This Museum corresponds to the category of Rail museum.
We arrived at 1130am bought tickets and walked around only to realize they were about to shut down for lunch from noon to 1pm. So we didnt get to experience any of the tours because we didnt want to wait around for 1.5 hours. Wish staff would have given us this information when we arrived, waste of $22.
I have 4yr old twin boys who are obsessed with trains. They loved it. We purchased a 3 day pass and they insisted we use it.
I'm a huge history guy, went for my kids, who love trains and I ended up being the one who thought this place was must stop. Whoever had the idea of turning this place into a train museum is a genius; loved walking around the yards seeing the old boilers, building, and equipment, and blacksmith areas, and what the old buildings were used for.
Cute place to stop. The train ride was neat. The guide gave some good information.
Good place if you want to see old trains
This was a cool place to see where trains were under maintenanced and reupholstered. The tour guide was very knowledgeable of its history. And the walk through of the executive train cars was interesting as well.
Great historical interpreters made it interesting
My 3 year old son loved this place. Several trains you can actually walk into.
Sub an amazing place to learn from ... tourist guide was very acknowledged
It's mostly all outside so don't recommend on a hot day but the trains are cool and the buildings are really neat as well!
Really enjoyed this museum. It was alot of fun learning about the history of the town.
One of the best train museums I've been to in a very long time. They offer a combo package where you could see up to three different sites over multiple days. They have activities for kids, lots of trains for adults and older kids and of course a lot of history to help educate you on the train history of Savannah. Some train museums have one or two trains but this train museum has a lot of trains and is currently expanding to offer even. They are currently renovating buildings, restoring trains and building new activities to enjoy.
CLOSED at the moment due to film crew there for a few weeks. Best to ring to find out when re-opening. We had a hot walk there and wish we’d checked first!!
Very cool museum, the hands-on rail cart ride was awesome!
Love the old trains.
A wonderful old railway site with working roundhouse area. True, a lot of it has not been restored, but that also means it has not been cleaned up and made to look like something modern. Old trains and cars, some usable, some under restoration give a special look into the trains and what is needed to keep the stock rolling. I look forward to going back and being able to see the result of ongoing preservation and restoration efforts.
Well worth it. You will learn alot
Thought it would be bigger. And website didnt say that tours were only certain times and they are hours apart so withing 30 mins you can see everything and be done why wait 4 hours to go on a tour to go inside 2 train cars. We planned it weeks in advance for our anniversary and both were highly disappointed.
Cheap to get in and fun for kids and adults alike who love trains and history. They are currently working to add on different things which will be very nice.
We had the best time. So much to see and learn about. The staff was great.
Have thoroughly enjoyed every time I have been.
We took the 10am guided tour, and the tour guide was very knowledgeable, even though she had only been there about a year. The grounds are sprawling, and the buildings were open to allow you to get out of the sun. There were several interactive exhibits, that allowed you to see how a steam engine works, as well as some older pieces of machinery from the time (but not from that location). The children seemed to be just as interested as the adults, and the tour allowed us to see the inside of several older rail cars, the turntable in action, and to operate a hand cart on the tracks.
The trains at the round house, the demo and the interesting structure make this place unique.
Very interesting tells the history about the railroad in Ga.
Very reasonable price and a really cool set we took the tours and the train ride the whole area around their is full of history
A small gift shop had many gifts you could choose from for the family. There isn't a lot of space to cover, a fun time for an hour or 2.
If you are a railfan this is a must see museum. I was very impressed with the variety of displayed artifacts. Where else can you operate a handcar or watch a turn table in action. The rolling stock and engines in the round house were very interesting. Also enjoyed the displays in the paint shop. It was a little chilly on the day we visited so crowds were very minimal. I plan to return to see their expanded offerings in a year.
One of Savannah's most beautiful venues! This historical museum is filled with vintage trains, breezy walkways and charming architecture! The staff are incredibly knowledgeable and friendly! It is a perfect location for an elegant wedding or event! We highly recommend it!
Very cool time looking at these old train cars and locomotives, could have used a little more information plaques but we didn't try the guided tours which made have given us what we wanted, a couple of restored cars you could climb up and walk through which was amazing,
Polite staff, one of very few working turntables in the Eastern US! Afforable and much to see. Lots of room for kids to run and release energy.
A little lack luster. Cars are all locked without a guided tour, which run infrequently. Very little history provided. We were done in 45 min.
