A terrific Frank Lloyd Wright prairie style home. Easy Metra access from Millennium Park. Well informed docents bring the building features to life. A must see for FLW fans and anyone with an interest in prairie style architecture.
Amazing house! Beautiful details! The master bathroom shower is so unique. There is no overhead shower. The water comes out from the pipes that goes all the way around to the side. The lighting details are so unique! Nice architectural design.
Beautiful prairie style house in Chicago, a perfect example of the Frank Lloyd Wright style. Although extensive restorations are going on it is still worth visiting..
If it hadn't been under renovation, I would have given it a five. Great tour and knowledge guide..
Amazing experience and architecture. 10/10
A must-see for architecture aficionados and FLW fans. Book your tour ahead on the website. Parking can be a challenge.
All the work to build such an extraordinary house and Robie only lived in it for 1 year.
The guide was very knowledgeable, but currently several rooms in the house are under renovation, even allowing for that it was still an interesting and worthwhile visit.
I love historical tours, and this one was pretty good. I got the hidden spaces tour that allows you to take photos for your own use (though they make you sign a waiver if you intend to do that). The hidden spaces tour takes you to all three floors and the guide is really knowledgeable about Wright (architect) and Robie (owner) and what they wanted this house to be as far it was a work of art as well as a home. I am not sure what the standard tour includes, but I figured that I would probably only go tour this house once in my lifetime, so why not splurge for the hidden spaces tour ($55). After all, it goes to a good cause of preserving the building which, believe it or not, is kind of in bad shape in some places and needs some work. If you live in Chicago and you have not checked out this master piece of architecture, you are really missing out on an easy and awesome experience. When you are done you can check out the beautiful University of Chicago campus and some of the local eateries.
Inspiring piece of art.
If I had more time I would have liked to taken a tour. I will return and do one for sure
The building is indeed quite historical and we had an amazing and articulate tour guide.
Enjoyable history lesson and beautiful architecture. A must see in my mind.
Interesting tour, but many rooms are not available due to restoration.
Expensive acces
Amazing building, but in the midst of a refurbishment. I'd wait till it's completed.
Great place to see. Well organized tour but beware of certain tour guides...*cough cough* Carol. Does not make the tour comfortable and you'll be tense the entire time.
Wayne was an awesome guide and the tour of the house was fabulous.
Gorgeous house. They have spent over $10 million on maintaining the building. Nice location in UoC
Disappointed that they could not shovel a path to clear the snow.
Amazing home and well preserved. The tour is well worth it so you can see how the house looked when it was built. The tour guides are friendly and informative. There were a few children on the tour but young kids may find it boring. Overall well worth the visit.
It's very nice
Was great to see such an iconic building and learn about the journey it has taken since it was built
Impressive renovation, great staff!
Really interesting place to visit in a very nice neighbourhood. The your was really worthwhile and our tour guide Frank was very knowledgeable. The trust is still working to remodel some of the rooms back to the original design but there was still plenty to see inside.
The Frederick C. Robie House is a U.S. National Historic Landmark on the campus of the University of Chicago in the South Side neighborhood of Hyde Park in Chicago, Illinois, at 5757 S. Woodlawn Avenue. Built between 1909 and 1910, the building was designed by architect Frank Lloyd Wright and is renowned as the greatest example of the Prairie School style, the first architectural style considered uniquely American. It was designated a National Historic Landmark on November 27, 1963 and was on the very first National Register of Historic Places list of October 15, 1966. Cool place
The Robie House in Chicago is one of the world's most famous and influential houses, a masterpiece from the end of Frank Lloyd Wright's early period and a classic example of the Prairie House Style.
Great place to see. Well organized tour of an amazing piece of Frank Lloyd Wright's work. The tour guide was very knowledgable and informative.I highly recommend the guided tour.
A bit pricey, but the architecture was spectacular and well worth it. Our tour guide, John, was very knowledgeable and helpful about pretty much anything we asked him. Great experience
The importance of FLW's influence on architect cannot be over emphasized. All modern architecture draws from his genius. Robie house is an icon of modern American architecture. Fabulous experience but very little to none of original furniture in the house
As of 6/16/18 the Robie House is undergoing renovation and the tour includes only two rooms, the kitchen and the dining room. While interesting to see a Frank Lloyd Write house, this summer is not a great time to go.
Very interesting place for the architect buff. For the price was a little disappointed with the length and due to construction the area of the house.
