This Museum is classified in the category of Art museum.
Went to Fall Harvest - perfect day! Many things to do with lots of space to add things next year (and the next). Be sure to choose at least one of the chef demos - the education and samples are fabulous! Art projects are varied and good for many age levels. Food was, unfortunately, limited. Hope next season will bring more food and drink vendors.
It was my first time here and I was thoroughly impressed. I don't know much about art but it was enjoyable nonetheless. I would be interested in going back even just for the quiet relaxing atmosphere. It would be great to read a book here! The gift shop was great so I bought a few things. If you are coming you should give yourself plenty of time to look around inside and outside!
Great museum, enjoyed the exhibits plus the outdoor space. Liked how the themes are tied together at the end of every section. Plan for more time than you think you need! I couldn't see all I wanted to see with the time I had so will have to come back soon. The gardens are also nice and you can get a drink at the beer garden at the end of your visit.
I went here for a class field trip. It was a lot of fun to see all of the beautiful art work. I can't think of anything negative to say. The docents seemed to know what they where talking about and taught me a few things about art. If you are around, you must check this place out!
This was a nice museum. Something for everyone. We thought they were open until 8:00 but they closed at 5 because of the art festival so we did not.get.to see the first floor. But I would recommend going.
I never grow tired of visiting. Much better than STL's art museum, and worth the pay! Also, those who are struggling to make ends meet, they have reduced price tickets for those on government assistance! Believe it was $2 a ticket!
Beautiful place. Need more than an hour to see it all.
Me and my girlfriend absolutely love the art museum, it's an excellent date or family spot (for older children). There's art pieces from many genres and the gardens are gorgeous in the spring and summer!
Really a wonderful surprise to have a museum of this quality and size in Indianapolis. There is far too much to tell you about here so definitely go Newfields Museum. Galleries with Van Goghs and many stunning impressionist and other styles of paintings. Asia and Ancient Europe exhibits featuring Ming vases, Shogun warrior armours, jadeite carvings and ancient Greek marble sculptures were beautiful and awesome. The Design Gallery with modern and conceptual furniture was fantastic! Fabric and Clothing gallery was also amazing. Gift shop is nice and all staff are very friendly and helpful. We spent 2 1/2 hours there one day and then went back to see the other 2 floors a couple of days later. If you really want to see and enjoy this wonderful museum. Then you should plan to make a day of it and have lunch at the cafe!
Went for the samurai swords. Swords over a millienia old on display. Recently, have put more effort into flower power too. Re-name it IMA...newfields sounds like a suburban housing addition and has no relevance to historical aspects of property.
Lots of rotating exhibits. Great Pop Up Noodle Shop for lunch!
The fashion exhibits are always my favorite. However, there is so much more to love about the museum and its gardens! Free parking. Great events. Moderate admission price. The outdoor 100 acres is free, though!
Great art museum! Beautiful gardens!
Outdoor movie with good friends, great weather. Fabulous venue!
Lovely art museum with many events and programs. Friendly hosts, summer night movies, cultural themes, and many more.
So great....great combo of indoor and outdoor Art and activities
I love the IMA & have been a member for years. BUT I'm 100% over the hipster re-branding. I don't mind the beer garden but having it at the expense of the ART? NO! Closing off the grounds to the public was a huge mistake. Art isn't supposed to be elitist!
Enjoyed my visit, grounds were beautiful. Great for wandering and walking in a pleasant setting. My one disappointed was the lack of signs for clear path locations and spacific locations. We often were unsure where we were.
I am planning an event at New Fields and I called to ask a few questions. Payton was super sweet and answered all my questions! I appreciate good customer service like this, thank you! Also, the last time I was here Dru was so nice and stopped to see if our group was doing okay. I absolutely love this place!
The museum is a very peaceful place. After a visit I feel recharged.
It is so beautiful and peaceful. It is more than a museum.I love the nice garden and amazing Lilly House(Really hope I could live in the fantastic house). There are so many arts in the museum. The paintings, the sculptures, the furnitures, the clothes and so on. You can enjoy all kinds of stuff from all over the world. I highly recommend it. Definitely will come back(maybe in the Christmas holiday to see the light show)
Amazing experience. I went for the Winterlights. Impressive light shows choreographed with music, lighted paths, warming stations, tour of the Lilly house, and warm alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages served in several places along the paths. Highly recommend!