Wonderful for both adults and kids...lots of activities.
Very interesting! Big trains for all ages to look at and a kids museum. Train ride as well.
Good if you like trains and history
Interesting experience. Savannah is an amazing city.
An educational day trip and fun day of learning in an historical setting. Safe and secure playground for creative and imaginative play!!
Great tour guide! Funny and knowledgeable. He involves the visitors.
Very fun place to visit. There are old artifacts and films shown about life in Savannah years ago. Very clean restrooms and gift shop. Steam train rides also available.
The place is amazing
A great place to visit and also a very good cause. All the money goes t making it even better. These old trains are restored an preserved. A must see if your interested in trains and their history. It's a shame it's not visited more, just not easliy seen when visiting downtown. But worth the effort!
Great museum. If you have a child that loves Thomas the train, they have the turntable. It was awesome.
Theres not muxh to it. I definitely do not think it was worth it.
Very good history lesson. The railyard is amazing. You can tell it's unfinished as a museum, but the staff really care and they are working to make it great. There is a working engine and a short train ride is included in the admission price which makes it a bargain for what they charge. The ride is short, onto the turntable, and down a short section of track then it stops and you're a captive audience for a short history lesson about the railyard. The guide was extremely knowledgeable and excited about the history which made it really enjoyable. Then back onto the turntable and on a different section of track to the railcar repair area, and another interesting history lesson. Then back on the turntable again and back to the station. About a half hour total, highly recommended. The engines and buildings are also very interesting for adults and older children. The staff really makes this worth visiting and the price is very affordable.
So much to see here and the staff is very knowledgeable. We had an educational and enjoyable time.
My 13 yr old son had a wonderful time
So cute! Unfortunately the childrens museum was closed for weather but it looked so awesome!
Such a cool place of history! My boys loved it! Biggest agave plant I've ever seen in the garden area! A lot of cool buildings and trains!
I liked seeing the trains, so that was cool. We got tickets to go on the train ride expecting a train ride but all we did was go back and forth on the roundhouse portion. That was a little disappointing.
Cute place to stop. The train ride was neat. The guide gave some good information.
Beautiful place with rich history. Great to take the kids.
Its under construction so there isnt much to see. However having been to the PA Railroad Museum we were a bit disappointed by the limited trains to view. The smoke stack and black smith shop were nice but need a bit more work to bring them to life. Given the location it would be great to see once the construction is complete. One plus is that its right next to the childrens museum.
Very informative. Loved it. Looks like they have big plans for the future as they restore more trains
A beautiful historic place and weddings look amazing in there.
Awesome place, so many neat things to see! Be sure to catch a tour
Tons of trains. Great tours.
Great to see these wonderful trains brought back to life! They also have tours, model trains, and a place for the kids to play.
Right price for what there is to see. This is a great small, interesting museum. They have a cute little store which I really enjoyed looking through.
Georgia State Railroad Museum is one of the great places. Staff is very friendly and knowledgeable. Most of the objects have been preserved really well. Plenty of open and green spaces to roam around. There are multiple old trains and coaches to peek into the history. Highly recommend for kids, as it has great playing area. Also the tour guide explain engine mechanism so great. Fees is quite nominal with free parking. I saw group of school kids and I saw how much those kids enjoyed. I will definitely recommend it specially for kids or young family.
This gem is within walking distance of downtown. Well worth the visit and lots of exhibits to enjoy. We spent a few hours here and could have easily pent the day. They have done a wonderful job restoring old train cars and will happily show you and explain the process. A must stop for the train fan in the family.
Great way to explore southern food recepies. People around including the tourists are kind & pleasant.
What a great walk through RR history. The staff and volunteers do a great job showcasing some of America's rich history. Thank you for the time and talent.
A lot of work has gone into preserving the buildings and equipment. I enjoyed the tour.
For about $10-20 admission fee per person you get a cool tour on an old steam engine train and loads of Georgia railroad history. Well worth it just to learn about some history you probably never knew! Cool Sunday experience instead of the usual walking river st.
Be sure to ride the short train! Leaves at the top of the hour. Wish we could gone into the passenger cars.
Took the kids and they were able to ride a train, stand in a cab, tour passenger cars, and just enjoy each other’s company. It is a pretty cool place with history of the Southern Railroad. You can do everything in about 90 mins.