The house is built in Frank Lloyd Wright's Prairie School style which is impressive to see and is situated almost right in the middle of the University of Chicago's central campus making it easy to get to. However, it costs 18USD for a 45 minute guided tour which is the only way to visit the interior of the building. This is an extortionate price and the building was undergoing renovations with no offer of a price reduction. Outrageous.
The best example of Prarie Architecture, the preservation is in the process of restoring the house. Great opportunity to see behind the scenes of the house. A must go see!
Amazing. If you ate FLW fan, it's a must see.
Invaluable example of American architecture
Love the architecture but it's still under restoration, there are 3 rooms that they are currently working on restoring but other than that all the architecture inside is amazing especially to the detail design and features. Oh and be sure to visit the little coffee shop right next to it, great place to sit and sketch away with inspiration.
Great tour, beautiful house.
Poor Communication By Museum Website on Need To Pre Purchase Tickets, Less Than Stellar Onsite Staff In Chicago from NJ for a weekend trip and made the trek out to the house for a tour only to be told by the staff that they were sold out until late in the afternoon. Nowhere on the website did they say to prepurchase tickets to make sure you could get a tour. Staff flexibility was zero in trying to accommodate us for a tour. Needless to say we never got a tour. No tour, uncaring staff and poorly communicated and managed ticketing process = 2 Stars.
While I am glad they are restoring it, the modified tour was a bit disappointing. The only furniture were a handful of chairs. The children’s room, dining room, and guest bedroom were inaccessible. Several windows were removed for restoration. We still paid full price for the tickets. The tour guides seemed very weary and uptight, and they projected a thinly-veiled disdain for tourists. “Just, you know, don’t touch anything.” My friend and I were waiting in the courtyard outside the gift shop (where I had just spent $30 on souvenirs) before our tour started, and we were scolded and told to shush for laughing briefly during our conversation. It was the end of a busy Sunday, but no need to shame paying customers for having a joyful conversation in a public outdoor space. I would recommend getting tickets in advance, as we had to wait 30 minutes for the next available tour. And don’t you dare forget your ticket or join the wrong tour group. Two others were chastised for these transgressions. Also, they provide a plastic outdoor locker for your valuables, should you wish to not carry them around (or if you have a backpack), but I saw no fewer than 4 different staff members open and close the locker for no reason, while no tourists were present. So, I wouldn’t necessarily say the belongings were 100% “safe.” If I were to visit again, I would wait for the restoration to be finished and would pray that the tour guides are in a better mood.
Lifelong dream come true! It was fantastic to tour this historic and game changing building. We did the private places tour, it was more money and first thing in the morning, but so worth it. We had the house to ourselves, well worth it. If you're on the fence just do it, you only live once!
A real masterpiece in the middle of the Chicago University Campus. This house tells the real spirit of Frank Lloyd Wright architecture. Just to have in mind that the house is pretty accesible un the surroundings, Tuesday is closed to the public for tours, but still you can walking around.
Amazing 1st time visiting a home that's a work of art
Awesome Frank Lloyd Wright house. Did the audio walking tour of the neighborhood which highlighted other buildings as well.
Last tour at 3pm. Must book prior. GO PASS SUCKED for this
As knowledgeable docents explain, Frank Lloyd Wright's Robie House at 5757 S. Woodlawn Avenue in Chicago not only exhibits his mastery of Prairie style architecture but also shines as an icon of modern architecture. More than a century has passed since Wright designed the Robie House, making his ideas and their execution a striking testament to the longevity of his genius. You'get a feeling for the Wright mind as you learn about his methods and processes -- from seemingly inconsequential decisions to vary colors of mortar between bricks, to cantilevered structures that brand the House as a Wright masterpiece. The tour is more than worth the price of admission. If you're in Chicago, don't miss it.
It was mostly under construction when I went (May '18) But still an amazing house, and worth a visit if you're a FLW fan or just like architecture in general.
One of Wright's early masterpieces is a must see. The functional layout of contemporary residences owe much to Wright's genius. It is definitely a thing to do when visiting Chicago. The guides are knowledgeable and insightful; tours are an hour to an hour and a half depending on the package. Tour fees help with the restoration of the building.
A dream place. Don't miss it if you are in Chicago... One of Chicago many magic places!
Historic Frank lloyd wright house acres from the university of Chicago. Tour guides are very knowledgeable and willing to answer questions
Really enjoyed our tour - one of the highlights of our trip to Chicago. Very informative and our tour guide, Frank (yes, Frank), was very knowledgeable. Highly recommend!!
Beautiful to look at from the outside. The inside is largely unfinished and unfurnished. Crowded tour. Tour guide Wilfred did a good job. The people in the store were nice and helpful.