We love going to IMA. We were really unhappy when they started to charge to get in, but since they have started to charge. They have been steadily improving the grounds and the events that they are holding. We love going in spring for the flowers, and in winter for the lights. Of you are visiting Indy it is definitely a good place to visit.
The grounds are beautiful, but it's a shame they blocked off the bridge from 100 acres. My wife and I used to enjoy walking along the canal and being able to cross over to walk through the gardens but now we just don't visit anymore as we don't live close enough to justify the cost of a yearly membership.
Gorgeous museum with SO much to see. I have loved every visit! Grounds alone are worth it.
The collection was so so! May be if you have been to Paris' Louvre, the art at this muse would come through as average. If you read the other reviews, there is more praise for the beer garden than for the art itself. So, I am only exactly biased in my assessment. And, I must point out some other observations. We were monitored as we moved from floor to floor. When we were leaving, an Indiana Police vehicle was parked right outside the front entrance. It left a couple of minutes after we exited. When I was purchasing my ticket, another lady at the counter asked me if my partner was with me (in my mind, implying that I should be buying two tickets instead). My partner already had the ticket. BLATANT! Is the muse not used to having people of color? Well, welcome to the muse anyway!
This place gets better and better with time! This place is one of the most amazing, beautiful places in Indiana to visit. Great history, amazing artwork, well-informed, incredible staff and exceptional detailed information placards. It costs about $18 per adult, but it is worthwhile, especially on a sunny day for the Gardens. This place will always be a special place because I got engaged here! Parking is free and underground so it is covered in the event of rain or snow. Go!
For a museum that costs less than $20 and has free parking I’m giving this 5 stars. They have a great selection of art and a nice cafe. Of course all of the food was overpriced but it was very good, I had the apple panini and was very pleased. The museum was modern and clean. They had a few tours going on, I don’t know if they were free or not but the groups seemed to laugh and make comments that lead me to believe they enjoyed the tours. Overall I think this museum is an excellent value for your money.
This place is amazing. A lot of really interesting exhibits.
Always fun! Took a friend who was astonished to see Van Gogh, Picasso, Gauguin, Chagall, Matisse and others represented. Wonderful facility
One of the best art museums I have ever been to. The collection was diverse and very interesting. I particularly enjoyed the European collection and the special seasons of Japan sections. The entire building had a very nice atmosphere and I particularly enjoyed how different sections were themed differently to compliment the exhibits. After spending a couple hours here, my visited the gardens and even though I visited during the winter and the Flora was not yet blooming, it still was a pretty area. I would definitely visit in the spring or summer when the gardens are at their peak. Overall a wonderful museum and I would highly recommend visiting!
Mom and I enjoy this art museum. We try and always take the 1pm tour. It helps to learn something new. This Saturday it was on modern art and design and how they intersect. Great leader. Also the orchids were displayed every where giving the museum a spring feel.
Wow, what an incredible museum. So much to see and do, knowledgeable staff, and interesting rotating events and exhibits. The food in the cafeteria was a bit pricey, but very tasty. Highly recommend for anyone visiting, or anyone in Indy who's never been!
The Christmas lights were FABULOUS!! They had lots of volunteers to guide people. Lots of hand warming stations, a very fun s'more station and wide walkways so it didn't feel crowded. And their system of a designated entrance time helped with the flow of people - allowing us to take photos & enjoy the displays and music without feeling crammed in. We can't wait to see it this year!
Many interesting things to see and experience. Very enjoyed my day there.
It's so beautiful wonderful view good wine.
Awesome Christmas light display. However experiencing how the professionals display xmas lights makes one very self conscious about their own decoration abilities.
My wife loved it, if you want some Mega-Husband points this is the place to just relax and catch a movie outside
Great place to walk my dogs. Interesting sculptures
Beautiful and fun art museum. A definite must see!
