REVIEWS OF American Jazz Museum IN Kansas

Black History of Baseball's Finest. While honoring 18th and Vine's finest entrepreneurs, The Popper (Walter Erwin) and many other great leaders in our community.

Robert Kachman

While it is compact, it packs a lot of history into it. And the price of admission is great. Provides multiple aspects of the history, not just the musicians, but the tech and techniques involved as well.

Ray Niboro

Amazing program for young music enthusiasts. The director and staff are well skilled and highly professional. Mr. Smith, thank you for giving my son the opportunity to participate in such an amazing program.

Robert Marine

Nice

Gregory Hanevelt

Not much in there really. Needs 3X more content. More on KC.

Dr. Aleishia Arnold

Story time is fun, but lately it's been geared to cater to elementary students instead of preschoolers. So the younger kids have a hard time staying engaged.

Très coloré avec des vidéos d’époque très intéressante. Très beau musée dans un quartier plutôt animé le week-end seulement. L’un des incontournables de KC.

Edsel Tattooer

The museum was a little bit shallow on the depth in which they've could have taken the whole genre of jazz in fact some of the local musicians from Kansas City barely had a paragraph when they should have had almost a whole section to themselves overall the museum is about the size of a small house and not all that impressive.

Anna Vaughn

Had many interesting facts and displays of famous jazz musicians, however some of their fun interactive exhibits did not work, and some were missing headphones to listen to the music with. It was fun to walk around in and learn more about the history, but at least to me it was not really worth the money we spent to get in.

Polly Ness

Very informative and interesting. I will visit here again

CYNTHIA DILLMAN

The NLBM and the Jazz Museum was the only draw for me in KC back in 2003. Worth coming back to, and I would bring the family. ©TIFA 2003

Went with my daughter's grade school class. They had storytelling and the kids really enjoyed listening to the story and the jazz music that went along with it. The tour of the Jazz Museum was fun and the artifacts were so cool. Great place to spend an afternoon and learn about Kansas City's Jazz contributions.

Kevin Mayfield

Go on a Friday or Saturday, when the community gathers for live jazz music in the Blue Room. However, wear nice clothing since I felt a bit trapped in my casual, traveling attire.

FAITH'S HAPPY DAY

I enjoyed going to the HBCU parade which ended at the American Jazz Museum. Then they, and alumni from Lincoln University, an HBCU, co-hosted an H.B.C.U college mixer. To my surprise this event was held in the lobby of the American Jazz Museum immediately following the H.B.C.U. Community Parade! This is an excellent well organized Museum. It was very informative and it was nice to see that they are active in the community and supporting local events such as this. I found out that this is an annual event and I'm excited about coming back next year!

Leo Stone

Love it, love it, love it.

We invested 4 hours and went fast. Still couldn't listen to everything. Several displays did not work, and proofreading on their reading was sketchy. Generally roomy, well-maintained, felt fairly new. More sound shield between speakers would be nice, felt very Charles Ives. Lots of good material and some that was new to me! Thanks

Corinne Steffens

Incredibly kind staff! Lots of fun exhibits about a lot of different musical artists. Some interactivity which was really cool. Blue room is beautiful.

Given Tanri

I love jazz, so that is my bias. However, this museum can be educational for everyone, even for my father who knew little about jazz the museum is small and feels outdated, but for me as a Jazz pianist, the visit was worth it. They highlight 4 or 5 musicians, and you can spend the whole day just listening to their discographies and contributions to Jazz. Otherwise, if you are not interested in Jazz to begin with, perhaps skip this place and go to other attractions.

André Gonçalves

Didn't expect much due to size. Was completely floored by how well the material was well researched and organized. It took me two hours to actually get through Louis Armstrong and barely started Bird. Wasn't able to finish, since I scheduled too little time for it and family was already waiting outside. Recommend scheduling a whole day for Jazz enthusiasts. Small, but totally worth it.

Great artifacts from early jazz history. Nice interactive displays. Not much focus on modern jazz and improv.

Norm Cotton

Very helpful, friendly, and knowledgeable staff. Great facility. A neat experience.

Jordan Kruep

Alot of good information to see.

Dr. Sherri Fry-Wendt

A Kansas City treasure

jonathan tyc

Such a disappointment. Some interesting art and things on the walls, but so many broken interactive exhibits. I love Jazz, but it is hard to get anyone involved with it who doesn't have knowledge already, so I understand the challenge. I would have like to have seen more of a mention of the wide spread types of Jazz-acid, bebop, future jazz, influence on rap, etc. I wouldn't go again unless I was nearby and it was free.

Daniel Barton

Very well organized and very interactive.

