Excellent! Well described story of a piece of history th hat isn't well known. I do continue to be amused by the Custer emphasis of every sight in the are here. "Custer was an aggressive leader who ultimately led the 7th Cav to disaster at Little Big Horn. He was never stationed here but came by sometimes" the narrative is so consistent I've gotten to where I look for it at Western Expansion history sights

Christmas at the Fort is always a beautiful experience! The people work so hard to put this together each year no matter what the weather! Always puts me in the Christmas spirit! But also a great reminder of the hardships our ancestors experienced!

This is a great place to stop and stretch your legs on the long drive across Kansas. It will surely bore kids to death but adults who like history will enjoy it.

This state operated historical musuem a tribute to the fort and the people that occupied the Hays Kansas region during the 1800s. The structures are original with decor and stories to give a unique look at the life and happenings of this amazing era.

Attended the annual Christmas at the Fort event - one of the few times the fort is open after dark. Always a great time for the family, even if it is quite cold! See how the pioneers braved the winter, meet Father Christmas, and enjoy hot cider and spiced apples cooked over an open fire. A short horse and carriage ride is available as well;but be prepared to wait in line a bit if you don't come early!

We got a tour of the officers' housing from a knowledgeable & friendly guide. The rest of the buildings are self-guided tours. Very few of the buildings are still there. Not a whole lot to see.

Fort Hays Historic State Site offers some very interesting history. On the grounds are original restored building such as: the Blockhouse, & Officer's Quarters. The fort was home to the 7th US Cavalry, 5th US Infantry, & the 10th US Cavalry (better known as the "Buffalo Soldiers) in the well known Indian-Wars. Our tour guide, through the Officer's Quarters was very informative. The grounds, well groomed, are of a considerable size and you are allowed to venture out on your own. The museum is well displayed and offers a few souvenirs. Friendly, enjoyable staff. Clean restroom, and ample parking.

This place is great for spending a couple hours experiencing the life of a pedestrian or soldier in the U.S. army 150 years ago. Many buildings still exist in close to original shape. You can learn about what each building housed by using a kiosk that will tell you about its history. Make sure to come out on special events like Christmas past and reenactments of military life.

A very large let down. I came here with high expectations of seeing the history of Hays. What I got was an uninterested employee and a few very plain buildings that are in desperate need of repairs.

Lisa Berry

Great place to visit and see some of American history and artifacts. People hear we're very welcoming too!