Great museum! Incredible collection. Great art from around the world and through time. The building itself is interesting too. They have gardens also, but we didn't see them as the weather was cold and rainy and only the 1st day of spring, but they are supposed to be very nice
World class museum, grounds and programming. Something here for everyone. One of those places that you ask yourself "why don't we come here more?"
This campus and museum have morphed over the last 40 years and I love how alive this place feels. Each exhibit, facility, space, and walkable area are amazing attractions. The museum does a lot to be relevant in the ever-changing art-couture world. Kudos to the IMA (now known as Newfields).
Fantastic collection, stunning grounds, incredible all round. Definitely a all day must do !
Always enjoy visits here! Art is my thing- I'm home... ;0)
Great place to just walk around and enjoy nature even. But there's artwork, sculptures, drinks, and other things to enjoy as well.
Fun art museum in Indianapolis with a butterfly garden, nice pond/lake, And amazing exhibits. Def need more than one day or just a few hours to fully explore the entire museum.
The Hundred Acre exhibit is by far the best thing they have to offer it's free I don't understand why it cost to get into the art museum nowadays back in the early 2000s it was free cheapest day on Earth
Better than expect. Lots of opportunities to learn and activities for the kids. The garden is tops. Knowledgeable staff and helpful to questions. Even played along with my 11 year olds random topic questions. Worth the trip.
Awsome! Very beautiful and relaxing
Winterlights was amazing. My girls (both teens) loved seeing all the lights, had fun roasting marshmallows around the fire-pit, and enjoyed sipping on hot chocolate as we listened to music and walked the beautiful lit-up grounds. Would definitely recommend and will be back.
Enjoy the varied events they started hosting
I think they've done pretty good since they taken over ownership. I miss being able to go in for free but the park is very well maintained. The light show for Christmas was absolutely amazing and can't wait to go back with more family members. I need to take the time to walk through the actual art museum part because as I recall it was pretty awesome as well
This place is absolutely beautiful! Was there for the Penrod Arts Fedtival. One word: AWESOME!!
I have not visited for the art as of yet. Did go to see the relatively new Indianapolis Ballet and their "Love is in the Air" program at the theatre onsite. It was a good show and the balcony seats were all great views.
Newfields is an awesome complex of the Indianapolis Museum of Art, the Lilly House, beautiful gardens and a nature park. What a wonderful place to have in your city. The art museum is absolutely fantastic--be sure to check out the JMW Turner pencil sketches if they are on display. We visited on a rainy day, and still thoroughly enjoyed the gardens.
The spring blooms exhibit was beautiful to walk and admire even on a heavy trafficked day. Staff were friendly and helpful. The grounds were well kept and easy to navigate.
Amazing! We spent almost an entire day at Newfields. We did the outside portion first. We love flowers and visited during early May, so everything was in bloom and was stunning. We had lunch at the cafe outside which was delicious. Bring your walking shoes. Lots and lots of walking in order to see all that this place has to offer. We did not think the inside art museum could compare to the outside but it did! Tons of beautiful and interesting art. I could have spent hours looking at their Monet paintings. Wow!
Lovely grounds, especially during Penrod.
We love the gardens and the beer garden, in particular. The beer garden is a great place to get a snack and feel like you are on a mini-getaway because of how it's placed on the property. My only complaint is it's a little pricey: $17 for a pretzel with spicy mustard, a lemonade, and a root beer. It's an extra charge for beer cheese, which they didn't have the other day because they said it the batch didn't taste right (thank you for not selling bad product!)
Newfield's is the very best experience for those living in Indianapolis and those visiting. Family friendly and wheel chair accessable, Newfields is a premier art museum with acres of gardens. Additionally, visit the nearby Hundred Acre park for a view of a variety of art and architectural pieces. The park is free. The museum requires an entrance fee ormembership. All of this is worthwhile. If you know when you will visit the museum, you can plan a guided tour. Numerous docents are lined up to help make your visit even more enjoyable. My plan is to enjoy the once a year, Penrod Art Fair on the grounds of Newfoelds. We will see many of the 300 artists and listen to the Indpls. Symphony Orchestra perform. Great food will be available from top notch restaurants. One beautiful area my friends and family enjoyed is the crafts at the Children's Area. Everyone will find this an event to enjoy and return to each year.
