At this moment the firm gets a rating of 4.7 stars out of 5 and the score has been based on 382 reviews.
You may have noticed that the average score it has is basically the highest, and it is founded on a very high number of feddbacks, so we can say that the valuation is very reliable. If people have bothered to evaluate when they've done well, it works.
You know that we do not usually bother to put tatings when these are positive and we usually do it only if we've had a problem or issue...
This Museum belongs to the category of Museum.
Great museum for people who love writers and writing! There is a small section for kids and children's literature. It's a great place to go and read. My favorite part was the writer's portion, where you can try your chance on old typewriters, it makes you realize how much you rely on spellcheck and auto fill.
This Museum is a hidden gem for anyone who enjoys or has been influenced by American writers. It's compact but extremely informative. Right now there's a Dylan retrospective that I found mildly interesting. But the design and the interactive access to information is very well thought out and executed. There's even a children's section, which of course as an adult I had to visit. Maurice Sendak? You can type on some old manual machines that are adjacent to the exhibit of actual typewriters used by noted authors. Not to be missed IMO.
Excellent cultural asset for Chicago and the whole country. Well-run nonprofit.
Amazing exhibits. Interactive too.
This small museum is a gem. It's about who WE are, as discerned through the writing of a diverse group of writers. It's also about writing, what makes it powerful, what makes it move us. You'll come away feeling uplifted, a gift in these distressing times.
Fascinating museum. They managed to pack quite a bit of content in, considering the space is not that big. Loved the Bob Dylan exhibit. Highly recommended for anyone remotely interested in American writing and its history.
Loved the Dylan exhibit! A great place to reconnect with your inner writer!
An oasis of peacefulness within the city.
This place is amazing. Plan to hang out awhile in the readers room and play with the typewriters. Get inspired.
This place is fantastic!
Great Bob Dylan exhibit now through April 2019
Great little museum! Looks small but pack a ton of information. You'll need around 2-3 hours to see/read everything.
Nice museum but would like to see more original material
Worth every minute spent here
Top notch programming
Magical and inspiring. My family (including 10 and 7 year olds) loved every bit of our experience. Highly recommended.
Very nice little museum. All the little interactive pieces make if fun for all ages.
I loved this museum. Even though it's small, it has a lot to offer. Especially if you want to be writer
Give yourself plenty of time.
Great place to expand your knowledge of American writers and authors
Had a great experience. Enjoyed the exhibits
Interesting and highly entertaining! There are interactive bits all throughout the museum with trivia, games, and move this bit for more information. We really enjoyed the typewriters and story canvas stations. Must see, even if you only remotely like the written word or history.
This place is an amazing addition to the wonderful museums in Chicago. The staff is also very helpful.
We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the museum. It's so interactive and there is a ton of great information. Definitely don't try to hurry through. Take your time and check out everything! We didn't bring any kids but the room about children's books is wonderful. This is absolutely worth the visit. I highly recommend it.
I think you should go! This was the main thing I wanted to do on my most recent trip to Chicago. I've been enjoying several kinds of writing for a while now, so I was curious what I could learn and enjoy here. They do have a couple exhibits showing historical things (incl. how public libraries got started!), about half of the place dedicated to all sorts of writers and their works, and then interactive exhibits. Definitely a fun and interesting place. I also learned about a couple classics that I need to read that I'd so far figured I wouldn't enjoy (mainly Death of a Salesman). Maybe you'll find something, too!
This place is a must see
Lots of really cool stuff and there are type writers to play on which I found fun
Great, incredibly interactive museum. Highly recommended.
Really good museum for anyone who likes words.
I absolutely enjoyed The American Writers Museum. It was so interactive & enjoyable. I spent about 3 hours going through the museum. I read for an hour in their "reading" room; they didn't mind! Definitely returning on my next trip to Chicago!
A nice museum, if a bit small. It's a nice way to spend an hour or two if you are a literary buff.
Great Museum! Small, but impressive. Loved the interactive elements. And the tiny gift shop has wonderful selections.
Interesting place. Attended for a retiree. Had little change to read all materials. Definitely will come back with more time.
