REVIEWS OF Laupahoehoe Train Museum IN Hawaii

Michele Flaherty

Great for kids and train lovers! Wonderfully preserved train station that now serves as the train museum. A separate annex to run N-scale model engines, a wooden train table on the porch, and an immaculately preserved caboose on the property. Arlene, the volunteer on the day of our visit, was incredibly welcoming and knowledgeable. Lots of documentation inside on the building of the railroads in Hawai'i and history on the 4/1/46 tsunami that hit Laupahoehoe

It was closed when we stopped. Took pictures, two gauges of rail together. Standard and narrow gauge.

Scott Jackson

Small little place but full of Hawaiian train history. For those that enjoy trains and want to learn a little something outside the traditional train history of the mainland. Separate building with model trains. Full size caboose on grounds with view of the ocean.

Take a look at the maps of Old Hilo! This place easily keeps the attention of young kids!

Kieran Lee

Unfortunately the museum was closed when we went as it is open Monday, Wednesday and Friday but we were able to look at the external exhibits.

Peer Linder

Looked pretty closed when we were here during opening hours. However we could walk through the outdoor exhibition a bit, looked quite enjoyable.

Leo Scaturro

Very interested. Lots to look at and the proprietor was very knowledgeable. Worth stopping.

Great to see trains on Big Island, i rated only 3 stars. Main reason, the leg of opening hours.

Would definitely recommend to anyone wanting to learn the history of Hawaii's Railroad. You can see old photos of the rail system and even learn a little about the sugar plantations on the Big Island of Hawaii. It is a little Station Masters former home and grounds are in need of some tlc, but this is a cute stop for any young train enthusiast or anyone wanting to know more about the historical rail system of Hawaii. Self guided tour but the docent was really friendly and helpful with all any questions you may have. 4 stars because I would love to see this place survive and preserve Hawaii's past.

A Dimond in the rough. Beautiful artifacts and information from the history of Hawaii, just a little bit shabby.

Cute little stop. Watch the hours though they may not be open.

Second time visiting and it is a fantastic little gem of a place. The history of the railroad and sugar cane on the islands is disappearing and places like this help keep it alive. They ask for a donation of $5 per person or $15 per group of 3 or more and the card machine wasn’t working when we went in March 2019 but the volunteer who was there was very knowledgeable and friendly. This is a quick stop if you just skim and listen to the volunteer or you could spend hours pouring over all the photos and information, it’s up to you!

Great place to learn about the railroad history of the Big Island.