Leisurely afternoon in a magnificent setting. One of my favorite.musuems although rise in admission price has dented attendance.
Art galleries. Fun inside and out!
Just recently had my first Visit. Loved it! Definitely plan on going back in the fall!
Perfect place for wedding photos. Costs $50 for the day if you're not a member. So many backdrops of nature to choose from. The weather was beautiful the day we were there.
A beautiful museum and stunning gardens. Newfields has something for everyone; it's very family friendly with activities for kids in the galleries, as well as a beer garden and cute "pop up" restaurants. They host events nearly every day and also offer a variety of tours.
Wonderful! Spent several hours here and would definitely visit again. So much to do and see. Outdoor is beautiful as well!
Penrod was perfect this year. The weather was great. It was a fun day for all.
The art museum was okay. I was told I couldn't carry my small purse on my back like a backpack so I was going to carry it from the purse strap. The security guard said no and I would have to put it in a locker. He gave zero explanation while people walked around with diaper bags, totes and huge purses. It didn't make any sense. The exhibits were nice though. Gift shop is full of fun treasures. We didn't get to see the gardens because it had snowed and was chilly. If I didn't have the power tripping security guard give me problems it might have been better.
We have visited art museums across the US and this was my favorite. Easy access and plenty of parking. So many works by famous painters. There were so many hidden treats that I would happily return again. Nice layout and several seats to sit and enjoy the works. Escalators and elevators are conveniently located with police watching the parking lot.
You need a full day here. There is so much to see. The museum is housed in four pavillions. I was overwhelmed with joy. I regret I didn't get to spend more time walking around the massive and beautiful garden. Lilly House was pretty neat. I have been to a lot of museums and was very surprised at this one. I enjoyed it a lot. Food: I suggest you bring food. There is a cafeteria downstairs which doesn't offer much. There is a noodle shop on second floor, please do yourself a favor. DO NOT eat there! It was disgusting. I was starving and was looking forward to a hot bowl of ramen. I decided to go for it since I saw quite a few people ate there. Very very dissapointed. After two spoon I just couldn't force myself so I paid my bill and left.
A relaxing stroll through the gardens and a nice, cool walk inside was just what we needed!
After the decision to charge entrance fees they certainly don't need money any longer. Plenty of funds to tear down the woods behind lily house to "restore" the beauty of nothingness & pathways that there once was. Plenty of funds for Nicole to neglect responding to my inquiries about booking my wedding 4 years ago... and not enough staff to respond about my recent inquiries regarding a contest that I'm guessing no one won. I don't think we can be friends anymore Newfield's, I like reliability a little too much.
Beautiful property. Lots of outdoor photo ops. All the flowers were in bloom. Lily House is neat. I will return just visit the grounds and see what new things are planted as it changes with the seasons. Impressive.
We have been members for a couple of years. On this instance we were visiting to attend the Winterlights. It was beautiful! We love being members at Newfields. Great place to go for a date with my husband or a day out with our kids. We love walking around the gardens - such a great place to do family photos!
This place is wonderful! Loved touring the gardens and greenhouses.
I highly enjoyed the variety of art and quality of art pieces presented. The staff was knowledgeable and friendly and the orchid planting expo was a major success. Let me also mention the cafe has some top quality food and definitely worth a try. If you have never been I highly recommend it we have a great Art Museum.
A hidden Indianapolis Gem I've never lived in Indy but have been nearby many years. I've been to Chicago, Dayton, and Cincinnati art museums but never knew about Newfields. I will definitely go back.
My daughter attends University of Indianapolis and needed to go to the art museum for a class project. She is on crutches. We were greeted so warmly when we arrived. She was given free admission as a college student and we were immediately asked if we needed a wheelchair, which we did. They stored her crutches behind the admission desk. We loved the exhibits and I will definitely return. Thank you so much for a very positive experience.
Breathtakingly beautiful gardens. Very eclectic art collection. Love the contemporary art.