Great museum, if you like to read as one would assume most patrons of the American Writers would. Amazing digital art, fun interactive exhibits, nice staff, great location for tourists. As I local I took an Uber from the north side to avoid the expensive parking. Wonderful trip, helped me make a better informed must read list. Would definitely return over and over again.
Great museum for people who like to read. Admission is very reasonable!
Love love love love love.
A wonderful hidden gem in Chicago! A must see for fellow writers, those who enjoy writing and a place where you are such surrounded by the history and stories of American literary giants. They also have a fantastic children's section!
Excellent small museum about writing and writers and creative people in general.
If you love American literature, it is a place to go. But if you like literature, you have the time, it is worth a visit. You can indirectly experience how American writers get inspired and made their work. You can also write directly using various types of typing machine.
Really enjoyed the museum, which was a unquie experience. Spent a couple hours there with my daughter who had a great time using the typewriters. I thought it would be nice to leave a review with sentence fragments and run-on sentences; enjoy.
This is a very well done exhibit. The subject doesn't, on the surface, lend itself to a museum but the curators have taken up that challenge and the result is quite amazing. You'll likely be intermixed with a lot of school groups, too.
All the hands on exhibits are wonderful...children couldnt believe there were such things as typewriters!
I had the good fortune of working in the same building as the American Writers Museum and was so impressed with it upon my first visit that I decided to take out a membership. This museum is a great place to come for both inspiration and solid reading recommendations. For me, being normally influenced by international writers of global genres, the American Writers Museum is a good place to come to center myself on writers from my own Nation-State, the United States, and writers pivotal to our national history. I recommend sitting down and taking the time to read from some of their books on display and allowing ample time to slowly meander down their timeline. For me, this museum is an important place, because I would rather be well-versed in the writings of Frederick Douglass before knowing those of Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, but ideally to know both of the two: writers both of the domestic sphere and the international, or global variety, but first to know the American. To know thyself before others. I highly recommend this museum.
Perfect Place for a Reader. This museum has an entire wall with mini-stations floor reading about famous American authors, as well as some fun interactive exhibits. On display in September 2019 were the typewriters of famous authors and a fabulous collection of Dylan memorabilia with videos to view & audio listening stations, records, magazines, and memorabilia. Best exhibit are the large broadsheets about Chicago-born and based authors, newspapermen & women and activists. That exhibit is permanent. Large reading space. A++
This is a Bibliophile's Paradise!
A must visit place for writers. I also liked Bob Dylan section
Fantastic Lesser known museum in Chicago. I really loved it.
Good exposure to all American writers! Some games for the buffs and children alike! You can also practice your typewriter skills.
Top notch, loved it, will be back.
Wonderful small museum about American (United States) Writers.
It was a nice place. Lots of writers showcased. I would recommend it.
A hidden gem
The American Writers Museum is a museum of American Literature and writing that opened in Chicago in May 2017. The museum was designed by Amaze Design of Boston. The new museum was inspired by the Dublin Writers Museum.
Intriguing, thorough, multidimensional. A fantastic experience!
Took my wife and two older boys to the American Writers Museum. Located on Michigan Ave a half block north of Millennium Park. Spent over an hour there. Exhibits are modern, innovative, and interactive. Sucked us in. Both permanent and rotating exhibits. Not the best for young children, but any middle school kids on up will love this place. Great idea to pair it up with other close by attractions like Art Institute, Millennium Park, theaters, or a walk along the river.
Small, but good quality museum. Interactive
Best downtown museum. Perfect for an intimate visit.
This museum is fairly new. It has something for everyone, including children. The displays are varied, interactive, and informative. We had a great visit. There's a small shop where you can purchase unique souvenirs. Anyone that loves reading will find something to enjoy. Highly recommend!
A must-see for all ages, anyone interested in writing and writers.
I like literature and absolutely enjoyed the museum! Made a list of books to read :)
So much fun! A little small but a great way to kill a couple of hours if you're interested in American authors
Very cool. Maybe on the smaller side, but every bit of space is well used.
