It is great for anyone who wants to read about aircraft history. I found it rather cool. It is pretty small and the one attendee definitely managed to stand in one spot the entire time so don't expect much as far as tours go (It is more of a DIY experience). Inside and outside are both rather small, but for a quick and cheap day trip it's worthwhile. I took young children with me and they thought it was very exciting. Outside you can climb the control tower even though it isn't posted anywhere that you can (we missed out because we didn't realize until we had left the museum to the parking area that you could climb it). You literally just walk in, go out to the outside viewing area, walk that circle until you've seen it all (doesn't take long with kids), and then go in to see what's inside. Very small, but inside you can sit in and crawl through a plane. I can't stress the amount of information available if you have time to read it! Well worth the cheap admission fee.
Fun stop ! Interesting history that was fun for adults and kids. Interactive cockpits and helicopters that the girls enjoyed. Not crowded and had nice paved walkway around the outside portion making it accessible for all which I thought was awesome.
The museum curator gave us an amazing your. Chucked full of facts and details. Loved her personality and quick wit!
Took my grandchildren. They loved it. Good experience for them. We will definitely visit again.
Amazing new items noted at my annual visit. Much more organized and cleaner than prior years!
When on vacation we always drive by here and say one day we need to stop. I finally had the opportunity to stop and the place was pretty cool. The kids liked the jet they could get in and the helicopter. They had a decent amount of plane's for what it was and a lot of information of the history of the units.
We were there for the Grissoms Maintainers Reunion on July 13th.
Family would always stop here on our way down south. Opened or not, you can pull in the parking lot and just marvel at the awesome aircraft. Still stop by everytime I'm in the area. It's an older installation and I haven't noticed anything new added to the inventory. Would love to see them expand.
A little on the small side, but still a pretty nice place to see planes. They have a couple of exhibits that you can actually climb in.
Friendly and knowledgeable staff very clean facility well maintained. Aircraft are in generally good condition and an interesting combination of souvenirs and mementos available. If I lived closer than Indy I would probably go more than three or four times a year I go now.
My only reason for just four stars is that they won't let you take your leashed dog on the outside loop to view the planes. Otherwise an interesting place to visit when you are in the area.
Great history of our air superiority
Loved it, great military museum
Great place to play Pokemon Go!
Awesome museum. The aircraft they have now are in perty good shape even though they don't have asany as they did. The displays inside are really cool along with the artifacts. The tower wasn't open while we were there, I have been up it before and it's a cool view especially if tankers are landing.
Cool place and lots of history
They have lots of pokestops.
Very informative, beautifully displayed. Helpful employees. Just wish there was postcards to keep my memories alive
Great little Museum. If you're in the area poke your head in it's a great little stop
This was a little side trip on a vacation. There are dozens of planes in the yard, each detailing how they were used. Some are rare finds. You can climb the tower and see them all below you. There's a nice sidewalk around the yard. The inside is small, but has interactive parts and you can set inside a couple of aircraft. There is a hall of honor. Dont expect a lot of gus grissom memorabilia or info because there isn't much! Despite the name, it is a decommissioned air force base.
Fantastic!
Fantastic place to see some planes and learn some history! Cold when we visited but still worth the trip!! Recommend!
Great place to visit. Lots of interesting facts about military aircrafts. Hosts are great to talk with. Only 6 dollars to go thru museum.
Great museum to go to had alot of planes I thought I would never see.
Was an amazing experience
Driven by for years and we finally stopped! Got pictures of my boys with one of the types of planes my grandfather would have flown on during WWII.
Great museum! My kids loved sitting in all the cockpits and walking around the planes.
Awesome staff and planes
Cool place to learn aircraft history.
This is the coolest museum I've been to in a long time. It's really neat to see what things looked like during the ear and what soliders went through. Will definitely make another trip here sometime.
The Air show was amazing
Their show was awesome.
Got scammed out of 150$ by these guys during the air show. 3 "VIP" tickets that take you on a shuttle to the actual event and claim to give access to the "designated VIP area." Turns out, the museum isn't actually affiliated with the base, and the "VIP area" they offer isn't the same VIP area at the actual show, but instead it's a mile away from any actual planes.
I very much enjoyed stopping here. Lots to looks at inside, and the planes outside we're very well displayed.
