house in a heartbeat

Alicia Campbell

Beautiful grounds right in the heart if downtown Lexington

Caleb May

My kids and I loved Ashland! We didn't know much about Henry Clay prior to our visit and we very much enjoyed the tour of this beautiful historic home and walking through the garden and around the grounds. This is a must see in Lexington!

Very interesting historical site and love to learn more about the history of Lexington.

Woody Zorn

This is such a historically intense tour. The docents really know their stuff.

Jeannie Sorell

Fun tour!!

Michael Redman

Great Christmas event. Super busy but docents kept things moving with cheer and insight. An important figure in American history. I'll be back again when crowd is thinner and I have time to savor the experience. Some unusual architecture. Loved Clay's domed study and hear that concerts on the lawn are enjoyable.

Aaron Guest

I have lived across from this place for years. I am glad I finally went. I had no idea it was so large and had so many different parts. It is without a doubt a place that I am going to head over to more to study and relax. You should take a walk along the gardens or on some of the other walking trials. The inside of the house is great on the tour as well.

Ruth Atwater

Awesome!

Debra B

Great place to walk around and see history in the process.

Amanda Simmerman

Such a beautiful place! I thought it was a little over priced to walk through it.

Ellen Lyng

Wish we would have had the time to tour, but the women in Clay's life exhibit and the garden in progress were definitely worth the stop.

Rob Moye

Very interesting estate. Wish we time for tour. One of the great orators of his day.

Heather Rayl

The Henry Clay Estate is a must see if visiting Lexington. No time for a tour, no problem. Walk around the grounds for free. With a cafe on sight, just site and take in the summer air. Visit and sit in the gardens or take a walk along the grass trail on site. If you get a chance take a tour of the Estate. The tour last an hour and the tour guides are very informed. Our tour guide (Lillian, I believe) was very friendly and knew alot. Not only did she recall a lot of the history, but she even mentioned anything learned from other tour groups. She didn't rush anyone off after the tour. She took her time and talked to everyone. Even while I was tour the grounds before leaving she stopped and talked to me a little bit. It is nice to actually be able to take your time and take everything in. The only down side is after touring the Mary Todd Lincoln house, they do not allow you in the rooms like the MTL tours. They block off sections with causes crampness trying to get everyone a chance to see the rooms.

Elliott Hofe

It's beautiful, especially in spring. Very peaceful, though can be crowded when there's an event.

Sharyl Brzozowski

Very nice place to walk around and read about the history of the grounds. You can pay for a tour of the house itself and hear the history of Henry Clay.

Seth Parker

Beautiful place to have a picnic.

Beth Rosdatter

Peonies are fantastic right now! Also beautiful the rest of the year.

Clelie Bourne

Lovely recreation of the Home of one of Kentucky's premier statesmen. Lots of history to be learned here, not to mention the beautiful garden and grounds.

Marilee Varner

Best place to walk your sweet dog!

Beth Scott

We learned so much on the tour, and the grounds were beautiful. A must visit!

John Rakestraw

I grew up two blocks away on slashes rd. Henry clay was once known as the " mill boy of slashes." thats where he is from. The magnitude of this man is lost on the present age. This is the best place in lexington. Oh, check out his garden on the estate.

Cortex_v2

Nice place full of people who know exactly what they are doing. Nice piece of history.

Sharon Feifer

Absolutely lived the tour.

Doug R

Nicely preserved historical estate of an early statesman from US history.

Shannon Cutshall

Great tour. Knowledgable guide. Beautiful house and grounds. Great piece of history. No admittance charge. Affordable tour price. Small cafe in old smokehouse with outdoor seating.

Don Andrews

Tour guide was not very knowledgeable. Nothing is real about the house...this is not even the house Henry Clay lived in.

Pamela Trautner

Beautiful estate of Kentucky's greatest statesman--the great compromiser. An oasis in town with beautiful gardens.

Nancy Swanson

Our tour was certainly not worth the money. Our guide seemed somewhat confused and was not a good guide. Could have been much more interesting I'm sure.

NEWELL CLIFTON

Excellent 1 hr tour by Marilyn

C Lance Frazier

Nice tour in the summertime. Be sure to take in the walled garden. Too bad that Henry Clay's original house was razed to build this rendition.

Ryan Lewis

Great tour, great guide and great information on an important historical figure that has a legacy relevant to today.

Albert Family Farms

Pricey guided tour. Skipped that part, but enjoyed the free outdoors.

John Lewis

What a great tour every hour. You will learn so much about the region not only Henery Clay.

Charles Ford

Wonderful place to learn about the start of our country's history. We hope to return when reenactors are on site and get their perspective of what life might have been like in the time period.

Michael Baker

Beautiful italianate home. We too the guided tour very informative.

Markus Brown

Nice place to visit very peaceful.

Kate Mulhearn

Great experience. Henry Clay was an important part of American history and Ashland gives the visitor an excellent picture of who he was.

Locked thecat

Nice park like grounds, some educational historic features to explore outside. The house has a great history and is very petty. The tour of the house is not very good for small children but the grounds are very nice in the spring and summer with flowers in bloom.

Kim Konuch

Nice tour of Ashland. Not to long, or to short. Wish the young lady leading the tour was a little more excited about what she was doing but overall an informative tour about Henry Clay.