Great exhibits, awesome interactive media. You will enjoy it whether you came to research, or seek literary inspiration, or take Instagram-worthy selfies with cool writing themed backgrounds.
Great exhibit on Bob Dylan
Beautiful museum for the writer and the reader in me . Very well done. $12 entrance fee was reasonable. You experience the significant authors, essayiste, speech writers, key story teller movers and shakers in American history and it is so well done. Didn’t really care for the Bob Dylan section. He was a singer and then wrote something but a whole wing dedicated to him? Eh. Rest was great. Great great for writers and avid readers.
Great experience, small but powerful. Kids stayed busy with a few of the exhibits
This museum is relatively new. I went for a special event/book signing and was happily surprised. It is literally a gem. I checked out the Bob Dylan exhibition while there, it was fascinating. It is right in the heart of the tourist areas so traffic, congestion, etc., bad for a local like me, good for tourists.
I really enjoyed the atmosphere in the children's section. It brings back memories and there are couches to sit and read books. There are typewriters that people can use. I had a lovely time overall. Writers and book lovers alike will have a great time here!
Great educational resource! Entertaining place as well. Will surely take my daughter here!
Hoping to go there with my friends
Got a wealth of information here on famous writers of America.
Fantastic! There was so much to read about, very interesting.
Cool new interactive museum!
Fantastic modern exhibits that encourage visitor participation. Many different interactive exhibits. An excellent Portrail of the history of writers in Chicago and the rest of the country.
Great experience. Good value. Museum is incredibly interactive
Good for its size. On the second floor of the building.
Like a kid in a candy store I could have stayed here for hours upon hours. Packed with fun interactive and educational exhibits on over 100 influential writers of books, music, poetry, news and much more. The wall of wonders engages all of your senses (sight, sound, touch, and even smell!). Children's section, word games, and two rotaing exhibit rooms are just a bit of the continual never boring elements! A must visit destination in downtown Chicago!!
Fun & interactive. 12$ adult entry. You will learn a new author for sure.
In a place that could be bogged down by plaques, this innovative museum offers amazingly interactive, unique exhibits. A must for anyone who writes or loves writing!
This was pretty good. An overwhelming amount of information on writers. Biggest disappointment was that there was nothing on To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee. That was such an iconic book, not sure why that wouldn't be there. Perhaps they rotate the displays. Good place to bring children. They have some hands on things that kids would like and a lot of info on children's books.
I really appreciated this museum's expanded view of what it means to be a writer -- they include information on not just authors but also songwriters, chefs, and rappers. The graphics used in the displays are interesting and interactive as well. I spent about 1.5 hours here, but you could really go fast and spend less than 45 minutes. Although the information was extremely varied and interesting, it's really only presented at a High School level. A great place for families with young kids, not so much people in their 20's.
A unique and interactive take on the history of American ideas as shown through the written word. Great activity, specially when the weather is not as forgiving in Chicago.
Nice new museum
good info and inspiration
Fabulous, interactive museum. A must-see if you love and appreciate American literature.
Really interesting and informative exhibits. Very fun experience that is a little more off the beaten path. Really good price for what is inside. Would definitely recommend it to anyone looking to do something for around 2 hours.
As a writer myself, I was excited to see this museum. The quality of the exhibits is stellar! There is tons of interactivity to make it fun, and the information shared was truly interesting. Each writer display includes a mini biography, a small excerpt of their work, and a comment from someone who knew them summing up the nature and value of their work. My favorite part was the room full of typewriters that belonged to famous writers, from Hemingway to Angelou. The interactive tables with audio readings was amazing! All of the interactive activities related to writing at first seemed gratuitous, but I did find myself enjoying them. To really enjoy this museum, be sure you have plenty of time to immerse yourself in the abundance of written material! And put yourself in the frame of mind to think, not just hear. The only disappointment for me was that there were not more artifacts from famous writers. Thank you for a wonderful afternoon!
It was not what i was expecting- it was better! Based around writing and the creative process and how writing happens.
If you're a book lover this place is everything. Very interactive and easy to get around. I thoroughly enjoyed my time here.