Well worth seeing,
Awesome planes. Take the kids
Overall the air show was average. Planners need to get more information out on the air show before the event. There were no details on Facebook or the Grissom web page. We had no idea when things would take place unless we bought a program!
The car show was pretty cool but the Actual Air Museum was alr
FAMILY TIME!!! DAUGHTER LOVED IT! HAD GOOD TIME. FRIENDLY STAFF AMAZING THINGS TO SEE. WILL BE BACK!!!!
Smaller than the Museum of the USAF in Dayton, OH but still a great place. It took me about 2 hours or so to go through the entire place. Almost all of it pertains only to aircraft and events at Grissom AFB. There were a couple of really good hands-on displays inside. And plenty of static displays outside. I definitely recommend checking this place out of you're ever in the area.
Saw an outdoor concert there. Is was nice!
Museum was good --- air show was not much and to long delays
The people take great care of the museum. Great displays. Well worth the time to visit.
Heading back home, we passed a sign for the Grissom Air Museum, and my momma immediately turned back...no regrets at all as it was simply amazing. The photos are all outside, but inside the museum is just as impressive, if not more, with the amount of history, bravery, and pride dedicated to the contributions of Hoosiers and especially, all of our nation's heroes, past, present, and future. To all of our men and women, serving currently or who have served to protect us in any form over the years, thank you.
Love the selection of aircraft on display. Unfortunate that most are in need of paint and maintenance. However, just another reason to show support and pay them a visit. Be sure to visit the Dutch Cafe across the street!
Awesome place to see aircraft and history
Our boys had a lot of fun here. It's small but cheap and well worth it, even in the rain!
If you have younger kids, hit this museum on US-31. Not only are there some very classic examples of war planes and helicopters outside, but inside there are cockpits of planes and helis that you can sit in. A lot of memorabilia as well. I believe it was $6.50 for adult admission and kids were free. A must stop during a road trip.
Great place to stop in and see some history. My family of 5 spend about an hour here. You could spend several hours of you take your time.
Just because you close the judging at a certain time you still should let cars come in they'll pay to be there they don't have to be judged you lost $30 that I know of yesterday this needs to change you had plenty of room to let another 50 cars in there that I know of and your classes you need more classes you got too many in a class from 1955 to 79 that's that's too big a class
Definitely a great place to stop and see some cool aircraft. Everything seems really well maintained.
Very cool place. And everything is hands on and you can get up close with all the planes!!
So much to see
Very educational
Cool place to visit that is fairly priced.
Great place if your into military planes, worth the six bucks for sure. The elderly volunteers are very knowledgeable & will tell you ALL about every plane! LOL Average time to walk through is probably 2 hours.
I know he sees a lot what I would love to take my grandson to this air Base
Great place with a whole field of planes, and even a cold war era "drone." You can get close to the Jets out in the field, but if you really want to feel like your flying there are a few mockup cockpits you can actually climb into inside the museum.
Awesome place to see old planes
The museum is truly worth the stop and the small price of admission great for kids and adults alike. lots of history even the ones to young to understand will have a great time.
Such a awesome place
A great museum with lots of well maintained and displayed aircraft. Well worth the stop. I enjoy the interior displays but the aircraft outside how they were displayed were fantastic. The control tower and being able to take photos from the tower may the experience fantastic.
Amazing for all ages, affordable, handicap friendly, great customer services. We will be making an annual trip.
Airplanes! Seriously tho, airplanes. They have some good ones.
Well worth the drive if you like air Force history this is a must visit great place to bring the family
Small museum with most exhibits outdoors. Kids really liked visiting and seeing the different aircraft. Very friendly staff.
Everyone Needs to go see this it's fun and educational
Nice travel break: friendly hostess, airplanes, and picnic area for our lunch.
Great place to go with family
Awesome little museum. Plenty of historically significant aircraft that you can walk right up to. The gentleman working the entrance was very welcoming.
The planes here look really cold. also a really good place to play pokemon go or ingress
Camt wait to see it again
Lots of info on each plane
Lots of history! Kids loved it. A great place for aviation lovers.
Fairly small place, but only $5 for military dependents and active duty, there's a lot of information and the displays are fairly cool. Definitely worth the detour.
