REVIEWS OF Owens-Thomas House & Slave Quarters IN Georgia

Jodi Madison

Very interesting and well informed tour guide.

laura bailey

Went on Steve's birthday. He is awesome. Very knowledgeable. Will definitely be visiting again.

Josh Smalley

Just visited and Kadijah gave us a really great tour. Very insightful about the history of enslaved people in Savannah. Highly recommend a visit.

Benjamin Miller

Wonderful place to understand history of Georgia and the colonial period of US history with a good emphasis on the history of the enslaved.

DarkGhost

I was sad when it was shut down great memories there on the cotton fields

Kim Armentrout

Megan was our tour guide. She was great! Very informative. Did a great job answering questions and paced the tour well. Would definitely recommend. We learned more about the slave trade on this tour than the trolley tour.

Uma Kelleher

This brand news motel 6 are great serving the guess, nice and clean..My sibling and I enjoyed it over night stay. We visited our folks. I recommend...to everyone...

Christopher Long

Well preserved history, and a very informative tour.

Gary Klabunde

The tour guide was very knowledgeable and did a great job of navigatng the very challenging history of slavery in the old South.

Cathy Shoemaker

The house was great. The guide very knowledgeable and friendly. However, when you purchase tickets you have to purchase for The Telfair house and a 3rd museum as well The Telfair house and third Museum are a waste of time and we had no interest and felt ripped off that we had to pay for all three when we really just wanted to see the the one.

Adrian Hobbs

We didnt go in because the admittance fee was outrageous.

Pat Price

Great tour. Learned alot of things I didn't know about 19th century construction.

B

Great tour. Very educational.

Tuula Rebhahn

Great deal! Telfair Museum and Jepsen Center are included in the price of the ticket, and you have a week to visit them all. Glad I saw this detail in another review because it wasn't on the website (as far as I can recall). As far as the museums, they are all excellent. Our tour guide here was very well informed, and you get the sense that a lot of people have worked very hard both to restore/conserve the home and craft the messaging about a complicated period of American history.

M. Kimberly Sende

It’s difficult to rate a historical site, especially one that has such a dark history. However, our amazing tour guide, Daniel, did a great job of tying the history of the Owens-Thomas House to present time. He kept the tour interesting and just humorous enough, as well as answered all of our questions honestly and thoroughly. It was interesting to see how Savannah’s richest colonists lived and to get a glimpse of how urban slavery differed from plantation slavery. There is so much to take in, it’s worth multiple trips.

Eric Boehm

It’s really good and teaches an important lesson. They focus on the lives of the enslaved people during the tour. Some people won’t like that, but only if they are racist and slave owner apologists. We had a couple on our tour who tried to confront the tour guide at the end of the tour. It’s unfortunate because it reinforced negative stereotypes about southern people.

BAC625

The wall with the names of the people enslaved there was so incredibly powerful... as the Vietnam wall must be for those connected to that history.

Wilda Cotney

Beautiful and great informatve guides.

Ashley Roper

This is my absolute favorite house to tour in Savannah. The history here is deep and troubled and interesting and fantastic. Its full of great stories and the guides here make it all interesting. Take as much time as you can to just walk the house alone. It's lovely and the current decor really takes you back..it's easy to think you're in a different time period while you're here.

Neel Madhvani

Interesting home. Read up on your own, guides know very little beyond their script.

Cindy Freeman

This tour came highly recommended by a trolley tour guide. The house was a first of it's kind when built with modern luxuries from England. Our guide was excellent - very well spoken and knowledgeable as well as interesting. This was the only house that we chose to tour and have no regrets.

Christie C

This house is a "must see" for both the architecture and history of Savannah. The tour for this house was the best for describing the lives of all residents of the home. This was also the only home that showed the slave quarters and details about the lives of the elslaved. We toured Davenport and Andrew Low house as well. The ticket price included 3 sites. We didn't have time to do the Tellfair museums because we ran out of time so plan accordingly. Many of the museums close at 5 so if you have multiple houses in your plans budget your time appropriately.

Socorro Delgado

A must visit whenever in Historic Savannah. A fascinating history. Go and enjoy, now with new findings of slave quarter.