Great museum, so worth the cost. They have packed in tons of information on all kinds of writers and it's very interactive. Fully approved for your inner nerd!
This museum excelled at creating interactive and interesting exhibits. I could've spent four or five hours here with sustained interest.
Excellent museum
This little museum was highly interactive. They use multiple ways to help people learn- hearing, reading, even displays that are a bit more tactile/ interactive. They have touch screen displays and a wall of quotes that are a mix of audio, script etc on the source if you flip it. Very cool. Loved the Frederick Douglass room that even had QR codes that link to an online source.
This is a great place to go if you want to relax and enjoy history.
Neat museum, Dylan exhibit great
The writer in me was inspired. (Bring pen and paper!) The literary enthusiast in me geeked out. I love this place! Went with my sister and was enthralled from the moment we walked inside. I loved the Bob Dylan exhibit, which was a wonderful reminder and exploration of what it means to be a writer. The typewriters were a highlight of my visit. I've never used one before, and found them very inspiring. It was such a special experience to write poetry on a typewriter, where I can't erase and each mark I make is permanent. I definitely recommend a visit to all who love writing, reading, and all things books.
A fascinating experience, which they have built around a number of creative, interactive exhibits. It is very informative about the history of American writing, and they have an inclusive perspective, which is enlightening about many of the writers to whom we were not usually exposed in school. Most of the exhibits are very concise, which makes the visitor feel as if she has had the chance to absorb some of the most salient facts about each of the writers without being overwhelmed by masses of data. The exhibit which asks the visitor to choose her favorite writers and books can use some work, because it doesn't have a very large list of works from which to choose, and the user interface is clumsy. On the whole, however, this museum offers a unique way of interacting with the history of American writing, and is worth an hour or two of your time.
This was an amazing experience. There were typewriters which really appealed to the children.
Really enjoyed this place. Unfortunately we were there only two hours, but we plan on going back to get the full experience. If you have any interest in American novelists, journalists, poets, etc. I highly recommend the American Writers Museum.
The kids LOVED IT! Especially the typewriters
My out-of-town guests enjoyed it.
beautiful place`
Small museum that you can see in an hour of you have some time to kill. Will give you some ideas of books/authors that should be added to you reading list. Don't set your expectations too high though.
I had a wonderful time with the children on a field trip!
The most interactive museum I've ever been to! I really loved it. So informative and fun. A great place for kids and adults.
Fun place to visit. Loved the writers party with the bourbon May I Have Another. Yummy.
This museum is a joke. It should be free because there is absolutely nothing there! It is very small and all you can see are the photos of the writers and some short explanation of their works! Paid $12 for nothing! Extremely disappointed! Don't understand why other people like it so much. Should not be called "a museum " - not a single one exhibit there!
This is a nice little museum right on the main street near other Better known Chicago attractions. It’s very interesting and well put together. Worth the visit if you have extra time in Chicago. The list of American authors is both informative and interesting.
Wonderful place that celebrates American authors. Lots of interactive exhibits. And there's a children's room
Wonderfully interactive and fun. The staff was friendly and helpful.
Fascinating place for readers and authors. Allow a couple hours minimum. We only had an hour and could've enjoyed this place much longer. A real gem.
Plenty of resources and exhibits.
Very nice small museum. Very interesting exhibits.
Loved this place. Fun to learn about the writers! We only had one hour. Could have easily spent more time.
A great space for literary fans. I loved the "Word Waterfall" and the bay of working old-fashioned typewriters!! There are many interactive parts to the museum as well. The special exhibit focused on Bob Dylan. The gift shop is small but well appointed. There is a $12 admission fee and only a student discount.
Super cool exhibit. Brought in authors to the exhibit that I did not realize it even think of as authors. Very well put together. Very quiet. Had a neat interactive exhibit that you can contribute to as a museum guest. Things start off arranged in chronological order by timer period, and give examples of authors from different genres, including women and minorities. Even brought out some things I didn't consider real writing. Sometime when I have more time I want to go back and slow down, read more of it
Really fun, will visit again in near future
Little squirrels storytime is so cool ~ we love it!!!