The kusama exhibit is very cool
The famous Bert was there.
My best local retreat! Great food in the cafe! Awesome monthly if not quarterly events for all ages. The Winterlights season gets better each year!
A beautiful setting and excellent facilities for a corporate meeting
I use to love visiting the art museum, but by increasing their admission from nothing to almost $20/person, they have effectively priced the experience out of reach for many people in the city. I understand having to charge, but such a steep increase can only be viewed as an attempt to keep the riff raff out - the riff raff apparently being economically challenged families.
Penrod Art Festival was fantastic. Mixture of visual and performing.
I love the acres and outside part of it. Such great scenery for photos. I haven’t experienced the inside actual museum but I’ll definitely be back to visit. Parking is free so that’s a plus!
Amazing display of art, both modern and from previous periods. Numerous exhibits to walk through and take a tour of history. Famous painters such as Rembrandt and Monet among the works. Exhibits included samurai swords, fashion, portraits. Really amazing. Free parking and admission of only $18 with four floors of the museum and outdoor sculptures.
Wouldn't let me use the escalators with my children, said it was a safety issue. Question for the museum : how do you think we make it up and down all the steps outside, last time I checked there was no outdoor elevator.
Beautiful space, well taken care of! Visited for the Winter Lights and I was blown away! Excited to see what the gardens look like when the flowers are in full bloom.
Really enjoyed my visit and my tour with Valan!
I could have spend hours outside in the gardens. I love how the walkways just keep going & there are so many twists & turns. The art museum was good & had some interactive options. It's worth the stop, especially if you like walking outside; that made for a great day!
Changes happening that make this even better. Walk through the gardens, explore the art work or hike the 100 acre trail!
I was at the Toby for my first Ballet of Swan Lake. I sat in the balcony and when I got there I didn't think it was going to be good seats but it was really good. Its a little crowded out in the Lobby area but other than that it was pretty nice. It would have been nice to have an usher up in the balcony to help people(me) find their seats.
Pop up noodle shop was fun and you can't beat the samari sword exhibit.
This is a really cool place, and worth a visit. The museum inside is awesome and inspiring, while the garden grounds are luxurious and beautiful. A great place to go for a walk in warmer weather.
Who would have thought you'd find a museum like this in Indiana. Some all time greats are on exhibit here and the gardens, and Mansion are incredible too. Never made it to the beer garden. A must see if you've got half a day and are looking for a cool place to visit.
The grounds/garden/greenhouse are all so beautiful. There's so much to see, and I never have enough time to see everything!
Visiting from Washington, D.C., I am spoiled with museums. Most are free in D.C. and each one is unique and offer a great experience. When I travel outside of D.C., I often leave disappointed in other museums. That is NOT the case with Newfields. I left think it's one of the best museums in the USA. Here's why: 1) Space: It's HUGE! There's a large main building with several floors of all kinds of art from modern art to an exhibit on furniture design. You can spend hours in the building alone sipping tea at the pop up tea house, playing in the kid area, or photographing the original 'L-O-V-E" sculptures now seen in cities like Philadelphia. Once you're done with the actual building, there's more. Gardens, a beer house, and so much more is on the property. Plan to spend an ENTIRE day here. 2) Art: Because of the sheer size of the museum, there's much art to see. The stand out is the original "L-O-V-E" sculpture, but spend time exploring the furniture design exhibit to see some unique chairs and couches. 3) Interactive: No surprise for a museum in the Midwest, they have an excellent children's room with crafts, games, and sensory art experiences. My two year old daughter spent hours in the room and did not want to leave! 4) Beauty: From the art to the building to the property, the museum is stunning! If you're into photography, you'll wander for hours capturing moments. If you have just one weekend in Indy, I still recommend spending time here. There is a steep price tag to enter, but if you plan to be here for most of the day, it's worth the money!
Lovely grounds! Great exhibits. Restaurant food is very tasty! Get there before 2pm if you want a hot meal. After 2 the menu reverts to premade salads and sandwiches.
This is a beautiful museum. There’s a really pleasant trail in the outdoor garden area, I’d highly recommend taking a walk through there. The museum is clean and has lots of interesting art and history!
