REVIEWS OF Pawnee Indian Museum State Historic Site IN Kansas

Nick Rhodes

This is a real hidden gem for anyone that is interested in Native American and Plains Indian history. It's especially cool that the site is built over an actual Pawnee village and the way the museum is tastefully incorporated into the archaeological site. It's pretty neat to stand at the site and imagine what the people must have been doing there.

Gerald Sagebrush Allmer

When I visited this museum I was simply amazed by the care taken to preserve as much as possible of a village that was probably 25,000 members or more. It was well worth the visit. In fact I mentioned it in my journal that I hope some day will be published. A'ho Tsalagii Cha gon Cherokee Sagebrush

$6/person. Not much to see, but interesting storytelling by caretaker lady. Be sure to listen to audio boxes for stories from old pawnee people talking about their life.

Pawnee Indian Museum is a Must for those interesting in the Native American culture and its rich early history, and well worth the trip, with ample parking. The museum has some gifts such as books, T-shirts and post cards for sale, and the caretaker is a very knowledgeable, helpful, warm, friendly & one heck of a guy :) The displays are very well organized & of much interest. At the site are the remains of a village once occupied by the Kitkehahki, or Republican, band of the Pawnee tribe of Native Americans. It is one of four known Kitkehahki sites in the Republican River valley. The dates of occupation of this particular village are not known, the Kitkehahki occupied the Republican valley from the 1770s to about the 1830s. A museum was constructed around one of the earth lodges prior to its excavation; the excavated lodge has been left open, with many artifacts left in place.

A little of the beaten path but well worth the stop. The guide was very informative and very friendly. This is a must see for anyone interested in Native American life. Be careful when mapping this with a GPS or any mapping software, its off by about 5 miles. Follow the signs and you should be just fine.

Malik Koehler

This is a small and out of the way area. However, the thing that made this experience worth it is the man behind the counter. The man was very enthused and knowledgable. Conversation with him was very pleasant and he genuinely made it an enjoyable experience.