I took my girlfriend that is a writer and she absolutely loved it! I am not as into this stuff but I enjoyed everything about this museum when I walked in. There are so many interactive pieces and things to get anyone excited about writing. There were funny dialogue generators, a word game you could play with others, and even typewriters for people to write their own or continue another's story. Even if you don't think you're into writing, you've made the wrong choice if you skip this museum.
Very informative. One can be really proud of the American authors and the literature they created. As a senior I only paid $8. 00 for the privilege
We spent an entire day at the American Writers Museum, and hope to go back again with our grandchildren. We were lucky to have the opportunity to enjoy the Edgar Allen Poe Tour, and found our guide to be highly knowledgeable. We’ve recommended this museum to many of our friends in Bloomington, Illinois. Thank you, Chicago, for another wonderful cultural destination!
Something I was, unknowingly, waiting for. Literature--the highest of the arts. Well represented here--unless you're looking for Virginia Woolf, but wait, she wasn't an American so my favourite writer wasn't here. I will still give it five stars for being the only museum of its kind in the world. Guess I need to make a trip to London.
What a beautifully-conceived homage to Writing on this continent, since Conquest, in its many forms. The special contemplative exhibit on W.S.Merwin's poems-and-trees is stunning, very moving. The museum is dazzlingly contemporary and high-tech, yet manages to be hands on and even old school -- the typewriters, and their live sounds! Just as America can't stoop any lower, get any dumber, this place Arises. Such hope, in the idea of it, the manifestation of it, its inclusivities, intelligence. Thank you, so much.
I did not know much about American writers. Now I know much more and have a list of what to read first! Great place to learn!
Was a nice museum, had fun going through it with my girlfriend. Was only $12 to get in.
An amazing array of American writers literary & song.
Fascinating, l spent all of my time in the Chicago writers area. Need to go back to explore the other sections. Very helpful staff.
Such an impressive and interactice exhibit of American authors over time. The word waterfall, the typewriters, everything was so fun to experience
A hidden gem! I could have spent all day in this intimate, interactive venue. All senses are engaged (except taste!). Set aside at least an hour of your time to escape the hustle and bustle of the city outside. Plan to return over and over again. A visit to the museum will definitely compel you to wipe the dust off of a cherished book and immerse yourself in the prose of a favorite author.
A great small museum for adults and children. Has lots of interactive exhibits, and typewriters which kids love to use. Features information on prominent Chicago writers and has a pretty large reading library, including a kid's reading room. It's included in the GO Pass and is right along Michigan Avenue, so it is great to duck inside for an airconditioned break.
Went on a field trip with our students and it was beyond beautiful. The kids had an opportunity to listen and speak to an actual author Keah Brown and they loves every minute of it. She also signed and gave them each a copy of her book and they enjoyed that too. So much to learn and explore in this museum. I will definitely be returning soon with my family. Ty so much everyone @American Writers Museum we appreciated everything.
Love this museum! Place for you who enjoy any kind of literature, from novel, speech, song, poem, poetry, history of literature, etc. When I visited this museum, they have Bob Dylan's exhibition, which I found it really interesting. There is one section for children (with children books and activity). I also love their 3D lighting in the wall with many pieces of writing. Another favorite section, we can type our own poetry, poem, plot of story and hang it on the wall or let it in the typewriter machine to continued by others. Last thing, I enjoy the interactive part and some motivational quotes by famous writers. Great job and thumbs up for this museum!
What a fantastic museum. I've never been as impressed by the way information is presented. Every exhibit was broad enough to tell a full story and be taken in at face value but also deep enough to dig into.
If you are into literature, this place is a "must see". Not a very big museum but the timeline about American writers is very beautiful and informative. There are many interactive sources as well. The gift shop was excellent and the employee were very friendly.
A real gem. My wife and I just happened upon it. What a wonderful surprise! If you love to read this is a must for you, you won't regret it.