John Feringa

This is a beautiful old home with a lot of historical significance. Questions from our group to the guide seemed to be answered with a very unrealistic view of the treatment of the enslaved 'staff'. The question of what would happen to a caught escaping slave is answered with they would be jailed. That doesn't seem likely. Other than that the type was good and the static displays are really informative.

andrew b

Went in with no real expectations but then the history hits you like a ton of bricks right at the start when they show you the slave quarters. Loved the tour and think it's important for people to know this side of history. Would highly recommend the tour.

S. G.

Part of the Telfair Museums historical trifecta, this historical site is worth a visit

Todd Gutowski

Good tour and some cool features in the house. By slave quarters here though, if that is what you are interested in, it is one room at the beginning of the tour.

SarahBeth Benes

A great, unbiased view into American past.

Rick Ragucci

Interesting tour. Love liking back through history in a 200 year house

Kelly Anderson

A neat piece of history. Beautiful house and your was lovely.

Christal Blue

Beautiful well preserved home. Takes special care to highlight the enslaved workers and the history of slavery in the area

Lauren Gedeon

I thoroughly enjoyed the tour by Lacey and seeing this house. There is a bridge inside it! I've never seen anything like it.. such a cool architectural feature. I definitely recommend visiting.

Fon Emer

A great way to learn about this city's history.

Danita Branam

The preservation of both the wealth facades and the underbelly conditions provided for enslaved people is authentically chronicled and explained by docents. Our docent Lacey was exceptionally informative in bringing the reality of the times to the group. Excellent

Talisa Pinckney

The slave quarters has been renovated. There is so much history at The Owens Thomas House. The changes that they have added are unbelievable.

Wendy Serfass

Tour guide was amazing. House was so unusual with some of its features. A must see.

TERRI McDaniel

It was interesting and our guide was very knowledgeable. We loved Savannah and ended up staying an extra day

Stacie Layne

Great guide! Loved the history

Jonathan Scott

Very educational I enjoyed it, they didnt say much about the slaves

Brian Heller

Beautiful house inside and out. The restoration has been extensive to bring it back to it's glory. The tour is short but informative and you are allowed to take all the photos you want (no flash).

Monika van Hoeve

Learned a new word: urban slaves. Must see: bridge in the house. Architectural gem.

Paula Koszarek

We really appreciated this place for many reasons. It helped provide authentic historical information, as hard as it was to hear at times, that would open anyone's eyes and hearts. I was told that it was very recent that they allowed access to the Slave's Quarters. Unbelievable that it had taken that long to do so.

Kat Gardner-Brown

Time travel ! Back before the Civil War. The architect, the fashion of furniture. First house with running water and electricity. See how folks lived. Enjoy. Not a place for children. Just adults.

Bryan Herbst

A fun look into history! Our tour guide was very knowledge and made the tour quite fun! The house itself has been maintained incredibly well, including a beautiful garden. I loved seeing some of the very first plumbing, and they paid a lot of attention to even small details like recreating the original flooring in the main entrance. Well worth the cost of admission.

Jess Glass

Not tremendously kid friendly, but they do have scavenger hunt sheets for the kids to use as they go through the tour, so that helped get my four through without incident. Lovely home. They've done so much research and historic preservation here. I learned some interesting facts about the time period and the culture of Savannah. If you're not into history, though, skip this one.

Paul Couto

Very nice tour. Explaining the parallel lives of the rich and the enslaved

Anne Marcille

Great tour guide very informative

Enrique T.

Historically accurate tour that doesn't sugarcoat history. Excellent historical interpreters dedicated to representing the stories of the enslaved.

Maestro Maestro

Interesting - as an illustration of the high Life in the 18th century Savannah.

Aimee Thomas

Such and awesome history. First house with plumbling here in Savannah. House was way ahead do the time.

Bruce Matthias

An elegant and well restored home with insightful guides.

Kara Kelly

Very pretty from the outside! We had our dog with us so we didn't pay to go in though. I think it was $20 each.

Mary Pleasant

Great tour and the admission price is a bargain as it includes the two other Telfair at museums

Nicholas Kvalheim

The Owens-Thomas House was a cool glimpse into the history of Savannah Georgia. I would highly recommend getting the guided tour. Our tour guide had a lot of good information to share, and they made the tour engaging and enjoyable. Be sure to get to the house a little early to reserve your spot on one of the future tours that occur throughout the day.

Lisa Barber

Love history and it's still to this day beautiful workmanship

Alison Lopez

Very beautiful, well restored house. A thorough tour of what life was like in that era. Also, for a change, the opposing view of what it was like to live as a slave. Very informed guide.

