REVIEWS OF Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art IN Kansas

Elizabeth Gatlin

This museum is small and funky but well worth the visit. I wasn't thrilled when my son insisted we leave the Nelson Atkins to check it out, but I am so glad we did! Very refreshing change of pace. We especially enjoyed the interactive room with thought provoking questions to ponder and discuss. This would be a great place to bring kids who might not be up to huge museum full of very old art.

Robert Griesedieck

Fun little art museum, funky exhibit UFO.. very friendly staff and great gift shop

Pamela Poag

Nice atmosphere. Good parking. Easy to get around.

Yvette Dean

E-clectic 2018 performed there & dinner was served along with a bar. Staff was friendly, dinner good with great service.

Kassy Wills

Neat place to visit and see some different art!

Uncle Fred

Nice venue for contemporary art, a little small but it's free! Good food at the restaurant and excellent service, not too easy to hear inside the restaurant.

JoyA Piazza

Always a great place to visit.

Loretta Schamberger

Loved the artwork in the lobby and their little bar. The building is beautiful and the parking was easy.

Cici Davis

I like the location and I loved the sculptures, but i did not realize the gallery was used for political statements and protests. I mean, the artwork was beautiful and very well done, but sometimes art helps us escape the troubles of the outside world. It was a wonderful representation, and very moving, but definitely falsely advertised.

Khat hat

small but so cool! def a must see

Meredith Elston

When we visited last week- the exhibits were phenomenal. Awesome curation of relevance and quality.

Janos Perkins

The sculptures outside the museum led us inside with visual contemplation. The interior was small and I would have like to see more, but there was limited space. There is a cafe inside and to see some of the works, you had to wander through the cafe, which was a little distracting, but I guess if you were seated, eating, it was nice to look at all of the works of art. Very nice diversity.

Kim Rush

A small museum dedicated to contemporary art just down the street from the Nelson. With rotating exhibits and local artists, it's well worth a couple hours of your time.

Interesting exhibits and private collections. Nice gift shop but you must eat at the cafe Sebastian. Unbelievable menu locally sourced. The spaghetti squash with spinach and roasted tomatoes was delicious!

Michael Foster

Fresh upbeat and everything contemporary

Frent Wood

This is our first time there and we had great time.

Desiree Long

Wonderful museum. Very open. Interesting exhibits that change frequently. Interpretation is helpful and not overwhelming. Staff is courteous.

Louisa Lamkin

I was surprised by how limited the exhibits were

George Edge

The structures are incredible, it's really worth visiting this place.

Elizabeth Gatlin

Denise Murphy

This place has great arts and great exhibits. But the real reason I go there is for the food in the restaurant. It is excellent, they have great specials, and you should try the reuben sandwich if you really want to be wild. Sorry, but that's the truth. I go there for the food!

Masked_Kitty

I'm Sorry but it was quite boring for a Kid. I think you guys should add something for kids to do like draw something and put it on the walls or something other than that it was entertaining but boring at the same time.

Hajji Hinds

Fantastic display of art from Nkame. The rest of the museum contain interesting pieces as well. Foil art, and a room full of photos of women in history.

Tom Miller

I went with friends to the Italian movie festival on 4 Thursday nights.

Madelynn Boyts

It was neat. Definitely what you'd expect from an art museum.

Liz McNay

I love museums. The Kemper is one of the best Art Museums in the Midwest, if not the world. The events held there are beautiful experiences. Please check both regularly and often to see what events are scheduled. I've never been disappointed by a visit to the Kemper. I strongly recommend that anyone that enjoys art make this a destination as soon as possible. Reviews DO matter. I encourage everyone to use this platform to express their opinions.

Meghan Lehman

This is the second year we have held our office holiday party at the museum. Betty and her team do a spectacular job. New chef this year knocked it out of the park! Wonderful place to have an event among phenomenal art.

Becky Rosazza

Always enjoy my favorite art museum!

Liz Hicks

Quality at a great price: FREE! Art is varied, including LOCAL artists! Docents welcome you in and, for our experiences, are helpful and friendly. If you haven't stopped by - what are you waiting for?? Seriously? Enjoy a slice of KC that improves your cultural sensibilities AND is enjoyable!