Stephanie Sparks

Ashland garden is one of my favorite spots to sit and work or just walk around and enjoy the beautiful flowers.

Dana Lynn

Informative tour, beautiful estate and an interesting part of history.

Roma Hibbs

The outside of Henry Clay museum with all the beautiful trees we walked around for hours looking at all the beautiful colors on the trees so great place to visit

Derrick Thomas

Nice window into the historical past of fledgling America.

Bryan Cox

Great historical tour tour by knowledgeable guides

Margaret Nichols

We enjoyed our visit here. It was interesting learning out Henry Clay. We took the guided tour. It was great. I remembered a picture of him in my history book way back when, but really didn't remember too much about him. Friend didn't remember anything about him. Anyhow, the place is very interesting to visit. Love to tour old estates like this one and learn about our history. Worth a visit if you have some time.

Zachary Tresp

I have been wanting to visit Ashland since high school us history class. My teacher loved Henry Clay and we grew up learning to admire him. It was one of the prettiest places. If you go early before opening it is quiet and you have the whole park to yourself. On my next visit I want to be sure to go during open hours to tour inside. Peaceful spot for breakfast in the park.

Shawn Taylor

Always a nice place to walk, visit the historic home, plenty of parking

Joel Worcester

Very nice tour of an interesting place. The grounds are beautiful and the home ornate. I was a bit disappointed that the staff had no knowledge of the source of the building materials or the methods either.

Roger Harrington

Great tour guide. Emjoyed it a lot.

Pang Hartman

The tour here is amazing, but I love the grounds in general especially during the holidays. The staff is also amazing. They put up signs encouraging Pokemon Go players to partake in the park and to be responsible in doing so. For PoGo players, this spot is spectacular. There are 3 gyms in a very small area and approximately 8 Pokestops. As far as the tour, the life and history of Henry Clay is fascinating, and the house is in wonderful shape. If you live in Lexington, make sure you take the tour!

Michael Rogers

A little slice of heaven in downtown Lexington.

Ian Tallon

Had an opportunity to visit during a hemp industry event and was really excited to see dried hemp bundles. Definitely a step back in time and we'll worth a tour!

Karen T

Only walked the grounds, but they are well-maintained and the signeage was nice! It was fun to walk around and learn about the various out buildings and see the garden. I hope to return and go through the museum sometime.

Robin Castle

Wonderful place to visit a piece of history. Tour guide was very knowledgeable and engaging.

Patricia Curran

Original decor, beautifully kept

Cheyenne Whitted

Lovely home and grounds. Very informative tour!

Richard Mumford

Fun vibe good food.

David Barber

Great tour and very interesting. we learned a lot about Henry Clay.

A Trewqitty

Henry Clay is interesting, so it's a shame the guide spent most of the time droning on about his grand nieces, etc. This would be a great tour if you're from Lexington and obsessed with the local social scene, but it's not so interesting if you want to expand your understanding of Henry Clay's place in American history.

Lacey Nguyen

Sooo beautiful and well kept. One of my favorite places to go

Paul Walaszek

It is a beautiful slice of American history.

Adam Ray

Very interesting!

Luke Richardson

Rich history & beautiful house! Unfortunately the second floor isn’t wheelchair accessible.

Dennis Simpson

An amazing step back in history to see the real Ashland ... Can't say enough good things about it... Great tour... Could have spent all day... Thankful for people who make things like this possible and preserve our history

Rebecca Haynes

This is a beautiful, privately owned park. It is free to walk in the park, but one must park on the street after hours. There are well-maintained mulched paths and a beautiful garden. There is a small charge for touring the house and other buildings. The park has a beautiful, very extensive collection of peonies, which is a must-see in the spring. There is no charge for touring the peony gardens.

Bill

Thanks to Hurricane Florence we had to replant a wedding in a few days and the estate is where we landed. Besides the Kentucky humidity, it was a great choice. Beautiful setting, accommodating staff, and a Great wedding for my little girl!!

Daniel Collins

Love it. Such a nice place to walk.

Herbert Lynn

Beautiful and historic estate close to downtown. Excellent for an afternoon of picnics, frisbee, or playing with the dog. Plenty of historical markers for history buffs, ghost stories for the fans of the Paranormal, and naturalists will appreciate the marked trees.

Jonas Ladekjaer

Haven't visited the museum or received a tour, but the grounds are very well kept and a nice area for a walk. I go here almost every morning to practice qigong, and they offer community yoga on sundays on the main lawn.

Susan Dills

Excellent tour of a home with many authentic treasures of Henry Clay. Be sure to take time to explore the out buildings and enjoy the paths meandering through the estate.

alice hamilton

Wonderful house, grounds and history.

Lisa Armstrong

Very interesting place. It's worth it to pay the $12.00 for the 90 minute tour of the mansion.

Timothy Spence

A great place to visit if you are into early American history. The staff at the Estate are very friendly and able to answer nearly all questions you ask them regarding Mr. Clay. My only complaint is not being able to take photographs while on the tour of the house, otherwise a great experience.

J Woo

awesome little park comprised of the Henry Clay Mansion and surrounding grounds. a nice place to read a book in the summer time. make sure and checkout the flower garden.