Beautiful landscaping allows a great walk. Tulips in full bloom. Great visit for the entire family.
Such a wonderful place! Worth the price of admission. Can't wait to go back.
Parts of it are excellent and there are quite a few surprises of some famous artworks in there that I did not know were in Indianapolis. But there are many many secondary and tertiary artists who worked in the style of Picasso or Seurat, but there's only one Picasso and there's only one real Seurat. The Asian exhibit is the most lacking but I'm glad for that because there's enough of that anywhere. I think they would do better to place lithographs of different artists and have the real thing than the secondary and tertiary artists if they can't afford the paintings. And the fourth floor, for the most part, is a total joke.
Newfields in spring is SO beautiful. Sitting in the beer garden, enjoying sun and ale; wandering through all the gardens and orchards and art; finishing off with a gander at the Japanese exhibits. Bliss
Last time I was in it was still IMA. They had a decent collection, and I ended up playing a round at a mini golf exhibit setup outside. It was good visit.
Went to Winter lights again this year. It was great! The drinks (spiked) were very good. It was a little bit rainy but the show was still spectacular!
Its to expensive for they artifacts. They wasnt many cool things to watch or things that were interesting to see. But that's probably because I'm not really an arts kind of person
Was there for an event very nice, seating was great. Did not see any exhibits. But I plan to visit again soon.
I love this museum because of all of its amazing prices and exhibits. It is very nice, clean and the security is very polite. Overall it is a fun place to visit and a great time to have!
It has a wide variety of old art pieces. I especially enjoyed looking at the handcrafted housewares. I also loved the orchids through out the building.
My membership was a gift from my husband. I see something new everytime i go, usually i notice something i did not see on a previous visit. Don't bring a backpack!
A magical, wonderful evening and great way to celebrate the Christmas season with family and friends. We highly recommend this event and hope to go again!
Went to Penrod and toured the Lilly home, Oldfields. Gorgeous day, best company! Wonderful day.
This is a really good, encyclopedic museum, though some collection is either too small to be put on display (e.g. Oceanic) or is shown together with another collection that would otherwise be in a separate exhibition (e.g. Pre-Columbian & Native American). Nonetheless, you will not run out of good art here: American, Asian, and European exhibitions are solid; African collection is extensive; the gallery of Design Arts is intriguing. And it is a pleasure to stroll inside - seating is ample and strategically placed, and the flow of galleries is great. I also admire their approach of doing special exhibition (which is "Seasons of Japan" in my visit). Instead of throwing everything into one big gallery, they break down the main theme into several smaller topics and fit them into galleries that are most relevant (e.g. samurai swords in Asian Art gallery; dresses by Japanese designers in Fashion & Textile Arts gallery). On the downside, I feel that they should have paid more attention to some details, so here are a few minor quibbles: first, the listening station inside an Asian Art gallery would be better off situating in a more enclosed space. Second, an introductory label to the Chinese Art galleries is needed. Last but not least, lights that reflect on the artworks are always the natural enemy of an ideal museum experience.
Such a beautiful place! We could have spent all day here!
This museum had a great amount of art, thoughtfully displayed. I especially liked the modern collection even though I usually don't "get" it. The only reason I did not give it 5 stars was the cost. It is not exorbitant, but it may be high based on the size of the museum.
Had such a great time at winter lights. Absolutely gorgeous! Volunteers were so helpful and the snacks and drinks were very good. Such a lovely date night!
We had not been since the museum had changed to Newfields. I was amazed at how much there was for my younger child to do. The staff was very helpful and easy to find. There were many interact stations placed throughout the museum to hold little ones interests. There was more than we could see in one visit and we plan on going back soon to visit again. If this review was helpful please hit the thumbs up! Thanks!
I caught a flat driving pass here and had to park in the parking lot. I never knew this place was here. Having nothing to do but wait for my tire to get fixed, I went inside. One of the best decision I've ever made. It was beautiful (and I only went on the first floor). It was clean and refreshing. The art work was amazing. I order some food and a drink, the food was great and plentiful. The guy who took my order made me feel welcomed! I will be back to see the rest of the place. My new favorite place! God works in mysterious ways.