Great place to visit if you are interested in architecture.
Don't miss this if you're interested in FLW's work.
Iconic Wright house that must be visited by anyone interested in architecture. The tour seemed rushed. Extensive restoration will make our next visit even more interesting.
Chris was our tour guide and he definitely was very knowledgeable as well as willing to answer ever question thrown at him.
Definitely worth a visit! The house is a masterpiece, and the guided tour allows visitors to truly appreciate the architectural details.
It's a great house and the tour guide was knowledgeable, but it's being renovated for some six more months, so we felt like we didn't see as much of the house as we might in six months. Still, if it's the only house you can get to see, it's still worth it.
Frank Lloyd Wright gem nestled into a neighborhood full of unique architecture...he would be so happy were he to know how many people have admired this home over the years...
Tours are given hourly in small groups, under restoration in summer 2018, beautiful piece of livable art, outstanding!!
If you're into architecture or design, you'll love seeing this Frank Lloyd Wright house. Proceeds from tickets/gift shop go toward a huge restoration project of the house.
Was wonderful to see it all refurbished inside, one of Wrights top houses.
Tour was great
Go visit next spring after they have completed all the interior renovations.
Interesting example of Frank Lloyd Wright architecture. Dissapointed that due to construction on good part of house our tour was limited. No reduction in entry fee.
A wonderful example of FLW's earlier works. It's really interesting going from seeing Falling Water to this location. Very interesting, beautiful examples of prarie style architecture.
Awesome architecture
The most shining example of his work, worth a visit anytime
Beautiful home and example of FLW prairie home. Highly recommend the 9AM pre-opening tour.
Our guide Bryan is soooo good! He is so knowledgeable in everything about Wright and this architecture. We like this tour so much and we will definitely visit more Wright’s work.
Beautiful and well made good history info
Great tour.
Unbelievably awesome
If there's one reason to visit Robie House, this edifice is a prime example of the prairie school of design, developed by Frank Lloyd Wright as a characteristically Midwestern architectural school of design. Though I visited this place on a class trip back in college... that was over a decade ago! Even so, the experience was that memorable.
Very worth it. I wish we could have seen the kitchen but the guide was engaging and knowledgeable. Parking near U of Chicago sucks so plan ahead!
Awesome remodel!
Perhaps the perfect example of Prairie Architecture. The Trust has more work to complete restoration, but it's a great tour. Located across the street from the Univ. of Chicago campus.
Going without knowing anything about Frank Lloyd Wright, I feel like I learned a lot both about him as a person, as well as his style and architecture of the time. Great, informative tour even with the construction to renovate a large portion of the house. Worth a visit if you have an hour or two and you're in the area.
It was a great experience seeing all of the rooms and stuff and they also have a shop here. Very glad I went
Amazing tour of an iconic building. The tour guide was very knowledgeable and went at a good pace. I would have loved to be able to see the kitchen and service quarters to see how the design of that compared to the public portions of the house. Well worth the time and nominal fee.
Informative tour, well done. 100% of your ticket goes to the trust to maintain and restore the house. Immediately adjacent to the U of C campus so make time for a walk through there as well.
Beautiful house. It is currently under construction and several of it's most beautiful rooms are blocked off. You can see into the rooms for the most part, but what you see is certainly not the detail you expect. For now the tour focuses on the upstairs and the kitchen area. If you are in the area frequently, I'd hold off to visit until construction is complete.
Must see.
A beautiful gem of Chicago history. Lovingly restored, the home transports visitors to another age. I highly recommend the guided tour.
Anxious to go back and see it all finished a FLW classic
Under restoration, but still a great representation of the Frank Lloyd Wright architecture style
We took the house tour with Peter who was very knowledgeable and accommodating of all our questions. In fact the tour advertised as 50mins ended up being 75mins as it was so interesting. The house itself is both unique and beautiful with amazing attention to detail and innovative features. Whilst situated in the Hyde Park area its easy to get to from downtown by the L train or bus both of which stop within a few blocks of the house. We took the bus and journey time was about 40 mins. It's a nice area to have a look around too as it's in a pretty leafy district close to the gothic University campus.
An iconic piece of American architecture maintained and beautifully presented by their staff.
its a remarkably artistic masterpiece.
Beautiful.
The Robie house has just been named a place of distinction on UNESCO's list of world heritage sites 2019! We took a tour of this house while visiting Chicago and I could not imagine living in such an architecturally iconic structure! I only wish Frederick's story could have been a happier one.
A must if are interested in architecture. The guided tour is great and necessary. Great experience.
