This Museum is classified in the category of Historical place.
Wonder place to visit. Guide to the mounds was great, highly recommend...
Simply amazing! Being able to walk around and onto the mounds is really cool. It almost feels like you are exploring a lost city. The museum and gift shop are ok, but the park ranger Lee was nice. But naturally the mounds, the Etowah river and the trees are the best part. Definitely worth checking out!
This State of Georgia park is unique and beautiful. Adjacent to the clear waters of the Etowah River and home to a set of Native American mounds which are part of a group of mounds in the area. The museum on-site is clean, fun, and interesting to the young and old. The gift shop is horrible and filled with foreign made trinkets. Bartow County, GA is rich with Native American, African American, Mining, iron production, and civil war history. After visiting the mounds explore the other local parks.
Very educational. Also will get in a great walk learning about the Etowah life.
6 mounds remain (3 are very small). Insight on the sad history of these Indians. Very nice exhibits and video presentation. You are allowed to climb up on the mounds as well.
Great historical site. Provides a great informational film, museum, and details about the ancient Etowah Indian tribe. Mounds to climb, walking trail, and next to the Etowah river.
I give this a 3 star because they allow you to walk on the mounds and I dont feel this is respectful of the natives who lives there. They also had a lot of native artifacts that should be in the hands of natives.
Nice meusium and a great look into the history of the Etowah Indians. Highly recommend if your a history buff.
Chaperoned my daughter's class field trip, and we had a great time. It was terrific to see her learning about a part of her family's heritage.
One of the Great Contributions Indigenous People of North America have Succeeded in Erecting. We have a Wonderful Opportunity to Promote Cultural Awareness and Show Respect for the Founders of Modern Societal Structure.
Etowah Mounds was superb trip. The mounds were actually bigger than expected. The staff was friendly. There are plenty areas to rest and enjoy the scenery. Inside, its a museum or your choice of picking the mounds to see first, which was a breathtaking experience, in addition, the river is one most extraordinary things, it was beautiful and peaceful.
Awesome site. Be sure to climb up the mounds and see the fish weir!
This was an amazing experience, just to walk where our ancestors made their lives and thrived. Native American cultures do not get enough credit for how ingenious they really were. Gary was very friendly and knowledgeable. I thoroughly enjoyed talking with him and having him answer my questions. The river area is beautiful, which makes for an exquisitely pleasant walk through the trees. I was pleased to find that the park is well maintained, the museum was expertly laid out and easy to navigate, as well as clean facilities. Absolutely, I recommend this visit for everyone, but especially for history lovers!
A must see on list of places to go if you like history.
Awesome place to visit!
Archaeology and history in our own back yard. The river walk and climbing the mounds are fun for kids, but there's even more for a contemplative adult willing to spend an afternoon.
Not much to see here but it's peacefull and preserved
Love this place for an outing! It's a beautiful location and full of history. The kids loved it!
Rebecca was so kind and eager to give information along with literature that left me very informed. The grounds are beautiful and so well preserved. Beautifully amazing historical site right in the backyard of Bartow County!!!
So cool to see those mounds! The biggest one is just over 60ft high. The history is also interesting along with the artifacts they have on display.
As a history nerd, I rate this site as rad.
Really cool place with explanations of ancient native American life.
Only $6/ person is a great deal to learn about the native American culture of the area.
Significant cultural and historical attraction that may be worth going to see if you're interested in Native American stuff
Beautiful, inexpensive and educational
Very knowledgeable staff. Loved it.
Very cool historical site. Very fun walking around and imagining what it must have been like 500 years ago.
What a really cool place! Good family fun!
Fantastic museum and intact mounds
Very evocative spot with the river running along the boundary; almost deserted. Nice interpretive center. I was there conducting research for a novel, but very much worth the detour if you are in the vicinity.
Really cool place to visit
A very interesting historic site in northwest Georgia. The area is the site of a pre-Colombian Mississippian Indian settlement. The mounds themselves, or at least two of the three, were built beginning over 1000 years ago. They once served as elevated foundations for structures of note. The settlement covered the entire site. A model of what it may have looks like can be seen in the museum. Mounds A and B are original; mound C was fully excavated and what you see today is a reconstruction. On one side of the park you can see the pit from which all of the dirt for the mounds was excavated. At there far side there is also a very nice walk along the Etowah River where you still and relax by the river, a can see a fish-funneling dam that would have helped the original inhabitants to collect large amounts of fish. It is unclear whether the current dam is original (which seems unlikely), or perhaps is the remnants of later iterations built and maintained by later cultures in the area. Or perhaps it may have been restored for demonstration prepared. In any case, I have lived in the area for 13 years and never visited until today. It was very worthwhile and I intend to return in the future. Total time spent including visiting the museum, wandering the grounds, and hiking most of the trails was approximately 90 minutes. Admission was $6 for a regular Joe like me.
