It was cool getting see the history of the Plantation and how people used to interact back then. We could still learn from that today!
Beautiful grounds, so glad we found this gem!
I have visited Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation twice, and have thoroughly enjoyed it both times. The house tour is led by a knowledgeable docent and you get to walk through and see everything, upstairs and down. The house is still decorated with the actual furniture and belongings that were left behind when the last resident of the family passed away in the 70s. There are several outbuildings with various machines and even the owners old car that's still kept on site. The extensive grounds are beautiful and if you enjoy taking pictures, there is a lot to explore and many subjects to capture. In the gift shop there is a small museum and a mini theater where you can watch a short film about the plantation's history before you get started. I recommend it, as it will tell you more about you'll see as you walk around.
Excellent!
Interesting movie, museum and grounds. The grounds are beautiful and the house with the original contents were amazing.
Very interesting to visit and see what life was like in yesteryear. Interesting to imagine what rice plantation life was like back in the day.
My fiance has been wanting to go on the ghost tour for over 2 years. However, as a truck driver we never got a chance until tonight. I will say that the Manager, his wife and some of the volunteers were wonderful and truly seem to enjoy their jobs. However, there was an overweight, older white male who was rude and belligerent to my fiance more than once. He accused my fiance of "not paying attention to the presentation that he paid $15 for". He also accused both of us of "messing with the water supply" while we were exploring the grounds which we had been told we could do after the presentation. He then yelled at us to leave and go home. If these are the volunteers they are going to continue to use, I wouldn't waste my money. It's a shame because this could have been an enjoyable time and we had intended to return.
So much to see and learn about the history of plantation life
What a fascinating history of Georgia
This very historic plantation is being well preserved and presented. Well worth visiting if only to walk through the live oaks and envision the past.
Very nice, kept just like they received it. Would go back
Beautiful plantation $8 to get in includes a small gift shop and museum with a video and a guided tour of the house.
A piece of history. Great tour of the home. Guide gave great talk on the house and property of life in the olden days.
Absolutely beautiful! If you don't mind walking, the actual house is really worth seeing.
Lovely grounds and plantation home.
Interesting place with lots of history.
Beautiful place to visit and take photos.
My family and I loved the tour and the host from Massachusetts was phenomenal!!
Beautiful place
Excellent trip, the tour guide Andy was Extraordinary. I would definitely recommend it to everyone.
Awesome adventure. The trees are amazing. Staff was so nice and helpful
Definitely worth the admission. The museum is informative - including a video - about the lesser known cash crop "King Rice", responsible for so much plantation-era prosperity. No punches are pulled as the plight of slaves doing this torturous labor is described in detail. The grounds are characterized by the most impressive collection of massive, old (even ancient) live oaks I've seen anywhere, alongside several State of Georgia champion trees of other species. The antebellum complex on premises is well kept with all original/heirloom furniture, and the guide is entertaining and knowledgeable.
Love visiting here. I recently went to the Christmas special they do a couple nights during December, amazing!
Great Fun! Great displays, and fun gift spot for the kiddos!
Great day trip, lots walking!
Good tour this AM. Very informative. 8 dollars admission. Beautiful views from house! What a gem!
Worth stopping for a break. A beautiful setting to stretch your legs.
Went for Christmas night. Was suppose to have carolers, Santa, I assumed Christmas lighting, etc. Highly promoted. There were no carolers. There were hardly any lights. No nativity. Aside from Santa and some cookies and wassil, you could not tell it was a holiday event. In addition the golf cart never showed up to take people back to the entry as was promised. There were no Christmas lights anywhere or Christmas displays. Candles on the ground to help with the path back to the entry. If it is promoted as a Christmas event, they should make it that.
Incredible luogo da visitare assolutamente
Interesting history from the rice industry in the early days of America
Excellent!
A wonderful place to visit and learn about coastal Georgia's history. The volunteer in the gift shop was very pleasant and the guide at the house was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about the family history and the times they lived. I encourage anyone nearby who is in any way interested in the period of history to visit. You'll learn a lot about a time that has disappeared.
Best one not widely knows and there are bugs but its good walking around and seeing this awsome place history
Very nice rice plantation. Lots of interesting information.
E-Z Parking, nice Welcome Center with informative staff and artifacts. Fascinating history and the house itself and absolutely stunning grounds. Great for historical tour would also be a great venue for a function.
Beautiful plantation and history The tour guide was so knowledgeable would love to visit again
If you just want a beautiful place to look around for a few hours there is no better place. If you want to really experience it you have to check out their museum and informative movie. From there its a short walk down a shaded path through a series of their beautiful Live Oaks. Once you get to the end of the path you can see the house to the left, and several old out buildings in front of you. Near the house there are several trees that rang from 50-800+ years old (or so they say). The tour guides start every hour on the hour and are all great people for the job.
