Loved the museum! Loved the info they displayed about the black panther party! Will be back

Maurice Shelton

Great place to go to learn about African American History. Particularly in Chicago and in the U.S. Great place for the children to tour. They have group tours with very informed guides.

Ricky Pruitt

Small and short on history but still fascinating. If you never been. You should at lease go once.

Scott Windham

The Mayor of Chicago Herald Washington exhibit was fascinating I watched all 3 segments

Max Knighten

Very accommodating and polite staff, great music, waiting to try out the food!

Sallie Ross

Really enjoyed the evening, I've known Quinton for years he's my daughter's best friend, he's a very talented young man.

Wendi Barnard

African Americans citizens have never received the thanks or respect that they deserve here in America. Even though Barack Obama was president, we still have a long way to go. This is a great place to learn about the sacrifices and amazing things that the African Americans have done for the USA and themselves. The museum tour guide was very informative.

Jasmine

I went to a sold-out performance of theirs where they spoke about the growth of African-American music and it was a lot of fun and they did amazing I think it's a good place to learn about the history of African-Americans.

PR Bush

The exhibit on Mayor Washington is not to be missed

Adrian Williams

Interesting exhibitions. Unfortunately, the Harold Washington exhibit was closed for renovations.

Jay B

From the creativity of the art pieces to the educational historical facts, this museum is a must see! I truly enjoyed my time in this place and plan to go back when the newer museum opens.

Hera Shakir

The staff is very friendly and engaging. The exhibits are spectacular. They cover topics from the diaspora in Chicago to South Africa.

Elmore Ross

Great place to learn about stuff

Kimberly Carlos

The Dusable Museum always has programming that informs, educates, and entertains audiences across geographic and socioeconomic boundaries. I was pleasantly educated and entertained based off of a performance of some of Langston Hughes' works. It was superb. The cast and ensemble worked well together.

Kenneth Purscell

Loved (and learned from) the WWI exhibit. Keep up the good work!

Fredrick Caldwell

Loved it!!! Just wished that the building was larger with more displays

210Squad Forever

They complained with everything we did and we felt angered by that and they told a student that accidentally leaned on an artifact for them to rudely get up he apologized and they didn’t care. They told us to sit on the floor and provided no seating but then told us to get up when a whole other school was basically laying on the floor. They told the kids that were quietly looking at a painting to move when no one was there. They told us to stop blocking the stairway when we were almost two feet away from it. Then they told me to rudely move from the stairwell and I was almost by the door i was so angered and I don’t recommend this museum to anyone. It was a waste of money.

Allyson Ingram

A very fine museum which does deep dives into its primary subject focus with warmth and depth. I loved the exhibit on the Illinois Fighting 8th. So much work goes on to bring these stories into our current lives.

Brenda Pious

A historical gem. So very relevant and worth multiple visits.

Steven Kemp

this was an extremely well curated museum. I really enjoyed learning about the history of all the Chicago natives and all the Haitian influence that has been a part of the growth of that City. I learned a lot and there were a lot of modern pieces which were added. The curator of the modern section has done a really really good job of opening a lot of opportunities to see little known African American artists at work. A lot of the museum relics are some I thought I would not see in the Chicago area, but they had them! I could havebenefited from a little bit more of the Emmett till story, but it might not have been available at the time. But I hope to go back and see more!

LONNIE SIMS

very interesting, would like to see more exhibits

Ian Joe

The Museum could definitely hold more exhibits but the exhibits that it holds are meaningful parts of history.

Gio Lewis

The DuSable Museum has jazz in the park and there was pleanty of jazz lover's there. The bands were fantastic and the wheather was great. Looking forward to next year.

Chad Konieczny

This is a fantastic museum. I would have likely given it 5 stars, but it's under construction, so I gave it a 4. Great place to learn, celebrate accomplishments and see history from the perspective of African Americans.

Rochelle Williams

Historic museum overlooking lovely park hosting onsite events. Featuring summer outdoor events such as live jazz series, dancing and civil war re-enactments on the front lawn. Indoor special exhibitions thru out the year. Modestly priced membership and entry. Limited lot parking, some street parking.

Dawn Sherwood

Powerful exhibits everyone should see.

Daren Lee

So much to see, so much history that normally does not get shared. Takes the time to explore the significant role of African Americans in Chicago..refreshing to hear/see our people's story told with the reverence that it deserves.

Connie Lyons

This museum has a Great musical venue. That's why we were there. Wonderful concerts are held there.

I loved every inch of this place, even the "underground railroad" we went through because of the construction, the staff is great it's so warm and friendly you feel like you've been going there for years. I've only been one time but I'll definitely keep coming!