Such a great restoration. Beautiful location
Very interactive. Awesome visit!!
The trains are awesome to walk through and the tour guides are very knowledgeable about the history of each, but the museum lacks funding and the employees aren't afraid to admit it. Visit if you want to contribute to the preservation of local history.
My husband really likes trains so we enjoyed the museum. The train display in the roundhouse was great! Definitely not somewhere you would spend all day but still an interesting place to stop! We enjoyed the train ride as well.
Incredible museum for anyone interested in railways and industrial facilities of the past! If you catch the tours, our guide offered a wealth of information and was a lot of fun. The hand-powered rail cart was also pretty fun - makes a great phot op. I was amazed at the range of time periods covered with the buildings and rolling stock, as well as the roundhouse itself.
Fun little spot to visit. Recommend getting a 3 pass and pick 3 places to visit. I love old trains so it was fun to see. You can go inside some of them, take a train ride (it's very short but great for kids)
Great place ! Had my first experience traveling on a steam engine train. There was a huge turn table. Friendly and informative guide explained us about the history of this place. Anyone can spend good half a day here by visiting all the spots in the museum. Also nice place to take pictures ;)
Great historical monument to American rail
The museum is closed for renovations. Probably something that should be updated on their website. When you've been telling your 3 year old that he would be seeing trains for a week only to pull up and find a museum closed is a big disappointment.
Lots to see and prepare yourself to be amazed at the craftsmanship off yesteryear.
Really impressed with place and people. Steam train ride is a view into the past. Must see
Small, but interesting. They do a good job, restoring old rail equipment. I would definitely recommend, if you're in the area.
Took 3 different ages .. 1 1/2 - 3. - 8 years old. All Loved it .! !!!! Take snacks or packed lunch. There is a small play hill picnic area.. The outdoor children's museum should be renamed as a bi- level OUTDOOR entertainment center. The steps to get up n down I needed help with. After wards come to find out the elevator operator had a key for elevator but was not available when we were there. The restrooms were air conditioned n clean. The kids loved the maze, the climbing wall slides n could even mist off when hot. The top area had planter painting class, music making area and lots of fun. . Very clean grounds. The train area was nice to view with a stroller but could not get stroller up n down steps. The real working train engine keep everyone's attention. Don't forget to see the indoor model trains set up. Lots of good history. The area to buy tickets n gift shop was extremely small .
a great place for a ghost hunt
Nice place to walk around if you or the kids are interested in trains. Great place for photos. They let you get in a passenger car and push you a few hundred feet with a diesel engine. There is a building with toy train tables and games that's air condition. Free parking. Overall an enjoyable experience.
I have visited this museum on two occasions when in Savannah visiting family and both times enjoyed my visit. I have been to much bigger railway museums both in the U.S. and in the U.K. but found it to be very interesting for its size.
Knowledgeable staff. Excellent displays. Very family friendly.
We hosted our wedding reception here and it was absolutely amazing!!! We honestly had never considered a museum for our venue but once we saw the beautiful pictures from other events there we fell in love with it! Their coordinator Natalie did an amazing job helping us plan the event. She answered our many many questions and was always quick to respond. Everything went very smooth and made the night a success!! Can’t thank them enough!!!
Now if they could run excursions andele track across the streets and get out to the main line then you have something to talk about
Drove from Augusta for my sons 3rd bday to see the trains. No mention on any website that they were closed til the 5th. Poor communication to the public about closure.
This place is great for learning history. I took several pictures here. It's very beautiful.
Fun place to visit and learn. Take the kids and ride the train then take the tour of the executive cars it is worth the drive.
So much fun , need to see to believe
One of the best I have ever been to. Will be back.
Fun train ride.
Great place to visit! Super neat if your into trains! The staff is very nice and knowledgeable!
Been here twice closed both times.
Well worth a look whether a train enthusiast or not. Lots to see and explore the guided tours were excellent. They really appreciate each and every visitor.
Great experience with Ancient Steam Engines :-)
Great little stop. Took about 2 hours to go through with minimal people there. Cost about $34 for my family of 4. My son absolutely loved it.
Really neat railroad museum. The running steam locamotive is really neat, but some of the classic cars that can be walked through are amazing. I highly recommend it if you have any interest in railroads. It isn't crazy expensive, which is a good thing. Looked like some great stuff for kids too.
This was great! Doing the turntable ride was fun too! Highly recommend.