To know this place is still standing after the Civil War is awesome! So much history preserved! Loved touring the house seeing the furniture all still in place, and walking the grounds. The view breathtaking!
Just happened to be Georgia's Free Museum weekend, great tour.
There Christmas special is great!
History is part of who we are. We need sites and places like this to remind us of our ancestors mistakes so that we and the new generations to come don't make it too. If the south offends you then stay out of it!!! You're no better than Hitler if you run around trying to erase our past!!
When my family went here, we had a wonderful time. The people were real nice and very knowledgeable about the time period. It was almost as if time stands still in the Howfyl-Broadfield plantation house. Simply amazing
If you want to know what life was like in the south around the turn of the century or before, this is a great place to get a glimpse into the past.
Very informative for the kids and myself! Scenery was beautiful
Interesting place to visit
Had a wonderful time touring this plantation! Lots of history, people dressed in period clothing, lots of fun!
Wonderful historic location. We went for the haunted night tour and we were not disappointed! They don't do any sort of gimmicks where they jump out at you or tell silly stories they retell real events that happened and real sightings of ghosts that have happened on the plantation. You definitely learn a lot from the tour. I definitely felt really creepy feelings walking around outside at night and would recommend sticking with the group if you are easily spooked or have a sensitive sixth sense
We had friends in from Ohio last week. We were going to let them do the tour by themselves since we have been five times before. But when we heard Tina was giving the tour (someone different), we decided to go. So HAPPY we did!!! She was so informative and we saw rooms of the plantation we have not seen before. Please keep Tina!
Love the history!
Breathtaking look into history! This plantation has a well kept grounds and buildings. Just really rich in history! Throughly enjoyed visiting here.
The grounds are gorgeous. Love oaks every where. Large magnolias are also on property. The guided house tour leaves little to desire. It’s all about Ophelia and how she lived in the 60’s till her death. Maybe it was our tour guide, a semi retired history teacher (the irony is not lost..) who injects her opinions more often than facts about the property and going on’s of the day to day of the actual plantation. Unfortunately you can’t go in the home without doing the tour....
Relaxing and Addmorable Historical Site
This is the only historic building with the original furniture. The house and grounds are well maintained. The tour guides have several good stories to tell about the family members that lived in the house over several decades.
Loved it
Where else can you can see a 800 year old tree.
Great learning experience for parents, kids 9 & up & grandma too! Enjoyed the Spanish Moss, museum, & house tour. Recommended
Amazing the preservation and history here.
Really cool place.
Very beautiful.
Just love the way the trees look here with their beauty and the Spanish moss hanging down. The film in The Visitor Center is nice Just wish we'd been here in cooler weather.
Enjoyed the tour of house
Beautiful grounds, well-manicured and well-maintained. The numerous oak trees with hanging Spanish moss are great and create that picture-perfect image of the Georgia coast. The only problem we ran into was the swarming horse flies. The park has traps set up all over but they're losing the battle, unfortunately. The museum and gift shop had a great deal of information and interesting finds. We have the Georgia State Parks annual history sites pass so our admission was included. The house and outbuildings were neat and the ranger who conducted the tour was informative.
Beautiful oaks, massive trees
Interesting civil war reenactment
Loved it
Beautiful grounds, interesting and informative tour. Bring bug repellent!
Gave a fantastic insight into old Florida. Great tourguide.
What an absolute Gem, close to the highway but secluded. The history that is represented here is amazing, The grounds and visitors center are wonderful.
Interesting historic location. There is a tour of the home (not the original plantation home). The guide is knowledgeable. The home was set up to allow tou to actually view it in the whole. Compared to some homes in savannah, this one allowed more to be seen.
This was well worth my visit. Everything was so well preserved, and i learned some history. Thank you.
Nice stop to stretch our legs
On Anchor. Beautiful place.
Very interesting. Nice look into a bygone era. Lots of walking.
great history lesson
Great property and experience. Tour was very nice and informative. A must do when in the area.
Alot of history here. Worth the stop.
Loved the history behind this house. Great place to take the family when teaching them about Civil War and post Civil War history.
I have visited here 4 times. Each time on the way to or from vacation in Florida. It is a very interesting place to visit, and the massive old Southern Oaks with Spanish moss are a sight to see. I always imagine coming in the front drive as a horse and buggy 200 years ago.
They have one slave cabin left so they decided to make half of it the restrooms. That's how much they thought of us. Not one item left of slaves to put on display. All you see is one picture of one man who was the servant of the house. This plantation house 325 slaves and I'm just shocked it's not one thing on display besides the slave cabin turned into half restroom. Shaking my head that's the good ole' south for you.