Demiah Bryant

One of the most underrated museums in Chicago! You gotta visit the DuSable, Harper Theater ,and Museum of Science and Industry... Wonderful place to learn about our experiences as an individual, a human being, an Illinoisan and as an American; from a Black perspective.

STCF Poetry & Moore

Students expressed that they enjoyed the museum and they learned so much. I myself always enjoy the museum when I visit. So many beautiful works of art, historical artifacts, history, and works of art that are conversational starters in this museum. Also bought this shirt from the gift shop!

Katie Freund

An amazing museum that is not only affordable but offers exhibits that are relevant and extremely well done. The paper dress exhibit is one that had such an impact one I truly will never forget it. So thankful this spunky hidden gem exists

Robin Hardaway

The only historical data and artifacts.

Zo Wesson

It is a crown jewel of knowledge on the Southside of Chicago.

Zavier Bookard

I always love exploring the history of my people in different cities.

Carla Jackson

Nice and clean place to have event.

Joe Eckols

Loved the service and the history. Exterior needs better up keeping.

Deb Martell

This was an eye opening museum--particularly on the history of slaving in the "new world". I would recommend starting your time in this museum on the lower level at the slaving exhibit.

Emily Ann

Loved the place, great exhibits, great staff, but the anamotronic mayor was very creepy and may haunt my dreams, very great exhibit, but robot people are creepy

Sheila Gilmore

Was there for Jazz concert. Very relaxing atmosphere.

Valton R Johnson

A must visit place if you are in CHICAGO. African American history in that area. I learned a great deal of history here.

Preston Leigh

This museum is small but it captured my attention. Prior to my visit I was unaware of the extent of Dr. Margaret Taylor-Burroughs' sacrifices and contributions in Chicago. There are some topics I felt could have been developed more in the presentation. There are obvious signs of plans for expansion of the museum which I hope to see. Hopefully the expansion will include interaction for children.

Vernell Norman

Never been there you would have to go there they have all the pillows there and all the information you need on black history

Deborah Cooper

1st time here, nice seating only wish that seats are accessible for handicaps

Renae M. Gordon

The Administration needs to add more to this contribution to the African American history and culture. The exhibits that are there are great, needs more maybe a tribute to the ONE AND ONLY Black President.

Carol Powell Lewis

While I did joyfully encounter 'her story", Dr. Margaret Taylor-Burroughs; her talent and life work in bringing "the only major independent institution in Chicago established to preserve and interpret the historical experience and achievements of African Americans", to life. I walked away feeling as if a huge chunk of the African American experience had been omitted. Such a history and culture is soo rich, diverse, complex, hidden, organic and powerful/painful yet, this beautiful museum provided a foretaste of some of the experiences the Negro in America. The staff members were very professional and friendly and especially the beautiful sisters in the gift shop. There's lots to see and read with one powerful exhibit not suitable for minors.

Michael Johnson

Good place to visit great learning experience

Phyllis Felts

Very nice museum with highlights of momentous events in American Black history. Nice size, not too big so as to not be overwhelming.

Roy Owens

Wonder place for music more.

Tracey Ladner

First rate African-American history museum with unique Chicago perspective.

Julian Rafael Hassan Roden

We got a lot of work to do.

Kimberly Peterson

Was here for a special event. The event was great, their security/traffic staff not so much. While most of the confusion and challenges getting into the museum was not their fault (the Bud Bilikin parade was earlier that day). They could have assisted more! Maybe better signage or something. CPD was posted directly next to the entrance, DuSable staff could have very easily let them know that an event was about to take place to 1)make them aware 2)clear up the confusion. Worst part was that their outdoor parking attendant was literally steps away from CPD post. She could have very easily let them know what was taking place so that each car that pulled up would not need to explain.

Dharkcast Channel

This is an amazing museum. It must be preserved at all cost. The program today was creative and well planned. This museum is a must see when you are in Chicago.

Tre Everette

DuSable Museum is a little gem on the Southside. It is adjacent to the University of Chicago and down the street from another Chicago favorite, the museum of science and industry. The annual MLK event is an excellent event for the whole family. Short films, movies, button making tables and other crafting events. They also have a mobile learning van to bring culture to events.

Romaro Nelson

Very informative! Family enjoyed the experience!!

Brent Kennedy

The experience was decent, honestly the only thing bad about it was the gift shop. 1 Star

Ash Rieee

Lovely place. Not too big so you are able to take your time and experience all exhibits, some of which are interactive. I will definitely return when I'm passing through again

darlene anita scott

I don't know why I anticipated that the Museum would be so much larger and grander. Nonetheless it's packed with history though I couldn't spend as much time with materials as I wanted due to the two large groups (one was mine) visiting at the same time. I especially enjoyed the Chicago Black Panthers artifacts on view. Disappointed by the exhibit under construction.