John Wheby

This is a must visit, if you are in Kansas City and enjoy contemporary art. Lots of great pieces and can all be viewed within 2 hours. Very nice on-site restaurant and free parking is available.

Elisabeth Spillman

I love this place so much. I need to visit more. Touring exhibits never disappoint.

Alan Doyal

The artists care more about shaking up the establishment than actually making anything of worth. The staff however were quite pleasant.

Kaulah Fielder-Bey

My first trip here was a couple of weeks ago, since then I've been back 3 times for events, my family is scheduled to be back for another six months. The artwork is moving, the music events stir your soul to the point of tears. I made it a girl's day out which included a performance from here. Although they were quietly restless, my eldest daughter said it was one of the best days of her life. She loved every minute of it. I love this museum because it shows that even the unexpected can be art and truly beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Each one of us were able to take something different from each piece, and that is what made it beautiful.

Jean-Paul Courneya

Stunning visuals. Small and good to see in an afternoon. I recommend a Sunday

Connie Hsu

The place is smaller for a museum. But good collection of arts. The gift shop has a lot of fun choices for arts and for gifts. I think I end up spend more time at the shop than the museum.

Deric Armstrong

Went for the lawn showing of Never Ending Story. Cute and fun. The reason I gave low stars is the art gallery. More concerned with conception than art. The showcases were bland, obviously reaching for the elusive artist, but lacking, embarrassingly. Shame.

Anne Stark

Small but exquisite collection.

Shá D.

Very small, but nice art inside.

Lydia McEvoy Clay County Collector of Revenue

Rachelle (of Carpet Corner fame) was an amazing guide! This place makes you think outside the box.

Paul Johnson

Awesome but kinda upity

Rachel Taylor

Very nice, but small gallery. Didn't give 5 stars because when we visited half of the museum was closed off due to setting up an exhibit.

Dominique Benning

This place was recommended by a friend for a Sunday brunch. This place was good with excellent service. But the prices were expensive for what you get. You get just enough to appease your appetite. Though the food was good, but I won't be back.

Zeal Zillner

I absolutely love the art there... This place is very unique... Not to big.. Not to small.. Soul touching in every aspect that my heart feels and yearns for... Gives me goosebumps... At the intensity of how I felt at the exhibit that I just saw... WOW...

Dakota Niederhauser

Great museum always switching it up, wonderful exhibits. A must see

Lynda J Leonard

Always something interesting and enjoyable to view. An easy, quick stop that turns into an hour or more when I need an 'art' fix.

Delphine C

Very cool art museum

Lauren Zabaneh

Brunch was delicious at the cafe inside the museum. Both my husband and I have dietary restrictions that make ordering difficult at times. We had the kindest server who took her time with us and communicated with the kitchen, who went above and beyond for us, exactly what we needed. Best part of the cafe was the incredible walls. All the artwork was commissioned specifically for the restaurant and done all by one artist. Its dazzling. Feast for the eyes. I only gave 4 stars because as far as the museum goes it's small. I was disappointed. BUT the art that was there was very interesting and thought-provoking.

Jay Betts

A beautiful Gallery with well curated pieces. Knowledge staff was very helpful. Food and dining could use more support but should not deter Art lovers from the Amazing pieces on exhibit

Oscar Lopez

While it is on the smaller side there is still much to be enjoyed here. Beautiful exhibits line the walls of such variety and creativity you will not be let down. Whether you live in Kansas or are just visiting this place is a must see.

Symone Martin

A quiet kept secret in KC. Intimate and beautiful space with interesting exhibits... and Cafe Sebastian's food is absolutely delecrable.

Brenda Cushing

One of the best contemporary art museums in Kansas City.

Rylee Talbot

Absolitely love this place

Al Risden

The location was easy to see from the main road. You can park at various locations and there is a large parking lot to the north of the buildings related to the art district. The building is uniquely engineered, very interesting designed. The exhibits are placed so that you can stand next to, sit down near or just walk by. There are volunteers available if needed and a help desk right inside the main entrance.

John Jones

None better in the metro.

Brett Bussart

Went to a wedding here. The catering company was good. Food was good. The Art exhibit was very modern and gratuitously nude. Not my style, but to each their own. Was a very good venue for a wedding.

