Going through the Kansas Aviation Museum was like being a time traveler. Beginning with Doc and all its amazing reconstruction one winds their way through a progression of airplanes ending out on the tarmac with newer representations of the industry. A person can take a self-guided tour but on hand are a number of pilots and professionals that are eager to answer all of your questions. Had we been able to gain entrance to the control tower it would have been a five-star visit.
Kansas Aviation Museum is a wonderful little museum created in the tower and administration building of an abandoned airbase. It highlights a large series of Cesna models built next door. As smaller number of Beachcraft models are also featured. The very complex radar system on the B-52 bomber was developed here and beautifully explained. A decommissioned B-52 is amongst many aircrafts on the grounds.
The old airport of awesome and the making/restoring process is really cool. The ceiling of the old airport has many cool symbols. Walking up to the planes is quite interesting, you can see in a couple of the planes partially, which is exciting! The kids room could have been really cool, but a lot of the simulators weren’t working while we were there. All of the history throughout the rooms were a bit dense and kind of hard to follow. I often felt lost what I was reading about in a given locations and why it was significant.
This used to be the "Main Airport" in Wichita. Many changes have taken place over the years. However, you just can't explain what it feels like to walk up to the "Tower" and see so much of Wichita, and they play the current Airport, (Eisenhower) in Wichita, the air traffic. They have so many planes to explore, some you can go inside of, others, you can view from the outside, but you still get this feeling of AWE!!!! They have a neat feature inside, a "Flight Sim" that is unlike anything you might have at home. This is something the younger children really love to get their hands on, and they are usually pretty good at it. You can even host events at this Museum. Please check it out.
Small museum with a lot of amazing displays. Being a huge fan of aviation, I never knew that Wichita was once the air capital of America. Worth the time
We are so happy we got to see the museum and are sorry we didn't get to take pictures as a lot was under renovation! Great for airplane buffs
For anybody interested in history, it's worth a visit. A couple hours here will provide you with an understanding of the close link between aviation and Wichita.
Really cool place.
Great place to see how aviation has been part of Wichita for several decades
Great little museum, good exhibits. Just wish there was more
Off you go into the wild blue yonder, if you want to learn about planes, their operation and construction this is the place to go. You'll need a minimum of 2 hours to see everything.
It was okay I was really expecting to see a lot more being that close to an air Force Base, which they seem to be very proud of being close to. The director of the facility has very little aviation knowledge you would think that someone with that title would be a pilot. I've been to a lot of aviation museums, this one was average
Helpful staff, excellent displays. The histories of the aircraft manufacturers were very interesting. The Buff was overwhelming.
Really fun place to visit. Has an amazing insight into aviation history with some really fun interactive exhibits.
I've been in Wichita for over 20 years and never been to this museum until recently. I was surprised on how good it turned out to be. It had several simulators that were a hit especially for the kids. It was winter when I went so only one Fed Ex airplane was open to go into. They said the others are open during the warmer weather. We also had guests from Canada who were with us and they really liked it. You can even go up to the control tower. I think they can add a few more things to it. Looked like there was plenty of space to do so.
Great history! A nice way to excited young aviators!
Enjoyed my time there it looks as though they have half the building closed off.
Very good museum in historic Wichita building.
Always a great time.
If you like planes it a great places to spend a couple hours. Great for kids too.
Great place to look through
We were there several years ago. This is a wonderful museum of the history of Wichita. Several restored small planes that are beautiful. Lots of for children. A B52 on the runway, starting restoration. That fave me chills to see the size of it. Knowing it has saved us ,to be a free country. Great place for young and old. The art deco is beautiful.
Very surprised how much there is to see! 6 year old loved it, and so did I! Even bought a membership so we can visit often.
The lady who helped us was very nice. The museum is interesting too.
Great collection of engines, a little run down and rough on the edges. But cool stuff
Lady, at the gift shop was very friendly and helpful.
It's okay i think we would of enjoyed it more but we went on a feild trip and they only let us see 2 things the whole time we were there and then said in order to see the rest of the museum you have to pay more and come back with your family. You mean i get it but after the feild trip my kids don't even want to go back we literally did nothing the entire time there. We might try again.
Great time with the kids. The out door displays were neat!
Very cool place, lots of interesting aviation history. Very helpful and knowledeable staff. Plus a play area for both kids and adults.
Great museum. Many unique displays
Great hands on for kids and adults.
Very few planes, not much to see. We're hobby pilots ourselves and were disappointed how small it was. The children area however was awesome, kids had a blast.
Great educational go to for rainy days
It was a chance to get up close and personal with planes and jets that are part of aviation history.
Nice small museum, they have some good displays and aircraft. It's preety cheap to visit so I think it's worth checking out.