The staff were very kind, helpful and knowledgeable! My kids learned so much and had fun making the movie "Space Wars" while at the museum! :) They are already talking about wanting to go back the next time we are in the area. Being able to climb up the Air Traffic Control tower was a bonus.
Way cooler than it looks from the highway, this is actually one of my favorite aviation museums. An interesting collection with some more unusual pieces outside and some cool interactive stuff for kids and adults alike inside (I mean where else can you crawl through the intake of an f4?) When you're there make sure you don't miss one of the coolest scale model collections I've ever seen (near the bathrooms). The majority of the aircraft are outdoors and there is little shade so do be prepared for that. However, none of the aircraft are "roped off" so you can walk right up to/under/around all of them which is super cool, I personally love being able to see the hustler from all angles (Even above from the control tower!) It looks small but you can easily spend a couple hours here and it's cheap as dirt. Finally the staff is awesome, knowledgeable and clearly passionate about aviation.
Wonderful museum of Aviation. Easy to get about. Great for kids, who might become bored with the static displays, but there are several cockpits that they can get in and out of.
I toured Grissom AFB today. What an amazing place. The guides were very knowledgeable. The place was clean.
This museum was so fun! And very kid friendly!! Super affordable and has a gift shop :)
We were driving by and decided to stop and visit. Neat museum and we had a lot of fun.
Nice small museum. Worth the stop. The people who run the place are nice and knowledgeable. Grounds are well keeped.
Always have loved stopping by since I was a kid. My son loves planes.
Definitely stop here! Only $6 per person and lots of cool stuff!
Great museum. Worth stopping in. Gauruntee you learn something.
Awesome place to see history. Rain kept the Thunderbirds from flying
Great place to see, touch, and learn about aviation history. It also intermixes with the local areas history and our nation's air power history through the Cold War. Several static displays, a tower you can climb up, a bunch of patches and military history items for sale, and several aircraft trainers you can see and climb into. Truly hidden gem in Indiana.
Nice little museum. My child loved it!
It is a way to get military history and see some of the aircraft that made that history.
Nice place. Very nice people. Went for and AMC car show.
Well laid out , great variety of aircraft, and you quite often see Air Force planes flying overhead. Lots of interaction for kids as well, cockpits and helicopters to sit in and explore.
Knowledgeable staff, lots for the kids to see, touch and do, and not bad for the parents too. Well priced gift shop!
Pretty cool place and the people were very friendly
Excellent. Tower (200) steps gave an awesome view. The signs around each airplane were educational and informative. Easy to walk with seating available for breaks all the way around. The interior museum has a small gift shop, and is laid out by war (Vietnam, Cold, WW, etc). The staff are volunteers, I think, and very knowledgeable and helpful. Definitely worth the trip.
Great place to see historical planes.
Had a great time.
Tons of aircrafts to visit and if you play pokemon go you get 15 pokestops to hit every 5 mins
My daughter's "happy place" is anywhere she can see aircraft. While on a recent pass through the area she saw the grissom air museum and requested that we visit again sometime soon. Today was that day. One detail that we liked is that the self-guiding walking tour outside not only mentions the particular kind of aircraft you are viewing and some interesting facts about it, but says interesting facts, history, and so on about THAT PARTICULAR aircraft. It makes it much more personal. A GREAT venue for anyone who values and appreciates American military aircraft. I look forward to seeing how it evolves over time.
Staff was knowledgeable and friendly. The air craft were well maintained. There was some nice little surprises like letters home from services members from WWII to the 80's
Interactive with the public, new things have been added to the museum, and the outside section was interesting with the plaques that has information about each jet/plane.
Never had ben there me an my boy stopped . An it was very interesting to see the plane's up close like that
This museum is fairly small but has a bunch of history packed into it. The staff is amazing, including many veterans, and even a WWII veteran that was on a B17 crew and survived being shot down, not to mention survived a POW camp. This is a must visit destination if you want to learn about Grissom's aviation history.
Good place to visit
Perfect for a family outing. The kids loved the real life cockpits you can enter for a picture. The Huey helicopter and F4 phantom were their favorites. They have a display of a jet engine cut open to see how it works. To see a F14 tomcat was stunning. They also have an sr 71 blackbird drone, F4 phantom, and refueling jets.
Very interesting. Planes outside are amazing, the info and exhibits inside are very informative.
Really an amazing place if you are into aircraft histroy or just history itself.