Micah J

Great place, but a little on the small side. Free admission however! We enjoyed it!

Lola Basic

Love this place. A smaller museum that's manageable for a shorter time frame. The building itself is a work of art and full of light. The collection features a temporary exhibition as well as permanent pieces. And a pleasant cafe with a coveted courtyard will complete the experience. Always enjoyed this place, whether with family, friends or a date.

Alex Mjos

Honestly not sure how the ratings are so high here. It was pretty lame and very small.

Moore Family

The Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art is one of the most amazing art museums I have ever had the opportunity to visit. They hold a wide variety of beautiful contemporary art that can inspire and fascinate anyone's mind. I am proud that this museum can call my Kansas City Home. I would highly recommend this museum for anyone who loves the arts, or anyone who wants to see a trademark jewl of Kansas City. The Kemper has fun and enriching art programs that all ages can enjoy, along with a wonderful restaurant that serves delicious food in a beautiful glass atrium. This is an amazing museum that you should come and check out!

William Garner

Was great

Jay Betts

A beautiful Gallery with well curated pieces. Knowledge staff was very helpful. Food and dining could use more support but should not deter Art lovers from the Amazing pieces on exhibit

Bridgitte Weaver

Very interesting pieces.

Madeline Holder

It's a small art museum, which I understand because it's free. The art however was terrible and I didn't like most of it, but maybe it's because I'm not a hipster...

Dr. Steven Reece

Never fails to impress!

Kimberly Flores Smith

Beautiful collection a put together very well.

Lillian Mihal

Always an interesting experience. I love that they do kid avtivites at noon on Saturdays.

Michiel Buitelaar

Excellent little museum. Small, relaxed, beautiful, friendly. Some really nice things in there too (though part of the main collection was not accessible). Nice restaurant too. Good food.

Scott Rice

Small for a museum but very nice. Staff was great and the displays all interesting.

Keif Hampton

Fantabulous gallery that is perfect for a daytime adventure or on the weekend. Definitely worth the visit and a nice change of pace after The Nelson too!

A Milk Man

I found my favorite, what is yours?

Lauren Pope

Beautiful and ever-changing selection of contemporary art, much by artists who have some connection to Kansas City. The docents are knowledgeable and helpful, and the entire space is light-filled and lovely. Stop into the cafe for a seasonal menu that is absolutely delicious. Highly recommended for a day out or a date night.

Melissa Reyerson

We stopped here on our visit to KC. A very small place but free and full of cool art. Next to the bigger art museum so worth the quick walk over here.

Benton Robinson

Very small museum. It only had a few rooms. It was quite and much of the art was very impressive.

lisa dimond

Went here for a field trip. The docents were very good with children. Beautiful, calm, welcoming space.

Charlee Thompson

Place was beautiful! Definitely recommend it for any art lovers!

Sheri Koger

It was small but great use of space..loved the photography area and the gift shop had unique and interesting items!!!

Aneva Hiser

Nice museum but so small. Especially when one of the five rooms is closed. However I will return to see the new display. The new exhibits on a frequent basis is also a plus. Just wish it was bigger

Daniel Forbes

Was there for a wedding. Terrible venue for a wedding. I'd never go there again for a wedding or the art.

Jay Savage

Beautiful artwork. Many thought-provoking masterpieces.

Mary Terrien

Advertised as kid friendly. IT IS NOT!!! It has a room for kids to do art work. However as we walked through it was obvious by employees we were not welcome. Received very dirty looks as we walked through. I will not be back. ( my daughter is almost 4) Do not advertise kid friendly if its false.

John Niemira

Great, nice lunch also.

Ahmad Gates

I love the art! Some intriguing pieces. The only thing that would make it better is if the museum was bigger.

Truth Hurts

Nice part of town. Small museum. Staff/volunteers? Hung out in groups and offered nothing.

Bernard Schuster

Usually I love to go to this museum... which often has the potential to open your eyes! This time it was a rough visit though. The major gallery was closed while they installed a new exhibit. One of the guards made a loud speech about how that job was beneath him... and then him and another guard started staring at visitors and then whispering like they were judging an bad-mouthing them. That was a weird thing to observe because normally that museum is really nice and very professional. It is free to visit.