Carl Taylor

Really interesting slice of history. The tour did a good job of telling the whole story of the people who lived here, speaking very openly and often about the enslaved people and their lives instead of implying it or leaving it unmentioned. Highly recommend this tour.

Brandon Seigler

Visiting one of the most historic homes in all of Savannah is always a day well spent. When you visit you must take the guided tour. The groups have about 15 people in them, so it's a manageable group. The visitor center is the size of a bedroom, so it will only kill about 5-10 minutes. The interior of the home is well kept, and there are some great pieces in there. My favorite was the map that was so old Hilton Head Island was called French's Island. Our tour guide was a very nice young man who had not been on the job very long, but he tried his best to answer every question. If you're looking for something to kill time until you get to your time just walk over to Oglethorpe Park and enjoy the view.

Michael Condon

Beautifully preserved historic home. Wonderful guided tour. A must see.

Duane Swaving

This tour was good, it was about the life of a slave. I was disappointed that they did not do the tour in the house basement where much time would have been spent. But we still learned a lot and enjoyed the tour.

Louis Clausi

Always dynamic visuals created by some of the most eclectic soulsand visionaries of Savannah. The first Friday events are spectacular and all of the other perimeter events really carry the essence of what the neighborhood once was. Stop in and check out the artist studios.

Luann -

Rich experience in many ways - historical, spiritual, emotional, informational. If you only do one house tour in Savannah, let it be this one!

Mark Woodley

A house infused with architectural elements from the English Regency period. The bridge at the top of the double staircase, that I replicated in one of my own homes, and detailed elements, acanthus supports on the side terrace and parterre gardens. Note the Bath stone exterior. Be sure to visit the slave quarters for the significance of the painted ceilings. Great tour guides.

Ryan Pope

Docent was very knowledgeable and helpful. Beautiful property and fun for our kids

Q. Shanté Martin

The history was very interesting.

juicy mae

Our tour guide was name Haley & her tour was very informative. She wanted to make sure we got our money worth (her words) lol. The house is very beautiful it feels like you're traveling thru time.

D Stoneback

Very informative tour. Our guide monica was very helpful and knowledgeable! If you're looking for an inside look and preservation at what the homes of elites were like in old savannah, I recommend this!

James Pollio

First of all you don't see any slaves quarters at all. And I'm confused as to why they can save a big mansion , all the furniture, and dam water system that no one else had at the time and not a small room where are ancestors lived? This tour is about a rich slave owner who mingled with future presidents and a ex war hero who was very popular and against slavery back then and Savannah wanted to impress him with a lavish stay in the city, Although Lacey the guide was very knowledgable about the house and owners history she deserves 4 stars . Don't waste your money thinking your going to see any real slave quarters! Very disappointed .

Kristin Langford

Fantastic tour provided by a very knowledgeable guide.

Taryn Marriott

Cool Historical Landmark! Can walk around the grounds for free... however the only way to get inside the house is by paying for the tour. From what I was told: they run every 20 minutes and can last up to an hour.

Terry C.

This city of Savannah has so much history. I ride my motorcycle here from central Florida at least 3 times a year just can't get enough of the city

Dave Gowins

Great tour. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and kept it fun. The curved door is amazing work.

Alicia Jade

This museum was definitely one for the books. It was nice seeing the actual artifacts as well as original pieces of furniture and decor from the first house owners. I learned a lot and I will definitely encourage everyone to be open minded while touring the property because the stories in there are definitely touching. It was an amazing tour!

Vicki Hays

The tour guide was super informative about the history of this home and residents.. the grounds are well preserved.. lovely flower garden.

Andrea Petaccio

Very limited on what you could actually see. To clarify more than 1/2 the 2nd floor including upstairs balcony. None of the 3rd floor and a small window to view a tiny piece of the sistern that I was most interested in seeing. There was a lot of "may or may not have been" with regards to rooms, setup, etc. Very little original detail and almost no pictures of actual family that lived there. As for slave quarters just a lot of bare walls with the exception of the upstairs that had another "may have been." I know history is difficult and a lot of guess work but I'm sorry I think I would focus more on how advanced the house was with running water and the bridge and more things that you can be more sure of. Not what I was expecting.

Eric Hutchings

Local wildllfe is easy to spot, quite quick for a turtle.