Alot of walking. Dont go in the dead of summer.
Natural American history that was so informative
It's pretty good
Took my kids here for a field trip. Very fun!
It was so nice there, and the people there know much about the site.
Truly a unique place! Very much enjoyed all the beautiful wildflowers and scenic views while we walked the mounds.
Good walking access to mounds, though not for handicapped. Nothing but a good view to see from the tops—almost all artifacts from the mounds are off-site at museums and at universities for study—no reenactment buildings on mounds. Inside museum good, with originals and replicas, staff very helpful and knowledgeable, and a nice documentary film. Hours of operation very good. Takes some imagination to grasp the scale of the town and its origins, without extra study.
It was something unique. Loved the quiet. The river was very nice and there's a picnic area
It was beautiful but we weren't expecting to have to pay to get in.
Very informative. The information given indoors and outdoors painted a good picture of that culture.
Was driving by looking for a dam, it stumbled upon this place. So glad we did! So amazing to experience this. The mounds were so huge! So much fun for my son to run around for a bit to.
Take your kids here and teach them some local history! The museum is great and the "mounds" are really huge pyramids! Very cool to see, and a great stop on your way to the mountains.
Photos really don't do the place justice. You have to see it, experience it for yourself. Wear your best walking shoes and take some water though! The largest mound is said to be six stories high. I would love to take a tent up there and camp overnight, and take a telescope to look at the sky. It would be awesome but isn't allowed as yet. In addition to the mounds, there is a museum, a beautiful nature walk, and the Etowah River is on the other side of the mounds. Plenty of history to learn from the museum and the markers placed at the mounds and other strategic spots. There are a number of picnic tables around the parking lot if you want to bring some lunch.
Great place to see Fall colors without driving all the way to the mountains. Temps in the fall & spring are nice for walking the trails as the only shade in the summer time is near the river.
Pretty cool place for native American history!
A small, beautiful spot steeped in history. The staff has done such an exceptional job keeping this historic site preserved and scenic. One can feel the energy and history just walking around the mounds and the nature path that encirles the main area has nice little picturesque surprises in it. Great if you're not looking for a huge walk but still want to get out and see something truly unique.
Really nice park and little museum. 6$ admission for adults. Great educational opportunity for kids and adults alike. Beautiful river walk.
Very neat place. A great history lesson.
,, absolutely amazing place so much history and evidence of how Native Americans utilized the land. Visit the wonderful museum and view relics and artifacts found in the area as well as watch a film on a giant screen of the history the area holds. The entire experience takes you back to the 1500's when the plaza was bustling with people, kids played in the village families tended to their crops, and others kept watch at the defensive ditches. This 54-acre site offers 3 earthen mounds in which you can walk to the top. There is also Picnic area for your packed lunch. Must see!!!
Very beautiful spot and easy to explore the area.
What a fascinating, rich history to learn about this area. Thank you for preserving it for generations to come and see.
I visited here in May of 2018. It was a clean Park, well organized, with nice trails. It cost $8 for myself and my one year old to enter. The guide gave us a five minute introduction to the history and sites of the park. Then we walked outside to check out the Mounds and fishtrap. We also took the nature trail around one side of the park. The trails were pleasant and well lit. The nature trail was shaded most of the way. My son really loved seeing Turtles laying on the logs in the water of the river. There was ample parking and plenty of spaces open at 10 a.m. on Tuesday. After our walk, we ate lunch at the picnic tables next to the parking lot. It was a large green space with plenty of trees for shade. My son loved running around and playing with sticks and leaves. It was wonderful to spend all morning out in nature. We spent 4 hours total. This is an amazing historical site, worth checking out if you are passing by or live in the area.
Not a bad price for all of the educational information. The gift shop is a little small, but we were a bit crowded due to it being a field trip for my nephew. It was definitely fun!
Always a great experience to see how ppl survived in the old days.
Wonderful, educational, and entertaining. We even we're allowed to bring our pug and beagle onto the minds and Park with us!!! Located by a beautiful and peaceful river. The on-site museum was perfect!
