REVIEWS OF Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site IN Indiana

$12 entrance fee was well worth the money because the guide was very knowledgeable and spent over an hour with us. Very interesting and a lot of original pieces.

Joe Kessler

I look forward to seeing Benjamin Harrison's home and everything I had read led me to Believe that the house was open for tours in fact there was a sign out front about tours. It would have been Better is something had been placed no tours today or even something online. The lady who greeted us said that hopefully we could come back some other time well we don't live there so it may be some other time it just would have been nice to have more warning that there were no tours available on that day. That being said I'm sure it's a great place to visit and you learn a lot I just wish I could have that day but I'm hoping some other time I will be able to and then I'll be able to raise my rating.

Jenn Kraschnewski

Little gem in the middle of a beautiful neighborhood. Tour was about 1.5 hrs long, very informative and interesting. House was restored beautifully with most of the original furniture.

Tony Konecny

Beautiful house and interesting history of a President of which i knew little.

Beth Kalli

Wonderful tour!

Deborah Tracy

The guides made American history come alive. The furniture pieces and decorations were very authentic.

Mark Neumann

Interesting visit and tour

Heidi Mayo

Our docent is 21 years old and incredibly informed. I brought my camera which was fine. Just no flash photography. My children are 9 and 10 and they both held on and didn't get bored the entire time. There are some very steep stairs you will climb, though I thought I read about an elevator. I was a little disappointed to learn that many of the artifacts aren't original to the home. Also, I think one of the side notes our docent told us was incorrect. Helen Keller signed a document. She mentioned her teacher as Alice. It's Annie Sullivan. But not a whole lot to do with our visit, either. Editing to thank the museum for replying! Our docent led me to believe it swung in the other direction. Fantastic! I still ended up taking 256 photos!

John Nitis

Very knowledgeable guide. Beautiful home and grounds. Attractive old Indy street.

violet lapine

We visited the Mansion during Twas the night before. They had lovely actors sharing stories of traditions for the season it was really nice.

Jackie Price

Barbara, our docent, was so gracious and informative. As a native Hoosier, I had no idea that Benjamin Harrison was from Indiana and that he admitted more states to the union than any other President. Just learning interesting facts like that makes the whole tour interesting. I would suggest this tour for anyone visiting Indianapolis or even for local residents who want to know more about their 23rd President.

Pamela Boyden

This was the first Sunday they were open in January. Our tour guide was amazing. We have 3 boys and our tour guide interacted with them and made it educational and fun for them. Well worth your time to see this home.

Anne C

Hours are misleading. Even though the hours say they close at 3:30, the last tour starts at 3:30. The gift shop does close at that time, however.

George Porter

Excellent staff, very informative docent presentation, and wonderful historical landmark.

Suzanne

Outstanding. The docent, Courtney, made it a very enjoyable and educational visit. This property is a national treasure.

Ruth Teskey

This is a beautiful historical home that President Benjamin Harrison built in the late 1800. They offer tours daily at a reasonable cost. I found the tour to be interesting and informative.

Historical Mansion of U.S. Pres. Benjamin Harrison.....many Docents in period costume, all very knowledgeable about the property. Visitors center and bookstore in former carriage house. Local garden clubs restoring the original heritage gardens. Mr. Hyde, skilled at taking care of visitors and school groups ! Fri. Oct. 27 , 2017..they hosted the IN. STATE DAR...for the placement of an official marker for..MRS. CAROLINE SCOTT, HARRISON..a force in her own right...an excellent painter, excelling in painting orchids and birds on ceramic plates.

I went to the Benjamin Harrison Presidential home today! It was like a time capsule! The house was beautiful. The lady doing the tour said that 70 to 70% of everything in the house was original! They also explained that the light fixtures were converted to electric from oil. The furniture and wallpaper was a site to behold! I loved that the hard wood floors were the original floors from 1874! The carpet was also the original in the front room! I think this is a must see place on your getting to know Indianapolis

Holly Doan Spraul

Just go! We spent a couple hours there learning from the guide, and simply admiring history we previously knew little about. For curious minds, this is a gem.

Shell B

This was a great tour. The house's furnishings were beautiful, and we learned stories behind many of the pieces. I liked hearing about the less known president, Benjamin Harrison. The tour guide Jim was informative, humorous and friendly.

The Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site, previously known as the Benjamin Harrison Home, was the home of the Twenty-third President of the United States, Benjamin Harrison. It is in the Old Northside Historic District of Indianapolis, Indiana. Harrison had the sixteen-room house with its red brick exterior built in the 1870s.

G H

Great experience

Laura DeGroot

I would recommend taking a tour of the Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site. I have been twice and loved it both times.