Very Informative
Loved it
I took my grandkids here for the Easter egg hunt this year and I think it is truly wrong for them to charge $8 per adult for the Easter egg hunt, when this is for the kids only. The whole 1 hour this egg hunt was being done, the staff kept saying "this is for kids only" ok then tell me why i just spent $18 total for this Easter egg hunt!
Very nice place that has a lot of educational programs that you can take your children to on a family outing day. They have reenactments, refreshments, a gift shop and tours.
The people leading the tour we're great. The people in the house giving even more information on the house were good as well.... HOWEVER.. there were two people in back of the tour that kept pushing me like I was cattle.. . I was told one thing by the tour guides wife and the fat guy in back was telling me I couldn't, ( example - sitting on a tree branch ) .. after the tour. We were told we could stroll around on our own and look the place over ,( as far as I heard , no time limit was set ) being a history buff that's exactly what My fiance and I did.. . After exploring the dairy barn ,we went to see one one the huge oaks.. at which time the fat guy ( wish I had caught his name so I wouldn't have to use that description ) .. came out of the dark and asked in an accusation kinda way what we were doing with the water system.. what water system ? All we saw was a huge tank on the way to the huge oak. Then we were informed that we had to go and leave.. Can't help it that as history buffs we stayed longer than the others. But his rudeness the entire tour was seriously uncalled for ... I'm guessing he has a thing against long haired guys who are also 10 year Army veterans... Not to mention My fiance works for the Glynn county sheriff's Dept.. somebody needs to either put a leash on him and the woman with him or just remove them from the tour.. their attitudes sucked and at no time were they of any help.. Other than for those two.. it was great
Beautiful historical rice plantation and dairy farm, that remained I one family for five generations... Gorgeous coastal property... another must see...
Enjoyed the plantation today. The staff was very knowledgeable. Trail not available yet since damage from hurricane Matthew.
Nice place to visit, beautiful oaks and grounds
Attended the Easter Egg Hunt and the kids had a great time!
Lovingly preserved historical plantation with gorgeous grounds. Very educational.
Had amazing time and learned lots of history. Thanks you!
Very nice place. People are very friendly. They did and outstanding job of reenacting the time frame of the Civil war
Great place to visit.
Nicely kept but not much time to spend. Price to be a little much but park was nice.
Nice step into the past
Love this place at Christmas
Beautiful property!
Great place. Fabulous live oak trees. Wonderful cars at their car show.
Charming, beautiful, words cant describe, must see.
Great place. Beautiful huge Oak trees. Nice walk to the historic home. Knowledgeable guide to tell us all about the place. Well worth the money.
Ranger Andy made my plantation tour visit amazing! His knowlege of the intimate details made slavery imaginable in a respectful way...Thank You for one of my best State Park experiences!
fascinating glimpse into history well presented and explained
We had a wonderful very knowledgeable guide. We were able to wonder at our own pace. Thank you.
Met a very pleasant and informative volunteer and her husband. The trees on the property are amazing. I'm glad I had the opportunity to go there.
VERY interesting and not a typical tour...more like a chat with someone with a lot of knowledge.
Asked them if it was possible to see the slave quarters. Was told there was no such thing - they were 'servants' quarters. Are they trying to rewrite history here? The description of the plantation on the website does not even mention slavery!! "While many factors made rice cultivation increasingly difficult in the years after the Civil War, the family continued to grow rice until 1913." Many factors - you mean like the abolition of slavery? So you had to actually work the land yourself, rather than brutalising a whole people stolen their land?
A short drive off I95, and well worth the stop. It may not be your typical idea of a grand plantation. However, all the furnishings are standing exactly where they always stood. This is a time capsule of a bygone days, when rice was the top crop in the south.
Very historical
Great history
The Hofwyl-Broadfield plantation is an excellent value. The admission fee includes the museum which features an excellent film about the plantation's history, a guided tour of the plantation farm house, and self-guided tours of the dairy, servant quarters, and the rest of the outbuildings. The expansive areas of the ancient and majestic live oak trees was truly amazing.
Great place for a family day great piece of history
Live the plantation the tour guide Tina was extremely knowlegeable, lovely place and the gift shop and the movie were great
Beautiful old plantation. Ranger Andy who gave us a tour of the house was an amazing wealth of knowledge, not only on the property itself but every piece of furniture, how it was used, why it was there etc.. Learned a lot and the 800yr old Georgia Oak tree is a sight to see.
The house has beautiful antique furniture. There was just something off as if there was no joy but this furniture that furniture
Really pretty place
Excellent!
Place to go to learn about slavery, antebellum time and the history of growing rice. Gift shop has wonderful books on the region. Staff warm, informative and friendly. Wear comfortable, sturdy shoes.
Nice place to visit for a good walk & tour. Dogs are allowed but not in the main house for the tour. Bring plenty of water if you go in summer as it gets really hot.
