Even thought museum is located inside the Columbia building it is not affiliated with the college directly and I was told it only presents Columbia student produced photos in rarest exceptions. It's a comparatively small museum somewhat squeezed into the three floors, but staff finds creative ways to play around the architecture. Don't forget to check out their website and don't forget about the special feature: the museum holds lots of photo prints. If you would for example like to see Sally Mann's works stored there, just make an appointment on their website.

The museum is part of the Columbia College and host exhibitions which changes regularly. The exhibition in July 2016, "Petcoke, tracking dirty energy" was really interesting and a great tool to talk about a misknown problem. Visit only if you are into contemporary art.

We just discovered the Museum of Contemporary Photography and I don't know why it took us so long. We went to a a discussion led by Kristin Taylor, the Curator of Academic Programs and Collections. It was stimulating and enlightening. The museum is technically free, but, there is there is a donation box in the front of the entrance, feel free to donate! The actual exhibit area is 3 floors, but the actual exhibit area is small and located in a Columbia College building, Definitely check out the second floor. They have an inventory of approximately 15000 photos, so they have lots of material for exhibits. In fact, there are new exhibits every couple of months. They have well known and lesser known photographers in their collection, all of them interesting and worth a look. I highly suggest checking out their website for the current and upcoming exhibits and events.

Immer wieder einen Besuch wert, da man nach 3-4 Stunden nicht mehr wirklich aufnahmefähig ist.

The 40th anniversary exhibition is a knockout, and the salon-style installation is just right. Free (and open late) on Thursdays -- as is the Art Institute up the street, if you're feeling energetic.

I enjoyed this museum's exhibit, but it is so hot inside, it's hard to stay long. Three floors of exhibit space, though the top floor was occupied by a big group of students (the museum is located at Columbia College.) Most of the exhibit is located on the first and second floor, anyway. In this exhibit, it's not strictly photography, but an amalgam of media including photography.

Very sad experience. It was my partner's birthday, and they are a photography student. We are only in Chicago for a few days. Surprised them with a trip to this museum, which was listed as being open until 5pm. We walked in the pouring rain to get there, just for the door to be locked. A young woman opened it and said it would reopen on Thursday because it's closed for a new exhibit. We leave Wednesday morning. We explained that we were visiting and that it was my partner's birthday and they still said they couldn't do anything to allow us entry. Although I understand that they need to renovate sometimes, we were extremely disappointed given it said it would be open online.

Last day in Chicago we visited a little museum of Columbia College , the museum of Contemporary Photography. These days ( and watch – until July) there is an exhibition of College collogue Dawoud Bey devoted to anniversary of September 15th 1963 bombing black community on the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Al. (2012) Collection belongs to Birmingham Museum of Art. Bey diptyched feature of portrait of a child at the same age as one of those killed paired with a portrait of an adult at the age the child would have been in the year 2013. The images are remarkable. Also there were photographs illustrating the protests to segregation laws in 50th-60th. Just reminding us about that ugly period of our history. And inspiring to treasure the diversity of our country were each race each faith is equal. Thank you to the college developing this museum.