Awesome! Well maintained and great aircraft exhibits both inside and outside. We were very pleased. The map of the outside planes up in the control tower needs to be updated. The arrangement had changed outside, so nothing matched the map any more. Better outside signs for the planes would be good too (they are attached to each aircraft and sometimes hard to find). Was very kid friendly. They had specific rooms/section designed for kids of all ages including an indoor playground, planes to play in and, for older kids, several computer aircraft simulator/flight programs. Aviation enthusiasts will enjoy it all!
This museum is awesome! The staff are very knowledgeable and the exhibits offer great information. The flight simulators are so much fun. We went for the Just Plane Fun event and loved getting to explore the inside of the different planes. It's great for all ages, too! My 3 year old enjoyed it as much as the adults.
Very cool place, they have activities and things for kids
This a place to explore the beginning of Aviation industry. It is a place worth to see.
Fun place for the family
Very friendly and great place
We had a lot of fun on the simulator. They need a better way to track whose turn it is. Tower was cool.
Great aviation history spot.
A great walk through the history of Aviation in Kansas. I highly recommend a stop here.
The kids love it, as I do too. Awesome history of the Wichita aviation industry and great views of the flight line and ramp areas of McConnell AFB
Very informative and interesting.
Loved this place
Nice museum
Pictures of the B-52 bomber don't do this aircraft any justice. This thing is enormous ... Great experience, very welcoming staff.
A terrific museum. The coolest part is being able to go into the old control tower and watch the airplanes take off from the Air Force Base next door. The architecture of the building is neat and going out onto the tarmac to look at the plains was fun.
Need to have food truck for people
Lots of great exhibits and history to share!!
An underappreciated gem. It's a little rough around the edges and a work in progress, but still worth a visit to get an understanding of aviation history in Wichita and beyond.
Awesome for the most part most of the planes are kinda dilapidated but kids had fun
Mike and Teresa were excellent tour guide's. The building alone is beautiful filled with amazing information about aviation. It's a fun "hands on" for kids. I loved looking around the control tower and getting up close to the B-52. I've lived in Wichita all of my life and never even knew it was there. It's a must see!
Amazing place of aviation history and also as an event venue
Awesome history and interactive adventure for children and adults! $5 Friday for little ones is wonderful.
Nice history here about airplanes.
This is a little jewel of the city!
I had been there several times and always enjoyed it.
Pay for the guided tour, you wont regret it. Make sure to spend time on the first floor too. Cool stuff down there.
Cool museum
Had a great time there.
Was fun! Kids and me enjoyed getting to go inside the fed ex plane.
Awesome history of airplane manufacture and influential people. Planes are getting timeworn.
For our City and its history in Aviation, I expected more. Cool old building. Did a Ghost Hunt there that was spectacular.
It's a small museum, but the planes on the flight line are very cool, especially if you grew up in Wichita (you can walk around and touch a KC-135 and a Beech Starship). The building has fascinating architecture, and there is a real sense of history.
Wichita aircraft heritage exceptional exhibits.
We enjoyed our afternoon. Learned lots of new things about aviation.
Good aviation venue for smaller events (100 people or so) pricey and tight/short list of approves service vendors (=pricey)
Great place to see the history of the air capital of the world.
Nice attention
Friendly staff. Cool place to learn about Kansas's contribution to aviation which I learned is a lot.
There's more here than you think. Although it definitely needs a major investment to bring it up to modern standards and make it accessible.
very interesting planes and aircraft
It was a great experience.
This is an awesome facility, with excellent historical aviation displays and a staff extremely well versed in the content and ready to help. It was especially fascinating to me as a senior. Brought back a lot of great memories.
Got to see Doc take off... great museum
Very detailed museum of flight with a Wichita emphasis. Well worth the $9.50 admission.
Very nice museum, better than I was expecting. Loved going up into the tower from where you can look down upon McConnell Air Force Base. The Art Deco architecture is nice to see.
Phenomenal experience. Highly recommend.
Really nice piece of history. The aviation buff will enjoy the history here. From the timeline of the cesna and lear jets. To military jets
Went here with my Dad. There was a lot to look at concerning the aviation industries and planes made in Wichita. Was really informative about the aviation history in the Wichita area. Also had a big campus to explore. They had some hands on exhibits, and an some airplanes to look at on the premises. Highly recommend this place to visit. It is a local treasure to explore.
Was very insightful
Great place filled with aircraft history. It's a shame that there are not more actual aircraft. Wichita is the Air Capital it just seems like it could be better.
The history of Wichita aviation development comes alive here. A friendly staff and the ability to get a close look of the aircraft are real pluses.