Very interesting and fun.
Must see. Wonder history and artifacts.
This is a well-maintained park that is lovely for walking and picnicking. I have been to other Mounds specifically Moundville in Alabama that was much more worthwhile in depicting the historic aspect of the Mounds.
Such a great preservation of history! The state does a great job of painting a story of the past for you. We will be back again.
Really enjoyed. Lee was able to answer most allof my questions.
Love soaking up history! Amazing what can be done with hard manual labor and ha d tools.
Another Pilgrimage spot for Cherokees.
Wonderful place to gain knowledge of southern native American history
Tremendous trails around the park with the tree alley and rivertrail being the highlights. Views from the mounds are amazing. Walking around the park where many of the rich foodstuffs like walnut trees and river fish are still available to enjoy in the area really connects you with the past.
Great place to learn some Native American history.
Fascinating place. Small but interesting exhibit. Take a guided tour to really learn about the history.
Excellent site to explore a number of large Indian mounds. Nice museum and movie onsite. It also sits on a river.
Loved this place! Scenic and educational. Love all info about our indigenous peoples.
As a Creek native i am glad so many are enjoying the culture but please don't forget it is still occupied land ,and you dishonor the native people every time you call us Indians we are not.
Not a whole lot to see here. The mounds themselves are the main attraction and are worth the trip. The park rangers were super friendly and knowledgeable. The museum left a bit to be desired but they offer a historical educational video in the back room. Surprisingly there's nice Indian inspired artwork and jewelry for sale in the gift shop. Admission is $5 per adult.
Awesome visit! The staff is incredible and very friendly and knowledgeable and the site is wonderful. The artifacts in the museum were amazing and not what you might expect from Native American sites. A very close resemblance to South American cultures.... makes me want to dig deeper into this culture and their history. My boys loved in and were fascinated with the site as well.
Really interesting example of native American mounds. There is a short nature trail along the river. During the low flow times there is a fish weir visible. The visit center also has a multi level geo cache that you have to find the answer to questions from plaques in the park to open.
A historical site of Mississippian culture. Well maintained and a cool place to go when the weather is cool.
Me and my family really enjoyed this place. Staff is super friendly. We enjoyed learning the history of this place. We came on a whim while camping on Allatoona lake for Father’s Day. Glad we did!
I found this place by accident on my way to another attraction and wound up spending half my day here. The gentleman at the front counter was super friendly and helpful and even suggested other attractions to enhance my experience. I was impressed by the great knowledge inside the small museum part and wandering around the grounds was beautiful and a great place to connect with the earth.
This is one of Georgia's hidden treasures. I have been here twice and each time there's something new I discover. Definitely start with the museum inside and get to see the artifacts found at the site and others from the southeastern area of the states. After seeing the museum walk out to see a recreation of one of the huts the natives use to build. We were there on a hot summer day and it was remarkably cool inside. There is a good bit of walking so have water and good walking shoes. If you have time and energy I'd start with the smallest mound which is the furthest walk down the walkway. You pass the largest and the medium sized one before you get to the tallest. The property is very well kept and you get some awesome views of the area.
When I was there I felt that, as humans we have ancient connections. The view of the mountains around the valley is breathtaking. The river is so peaceful to watch. It’s very humbling to know that people used to live there with all the vigor and jest and now that land lays quietly as if nothing ever happened there. We come and go. We worry so much about our lives. And these places remind us that people like us have been coming and going. It’s very peaceful.
It's an amazing, mostly unknown fact that several Native American cultures existed prior to the present one's. The Mississppians, ancestors of today's Mohegan (Creek) people, constructed a massive empire spanning all the rivers from the Gulf of Mexico to the Great Lakes. Etowah is Atlanta's part of that great empire.
A lovely place to walk around and learn the history of the area.
Cool place. Pleasantly surprised.
Great place for a visit. Holds the attention of young and old.
Amazing experience. We are so lucky these sites aren't a subdivision. The site is well preserved and maintained. The museum was mind blowing. The nature trail was relaxing. The staff was extremely helpful and informative. 4hrs just flew by.
Did not know all the Indian heritage here in GA . A must see for yourself . My kids loved the park.
Great history and beautiful location on the river.