Great location. Amazing art. Well worth it any time of year!
Great art museum. Not too expensive. Easy casual day of enjoying art! When we were there they had special exhibits of blown glass interior design that we found especially interesting. It was neat to see furniture and gadgets from 1900 till modern times. Also, the grounds are pretty interesting and we toured the original mansion house. Nice day.
A wonderful place to spend am afternoon...both indoors and outdoors. You will always find something to enjoy! I'm looking forward to visiting in the winter for Winterlights.
This was a really unique holiday experience. The grounds were beautifully decorated and the volunteers/staff were incredibly friendly and helpful without being overbearing. They even had warming stations to take off the winter chill. A very nice touch! I could easily see this becoming a yearly holiday tradition. If you have kids this is a must see!
A must see if you're in Indianapolis! Either on your own or in a small group, it's time well spent.
I really enjoyed this place. I didnt pay the $18 price, I instead took the free tour of the 100 acre garden. It was BEAUTIFUL. It's a GREAT place to bring the one you love/like on a date. The staff are extremely friendly and you can tell they keep the grounds taken care of. I just didn't like the price for a tour. Other than that, it was AMAZING.
I went to the outdoor lighted Christmas walk. FABULOUS! Absolutely a must do for everyone. A world class experience! Well done IMA! Ooops, I mean NEWFIELDS!
Excellent grounds and museum, the collection is not the biggest though
First Time! The lights played to music in some areas, the Lily Mansion was beautifully decked out with lights and decorations! Got the premium package that included 3D Glasses, Smore Package and a Hot Beverage (Hot Chocolate or Hot Apple Cider). They even offer a spiked Hot Choc or Hot Cider for adults. Even the light up toys for kids came in a range of prices, very affordable. We also had the live singers on the night we went. The experience was magical for myself and the family! Fun for all ages, even the teenagers!
Great art, beautiful gardens, and fantastic food in the cafe as always. I am so pleased that we spent the money to get a membership. We visit everytime we are in Indy.
Excellent art museum. Lots of well knowns. I like the layout and space. For sure visit outside in the spring through fall.
I am sad to say this, but this is the worst experience I have ever had here, We drove 2 hours to get to the museum, and we went through all the check-in points and came inside. My mom had a backpack on her the whole time we walked up stairs, but right as we got to see the first art piece a security guard came and told her she couldn't wear her backpack on her back, but on the front like a baby bag. The rule was put in place because people could pump into the exhibits with the backpack. And on top of that there were several other people with backpacks and purses that could bump into something but they chose to pick on us. This for one is the most ridiculous thing I've heard someone say, and so she took it off her back and carried it in her hand and he let us continue and suddenly another lady came and said her she couldn't even have her own purse (backpack) with her money and everything with her. We were so frustrated and hurt by this situation that we didn't get to enjoy our day off together, and we ended up leaving. I hate this place now, and wouldn't suggest to go here ever if you don't want to risk a chance of getting picked on like this, and treated this awful.
I love strolling through the gardens here and viewing paintings and learning about the artists in the museum. A membership would make a great mother's day gift.
A delightful surprise that even many locals don't seem to know about. One can easily spend half a day strolling in the gardens, ending with a refreshing beer in the bier garten, getting a very informative docent tour of the Lilly House, and/or the IMA extensive European and American art collections, stopping for some nourishment at the Cafe, or browsing the beautiful displays of the museum store. Whatever you do reserve time for a leisurely pace.
I suspect that most people go to see something interesting and are not experts. Yes, much of the abstract art makes absolutely no sense to me, but I can appreciate the colors, textures, and creativity. Don't let some pretentious expert define art for you. Appreciate the variety and the gardens.
Very impressive museum! Everything is very beautiful!
