REVIEWS OF Kansas African American Museum IN Kansas

Great place to get to know Wichita AND soak up African American culture. Great day at the KS African American Museum and Cultural Center.

Shanna Marshall

The staff are welcoming and most informed and though needing expanded space and expanded staff, put on changing exhibits that are well worth a visit. Lodged in the Calvary Baptist Church, the oldest black church in Wichita, the museum uses its limited space well. In addition to rotating exhibits 4-6 times a year--now is Gordon Parks photographs--the back room hosts an amazing collection of African art that exceeds what I have seen at the Kansas City Nelson Atkins Museum of Art. The museum's Education Director, Christyn Breathett, brings programs into the schools for a small fee and Director Mark McCormick is brilliant, super knowledgeable and a very kind and caring person, a former journalist with a passion for this history which is the history of all Americans. 3rd Wednesdays at 1:30 there are Senior Wednesday lectures on a variety of topics which I have always found most interesting. Films are often shown also, like a current series on Gordon Parks' films. Definitely a museum to visit!

This building is annoited with cascading light throughout the stainglass windows. Do not miss the photography of Kansan, Gordon Parks. I know this museum needs its communty to support and share its beauty with others. I highly recommend the museum. It holds history of Kansas many of us weren't taught in textbooks and I guarantee if you are interested in the African American history of Kansas, you will be enlightened and moved by the information this museum holds.

Just curious am I they only one who thinks it's messed up that this is the only museum in the city that's in the middle of a jail complex?

It's always nice to visit here yet at the same time depressing in the sense it sits behind the jail in the city hidden away, as well as it does not tell anything about the true history of the negroes which are the children of Israel, and that they fled into Africa during Roman persecution. The hidden history is manifesting around the world and our people need to really get into the truth and represent the truth, and quit letting the colonizers keep running their own history of lies about our people

James Henley

Its a nice place to go to and see some great history.

Lots of history to be learned here