Oscar Lopez

Dustin Redland

During my trip and visit to the city I was a visitor to the kemper museum. I really enjoyed the ambiance in the building, it's a welcoming walk. The staff was friendly, kind, patient and human. I was comfortable to be here, comfortable to walk around and look at art and ask the staff any questions we had. It was great seeing my niece really enjoy herself here in the gallery. She even participated in their children's activities and had a great time. I really enjoyed the different stories in the art pieces, so many different mediums and styles, it's definitely diverse and interesting from door to door.

Miriam Feldhausen

Small gallery space, but the curators keep stunning and thought provoking exhibits in rotation. There is no admission charge to enter, and you'll find a pricey, but delicious brunch served at the restaurant inside on Sundays. If you're looking for a fun morning/afternoon in Kansas City, this should be one of your stops. My only reason for 4 stars is because many (though not all) of the art pieces lack an artist's statement on the placard, which causes the art piece to lose context and meaning for visitors. It would be nice to see more info posted on some of the larger installation pieces.

Demetria Ortega

Very small “show rooms”, there were not many exhibits to view and the atmosphere was completely uninviting, due to the staff acting as if they were bothered and did not want to be there. I can tell one staff member was extremely bored when as soon as my husband and I went to view the boats, he skipped in there behind us and told my husband “ You’re too close”, we had barely set our eyes on the piece. Very unwelcoming place unless you are wearing oversized jewelry, with your nose in the air. The Nelson Atkins Museum is amazing. Do not waste your time at Kemper Museum, you will be in and out in less than 30 minutes.

Antony Alapatt

Good quality art, but the entire museum can be covered in half-hour or less. Don't worry, Nelson atkins is two blocks away!

Scott Grenerth

A very nice Contemporary Art Museum. There was a nice variety of displays. The art ranged from the very abstract to the much more approachable. It was great to see local artists featured as well as women and African American artists. My favorite exhibit was actually the cafe. That's a spot I would not miss.

Ann Vargas

Lovely place and people. The gift shop is great! Can't wait to go back and eat at the cafe

Jessie Mehl

Very disappointing. Quite small, few exhibits and unwelcoming staff. It seemed to exist solely for the purpose of giving women of means a place to lunch and be seen. I had hoped that it would be on the order of the Walker in Minneapolis, but smaller. Just very disappointed.

Suzi Howe

Great local art! Peaceful, diverse, and challenging!

BASSHEAD GAMER

Great art

George Baker

It's a little small, but still has great art

Victoria Zagliada

People who work there very nice and helpful. Clean. From pictures I assumed it was all day adventure. I was wrong. Total time to view everything 30 min, you may add 1,5-2 hours if you read postings. Very small. Try food ! it was best salad I ever had :)

Brooke H.

Great museum, just wish there was more to see. We went through the whole thing in 30 minutes, even with reading descriptions. Would recommend if you need a quick art fix!

joseph jones lv

Beautiful Art really layed back place a must see!!!!!

David Stewart

Great stop to your day trip

Ruben Hinojosa

Usually displays very interesting pieces of art.

Great collection and interesting building. The staff is very cheerful.

I am just writing this review after an initial visit to this location. I am not looking to change or sway anyone’s personal opinions and my intention is not to offend. I really just wish to let you know of my personal experience and feelings given this establishment. Thanks for reading!

Celeste Lupercio

I love the Kemper. Their exhibits are so unique. If you have the time, definitely eat at their cafe!

Lisa Donovan

Well its one of the smallest museums I have ever been in. It is FREE but there is a box that donations can be put in. Great place to go on a rainy day.

Cynthia Davis

Fascinating

Patricia Greenfield Brown

Really enjoyed the museum, but was a bit disappointed in the restaurant menu, with the new chef. Love the restaurant atmosphere, though but will return.

David Rosazza

One of my favorite museums ever. Wonderful size, free and always cool exhibits. Both permanent and rotating. They also have a very well regarded restaurant that everyone recommends. We make this a must do every time we are in Kansas City. You won't be disappointed

Lacey Patton

A beautiful and amazing museum. I was very impressed and I love the colored pencils I bought at the gift shop

Amy Kean

Very cool building with a unique collection. Definitely worth a visit!