A truly inspiring place where the greatest poets like Edgar Allan Poe have their special spots. There should be more museums like this in Chicago, we as the nation don't read much and that's how we are losing the knowledge of previous generations... The $12 fee seems symbolic, definitely worth visiting.
This is a really nicely laid out museum. Loads of content you can interact with, and lots to read and learn. It's easy to spend an hour here, which is great for the entrance fee. They have restrooms, but no cafe. The shop has a few interesting bits too. Glad I popped in today!
I went there with my 16-year-old granddaughter. I am a writer, she is an aspiring journalist. We both enjoyed it. We spent about two hours wandering around and interacting with the interactive displays. I think our favorite was the typewriters - where you write the first line/paragraph of a story and then the next person adds a line, etc. My granddaughter returned several times to the typewriter she had used to see what people had added. (The museum is thinking about publishing a book with stories visitors have written.) Also, a little perplexed at the reviewer who said there was nothing about Harper Lee - because there was. She was in the timeline with the other well-known authors. If you're at all interested in reading and writing, I would highly recommend.
Family place good to bring kids
A very nicely set up museum right in downtown Chicago. Interesting exhibits cover the history of American writers and poets right from the 16th-17th centuries. There's an exhibit about children's literature too, bundled with some activities which would be interesting for kids. There's a lot of detail that has been put into each author/poet in the timeline display. One of the highlights is the typewriter display which has about 10 different kinds of typewriters where you can either start/contribute to an ongoing story, or just type anything out on the museum letterhead and take it home with you as a cool souvenir! At a nominal entry price and friendly staff, this nice little museum is one of the must see places in Chicago for whoever loves reading.
A unique and informative look into the history of American lit. Worth the visit.
The best museum I've ever visited! With it only being one floor, I assumed it wouldn't take long to peruse; however, the Writers Museum packs plenty of experiential exhibits into one small space to keep a patron busy for at least 2 hours. From trying your hand at typing a letter on an early 20th century typewriter to computerized tables with writing exercises and games, this place immerses the visit into a highly interactive experience. If you're an English teacher, this museum is for you! If you're not, this place is still worth the price of admission.
I absolutely loved this museum. I live 13 hrs away from Chicago, but I am so glad that I was able to fit a visit in here. There were two places I wanted to see - Millenium Park and American Writers Museum. Chicago has a lot of things to see, but I've never seen a writers museum before... close to it would be the Edgar Allen Poe museum in Virginia. But this included more vast exihibits of genres and had many interactive sections. I specifically loved the typewriter area where you can sit and add to a story. The digital tables with word games were fun, too. The Bob Dylan exhibit was fantastic! I spent the majority of my time browsing through just that. If I lived here, I would definitely have a membership and spend much of my free time there.
Excellent place where there is lots to read. You can easily spend around 3 to 4 hours of u are in literature.
Outstanding collection! The museum is interactive. I took my 12 yr. old grandson and we both found something to like (I am 83.) A collection of typewriters you could use. A temporary exhibit featuring Bob Dylan. A reading room with iconic books. Convenient location and parking near Millenium Park. I can't wait to go back by myself!
Interesting, but not much to it considering the entrance fee.
So much info and fun games
Cool place, wished they had some display for banned books.
This is a wonderful museum. It is very interactive (interactive screens, typewriters where you can write your own story, or contribute to what others have started) and they've done a lot to bring writing alive. I highly recommend!
The exhibits are very well put together, very informative, flows thru history nicely.
I am a member and go periodically when the exhibits change. I like the layout of the museum, the interactive sections, the contents of their exhibit. I often go to their events too.
Very complete, small place but interesting and fun
The Bob Dylan exhibit is small but excellent !!
Great museum, probably the cheapest activity you can do in downtown Chicago to occupy yourself for hours inside. Really great exhibits and lots of interactive aspects.
A museum that inspires you to read and write! Also has great exhibits for kids
This is a writer's paradise! It is an amazing collection of literary works and authors' stories. I love the interactive spaces. They brilliantly combine the age old art of writing with modern technology. You will leave there inspired to write and planning to come back.
This was really rad! I enjoyed the Bob Dylan section.