Scott S

funny political humor/cartoons

Rod H

The house itself is in very good condition and most of the items on display are originals owned by the family. The docent for our tour provided a lot of political and personal information about the Harrisons. They have Harrison's commission that was signed by Lincoln just days before he was assassinated.

Shane Ostrowski

The docent tour was really, really good and 90-min long. Wonderful that 75% of the furnishings are original. Very reasonable price and well worth a visit. Actually covered ground for two presidents! A true gem for Indianapolis! Keep up the great work!

Jay Edwards

Great historical information, awesome tour for educational family trip. Staff is courteous and very informative.

Patty Rendino

I was watching a PBS show & learned about Benjamin Harrison. I hope to visit this location in the near future. I have only lived in Indy for 2 years. If not for Public broadcasting station I would have never known this place existed.

Jeannine Waldock

Visited many times. Fascinating. Beautiful. Historic.

Chris Wood

Fun show of past presidential ghosts! The house is extremely well kept!

Grand Pa Mike

great old house with lots of original furnishings. Our guide, Bob, was not use to showing the house to old folks. He was giving a history lesson. Had to interrupt him and get a shorten version

Adam Breakey

Very well maintained and interesting! It was nice that most of the rooms are not roped off and could easily be viewed by walking through and seeing items up close.

Amber Justice

Loved this place and Jim the tour guide was awesome!!

Jameson Terzini

Best place to vote ever.

Jokez Plays

Beautiful plays and great museum

Matt Walters

Well kept piece of history. I enjoyed the well informed tour. Just know at the end of the day, it’s essentially just a historic house. Nothing too exciting beyond that. But still a good visit.

Weston Bonczek

A great tour of a Hoosier landmark.

Joe Large

Stepped out on the huge yard, walked on the wide expansive front porch and imagined his friends and family playing, talking. His side garden with sundial and coach house in back. You ought to stop take a stroll, and imagine.

Michael McCrory

This place was amazing. I went with my son's 4th grade class on a led tour. It took 45 minutes and it was fascinating. I believe tours are free.

Kelley Jourdan

Definitely one of the better presidential home tours I've been on, even better than some museums I've visited. We came near the end of the day and got "stuck" with Gary as our guide. So glad we did. He was so knowledgeable and had a true passion for the history of the President, as well as the home and collection of antiques. My daughters loved learning the fan signals and still refer to Gary's instructions. Our tour went over the time limit and I didn't even realize it! I could spend all day in there. I didn't have a chance to thank Gary for such an excellent tour because he had to run to assist someone in the gift shop. Thanks, Gary - you are a wonderful guide, even my girls commented on your in-depth knowledge and how much they enjoyed the tour. I highly recommend this tour. Ask for Gary! You won't be disappointed!

ben pettigrew

Great place!

Laura Starkey

Beautiful place to visit!

Terry Nelson

Much more than I expected

Misty Williams

Wonderful informative visit during a 5th grade field trip. Enjoyed the basement lesson from the passionate guide. Beautiful home.

C Y Cooper

I'm a history buff and since I'm in the city of Indianapolis, Indiana for a short stay I decided to visit the Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site, home of the 23rd President of the United States. A national historic landmark, the stately 1875 mansion has been restored with over 10,000 artifacts, including furniture, clothing and artwork. This Victorian home takes you back in time and since the Harrisons were members of the elite of Indianapolis, you get to see how the other half lived in the late 1800s. Really enjoyed the tour of all 3 floors of the mansion. The tour guide was excellent. If you're visiting Indianapolis anytime in the near future, carve out a couple of hours to travel back to the Gilded Age and see the home of the 23rd President.

Valerie Cafferata

Downright amazing!! Perfect for history buffs. They did a beautiful job of restoring the house to what it was like when Harrison ran for president. Andrew Miller was our tour guide and was sooo good! He seriously made the visit so much fun, testing us on our history knowledge! He had so much enthusiasm that made the visit one of the best tours we’ve ever had!

Rhonda Clark

Great for history, not great for kids. Boys were bored.

Paul Chandler

Awesome History too learn about here, in Indianapolis, its FREE!!!. Come check it out!!??

Jack Canter

The grounds are pretty. I had coffee with some friends in the garden.

Eunice De La Torre

I never thought I would want to learn about the 23rd president of the US. The home was awesome and the tour guide did a phenomenal job of powering through a crying baby while keeping us engaged and not irritated. If you're a history buff or just want to learn about a president that isn't widely spoken about, I would come here

Mary Taylor

Very beautiful and the tour guide was very knowledgeable about the president and his family.

Jody Veldkamp

The home is in wonderful condition. The exhibit was interesting and well worth the trip.

