This is a neat museum. It's interesting to see how our southern ancestors lived. It is a beautiful house, full of a nice collection of furnishings and memorabilia.

This is a really interesting place that's in need of better interpretive staff. I and my wife's family went there because her mom was interested in seeing, and it was OK. What would have made it great is to have had an on-site interpretive staff with a better academic understanding of the life, times, and effects of Robert Toombs. The staff we found presented material that was more anecdotal than historical.

The Robert Toombs house museum combines all of the best parts of a historic home and a traditional museum, providing a repository for fascinating stories and artifacts while also maintaining a strong sense of the character of the man whose residence made it famous. The ground floor of the museum provides an expansive look at Toombs and his life, contextualizing his roles and influences for which his home was a backdrop. Extensive information is also provided about Toombs' wife, Julia, their children, and the slaves who were essential to the running of the home and plantation. The home itself is expertly decorated and furnished in period appropriate style, conveying at times the sense that one has entered Toombs' residence while he just happened to be out. From the original furniture to the architecture oddities, such as the gasoliers, the home offers a unique glimpse into domestic life during the 19th century. I would recommend the Robert Toombs House Museum as an essential stop for anyone visiting Washington, Georgia, especially for visitors interested in history.

This historic site really reflected the budget cuts our state is facing. They bumped admission up from $3 to $4 and don’t run the heat in most of the building. When we arrived the two staff were upstairs trying to prevent a leak in the roof from damaging the furniture and antiques. It’s a shame to see these places and buildings that hold so much history have to struggle to stay open.

Worth a visit for sure.

Wonderful historic home. Will go back!

Be sure to ask the people working there who Garland H. White was and his role during the war. Fascinating story, very similar start, completely different ending than Alonza Fantroy Toombs' story. (You have to ask because there is no material there about him, which is why only 3 stars)

Southern history is very good.

This was very interesting to me personally because of a family connection. But to anyone interested in the civil war era in general this museum provides an in depth picture of a man who was extraordinarily influential on the politics of the time yet is obscure in the minds of many because historians have largely ignored him. For architectural buffs the house itself has interest. The house and furniture a largely original and the way it was when he died. The displays are simple but very informative. With an admission price of only $5 this is an attraction hard to beat. Be prepared for a ride as this is off the beaten path. The town of Washington has a lot of charm and is a place you could spend time in as well.

Closed with no notice for cleaning during a regular business day. No notice on web site. There was a sign that said if no one was there during business hours call and leave a message no one returned our call. Do not waste your gas. Unprofessional.