Lisa-Marie Brown

A fantastic historical place to go in Savannah. Learn about a United States Congressman that had enslaved people working for him. It is a walking tour of the house that does inclue both the slave quarters and private quarters of the Congressman.

Russell Glitman

Beautiful house considered to have the height of modern conveniences at the time it was built. Slave quarters are a chilling reminder of our country's past that explain the current and ongoing effect of our nation's original sin.

Jody Leigh

This has got to be my all time favorite historic house in Downtown Savannah. It is just so beautiful! I love the inside of the house, I love the outside of the house and the garden area if beautiful in the summer time. Now I'm not sure if it's true of now, but it's been said that you get to see move of this house that any other house for tour in Savannah.

Trina Shugart

The tour was awesome. Very informative. Jackie was a great tour guide. I would definitely go again. #mustsee #learn

Renee Moats

The tour guide did a wonderful job explaining the homes history... And go figure, this house had operable plumbing before the White House in DC. This is a must see in Savannah.

Richard Chambers

It's lovely old home (1830s) lovingly restored with guided tours that include information about the lives of the slaves who kept the household running as well as the lives of the owners. Tour guide was knowledgeable about the house and history and answered questions. Furnishings were circa 1830 but not all original to house. Tours are on a schedule so you may need to wait. Tour group size is kept small so there may be a wait if busy. One of the three sites on the Telfair ticlet purchase. Easy walking distance from Telfair and Jepson. Parking garage in easy walking distance as well as restaurants on Broughton Street. We made a day of the three sites and lunch at the Flying Monk Noodle Shop on Broughton St. Parked at 11am in garage, walked to Telfair to purchase tickets and walk through it then walk to Flying Monk on Broughton around 1:15 pm then to Owens-Thomas House (arrived at 2:30 pm and queued for 3pm tour, 1 hour) then to Jepson for a quick walk through before they closed at 5pm.

Jim Dixon

Savannah Georgia is filled with early American history and the Owens-Thomas house is worth the visit. The tour guide was very knowledgeable of the house, the families that lived there and the historical time frame. God Bless America

Michele Vansickle

Very lovely garden. Stopped there on a ghost tour

Tins Pierce

Nice tour. Very informative.

Jason Carranza

Better if the tour had less social justice lecturing.

Bari Trost

Absolutely wonderful tour! Rarely do you get to see how owners and slaves both lived. Tour takes about an hour. Make sure to leave enough time to visit the basement of the home, we had lunch reservations and wished we'd had another 30 min to read and explore. There are 2 other venues that are available with this ticket. Telfair Academy & Jepson Center. 3 museums/art galleries for only $20.00.

Greg Ketcham

A fantastic tour that doesn't shy away from incorporating the stories of enslaved people as part of our history.

Shoshana Rubinstein

Lovely staff, good tour

Joan Dewey

Our tour leader, Abby, was awesome. Well worth the time. She explained a lot of things and did a great job answering questions. The blue ceiling? Go on tour and learn why it is blue.

Norma Sims

Enjoyed the tour and recommend this tour...

Debra Waters

Gives you a different perspective, and a history lesson. Beautiful grounds...

burn after reading

Beautiful place full of history. They keep claiming the gentleman of the house was very educated yet he was a creator of the Indian removal act and owned 100s of slaves.

Ryan Miller

Very educational. Tour guide was very knowledgeable.

Amber D

Terrible staff! It looks like a beautiful place but never was allowed to take a tour. I bought tickets three times for me and my children and was turned away each time 2 hours before closing. Don’t even bother visiting or wasting your money. They wouldn’t even refund my money!!!

Robbie Korte

Amazing historic perspective. Great docent (Haley)

Michael Zaneski

Nice historic site. Well preserved

Nekole Lozano

Wonderful tour guide who explained the history of the family and the history of the enslaved people who worked there. Gives a much more in depth and complicated look at the lives of those who lived there compared to other plantations. Highly recommend.

Kristi Holmes

Wonderful tour guide who explained the history of the family and the history of the enslaved people who worked there. Gives a much more in depth and complicated look at the lives of those who lived there compared to other plantations. Highly recommend.

John Daugherty

Really nicely preserved and decent very informative. One of the best house tours I've been on. Highly suggest going there in savanna

James Root

House was beautiful but the older lady who gave tour however was not, I understand many of the workers volunteer but If you don’t like answering questions then don’t do the community service. The whole group today at 11:45 kept commenting on how rude she was... she would ask if anyone had any questions and as soon as you asked she’d get snappy, I couldn’t take it anymore and asked her if we indeed were allowed to ask questions or if it bothered her. She said “If you would Wait or listen you’ll eventually get your answer!” I couldn’t take it anymore we left the group early. I looked up the rest of the history on my own.