Great collections of Historical engines and cars. Round table and train models were also there.
Great turntable!
Awesome place
Everything is outside, so prepare for that, but all the exhibits are great. The train ride is more interesting than fun since it just goes up a short while in a line and comes back. The tours of the cars are really nice, though. Every year they add something new, it seems.
This guide looks like an Asian super movie star, Chow Yun-fat. He is good at what he does and he is funny.
Great stop! Bathrooms are nice. We got to visit the children’s museum for a few minutes as well- that was also a great addition to our trip!
Georgia State Railroad Museum is one of the coolest locations for weddings! The open air spaces, the old train roundhouse, the indoor hall: all provide amazing backdrops for photography and videography. Highly recommend.
There was barely anything to look at, cool train carts, that was about it. Paid 10 dollars and it wasn't worth it.
Learned a lot. Great history.
My son love trains. It was an amazing experience. The staff were super friendly and really made this trip one to remember ! This is a must see.
Very good and fast service
Excellent environment, great collection and very friendly people.
Had a blast here over Christmas vacation! Lots of outdoor space for kiddos to run, plus the excitement of a short train ride (type of engine varies by day, check website for details). Would not recommend visiting in bad weather. Also make sure you check out the combined ticket with the children's museum. The Distillery is a great (walkable) choice for your post-visit meal
Great Time and wonderful history
Great! Very educational!
Small but fun I enjoyed riding the train and seeing the model trains Cool !
My son is a trian lover. He loved it! This is a great place to visit, and you gets lots of information from the guided tours.
Lots of history here. Lots of restoration work underway.
Super fun for the whole family
Awesome rail museum for history or railroad buffs
Great staff and very interesting displays. Could easily spend a day here. There is a narrated train ride, a short film, model railroads, private rail car tours, a hand cart demonstration, a playground, a gift shop, and several locomotives on display. Located at the roundhouse next to the visitor's center. The only place for improvement is to give them enough support to increase staff so the tours run more frequently and they meet their goals of extending the rail lines. There is no food onsite except snacks in the gift shop.
I recommend taking the tour. It was very interesting.
Nice round house, lead employee was grouchy
Large place to visit and it was neat. Takes about 3 or 4 hours, depending on how interested you are.
Great museum; cheap, large, entertaining. Lots to see. Great for kids. Much of it is outside with no shade so wear sunblock!
Save your 10 bucks, went today because it was cold outside. Will take this off my list of things to do in Savannah
Worth the visit. Tours were interesting and informative. Being able to walk through the train yard buildings and roundhouse was a bonus since you can see not only the static display but the workings of a historic train yard operation. There are many people working to improve the experience for future visits and to preserve the important history. Take the "tours". They are informative and the only way you can go through 2 of the static display passenger cars. The short train ride tour is worth while too. Tours are included in the price of admission.
Great ppl there
Very interesting Museum. Ashley was our tour guide and had great knowledge. Fun for kids. Great for photographers!!
This is a great hisorical museum for young and old alike. You can see the various trains used throughout the years, go through the machine shops or take the children through the kids museum. There is a minimal charge; however, you can get a 3 day pass to the railroad museum, historical museum and the fort for around $15.
Super fun. Great price. The tour was great and the people we're nice. This is a great place. Totally recommend
My husband and I really enjoy learning the history of an area and looked forward to exploring the Georgia State Railroad Museum. There is a lot of potential for this museum but they have a long way to go. We timed our visit perfectly with a tour and ride on the train but it did not live up to our expectations. The train ride is very short and our tour group was so large that we did not get to learn as much as we hoped as we strolled through the train cars. The model trains were in sad shape and could really use some tender loving care. I look forward to returning in 5 years or so to see their progress.
Fantastic, fascinating #mustsee rail equipment and historic buildings on original site, but the best part is their terrific tour guides. Highly recommended.
Nice museum Some parts were not opened
Excellent opportunity to experience Georgia steam era railroading first hand. The tour guide was exceptionally knowledgeable in the overall operation and functionality of the entire site as well as individual buildings and work areas. There are also activities to keep younger children busy when they become uninterested in the historical presentations. Would definitely recommend for anyone interested in either local history or railroad history in general.