Cyndy Harnett

Free museum of contemporary art. Small so no guide to the exhibitions which is why 4 stars. Restaurant has vegetarian dishes. Well worth a visit.

Phill Lichtenbert

Nice museum with a handful of neat exhibits

Leni Konstas

Free admission, with a small free lot behind the building. Definitely small, but worth a visit.

Darren Rippee

The experience of this museum is made by the docents, who are very kind and knowledgeable about the displays. I recommend going to one of their guided events if you have a love for contemporary art.

Joel Snyder

The Kemper Museum of Modern Art is one of the places that I was able to take my daughter, myself and my mom to when I was able to visit Kansas City in October of 2018. My mom is now living in Kansas City right now. My grandma Cramer also lives west of my mom in Overland Park, KS. I didn't take any photos of the Kemper Museum of Modern Art, but if you'd like to take a visit to Kansas City for a vacation day from your place where you currently live in right now, please consider going to the Kemper Museum of Modern Art is one of the places that you should consider going. I didn't take any photos when I was in Kansas City in October of 2018, please consider going to the Kansas City Zoo and to the Kemper while you're able to visit Kansas City (if you're able to come to Kansas City during the winter, then please reconsider going to the Kansas City Zoo...)

janine cole

The wedding was beautiful and food was perfect. Still trying to understand some of the art.

dujuan dowdy

I've lived in this city all my life and have traveled the world. I have never seen this area and was amazed by it's powerful art. The artist and students are incredible. Walk around the whole area at a slow pace with a drink and enjoy

Tiffany De Leon

I love seeing other views. Art isn't just colors, it's feelings and emotions. This museum has different rooms that feel like walking into different realms. It's quiet and relaxing. Thank you for sharing you art with us.

Erick Salnave

Great small museum with great contemporary art

Andy Meyerhofer

Great people very friendly very customer service oriented trying to help wonderful experience Modern Art smaller collection but definitely wonderful place

Joe Musha

Super disappointed with the breadth of art. We were inundated with some artist who was horrible and naked... and not in the good way. We left feeling violated and frustrated. If there was more to balance out the naked woman, we would've been happy.

Angela Crawford

A great addition to the KC arts scene. It's small, so you can get your visit in quickly.

Joshua Nider

Elegant building and fascinating collections. I appreciate the lack of any censorship in the pieces, and the more adult-centric collections are labelled as such. Lovely little shop with locally made art and jewelry as well. The restaurant was closed the day I went but I will certainly be checking it out next time I'm around.

Aaron Boender

Cool art and it is FREE!

Max Sayler

Excellent food, process and atmosphere

Ken Moberg

Always something different

A

Really awesome museum. It’s small compared to the Nelson-Atkins but definitely worth a visit. Make sure to check out the art in the museum cafe.

Joshua Madden

Good art and another great way Kansas City is a leader in the arts.

Sean Taylor

I love this little museum. Such a grand collection, in such a great setting. I think the best description is that while walking through I see this little painting in a far corner. It's a David Hockney. It was like; "oh, we had this little space in the corner and we thought we'd brighten it up with this little Hockney." Just charming.

Kathy Moore

The Kemper is small and gorgeous providing a personal, engaging experience. The open feel of the museum and cafe provides for natural light and changing exhibits. It all felt bright and inviting even when contemporary art isn’t my usual go to. This is the perfect, intimate museum, not crowded that makes the experience so worthwhile. The art on display was interesting too. Do not miss the huge mural in the cafe and the cafe walls filled with edge to edge art done on site by one artist. And it is all free.

Mario Christianto

Pro: free admission, fairly interesting works (if modern art is your thing), cool cafe with paintings on the wall, located near other museums so you can hot several museums on the same day Con: somewhat smaller in size compared to the bigwigs of modern art museum.

Laura Vescovi

Great spaces and great art!

Michael Torok

Great art with extensive explanations about artists, inspirations, and mediums. Really was a pleasure to see such artistic giants so close up and personal.

Kelli Webb

Loved it!

Stephanie Simmons

We are so lucky to have such a great gallery!

