I suggest that anyone who plans on taking a trip to North Georgia make it a point to explore the mountains and be sure to include Funk Heritage Center on your itinerary. This museum keeps the accent on the unexpected. It includes an extensive Native American Art Gallery. Now this is an incredible display of early American tools. This place might be hard-to-find for those who are uninitiated, but please believe the Funk Heritage Center will surely be worth your time. The north Georgia mountains has plenty of history behind it. This area marks where the Cherokee Nation made their "last stand". This was there that the Nation formulated the plans to fight the state of Georgia. This led to two different landmark cases that both went to the Supreme Court. Under the direction of William Wirt, one-time Attorney-General and vice-presidential candidate, the Cherokee were declared an independent Nation. Unfortunately for them, Andrew Jackson sided with Georgia and passed the corrupt Treaty of New Echota, sealing the fate of the Cherokee and forcing them out. That is just a taste of some of the history that I learned while visiting this place. I strongly recommend this place to anyone interested in this part of history.

I highly recommend this gem in the weeds. This place is off the beaten trail but well worth the visit. Lots of Indian history and artifacts. They have an impressive hand tools collection that takes a while room to itself. They also have a nice display or modern art reflecting Indian life.

Informative and the building design enabled me to really picture the cultural aspect of local Native Americans. The tool collection is absolutely amazing and the short video has some breathtaking shots of the Appalachian Mountains. The museum attendant gave me a brief overview of the building, but she wasn't overbearing or obtrusive. I had a great experience.

Great place and very informative other than the fact that the guides kept calling the Cherokee, Creeks and other tribes- Indians not Native Americans