Werner Sieber

We had a very good visit with an excellent guide.

Terry Jopko

Thoroughly enjoyed the tour. Our guide was great. It puts history into perspective better than any other media.

Perry Lamb

Place is really interesting and there is a lot to see and learn about. However, our guide had a definite agenda and made it clear at every opportunity. Made us very uncomfortable. Would not go back and wouldn't recommend it to anyone else despite how interesting the place could be.

Patricia Gregory

The old rustic atmosphere was breathtaking. The colors and the cobblestone streets were beautiful. Rousakis Riverfront Plaza, Forsyth Park, and the Willow trees made the visit enjoyable. Loved the museum tour as well.

Shelly Thompson

Wonderful your with a very knowledgeable guide. Not every house has a bridge!

Achike Molokwu

Alot of history can be gotten from this one house.. not only how they lived socially, but how they got simple things done like plumbing.

Soha

This is definitely a super cool experience. I loved the history behind it. There's a lot to see, the home is absolutely stunning. I hate that it had a slave history, sad times. But history is important so we don't repeat our stupidity. It was one of my favorite places.

Armando Panichelli

You get to know a minnimum about how slaves lived, (or try to) . At least that was what I felt when visiting the cellar and service area of the house.

S M

The newly exposed enslaved work quarters and referring to slaves as enslaved emphasizes their history.

Cara Murdock

Excellent tour filled with thought provoking information. Great research opportunities, a very detailed and educational look into the past. Also bought the tour for 21.50 and access to the Jepson Center and Telfair Academy.

Ernestine Appleton

Loved it the history, details, architectural design and the furnishings. I could almost see the people of both cultures at work. There were many questions asked and answered!

Colleen Beaudoin

We didn't take the tour because it was late in the day when we arrived. It's $20 per person.

Alice Searle

First we had a terrific guide, Lacy, who knew her history backwards & forwards. Incredible look into our past with amazing architecture ideas & first plumbing. How the house changed, yet remained intact. Contrast of the wealthy and everything/everyone they owned .... including their political influence! The complete/total tour of Savannah!

Tim Othy

Great historic tour.

Isabel Green

This home is amazing. Our tour guide was filled with history about the family and the house. She gave information regarding furniture pieces, the architecture and the running water. The architecture was absolutely amazing. If you've toured any other homes in Savannah, this one is a must see. It is so different from any other. It had running water and understanding how the slaves would have ran the kitchen/garden and served the family is still unbelievable. The tour guide gave us a lot of history of the public records about the family and how they refused to give up the slaves as property because they were worth money. It's so frustrating that people would not lose collateral over human life. This is a must see for anyone who wants to learn the darker history about slavery in Savannah.

Marie K

Lovely Regency house to explore. But what sticks with you after leaving is the story of the slaves, on whose backs this house and much of this hauntingly beautiful city is built. They don't gloss over history's ugly truths. The tour is well worth it for its honest description of life among the slaves and their owners. It's not just the guided tour but the exhibits that will stay with you. Remarkable museum for everyone.

Jessica Kelley

Cool spot. I thought the $20 admission was a bit pricey, though.

Bette Belle

Not to be missed when in Savannah! The tour was amazing! The history is truly remarkable and eye opening!

Lorie Morris

Wonderful tour guide who explained the history of the family and the history of the enslaved people who worked there. Gives a much more in depth and complicated look at the lives of those who lived there compared to other plantations. Highly recommend.

Cheryl Foster

We visited the Owens-Thomas House while in Savannah. It is so well maintained you feel as though you stepped through a time warp. The gardens were all in bloom and there are many plaques explaining what you are viewing. You are allowed to view the slave quarters on your own time and speed. There are lots of plaques outlining what you are looking at in each room. I found the slave quarters very interesting. The guided tour was very informative. I do wish we could have spent a little more time in some of the rooms. Our group was large and they do not allow you to stop and really look at the items in the various areas of the house. Our guide was very informative. She would ask if you had any questions but if you asked a question she appeared to become annoyed. Her standard answer was, "We will get to that later". All in all we enjoyed visiting the three areas. I would recommend it to someone that is interested in history.