Nice to check out.
Very informative tour. Great house. Better understanding of Wright
Gorgeous house by FLW! Amazing design for the ages
The first living architecture. A must see for every architecture lover!
Interesting place. Great friendly staff
Everyone should see this house. A National Treasure!
Great tour of an amazing piece of Frank Lloyd Wright's work. The tour guide was very knowledgable and informative.
Outstanding tour - we'll worth the trip
Amazing place! Worth the drive and the wait. Make sure you reserve your tickets ahead. And be prepared to need the parking garage.
Really cool and should come to experience by yourself. :)
A masterpiece of Prairie style
Staff were great an helpful. Tour was a well guided by Carol and the hour flew by.
Incredibly informative and intriguing review.
It will be a nice experience when renovations are completed in 2019.
Really good guided tour ! The guide knew his stuf and the price is worth it for such a special house by Wright.
Great, restored house and an informative tour.
Renovation is amazing
Great museum!
I've always wanted to visit this place as we studied about it in architecture class. FLWwas simply a genius and I am so glad to see the interpretation of his genius in person.
I'm a lover of Stainglass Art, so I am satisfied Everytime. I know you won't be disappointed either. One of the simple, extravagant talents I have is Stainglass Art Making. I'm in good company.
Wonderful tour and presentation. Part of the house was under renovation
If you like Frank Lloyd Wright's architecture then you will love the tour of this place. The guides were very knowledgeable and spoke other languages if necessary. The restoration process is still ongoing but a lot of it is done. The gift shop had good FLW trinkets and books.
We had a very good your guide who answered everyone's questions intelligently!
Kind of disappointing.... Having been to a number of Wright's buildings this one though important and very impressive from the outside is small and still in the process of being restored.
Fun
What a beautiful home. The tour was lovely, well organized, and very informative.
A very disappointing experience considering that this is one of Frank Lloyd Wright’s masterpieces. I’m glad they’re doing renovations, but it does keep you from seeing the whole house. They offered a $2 ticket to come back once renovations are done, but that doesn’t help out of town visitors. No furnishings other than some FLW designed chairs that weren’t original to the house, which makes it hard to visualize the house as it was. The most disappointing aspect, though, was that our tour guide was terrible. He was very nervous and kept referring to his note cards; it almost felt like he hadn’t had any training at all. The experience and tour are much better at the Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio in Oak Park.
So many beautiful details & so many gorgeous, Franklin Loyd Wright homes within walking distance & without the ridiculous parking prices around Chicago....
Beautiful home! The tour provided a great look into the property's history as well as Frank Lloyd Wright's work. Home is in the process of renovation. The guide on our tour of the Rookery suggested viewing the Robie House while the University was on break; a tip we really appreciated.
The tour is very educational. Great staffs. A must for architectural afficionados.
Very informative tour. I enjoyed it. Definitely recommend!
Great tour! Take the private one for any rooms and much more information. Our tour-guide Leo was great at all.
What an experience! I finally visited the house that I only knew by the photos. The guided tour of the house is really worth it. The guide tells lots of interesting stories about the architect and the history of the house, etc.
This beautiful museum was once a private residence and now is part of the University of Chicago campus. It is well worth a visit to tour and learn its history. The Hyde Park area that grew up around it in the early 1900's is such a lovely neighborhood to explore as well from 59th to 53rd Streets.
Worth a stop. Gives you a feel for austere design as well as F.L.Wright's vision. Nice to appreciate his style but would have been hard to live in.
The tour of Robie House was informative and wonderfully inspiring. Interestingly, seeing the Robie House brought us full circle to FLW's final design from seeing his first design - his home & studio. Debbie was a fun, informative, and enthusiastic interpreter/guide!
This was a dream of mine. Marked off my bucket list. Beautifully crafted and designed. It's easy to see why this house was rated in the ten most significant structures in American but the American architectural Institute. Just don't go on Tuesday because they don't do tours on Tuesday. Definitely worth the visit!!!
Current renovation restricts your tour to only half the home. Very knowledgeable docent.
Amazing staff and wonderful volunteers. The tour is extremely interesting and informative, you get to see the house at your own pace with the guide and the gift shop has some wonderful items. They are currently going through a renovation but don't let that keep you from going - it's totally worth it.
07/2018 Such a beautiful house, the lines and feats of architecture really make it so gorgeous. Unfortunately they were doing a lot of restoring and construction so we were able to see everything, but I would love to go back when it is all finished.
Interesting tour to learn about the pinnacle of prairie style architecture. Amazing that it's the oldest building in sight from the nearby street corner!