Madame Maceline

An awesome experience from the beginning of my tours as a tourist to the very end. Very nice staffers to welcome and assist. Good job Kemper Museum thank you

Brian Huggins

Amazing modern art and world class quizine

Clara Murphy

Love the art here! They have create your own art areas and my nephews loved it! They had books to read related to the art, a felt table to re-create the art you just saw. My youngest nephew loved this, they have a cute gift shop and a restaurant as well! Highly recommend stopping in if you’re near the Nelson looking for something else to do! It’s free as well!!!

Jeremiah Preston

Great place to see some contemporary art. It's free, but please throw a few dollars in the donation box to help keep it that way.

Contemporary art isn't much of my taste, but the architecture of this place is beautiful and there is a piece of chulily art right above one of the entrances and it is breath-taking. I didn't get a chance to try the restaurant inside (the Sebastian), but it's worth a visit if you enjoy this type of art. My fiance and I stopped at a little local place called Crow's coffee and it was a nice way to spend an afternoon while on vacation in KC.

Michell K

Very small and the art is cool. I was underwhelmed. But if you have time, definitely check out the cafe. I had the lamb sandwich and the seasonal salad in a cute little atrium and that really made my day!

Kathy Moore

Smaller than the Nelson, but a great restaurant and nice contemporary art.

David Lieffring

Always enjoy to see what they have in rotation.

Organizing Downs Family

Loved it! Art is so fun, cafe inside is also super yummy.

Michael Spicer

A great collection that doesn't take too long to look at. The Cafe Sebastienne is incredible. The gift shop had some of the nicest and most helpful staff AND holds great gifts including an extensive art jewelry selection.

Dennis Wade

The staff was very cordial. The museum conveyed a very peaceful atmosphere.

Margaret Brede

Restaurant is great for lunch. Always good exhibits.

Lakresha Stewart

Nice Cafe Indoors with Art Surrounding the Walls

Kyle Gregg

It was ok for what it was. I personally am not a fan of Modern Art but my wife is. The building was nice and the restrooms were clean. We were going to eat at the little cafe that is inside but decided instead to pick a different place. Not because of anything wrong but just to try something a little different. The gift shop prices were way too high for the products they were offering. Otherwise it was a great find.

Dr. William Cavill

A must-see for anyone interested in art.

Sree Ranga Praveen Kumar Reddy Meenige

its good takes around 15 min to complete it . and it is free . very bright colors display some thing differ to see

The GodFather

They tend to use different exhibits over the year. I went for the nkame exhibit and it was beautiful. It felt like the art had a connection with me. It is beautiful

Draper Smith

Perfectly sized museum with fantastic, women focused collection and exhibits. Security staff were very nice! Highly recommend

Linda Wells

This modern art museum is a favorite because it is not overwhelming. There are usually around 3 exhibits that can be viewed in an hour or less. The store always has interesting things and the cafe is a nice place to get lunch or Sunday brunch. A plus? Parking is free.

Andrew Johnson

Wonderful museum and gallery!

Jessica Nelson

Very interesting exhibits & kid friendly!

Leanne Kubicz

A small yet engaging art museum. Louise Bourgeois' "Spider" stand proudly at the front of the museum. A little gem!

Ryan Townsend

Great little museum. It’s not intentionally kid friendly, but because it’s small, it’s a great place to take kids who don’t have the attention span for a larger museum. The exhibitions are thoughtful and visually pleasing. Also, the gift shop is one of the best places in the city for jewelry, ceramics and small stylish gift items.

Bill Ashley

Fascinating exhibits of art works

Neal Crosson-Hill

Somewhat large for a contemporary museum. There was an interesting short term exhibit in the main gallery, other areas had just a few, intentionally striking, pieces of permanent collection. Take the time to stroll around the building's exterior and enjoy the public art on display. The spiders by Louise Bourgeois at the entrance are a favorite of mine. I was heartbroken to hear that one was removed due to damage from someone climbing it. Please don't do this and call the the police directly if you see someone doing it. Such a shame that people can't respect that some things are here for everyone's enjoyment.

Wonderful contemporary art in a beautiful setting. Have great exhibitions on a regular basis.

Cool museum with a great restaurant inside. It’s small enough to see everything in an hour or so. They change the exhibits often enough to keep everything fresh.