Pam Rich

Beautiful house and really good informative tour.

Kourtney Nunnery

Stunning and Huge house! I loved the basement of the house along with the beautiful furniture inside.

Vaughn Ericson

Among the historic houses we toured in Savannah, this was the most interesting. Architecturally, this house has a great story, from its cisterns and running water to the bridge on the second floor. However, the guides are too focused on the slavery aspect of the house and slaves who lived in it. The beauty and interesting features of the home get lost in the constant talk of slavery. It seems the guides want us to leave the house feeling more badly about life in it all those years ago than how neat the house really is. Oh, and dont expect Southern hospitality from the lady in the ticket window. Despite all of what we have written of our experience, the house and carriage house/slave quarters are worth seeing.

Michael Jackson

A great tour! Learned some history I never knew. Our guide was excellent!!

Mike Hanson

On its own, this place is probably a four, but Telfair cohesively is a five. The grounds are well-kept, with very good displays and thorough information, especially for such a small production. The tour guides are informative (though some have a bit of attitude), and each guide will tell you something a little different about the house and grounds. Definitely worth taking the time to see the house, museum, and galleries.

Erin West

I appreciated the unique perspective provided on this house tour, which gave insights from both the home owner and those who were enslaved on the property. Our guide kept switching perspectives back and forth during the tour, which made me thoughtfully recognize that the beautiful furnishings and splendor all came at the price of someone else's toil. We had a knowledgeable guide who provided some great insights. The $20 combo ticket was well worth the price. Our ticket got us into the house along with future visits (during the same 7 days) to the Telfair Academy and the Jepson Art Center.

Agent Smith

A fantastic historic experience. The amount of history in this property is unreal. From President Polk visiting for dinner, to the first indoor plumbing system, this tour has something for everyone! The look back at what it was like for slaves is unreal! Letters from the period are very revealing and unbelievably interesting. Take the time to visit! Tours run every 15 min.

Amanda Pope

The tour guide was especially good and she answered questions with real expertise. She was considerate of our children and allowed them to ask questions as well! The upkeep and renovations are outstanding and I would say that if you want to visit Savannah and you only have time for 1 home visit, this is the one you should choose.

Alexis Paine

The tour guide provided a lot of great details. He was obviously knowledgeable about the history of the house and Savannah. The house was also pretty cool. Definitely exceeded expectations.

Duane Nicolette

Very excellent tour and the pass give you access to three of the houses with in Savannah. For $20 and 3 hours worth of Tours it is a definite investment and a good one

Kevin Garcia

The house was beautiful but the English lady was very opinionated. Instead of simply giving us a nice educational tour with facts, it felt like she was using the tour to push her agenda.

Peter Moulson

It's all about white privilege and opulence. Apparently...the slaves were treated really well! Not! Don't go if you're interested in the Slave Quarters. One little room. Scam.

ritz ritwika

I absolutely loved the tour - I was enamoured with Savannah ever since I got here and I felt that it was really important to be aware of the dark parts of history that has enabled the existence of this city that I find entirely magical. The tour was informative, our guide, Renee was knowledgeable and answered all our questions, and I loved that they used language such as enslaved people as opposed to slaves so that people were not defined by the situations forced on them. Absolutely a must-visit if you are into history. Also, with a twenty dollar ticket, you get access to three different historical sites.

clara gasaway

I was not going to review this tour because it is a negative review and from other negative reviews all that is done is the people that run it say well this is the history. However it is their interpretation of history and a judgment of people and a time that they really do not know anything about. The tour we took in January was done by Steven B. The tour starts off in the slave quarters. Learning about why the ceiling was blue was interesting. I could also understand the stories of slaves being told while you were there. I also understand the stories of slaves or “The enslaved” as the tour guide kept saying, being mention in the home at the appropriate place i.e. the butler’s pantry, on how that indoor slaves lived. What I cannot fathom is how one could spend an hour of their lives touring a home and learn nothing of the family that lived there? The entire tour is nothing but a guilt trip on “Whites”, and the history is not correct. I know that the museum is trying to be politically correct, but they are not historically correct. If you want to talk about “the enslaved” then maybe you should also talk about the indentured servants that settle the land in Georgia. They also were worked to the bone and not paid and had nothing to do with race or politics. At one point the tour guide talked about an abolitionist who spoke from the porch out to the people on the street. Fast forward though talk of how many slaves were owned and other slave stories, you end up at the office where Steve B said that the owner of the house would have had discussions with said abolitionist. Steve then goes to say that because the man was a slave owner “we know where he stood politically”. That is an unfair statement. We do not know what the home owner’s political thoughts were. Thomas Jefferson had slaves and was anti-slavery. Also would someone that is so against freeing the slaves have an abolitionist not only stay but speak from his home? I somehow doubt that. This made me upset the most. If you want to learn about the family I would just go to the Telfair Academy Museums, you will learn more about the Owens-Thomas. Otherwise just pass this up and save your time, money, and stress. I am sure that Savannah has other lovely places to see. We just decided to leave and go to Charleston were we could enjoy the rest of our vacation.