The people who run the museum are super nice, and the museum itself is quite interactive. I love it!
Alot of walking but very interesting
.Absolutely amazing experience. Definitely will be coming back
Lots of historical planes to see and read about. Plus we were able to watch planes landing and taking off from the nearby Grissom Air Force Reserve Base
Convenient place to stop at after returning from The Dunes.
Love all the history very friendly staff
This place was really awesome!!! We enjoyed it alot!!! Nice to see all the history!!! It's open Thur-Sun 10am-6pm. $5 Per Person Kids 5 and under-Free
Great history lesson
Great experience. Interesting history. Nice picnic area.
My uncle and I had a great time going through the museum. He served there and the history from him made the tour even greater.
Awesome place
Great museum. Friendly staff. It was awesome to reminisce. Really well done Security Police exhibits!
This is my second time, visiting/camp here, with my Scout Troop, in fours years? We all enjoyed the museum inside and out. The planes/jets are amazing, and inside interactive displays are great. We will be back.
Great exhibits! I loved the information about the actual aircraft that are on display, very cool tidbits. I don't remember seeing that at other museums before.
A terrific museum with unique aircraft displayed outdoors. There is also an indoor learning center with multiple hands on exhibits that are perfect for kids. If you like aircraft or military history, this is a must see.
Nice little air museum
Seem great my older sister does cap here she gotten a award there today she loves it too
Great place to visit and very friendly staff
Friendly staff and is a nice place to stop by and visit on your way through to stretch your legs. Planes are awesome and well kept. Really nice building as well. Highly recommend if you are into aviation.
My old Air Force Base.
They have some neat old aircraft. Not bad for an inland air museum. The staff is friendly and helpful as well.
Great car show also today
Great museum and was there with a retired air force person so I was well informed
For a museum it actually was eye appealing and kept my young kids interested. Neat place. Great gift selection. Friendly and informative cashier guy.
Happened to be passing by on US 31, saw the aircraft displays, did a quick 180 at the next intersection and visited the museum for a short visit. Spoke at length with volunteer John, a 40 year USAF vet. He was charming and a wealth of information. Checked out all the various aircraft on display. All but a couple were in really good condition with very informative plaques by each aircraft. Wish I had more time to spend inside. Well worth the effort. Admission fees were very reasonable.
Cool place to visit
This was my first time in this area and also to an aerospace museum. It was small, but can't wait to bring my grandkids here, I think they would have a blast! For a smaller museum, they have quite a few things the kids can sit and pretend they are the pilot. Not just all boring stuff to read and look but don't touch! Also, the little gift shop has reasonably priced items to purchase which helps the museum ... How can you leave without buying SOMETHING?!
It has alot of history about Vietnam, how the airforce came into play and many thing to see. Like equipment, weapons, claymore mine, prc 77, gas mask, boomers, war planes. I had a good time.
Really old planes facility is well maintained, interesting about our history!
Interesting history and well-maintained. We enjoyed our walk-through. We spent a couple of hours there on our way home from an event.
Had a great time, even though it was very humid outside. A lot of nice planes, I took some great pics. They also have a nice gift shop!
Great place to learn some history!
Great place to stay.
Great for kids all ages
Nicely kept Air Museum with a variety of aircrafts and historical displays. Our boys loved the fact that they could climb into some of the planes and heli!
Great history and displays grandson loved it. We were lucky when we were on the tower when two air tankers landed. , they seemed so close . Will continue to take grandkids there.
I'm a part of Civil Air Patrol and we meet up here. It's a great place to learn about airplanes and other information you need for airplanes and relating topics.
Totally awesome
Good museum, very well run. And as of March 2018, might be thought of as a work in progress. Could use more indoor room; it is jammed with various static displays from different eras. The "complete" and often very large aircraft are all outside, arranged in a parklike green. As with almost all mid-size museums, it could use more, and especially newer, aircraft. And unfortunately, there is almost nothing there about Gus Grissom, except a portrait.
My grandson enjoyed everything about this museum. The person who greeted us was very friendly and very helpful. My wife and I were surprised by the number of planes and the variety. Will return with other relatives in the future.
Great place to take children and adults. Lots of military items and planes to look at.
I went here with my girlfriend and we LOVED it!!!! We are definitely going back soon!