Shirley Taylor

Always love going here because I can always find out something new or of interest about Afro Americans even before we were considered Americans not humans for that matter. Enjoy the arts and crafts and the entertainment

Rudresh Ranaswi

I am not a museum person but looking at the history and reading about some of the facts, this place is really worth visiting at least once and you will not be disappointed

D Jackson

This place is amazing! It was very informative with regards to the black soldiers during the war & their contributions. There are beautiful works of Black artist I wasn't familiar with. There's also a new feature with Harold Washington the 1st Black Mayor of Chicago. I really enjoyed my visit. If you haven't been yet it's a must see. Pls take the kids, very educational.

Julius Rhodes

The DuSable Museum is a place for all and every person that lives in and visits Chicago should make it a point to attend and do so regularly. You will be inspired.

Georgann Haeffner

It was a very nice museum. The staff was very friendly. There wasn’t quite so much to see as we might have expected but what they had was nicely done. This is not an interactive museum so not for littles. They did have a couple of video history niches but I couldn’t hear them at all. I’ll go back when they open their other building across the street.

Mark Lacy

A must visit on a trip to Chicago. A must visit.

Raven Campbell

I really love this place, the staff is so friendly and the artifacts are very accurate representations of black culture. The perfect place to have a weekend adventure with the kids. I brought two toddlers and had a ball. AMAZING!

An amazing experience. Small but complete. Friendly staff, a hidden gem.

Eliza Melendez

The history in here was great but I wished they offered more.

Crystal Dickinson

This is a small museum with big impact! I was inspired by Ms. Burroughs legacy and moved by the African American History in this hidden gem. There is a wonderfully curated exhibit on slavery and migration. Please support this institution and its mission with your presence!

Glenise cross-story

Historically speaking , its simply the Best

Nehemiah Dacres

It's not just a gallery of paintings and sculptures, it has historical Letters and poems from people thinking about what it means to be black

Sobuj Khan

Great educative place

V Talley

Very lovely venue; special program was well served.

Oacia Fair

I really enjoyed this museum and I appreciate they commemorated local black men and women. The museum displayed many aspects of African American culture from portraits to artifacts. The staff were really nice. I enjoyed the story-telling booths as well. The artifacts the narrators were describing were displayed in the museum. That will make everyone see what is truly going on which allows being to be sympathetic to our history.

Sharon Turner

"The Color of Art" series for Black History month is a MUST SEE! Featuring Chicago's own, Jesse Howard! Phoenomenal documentary and art exhibit!

CL Parks

It's a museum filled with history and art. A lovely place to visit. There is something new every time I visit.

Benny Haugland

Not that much to see in this museums but still a very nice place to see and spend a really good time.

Nikhil Samuel

Great museum. It tells. A very important story using exhibitions that display works of art, cultural relics and historical items. It is sort of similar to the African American history museum in Washington DC however the theme of this museum is more relevant to Chicago.

Tina Retic

I plan on going there very soon have not been there since I was a teenager!! Can’t wait to see the amazing Museum for OUR people!!

Alistar Lavonia

This is a very nice museum. The place is well-maintained and there are lots of things to see and appreciate here. The staffs are also friendly.

Raquel Nashe

Corrie Carter

Visited Chicago for the first time..I love the culture. This museum was very nice.

Ron Dwayne

A wonder place to learn about African-American history which is also American history... As significant as learning about black American history is, schools for a poor job teaching. White establishment would rather forget about their cruelty toward blacks and their inhumane culture. The DuSable museum gives truth about history.

Marcia Bullock

My first visit ever but definitely not my last. I will return as the museum expands. The Harold Washington exhibit is awesome.

cassandra thomas

Small bet very informational

M Mcclendon

This was a wonderful place to visit. We are from Omaha Ne

Sandra Jordan

A Gem that needs to be highlighted more

pauline sachar

I wanted to like this museum more but it needs to be updated and filled with more black history. Chicago is full of music, art, and cultural heritage and history and this museum should be able to reflect more of it.

Lady Linda

Excellent!!! There was a fantastic tribute to Harold Washington!Truly enlightening exhibit about African American participation during WWI. Also, profound poignant though heart-breaking presentation on the race riots of 1919!

Amber Bernard

Finally a place on Chicago that mentions the black cultural influence throughout the years

Amber Smith

Harold Washington's display was AWESOME!

Dave Yang

Quaint museum that highlights different parts of African American history

Google User

Staff was very nice. The museum was very informative. Make sure to stop by the museum's shop with Ms.Zandra Hayes. She has awesome and affordable gifts

louise deberry

Good location for events and close parking which is located in the community.