After looking up what to do in in Indianapolis on a Monday night we found newfields was having a Harry Potter movie. Three different web pages said the movie started at 9:30pm. We get there at 9:20 and inform the lady in the front we needed help to find where the movie was playing. She then proceeded to talk down to us. Informing us the movie started at 8pm and we must have been mistaken. Also the the internet said it started at 8pm. She told me I could finish the last few minutes that I was miss informed. I took screenshots of the time informations from multiple pages that stated Harry Potter July 15th 9:30 PM. I'm highly disappointed that such a museum would have such a huge misunderstanding and would allow their employees to talk down to a customer like they are stupid, who clearly has the information at hand.
Excellent place.. I loved the outdoor
We loved this place! So uplifting. The gardens are lovely and well maintained. The art collection is adequate but exceptionally well presented.
The Tobias Theater where the IBE Summer Celebration Flum Festival was held was an inviting atmosphere for creativity!
I wish I could afford to have my wedding here. It is one of the most beautiful places in Indiana
Love this place! Always time well spent. There is so much to see as they have the museum, the gardens, and the greenhouse ect. Such a peaceful place to visit.
I'm not giving the Newfields one star because I dislike the Newfields, in fact, I love the grounds there. They are beautiful and well maintained. I always enjoyed walking from 100 Acres over to the Newfields and walking through the gardens and seeing the Lilly House. That was one of my favorite things to do when I moved to the Indianapolis area. Then one day my husband and I walked over and the bridge to the gardens had been blocked off. Now you have to be a member of Newfields in order to even look at the gardens which is absolutely ridiculous. My husband and I don't drive up there enough for it to make sense to buy a membership and paying $18 per person to get into the gardens is a bit too much. They claimed that the change was to make it more inclusive but it's obvious that the change was made to exclude more people. They obviously cater to a certain class of people and take away from others who just want to enjoy the beauty of the gardens in the process. Congratulations, Newfields, you took a perfectly beautiful thing and ruined it.
My wife and I regularly purchase year memberships. It is a good art museum. With the name being "Newfields" now, how can anyone know what it is or look for. The name "Newfields " sounds more like a department store than an art museum.
It was amazing! Wish we had more time there. Bring your walking shoes
I'm from California and we have some beautiful trees and flowers but nothing as amazing as these. So many different colors ranging from red to blue to yellow and whites. Amazing just amazing, I enjoyed this place very much. Great for the kids and the whole family!
Loved it, just wish we had gone earlier in the day and on a day it wasn't raining. We didn't get to tour but just a small portion of the museum.
Very diverse collection of art and by far the largest art museum I've been to!!!
Great museum of ancient and modern era art and artifacts.
I really liked this museum. Interesting architecture, exhibits, there’s a Biergarten and many awesome places to chill.
The Beer Garden costs $18/adult for non-members since it's part of the campus. So, be sure to go to the front desk for your entrance ticket. Beautiful blooms and flowers in their greenhouse.
Beautiful pieces and the grounds are gorgeous as well. Wish there was more Van Gogh, but glad to at least have the opportunity to see the one.
Newfields new branding is great! We enjoyed attending Pen Rod and then explored new exhibits in the museum. The kimono high fashion one was cool.
As a member from when it was the IMA I was nervous for its rebranding. I have to say, they have done an excellent job with bringing in the community! From it’s put-put golf, to the outdoor movies, to the beer garden (my personal favorite) , and Winterlights there is always something to do! They also do a fantastic job of curating new exhibits and keeping everything current. I highly recommend the yearly membership. You get early access to tickets for Winterlights and discounted prices.
Went for the first time in many years, after finally purchasing a dual membership. It took a while to figure out the revised layout, so we got in a bit more walking than originally planned, which was fine since there were so many Spring blooms to look at. Spent time in the greenhouse taking in the various plants there, including many varieties of orchids. Finished the day looking at the unique offerings to be found in the museum shop. Purchasing a membership highly recommended for locals, as you will want to visit the grounds frequently throughout the year, not to mention the art museum itself. (There are discounts if you select a digital version.)
First Ever Harvest #Newfields was...Pumpkins, Spice and mostly everything nice
Art work and interactive exhibits get 5 stars. A great museum. The pop-up noodle shop, deserves 1 star (hence they 4 stars overall).
First time visiting was not disappointed exhibits and atmosphere were great