Monique Lambert

We almost didn’t do this house. So glad we did. Our tour guild was amazing. He was very knowledgeable about the house and the questions we asked. So much history to hear about on this tour. Definitely check it out if in the area.

Devon Dayhuff

Tour was very informative, tour guide did a great job

Jens H

Beautiful house with an interesting story. We had a great guide who guided us through the house and garden. Highly recommend to take the guided tour!

Rosalinda Wilson

Awesome place to go and tour. Love the old historic furniture pieces of the time. The tour guide was very knowledgeable.

Lisa Holz

Wonderful house tour! Our guide was very engaging.

maria tangredi

Our guide, Lacey Wilson, was knowledgeable, informative, and efficient. There were many details about the home and its former I habitants, but she deftly helped everyone make more global connections to social justice and inequality. Thanks, Lacey!

Valerie Markham

Though we enjoyed the tour it became apparent very early in the tour that our guide Lacey was going to offer the tour with a very angry tone. Everyone on the tour knew the history of slavery (after all it is 2019) however Lacey saw the need to be aggressive and completely negative with her entire delivery, start to finish-which I assume is the way the guides are trained. One poor lady asked about a bowl-her response was "What about it", another asked about the height of the bed which she clearly did not know the historical answer, however my husband and I did not feel comfortable answering the question because of Lacey's whole demeanor. Lacey just wanted to get back to ramming the enslaved people down our throats. At no point did she state a single positive thing, all negative. History also tells us that it was considered an honor to serve in the big house as either butler or nursery maid rather than out in the fields but all we heard was how the enslaved people were on call 24 hours a day, forced to wear clothes they did not chose, etc etc. You would have to deaf, blind and very dumb not to know how dreadful slavery was, thank god for Abe Lincoln-I certainly did not need to spend an hour with Lacey ramming it home-quite a pity. Now, I fully expect a terse rebuttal from the Manager of this establishment as each negative review gets, instead of "Thank you for your opinion"

An excellent tour guide and educational experience!

Michael Tankersley

We enjoyed the tour of this historic house. There was no good place to wait for the start of the tour which was 30 minutes. Once the tour started it was informative and the tour guide was friendly.

Caleb Humble

Lots of good history here

James Nelson

Our tour guide was very knowledgeable about this historical house, answering all questions along the way. The stories made this house what it is.

Bill Bogle Jr.

This is a must see place. Great work on the enslaved people. Moving. Must see the new exhibit in the basement on live in the 1800s as an enslaved person in the house in the City.

Jordan Barhorst

Great piece of history in Savannah. The tour guides left a little to be desired, but the actual house and items in the basement were worth the price of admission.

Jessica Baker

This place was incredible to see. The tour was very informational, but was never long and tedious. I appreciate the knowledge of our guide!

Wish we would have had a better tour guide person. Couldn't understand her. Loved the house though.

Jane Blackmore

It was a great historical place to visit.

Micah Willard

Really interesting history here. The fact that they had so much original furniture was mind-blowing! Also, their tour guides are great and very knowledgeable!

James Andrew

It has the only example of original haint from the time. The tour was good too. It's nice if you do some sort of ghost tour as well to add a little mystery. The only reason I really gave it five stars is because it is part of a 3 place admission price. The other stuff is worth it too.

Thomas N .Gannon

Great guide interesting history very informative

Alexis Russell

Very informative and a great way to see some history. Good price for the tour

Matthew Taylor

A wealth of knowledge and history on this tour. Very educational.

Lynne Roberts

Why don't we just shut down the enslaved people's quarters and just talk about how rich and amazing the enslavers were, and how beautiful their home is, then, everyone will feel really great!!!