Owen Cook

Very detailed tour of the elegant home of a seriously underrated president. The proportion of original objects and pieces of furniture (north of 80%!) is extraordinary. It was also fun to learn about Harrison's family, especially Carrie the First Lady, William Henry Harrison his grandfather, and Elizabeth his accomplished daughter.

patgoert

This was a great museum to visit! Our docent was well informed and gave a very interesting presentation. There were so many period pieces to be seen and so many things that actually belong to the Harrisons. additionally there was an elevator to take a person up to the second floor.

Sarah Hartman

Really interesting. Tours of the house given every 30 min by very knowledgeable guide. Tour guide gave very detailed descriptions of each room in the house and gave tidbits of information on Benjamin Harrison. The home was kept as historically accurate as possible, with lots of added items from presidential history.

Fred Beyne

Outstanding!!

Theresa Dieruf

Amanda Schirmang

Our family had a great visit to the Benjamin Harrison Presidential Site. Our volunteer tour guide, Mike was not only knowledgeable but incredibly personable. He answered questions we had to the best of his ability and interacted well with our six year old. The tour itself was incredible. Unlike many others of its type around the country, you are able to go into each room and at times, delicately touch items. You truly get to immerse yourself in the lifestyle. If you have small children, make sure they are well prepared to be handsoff or don't bring them. The price of admission is fare as the property is very well kept. There is a modern and clean restroom house on the property for multiple people.

Free mini tour on the 4th of July. Pleasant employees (maybe volunteers) in the terrible heat and this house is a wonder to see. The Harrison's were there (actors) in full character. Learned a lot about our country's history and our Presidents. I'm going back for a full tour.

Great historical home with much information for all individuals with presidential interests. The tour takes you throughout the whole house and lets visitors see many artifacts from the Harrison family life. A majority of the items present are from the family collection. Recommended for everyone interested in one of the few Indiana Presidents.

David Warstler

My cousin and I love ❤️ living across the street from this wonderful property. We have been apart of many functions in this year of 2019. We have enjoyed the many flower beds of color also this spring and summer seasons. My wife and I visited July 2014 and enjoyed it tremendously. The volunteer tourguide, Orin, was excellent! He knew just about everything historically about the home and family. The house is kept in excellent shape. Took about an hour for the tour. Highly recommend. Tours start at 10:30am. You have to ring the doorbell and wait a couple minutes for the Tourguides to greet you. Cost is $10/adult with discounts for children, Seniors or AAA members. No camera flashes allowed.

Carolyn Niemantsverdriet

A lovely house with some great programs.

Carmin Cappetto

Awesome tour guides. A lot for information for a small place. Ton of history there.

Greg Catcott

Ok but our tour was very limited by a croquet tournament the day we went. Nice mansion, nice guides but small compared to other presidental museums...

Jeff Kline

It was a nice mansion. The tour was fairly quick, but about the right amount of time. The tour guide was new and didn't have a lot of info outside of what she had been taught. If you asked questions she usually didn't have the answer, but that takes time. They did a nice job of staging the house, and there was a lot of good information.

Dean Golding

Fantastic tour by very knowledgeable guides. Excellent experience.

We went for the Birthday Party celebration. Only the first floor was open at the time but it was really neat. My preschooler was a little bored during certain parts but my 5th grader loved all of it. I would love to come back for the full tour. Please hit thumbs up if this review is helpful.

Asylum King

Good way to spend an hour on boring summer days

Karen Grosz

Definitely take the tour if you like Presidential history.

LuAnn Wood

A great way to learn about our 23rd President. I have a new found appreciation for his administration and his support of women's rights and environmental causes. His wife was a gifted painter and her work is displayed throughout the house. Our tour guide was terrific!

Anne Hardwick

Our volunteer tour guide was fabulous! We enjoyed learning some local history. The home has an amazing collection of actual Harrison family items.

Ann McCormick

A wonderful Historical place to visit. I was with the DAR twice now. I would like to go back for a visit with my Granddaughters.

K Bergeron

The house is magnificent and the people charged with its care go beyond knowledge to true understanding of the home, the Harrison Family, and the sentiment of the time. Themed tours throughout the year are excellent! They are approximately one hour and under $20. Highly recommended The Civil War dinner is pricey for an event so it is best to consider it a fund raiser. "Benjamin Harrison" and his "Aide de Camp" provide interesting information while prepared questions for the guests help stir lively conversation. Recommended

Jessica Peveler

Pretty cool historic house, if you like such things. Pres. Harrison was the first "modern" age President, using such new technology as typewriters and telephones. Everything is remarkably well-preserved.