If you have 2 hours and a love of airplanes this is a must see. Housed in the old municipal airport, their collection of static displays is impressive. The history of the terminal is a cornerstone of American aviation. Make sure to get all the way up to the control tower for an unbeatable view.
Very neat aviation museum, the building itself is really historical. We were a little disappointed that the control tower was closed while we were there and the 3rd floor was getting renovated so there wasn’t much to see. We also really wanted to go into the planes outside but those were only open for special events. Overall, very friendly staff and informative museuum if you have a few hours to kill.
Great amount of aviation history from the Building to the Airplanes. Came from California to see the Texaco Stearman that my father flew in 1935 when he was 17 years old. Its like stepping back in time.
It was underwhelming.
Great place to see, and get very close to artifacts and actual planes
Wonderful place!
Lots of history. Super setting
Many interesting artifacts.
Wonderful museum with significant historical value. Interactive exhibits for kids of all ages. Beautiful vintage planes that have been painstakingly restored by the museum volunteers. The gift shop has unique, one of a kind, ite mmm s as well as clothing and toys. Well worth the visit. Cannot wait to go again!
Amazing
Really fun trip for a kid. It's right next to the Air Force Base so you also get to watch a bunch of airplanes take off.
Very very interesting - went by myself and spent 3 hours there::
Lots of aircraft memorabilia and cool aircraft to view.
An okay museum that could use some TLC. When you walk in, you wonder if anyone is actually here, as no one was at the front desk and the museum was empty. After waiting around at the front desk looking at stuff in their gift shop, a lady hurried out of an office across the way, and took my money for admission. Let's just say for $10, I was expecting more out of this museum, but it didn't deliver. Probably the best thing that this museum has going for it is the historical building that it's housed in, as well as the vintage aircraft of defunct manufacturers that are on display. They had quite a few on display that I hadn't seen before, and plenty of good information on them. With that being said, with so many civil aviation aircraft manufacturers calling Wichita home, the museum sorely disappointed me in that aspect, as they just had a small corner dedicated to Cessna, and a couple local aircraft examples languishing outside. It would have been neat to have a wall of local aircraft or something to see everything that came out of Wichita. Speaking of languishing aircraft outside, all of the aircraft outside were in a sad state as all have been horribly weathered due to being out in the elements, the 737 was possibly once a gold color, but you can't tell anymore, and the other aircraft have parts falling of and informational print outs duct taped to the fuselage. It's really saddening to see the aircraft in that kind of condition. Overall, it's definitely a small town museum with an okay inventory, but nothing worth making the detour for if it is out of your way.
Loved this museum. Great for all ages. Very interactive. Knowledgeable volunteers.
Well presented museum in a very historic building. I do feel some exhibits could be more child friendly but for a museum of limited budget it is excellent and well worth a visit for all the family
What an amazing place. If you like planes and are in Wichita, this is a must go!
This is a very, very interesting aviation muesem!! It costs $9.50 to get in (I don't know what it costs for kid's.) This actually used to be an airport!!! Plan on spending roughly an hour to an hour and a half here! If you have never been here, you need to go at least one time. You won't be disappointed! The muesem is really close to an air force base so you can see the planes doing touch and goes all day long! It is really cool!! Well worth an hour drive.
Not impressed.
Really an awesome place to visit
If you have any interest at all in aircraft, go here. This small museum is in the old airport and has some interactive exhibits to keep the kids entertained. Really neat space with some rare memorabilia from the early days of aviation.
Saw some of my favorite planes on display, the planes inside were very nicely displayed and presented. The planes. Outside were better left unseen. Nature is taking its course on these planes. Interesting history of the Wichita area plane manufacturing and where it is now. Nice but the outside displays need help.
Great aircraft history! Lots of sites and historical info.
Lot of history here. Nice building. Clean. Friendly people.
Beautiful museum, however, doesn't offer any discounts for military.
One the great art museums in the United States. Fun place to go with ur baby, i love it. Wish the summer was longer, i would go more often. A necessary stop for any traveler, and a valuable destination for any native.
There's a lot to see here. Some of the kids interactive things were broken unfortunately when we went, but they still had a lot of fun.
Great Museum. A lot of things to do for the kids.
AWESOME place to learn about the history of aviation!! SO many aviation industries had their beginning in Wichita! 3 floors of airplanes, engines, pictures and even a very nice children's area on the 2nd floor with hands-on activities as well as 4 age-appropriate simulators for pre-K through high school. DEFINITELY will visit again next time we're in Wichita!!!
Great place to be nostalgic..
Fun place for a kids birthday party!
Look I'm 63 I'm amazed by flight from the small engines to the size of the Jets engine and the difference of models of planes it super experience for all ages
This place is amazing. Wonderful area for kids to learn, excellent exhibits.