Lots of fascinating history
We went to see the mounds and site. It was great. Very peaceful. No one was there when we were so didn't have to worry about people. They have restrooms &picnic tables and they are under heavy shade. Good for adults & kids. I heard that they have school field trips come in frequently. They also have artifacts they have found on site there that told about how the indians lived back then. You will enjoy your visit.
I dug around with a shovel one time and found all kinds of arrowhead rocks and pottery . The lady kept telling me, “ sir please stop that!” I told her it’s ok cause my grandma was part Cherokee.
We went to this place today. Number one it was easy to find. We have found Google on our phone to be a wonderful GPS. It was a very interesting place to be. We did a self tour as there were a couple of loads of school children their tying up the Rangers. We still learned a lot even on our own. We did catch up to the one Ranger and listen to some of what he had to say. Young man was very informative. He had been coming to this place since he was in first grade and now works there. They have a little Museum there that is chock-full of stuff for you to look at and full of information about the Indians that lived there. There's also a movie you can see that explains a little bit about the area and the Indians. That way it helps you understand things better.
Incredible historic site of Indian mounds. You can walk on an authentic mound once inhabited by Indian chiefs and take in the views similar to what they saw. They also have some recreated mounds where others stood and were destroyed. Loved the museum with world class artifacts! I'd advise going early before the
Very interesting historical place
Interesting place to visit if you like native American culture. Very good job of representing the historical society be of the location and it's inhabitants.
This place is fantastic!!!!!!! My son had a 2nd grade class field trip. They taught us so much. Very detailed information.
Beautiful views and relaxing to just walk and enjoy. Lots of history, if you make the time the museum is really interesting and they play a movie that talks about all the history.
Nice museum. Great park service host. Very interesting native american history.
Excellent museum to complement the Southeastern Ceremonial style/layout tour
An amazing historical site that everyone should see. Admittance is very inexpensive. On this trip we also did things such as the aquarium, and all my kids could talk about was Indian mounds. This stop is also great to let the kids burn off some energy.
This place is magical. I went back in time for few hours. Worth the visit
Beautiful location with so much history.
This is a great, well-maintained place. There isn't a whole lot to "do" there and you'd be unlikely to spend more than a couple hours, but what you can see and learn is really cool. An exciting look into North America's long and complex history.
This is the second time I've visited the Etowah Mounds. Absolutely incredible. A thriving civilization once lived here.
Beautiful energy at this site. This was my first Indian mound trip and it won't be my last. The area has a on site museum that shows you the inception of the native culture here and the day to day activities.
Very well kept. Enjoyable visit.
Interesting place but you really do not know why the mounds. Akin to the pyramids of Mexico as was the display of art works in the museum.
A good walk into the past. I love how you get to climb up to the top.
Loved this place, the history, and the grounds! Loved that my dog could accompany me :)
Love the history here! Stay off the ceremonial mounds, they're hallowed grounds! The chiefs mound was significant but not sacred, and the others were for burial and religious purposes. They deserve our respect. Wish we could go back and learn from this peaceful culture.
REALLY fun! My 9 and 5 yr old loved it! Gorgeous area!
I loved all the artifacts, but this museum is due a renovation. The lighting is very outdated and it is hard to view anything without glass glare.
This is a place with no shade, go when the weather is cooler. Wonderful museum with lots of artifacts and a knowledgeable staff. Great views of the Etowah river. Depending on the dam flow you might get to see the fish dams.
It is a little Off the besten tracks, but it is really highly educative. The museum gives you a great overview on the mounts and their historical and cultural importance and how Etowah looked in its Peak times. The mounds are even more impressive! All created by hand, they are really huge. Walk araound, take a look, there is a lot that can be diacovered there.
The museum was interesting with a lot of items from the area on display. There is a short film describing some of the history of native Americans. The staff was great. One of them too the time to walk around the museum with us and talk about the items and history of the area.
Interesting place. Drives home how sophisticated native American culture was before European diseases decimated it.
I enjoyed the experience was disappointed their wasn’t even a hit on top of the mound. Nice place if you are interested in Native American History, pretty quick.. wouldn’t go out of my way or go back a second time but learning about them was interesting.
There was a lot of walking but it was cool
Nice glimpse of history tucked away among farmland. Great place, not far from the Atlanta area, to bring kids for a history lesson on native tribes in the area.
It's a great small museum, and an amazing archaeological site to explore. Highly recommend.
It's a small museum but the nature trail and mounds were.interesting to read about..
Ancient, peaceful, informative, hands-on (got a chance to handle primative tools.