David Fetkewicz

Mostly history, not a lot of artifacts or interactive exhibits. Helpful in understanding how jazz works.

sabrina scroggins

Shashank Wattal

Bring a set of good headphones with you if you can, a lot of the ones they have here don't work well.

Richard R. Shaw II

A great look at the history of the genre. Also, very interactive!

Alex

Pretty cool little museum.

Garrek Reed

Definitely worth going but it's a lot to take in and some of the interactive pieces weren't working. I hope to see a rise in interest in the jazz scene and more investments made to bring it back up to par.

Starrlet Eriacho

Doris Wilson

Such sn awesome museum! A definite DONT MISS in KCMO!!

Gary F

I was quite impressed with what has been done with the 18th and Vine area. We visited the museum on a Friday late in the afternoon and there was plenty of street parking for free nearby. I was really looking forward to visiting here. This was our one planned stop as we drove through town. The museum focuses on the giants of jazz including Louis Armstrong, Charlie Parker, Duke Ellington, and Ella Fitzgerald. This museum would be fine for those who want to know more about jazz music and for the younger set. If you are already a jazz enthusiast, buy a ticket to the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum instead because this won't be comprehensive enough.

Chris Rice

Fantastic love it

Melissa Mcculloch

I learned so much about the variations of Jazz! Very informative and wpuld recommend to anyone. The staff was pleasant and helpful.

Anthony Basham

A lot of the exhibits were not working properly. Really disappointing. Wasn’t worth the price of admission.

Love, Love , Love this place so much!

Jesse Brooks

Really nicely laid out space detailing the local history of the area. Fantastic, knowledgeable staff.

Ruthie P

Yes. Go. If you are a jazz lover, it’s a must do. I found this little interactive exhibit which allowed me to re-mix the original Charles Mingus Fables of Faubus. This was incredibly intriguing for me. You could make decisions about where to place instruments in the mix and about volume, etc—and then you could compare yours to the original. My couple of hopes for this museum is that they would relate a couple of the stations which were not functional and try to expand if ever affordable. If you’re an Ella or Satchmo fan, you should pop on by. Definitely go see the Negro League Museum next door. It’s really humbling and well put together. Military are admitted to both museums for free, btw.

Lynn Dobbins

Enjoyed the exhibits and the museum size was just right.

Lisa Dobbin

Very welcoming and genuinely friendly place! A very cool staff member helped make this photo amazing by joining in some fun! We felt at home.

Donnisha Wright

Great music & entertainment

Great venue

krislena Amador

We got the combo for the negro league museum and the jazz for 20 dolares both, it is really worth it, I really enjoy listening to the music they have in here, I don't know nothing about Jazz or baseball but I had a great time, one thing that was super beautiful was the jazz bar area with the tables I just love it. Even my 3 year old daughter was happy listening to the music and headphones in there were a plus for my little girl.

Kenny Chastain

Ok place to hang out for about an hour. Need to upgrade headsets so you can hear the music

Ryan curtis

Marie Gail Stratford

I love spending time here. Perfect place to come on a day or weekend in Kansas City. In town on a Monday evening? Be sure to listen to some talented artists in the Blue Room.

Mel Johnson

It is a little small but the joy is in the interactive displays that give you better insight into the development of jazz. They also have a great display of "soundies" which are short movies of swing music.

Adam Rogg

Really cool museum that is located in the historic 18th and Vine district. Fun to see how KC impacted the only truly American genre of music. It would be 5 stars but it's too small to say that. Takes only around 90 minutes to see the whole thing but you should see the Negro League Baseball Museum located just across the lobby. Together they will give you the whole afternoon.

Linda Pruitt

Awesome, a MUST see place.

Kaleb W

Had a most wonderful time here.

Marcus Sunday

Truly enjoyable experience. Very interactive and filled with great memorabilia. It's worth going to the museum itself but an added bonus is going to the Blue Room when they are having live music.

Paula Graves

Great! Employees were friendly.

Jeremy B

Great museum! So many interactive and hands on displays.

Christina Whalen

I personally dont think the museum alone was worth 10 dollars, but it was definitely unique and interesting. I suggest going when the blue room is doing an event.

Noah Gray

PJ Roch

Really interesting museum. Many interactive stations. The bar area has tables with memorabilia and a wall of photos that are amazing. There are choices of different jazz songs to listen to. Kids have a dress up area to play in. Gift shop is nice.

Andrew Cuthbert

Very small and informal.

Mark Craig

LOVE LOVE LOVE this place! Really well done displays. LOTS of music and video samples for you to listen to. Packed full of info. Very friendly staff. Great little gift shop.

It's cultured, its knowledgeable, it's enjoyable but it's not enough things to do, see and read for $15 a person.
