I have followed in Hemingway's footsteps around the world to several locations and finally got the chance to visit his birth home in Oak Park this past Sunday. The house is BEAUTIFULLY restored. Our guide showed us a photo of what the living room looked like when the Hemingways lived there and then pointed out the detail in the restored living room explaining how everything was replicated as close as possible to the photo. It was amazing! It definitely makes you appreciate the art of restoring a home to a particular time period. Of course the main highlight of the tour was seeing the room that Hemingway was actually born, which was a bit surreal! Our guide was lovely as well! We could tell he was very passionate about Hemingway! Although I know a great deal about Hemingway already, I loved hearing someone else relate all the facts and details. Thank you to everyone at the birthplace museum! It was a highlight of my trip.

Great to hear about the family influence and history separate from Ernest Hemingway. My tour guide (Larry Christmas) told great stories and made the information come to life through wit and experience! Everyone who works here loves the stories he wrote, the man himself or both! It shows in how they talk about the family (the main focus of the museum), how they talk about Ernest Hemingway's real life stories and how they talk about the books written by him! Very passionate people in an interesting museum!

The museum's one time admission charge was great for us, since we did not have time to visit the museum and the house in one day, and we are now able to return any time within the next year. We loved the volunteer who greeted us at the door, Connie. She was so enthusiastic and knowledgeable. I can definitely see us visiting again for an event.

So, finding myself in Oak Park with nothing much to do, I looked up the local tourist attractions. Boom. Hemingway House. Will do. Went with two of my buddies who, actually, are quite up on their Hemingway knowledge. We were the only three people at that time, so they and the tourist guide got into some interesting conversations. These were stilted, however, with her being asked a question and saying 'oh, we'll get to that later in the tour'. Enter the Portuguese tourist group. This is where things got sidetracked a bit, but hey, that's cool. Our two groups combined to form one super tour group and now we're all jockeying for position, trying to sees the sights, irritable babies crying in Portuguese, language barriers, etc But that was all my misfortune. The house was interesting with authentic items purchased from the Hemingway family (with our guide alluding to quite the hefty price tags). Got some history on the family and learned some things I didn't know (for example, a bunch of the Hemingways, not just Ernest, died from suicide. Like, a bunch of them) Saw the room where baby Hemingway was raised, saw the room where baby Hemingway was born, which, coincidentally, could also potentially be the room where baby Hemingway was conceived. One of my favorite parts was the secret hallway between the mom and dad's separate bedrooms. At the time it was the appropriate thing for parents to have separate rooms, but this little walkway connector allowed for nighttime activities (eyebrow wiggle). All in all we were there for over two hours which was way. Too. Long. An interesting visit that I have no need to repeat in the future.

One should beware that the tour is actually about Hemingway's childhood home and life. Much detail is given about his grandparents and parents and siblings, which may be disappointing to someone who hoped to learn about Hemingway, the author. The tour guide was incredibly versed in the life of the man as a child and the home he lived in until the age of 6. It's just not what I hoped for, so for that, 3 stars.

The house is a double treat. For those who are interested in Hemingway there is a tremendous amount of history shared about his early life in Oak Park. For house tour lovers, you get up close and personal to a grand 1890s Queen Anne Victorian - albeit not to everyone’s taste - but an excellent tour in a period-accurate, beautifully restored house. Our docent, Sue, was exceptional!

I've only been to the museum, not to the house or the tour, but overall I'd say that the museum itself is worth a visit. I went in hoping to learn more about Hemingway, his Oak Park upbringing and connections, see some artifacts, etc., and wasn't disappointed. The information and exhibits are interesting and are about what you'd expect for a rather small operation, and the building and location must make it ideal for a stop-in from tourists and visitors (I'm a local). My only suggestion would be for them to more actively promote workshops, lectures, readings, etc. so that it's more of a "living museum." Clearly there is an event space in the back, but it wasn't obvious what it was used for and any upcoming events despite spending an hour looking around the museum.

На входе указанно, что экскурсии набирают раз в час но принципе это происходит чаще. Понятно, что русскоязычных экскурсоводов нет, но дают не плохой текст на русском языке. Пройти в музей без экскурсовода не получится. В музее можно фотографировать. Некоторые вещи сохранились со времени жизни в доме Хэмингуэя. Обстановка очень красивая. В экспозиции подобраны практически все вещи той эпохи. В экспозиции даде присутствуют корзинка с наконечниками индейских стрел и корзинка настоящими человеческими костями. Советую посетить музей . Экскурсия занимает от 30 до 45 мин.

This is a fascinating overview of one man's life, rich in detail and provenance. Volunteers are so helpful, dedicated and knowledgeable. It is tragic that this museum will be closing its doors because of lack of funding and that so many interesting artifacts will be consigned to storage.

Students and military receive a discount on tickets! There is no parking lot but there was plenty of parking along the street. Tours can last up to 40-45 minutes but I asked if the tour could be given in 30 minutes and the docent was courteous to accommodate the time by covering the major points. The house was clean- which is awesome for folks who suffer from pollen/dust/dander. (I didn't cough or sneeze once!) Thanks for reading my review!