Tour spoilt by the docent who shouted at a family for taking pics of an empty room (who wants to take pics of a room full of tourists?) and who failed to answer any questions in a satisfactory manner. I know she's doing it for love but we paid for a tour and the docent should have half an idea of what they're talking about.
Love seeing Frank’s work! Falling water Meyer May Racine Wi
Seemingly always under renovation, but still a masterpiece of modern architecture. Tour is thorough.
Maste Piece when i hadn´t been there. HyperMaster Piece once you visit it.
Our tour guide was lovely. We really enjoyed seeing this beatiful home. It was under restoration while we were there. We found the Dana House in Springfield was a much larger home. Both good examples of Wright's work.
Although it is far from downtown, you will get to the Robie House after a nice walk through the university campus. Important to note that if you want to visit (inside) it is only possible to do so with a guided tour.
I was wowed by how innovative the architect was for his time. Even by today's standards the house is breathtaking
We toured the house on April 2019, and it had just been reopened after a restoration. We chose the "A Modern House" tour, which is the basic one and it was very comprehensive. Frank, out guide was very knowledgeable not only of the history of the house and of FLW architecture, but he provided a lot of social context which helped understanding some of the choices that were made. It is a less "intimate" experience compared to the tour of his own house and studio in oak Park, but it is a lot more focused on FLW's vision of how architecture should be. The tour is approximately one hour long. Backpacks, drinks and food not allowed in the house. Small purses can be carried. Parking may be hard as the house is in the middle of University of Chicago, so plan accordingly ( there are some closed and opened parking options around). We parked in the North Parking Lot and it is a nice 10 minutes walking from there. If you go before lunch and want to grab some food after, Medici On 57th nearby is a nice spot, with a very diverse atmosphere and good food. Obviously recommended!
A must for architecture students!
Beautiful can't wait to see full restoration!
Great tour. Knowledgable guides. Some rooms are under renovation, but still a lot to see
Amazing home, and the docent Peter was very knowledgeable and friendly. He stayed after the tour to answer all questions. Incredible, incredible home!!! The restoration was amazing
Loved it great house
Interesting piece of archetectural history.
Recently named a UNESCO world heritage site. A house as a UNESCO site, that's saying something. Well worth the visit just a short drive or bus ride south of Chicago. It really doesnt matter if you're an architecture fan or not, you will learn something from the knowledgeable docents on this tour. The house is in a prairie slash arts and crafts style with Japanese influences. It's not that big of a house but the details is where the genius is from painting the mortar in between bricks to accentuate the linear lines, to the concepts of compression and release at the entranceway, to the use of natural light throughout. FLW paved the way for other modernist architects.
An architectural pilgrimage and world heritage site. One star lost for the significant percentage of spaces that are out of commission due to renovations. Another star lost due to insensitive placement of signage, storage lockers and scaffolding that ruin the potential for photography. Additional gripes for a failure to disclose the above problems when booking, which becomes significant when spending at least $30 in Uber fares and another $30 in entrance fees to visit half the site.
Every Architect should visit as many Wright buildings as possible. The Robie is a classic. It is currently under a heavy restoration, so some parts of the house are not possible to visit. But it is also a great opportunity to see its guts in open air. Totally worth the visit.
So exciting to be at the Robie House and seeing the renovation! So great to see the Dinning Room table back to where it belongs. Great tour!
Nice tour. The tour guide wasn't too friendly but at least she knew a lot about the history of the house. Amazing architecture
Beautiful historic landmark, freshly restored in 2019.
Well worth it, even with the house undergoing restoration. There are always interesting tidbits in Frank Lloyd Wright houses, and seeing this magnificent house in a party disassembled state reveals even more.
Undergoing renovations as stated in web page so can only see part of interior for now. Most are suthentic reproductions but still nice to tour.
The finest example of the Prairie architectural style in Chicago. I highly recommend taking the tour. It's lead by volunteers and it gives you a peek into the house, its beautiful rooms and windows and the story of its inhabitants. However, after paying 17 dollars for the visit I think charging 5 extra dollars for a photography permit inside the house is a bit too much.
Susan was a fantastic tour guide. She really helped us understand the many unique features of the house and Wright's detailed approach.
Beautiful Frank Loyd Wright designed home near the University of Chicago campus. Lovely tour guides with lots of knowledge of this space and his other designs. If you love Wright's work, I would highly recommend attending Wright Plus in the spring. It's a full day of exploring homes that are not opened to the public, plus you can visit his studio and is worth the price of admission.