I have to say I was very disappointed in this museum. My family was in visiting and my grandson was so excited to see the trains. It seems that they were closed doing maintenance and remodeling on the majority of the place. Only one train was available to tour through , the rest were closed. The handcar was also locked when the sign said it was open. We paid full price to see what we hoped would be interesting day. I feel duped, in my opinion the cashier who sold us the tickets should have explained that there was some maintenance and remodeling going on before we purchased our tickets, instead she was trying to push a 3 attraction ticket instead. The museum should have explained the situation up front, and maybe should have offered discounted admission price temporarily, since we weren’t able to experience the full museum. It put a very bad taste in my mouth to shell out $80.00 for this experience and I hope they will be more forthcoming in the future. Total waste of money!
Great for kids of all ages. Very friendly staff
Enjoy the fun afternoon at the railroad museum attending an event called a taste of Savannah both were excellent
I loved the experience and history. It was oppressively hot outdoors and most of the attractions are outdoors. The experience out of this world if we were able to travel further on the train.
This historic venue is super enjoyable both for those who want an informational tour and families who want the kids to see trains up close. The Roundhouse and turntable are beautifully preserved and there are numerous cars and several engines to explore. On most weekends there are train rides which are a real bonus. There is so much to see and absorb that if we lived in the area an annual pass would be in order. If you love trains and/or history, definitely add this stop.
Good number of equipment's
Great place, very informative staff. We loved the fact that you could come back for 3 days as our first day was wet and soggy but still enough cover to enjoy the park.
Very entertaining for young and old. My grandkids loved it. Every train was Thomas. Haha
The museum's immerses you in a turn off the century railyard. Very well done and very well kept. And if museum personel are out and about they'll turn some if the old machines in and show them to you. SO COOL!
A nice little museum with some great history.
Great place glad I didnt miss it.
Amazing place. Kids had a blast. Tour guide was very knowledgeable.
This is a great place to visit in Savannah! They have done a great job restoring a full service train yard. The staff is very knowledgeable about the history of the place, and the steps they are taking in the restoration. They spent over 30 min with us demonstrating the different equipment and showing the changes that had been made over time. This was our second time there, and we still learned more. We will be back again as it is one of our favorite places.
Pretty cool place for a wedding reception.
Do you like trains? Do you have kids that like trains? This is a well maintained museum and former operating yard. Lots of steam engines as well as some diesel-electric. Tours are available as well as a ride behind one of the engines (and you get to experience the turn-table, and have some of the history of what you're seeing narrated to you). If you have children, combining with the child museum admission let's you entertain them if they tire of the more educational exhibits. Though, some of the engines you are allowed to board (read the signs), so there is plenty of entertainment for all.
What a wonderful place to visit. It was magical looking at all the old trains and seeing a way of life long lost. Great place for both adults and children...
Oh what a great place to look at the past an enjoy your past. Take time to visit the many train cars and engines. Chldrens Museum is right also. Free parking.
The staff here who did the tour and reenactments were so funny and knowledgeable.
Awesome Museum packed with history. A great price, once you are in the tours are free. The guide is very knowledgeable. Very hands on for kids too.
Great selection of decommissioned trains and well-preserved train yard. We took our two year old nephew who is obsessed with Thomas and trains, and the kid couldn't get enough of the place. We made a point to do the train ride, which was worth the wait.
It was ok. Entirely to hot. Couldn't go inside majority of trains. Cost 22 .00 just to view trains
If my husband wasn't a engineer for a freight company in Sav. I would be completely clueless on what was there other than they are trains! No information plaques etc. We went on free admission day, but while entering gift shop (were you would pay) I asked for map and was not told children's museum is NOT APART OF TRAIN MUSEUM! You pay to "upgrade entry fee". We walked in 107° heat to the other side of museum to find it all gated in with entry key code .... we were told we would have to go all the way back to pay admission. ..after being there for 45 mins already ...we declined. Model Train had ONE engine running, NOT a whole train just engine. There was a dozen just sitting there.....not moving... :( Children looked more like a playground then interactive Children's Museum from what I could see. Again all outdoors and in the sun;great from Nov to march
Great place to visit! Very interactive, the little train tour is neat. Many cool exhibits as well. I hope this place gets the money it needs to expand, there's still so much more that can come out of that place.
Very disappointing. The number of railcars open for viewing is minimal. The gift shop is cramped with no room to move around. I won’t be back nor can I recommend it to their folks.
Nice on premises train ride including ride on and off turntable ..interesting talk by volunteer car host about various engines they had etc.
Absolutely great place to visit.