Super awesome! My family and I were here as wedding guests using it as a venue, and we will definitely be back to tour the actual museum. Great children's area as well!
A fantastic museum that showcases our aviation history here in Wichita. I consider it a must see and was very impressed. Well worth it!!
Go check it out, there is a lot of cool things to see and learn about, also there is a kids area for the young ones to play in!
Cool museum for those interested in aviation history, especially in the Wichita area.
Good place to visit
Good place for those who like airplanes
The coolest bit is the architecture... I was very underwhelmed.
Not too bad
Great things to see and flight simulators for the kids as well as adults! Worth the visit.
The old Wichita Municipal Airport Building terminal with the tower overlooking present-day McConnell Air Force Base. The museum itself is not packed but there are a number of interesting finds and restored biplanes. Outside though, there is quite a few planes that you are able to walk around, including a FedEx 727, KC-135, B-52, and a random assortment of other small and large planes. This place is definitely worth your time, try spending an afternoon at least
There is availability to keep children involved such as open planes and toys as well
Very educational, fun simulators, some things were under repair, also was having leaks from rain.
This place is a hidden gem!
Had fun
Nice little museum containing lots of interesting exhibits.
Activities for young children inside, interesting info
The most amazing and historical place. I took my family for aviation day and we will go again and again.
Great little museum with staris displays of aircraft indoors and out, as well as photos and information on people and companies and their contributions to the evolution of aircraft.
Not only is this aviation museum in a gorgeous historic airport but it contains many rare historical planes and engines. I have been in many air museums and while this one may not be the most glamorous, it is definitely the best at explaining the history and mechanics of flight in America. Highly recommended, and a great kids educational play area to boot! Somebody needs to donate a bunch of money to help them realize their 25th anniversary vision!
It is a good museum but it needs a curator. One of the planes outside was unlocked, you can try a simulation of trying to start a Stearman plane.
It was fun and it had a lot of things to do!!!!
Our family attended the Play in a Plane day at Kansas Aviation Museum. We had a fun day! The museum has great pieces and displays. Alot of wonderful local history. I learned new history of Wichita which was quite interesting to me. The people working there are so nice and knowledgeable about the museum. We had gone to the Aviation Museum two weeks prior and had such a good time we went back for Play in a Plane Day. It's a great place! Also there is a fantastic kids area on the 2nd floor. I highly recommend Kansas Aviation Museum. I feel not enough people know about this great piece of Wichita history and museum. It's a great place.
Very good value. Entertaining for young kids all the way to adults.
Very educational, has a unique collection and airplane stimulation pilot cabin.
A wondrous place, one of three art deco airport locations still standing.
Disappointing... For an area with so much flying history there was nothing in here... a big building in need of a lot of work. very little content. The planes outside are all in very poor condition and they don't even have any signage about them (except the occasional duck taped tags). this place could be a great place to learn about the history/future of aviation but in its current state/setup i wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
Great interactive displays, very nice staff
Tower be was closed. Not all exhibits were operational. However, it was very interesting to learn more about how Wichita became the aviation capital of the world. Tower repair is supposed to be completed summer 2019.
Good place to see in an Cradle of Aviation Hub. Lots of history here, for older Aviation.
Neat little place, some great info to be read. I wish there was more I could have spent quite a while there.
Considering the amazing history of Wichita with respect to GA (birthplace of Cessna, Beechcraft, Learjet, Mooney) this museum is a big swing and a miss. Only a few static displays, and they are in very poor shape. It’s too bad Textron & Bombardier don’t take interest in it, considering they don’t have their own (Boeing’s museum is incredible) but have great histories to share.
Fun, very interesting place to visit- even if you are not a great aviation fan...
Really fun place for all ages. But some of the plane simulators werent working right! Definitely recommend.
Interesting. Gary the volunteer was very informative about the Fed X plane& other aspects of the air port. Would recommend this museum to visitors to Wichita.
I love going to aviation museums, but am very disappointed in the poor condition of the planes and the historic building.
Amazing place
I have visited the Kansas Aviation Museum several times over the last decade and it always improves with each visit. This was once one of the busiest airports in the nation. The architecture is special and the exhibits are great. Lot of fun for aviation enthusiasts. The best part is climbing the narrow staircase to the control tower which has sweeping views of McConnell Air Force Base and Spirit Aerosystems. Kids will like the simulators and all the big aircraft on the tarmac. Don't miss this Wichita attraction!
If you're into aviation or museums this is a good place to visit. I was bummed the control tower was closed . Also none of the planes outside are open for tours which would've been cool to see inside. My 11 year old grandkids liked the museum.
Very cool place! I love the old building and it's not expensive at all to get in!