Martha Dube

I brought my sister and my 1 year old daughter here. The best customer service from Alice and Lily! My daughter was crying because she was hungry and Alice and lily were so accommodating to me and my daughter and her needs while waiting in line. They gave her a small bowl of fruit to keep her occupied. It's the little things that count. I appreciate it more then you know! Thank you

Wilma Holloway

It's hard to believe this museum was started in a house...that's what determination will do! Awesome place and is a must see!

Cheryl butler

A great place to obtain knowledge of Black Heritage.

Mary Mitchell

A totally wonderful experience...relaxing and entertaining!

Gail Mitchell

Well worth the visit with so much educational information that is still invisible in American public schools.

Nat K

I feel like DuSable Musuem has been forgotten by a lot of people in the area. It has a nice set of art pieces and items from history. Some of the things are in need of a revamp. The Harold Washington animatronic needs repair but it does the job enough. We still get the history of his legacy. Other exhibit pieces the sound is not good and the tv kept flickering. If I had the money I would donation to the museum so they could do these much needed updates. This museum contains a valuable set of history but I think we as a public have been neglecting it. Go visit, go donate, and preserve this unreplaceable history.

Araba d

I love this place I learned some of black African American. You should go to see.

Cee Jones

Visiting The DuSable Museum is a wonderful experience. The museum chronicles not just the history of African-Americans in America, but the history of AMERICA. VISIT the Museum and learn YOUR history.

Executive Director

Tracey Williams is the best. Pleasant personality, beautiful spirit..

leen vansteenkiste

very interesting museum. spend quite some time there

Isabelle Cassagnol

Nice exhibits for a small museum. A great range of pieces from slave times and the civil rights movement.

Huggyse Armand

Pros: nice pieces & beautiful visuals. Recorded pieces were informative. Cons: there should have been a tour guide for presentation and to answer questions or give directions. Also a guide could have kept the other visitors more silent. I am not sure why they did not have a gift shop to sell memorabilia’s. There wasn’t even a brochure to take with us. There were several security guards there; more security than any other staff which sends a silent message.

Adrienne Irmer

Love, love, love the outdoor summer programming at the Du! And the new exhibits are awesome!

Tony B

It was a different experience. Looking at the manilla's, slave ships, and watching the videos. It was great to connect with my history

Tiffany SO

Going into the DuSable museum, one would expect to be going into a library of African-American history, however we were surpised at how bare the museum actually was. I was expecting to learn more about African-American's Great Migration experience to the Chicago area. I thought this museum would focus a lot on that aspect of Black history or even the life of Jean Baptiste Point DuSable for whom the museum is named after. There was a lot of information about the founder of the museum however. We did enjoy the Mayor Washington exibit. That was pretty cool to learn about his contributions to Chicago. And there were some great artifacts in the [Journey to Freedom] exibit downstairs. Although there is definitely the potential to add more historical data, art, pictures, stories, exhibits etc to fill this museum, I would still recommend supporting it by visting when in Chicago.

patriciajbkbbjb gibson

Awesome location for current and past events.

cj ussov

Disable museum love to come here, love the feeling of this place. Take your friends and create memories

Paul Patrick

Really nice and educational museum. I appreciate the effort that was put into this museum. Something that is valuable to the community. I enjoyed my visit.

Michael Parker

U have 2 see this place. Great

LaShelia Wells

Will Keith

Boring. This Museum should have a lifesize model of a SLAVE SHIP.

Portia Sullivan

Great place to learn about Black history. The exhibit to honor Mayor Harold Washington was just incredible.

Ella Katz

This museum is such an educational place to go, especially for the times now, its important for people to be educated about the African history in our country. Some exhibits may be sensitive for younger children, but it is overall an amazing museum.

Jacqueline Lee

It was a beautiful experience.

Arthur Lewis

Always a good stop off spot, both outside and in

Kenneth M. James Sr.

That is an amazing place, and the staff is awesome as well.

Francisco arias

paris tyler

An important museum. Thought provoking, relevant and educational.

BRETT BATTS

I started looking at art a lot different when I started going there very good stuff

roderick russell

I enjoyed myself excellent

Buddy Ambrose

the People that work here are rude and they told us that “we were touching things” and the security guard wanted to kick us out because we had a lot of kids and the other teacher was helping a student take there medication. this museum is nice and all but the people that work here are very rude and disrespectful, also the security guard made up lies and said “they were picking up stuff” and they kicked the whole class off the exhibit therefor the I dislike the workers, but the museum is better. The workers are very disrespectful and mean, GOOD DAY.