Awesome views, and educational museum.
One of my favorite places! Very informative. Up on top of the mounds is so serene as is sitting by the river.
Very neat experience and informative, don't go during the hear of the day though. No shade except down by the river. It was hot!
Didn't the Cherokee win a supreme Court battle that acknowledge their country?.... No wonder why an army is important
AMAZING
It was a great educational experience for the entire family.
Never think twice about seeing a piece of history. Just be prepared for the open skies and the heat. Nice small museum too.
Didn't get to spend as much time here, also couldn't climb the stairs but very informative
Beautiful, historic. Definitely worth seeing.
Very nice place to visit. A lot of artifacts on didplay. Staff was excellent and very informative.
Beautiful. Quiet. Wonderful place. Glad it is being preserved.
Amazing story being told here. Stop by if you have the time
A very special arqueological site in th U S A
I was here for a field trip for the Elementary school that my 2nd grader goes to. Admission for the chaperones was $3.50 from the original $6 for Adults. It was a guided tour that started with a short video of the history of the Etowah Indian Mounds. Then we were guided through the museum looking at all kinds of artifacts. We then went outside on the grounds of the mounds. There was a park ranger giving a tutorial on the different types of weapons, pottery, tools, etc that were used during the time period. It was a lot of fun and very informative. Then we headed to the tallest mound where the chief would have given speeches to the tribe. It's 63 ft high with at least 100 stairs leading to the top! And then we walked along the Etowah River. It was a great day to enjoy the open air and all of the views to take in! Thanks for reading and enjoy your future visit!
The Etowah Mounds were amazing! It’s a bit hidden at first, but it’s easy to see after you turn onto the road it’s on. You have to pay admission, but it’s not too expensive. There’s a museum and a video, both filled with amazing facts and artifacts. Right out side, you’ll see the mounds and other sites like the defensive trench. It’s a nice walk to the mounds and the river. The gift shop is on the smaller side, but it’s still good. This is a great place to bring your kids.
The most impressive site of Mississippian culture that I have ever seen
I remember going when I was a kid, but my most recent visit was a great experience. So much heritage and history. There are great informative plaques around the property that give you a glimpse into the Cherokee people who lived here. This is a very affordable trip, and absolutely worth the time spent.
It's pretty nice here. I wished they had more activities for visitors outside if walking the mounds. I come each year with my students. This year, the gift shop didn't have much and it was just blah. The museum had glass that needed to be replaced (one exhibit had it's glass case literally laying down in top of the display). It would be nice to have more replicas if the houses on the top of the mounds and even in the fields. But I understand that this was government funded so nothing more will probably be added.
Very enjoyable with good museum, film and outside mounds.
Every American should visit this site. It's so historic and it provides amazing insight into the lives of people who lived here hundreds of years ago! Even if you're not interested in the history, there's a pretty river with a nice place to walk.
We had such a good time! The view from the top of the big mound is amazing!
Wonderful small museum with a great collection of exhibits bringing to life Native American life. Interesting visit.
This is one of my favorite historical sites. I appreciate that it is maintained as authenticly as possible and is nicely honest.
Wow what an amazing place.. so humbling almost reverent can't wait to go back
Beautiful. Had a great day here with the family. We took food and ate at the picnic area before we went in. Gem of the south. Took a long walk in the nature trail.
It's very nice but hot
Have energy. Lots of walking. No walk in mounds here. Great energy though
Very cool place and a nice location. Me and the pup had a great time.
Great educational site on the ancient Etowah Indians, I was expecting to see 6 mounds as stated on their website but it was only 3 actually left. The video was very informative but sad seeing how the Europeans were so greedy to take and kill others for their land and forcibly removed them and other Indian Tribes “The Trail of Tears” so sad because many died! Friendly staff
Brought a group of kids on a field trip...3rd grade..they seemed to have enjoyed it
Super Historical location
Felt as if I was walking back in time you could almost see and feel the Indians all around you it was a very neat experience for me I could spend days here staff is very knowledgeable and out going
Very informative. An inexpensive place to take the children and cultivate their questions.
Important American history.
A lot of history to be learned here. Programs for kids. Mostly self guided. There are stairs that you have to climb to get to the top of the 3 mounds. Don't forget to walk to the river.
Neat place for a school outing. Very well informed tour guide.
It was raining. But the information at this historic site was great stuff. Had a good time.
Great place for a picnic. Great historical stop!
