REVIEWS OF The Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum IN Florida

Scott Kalb

I liked the cats a lot!!! They are adorable. A great historical journey of Hemingway's Key West home. There are posters all over the wall as well as placards explaining the history of the house. You can take a guided tour or walk the grounds yourself.

Tammy

Finally went through Papa's house. Awesome experience. Our guide Doug, was so knowledgeable and friendly. This tour should be on everyone's list of "must do" things in Key West!

Ace Castle

The only things I knew about Ernest Hemingway before this tour was he was an author and it was one of the few places in Key West that I had not been to that apparently everyone goes too. It was very interesting. We had Chris and he seemed so personally invested in the tour and history of the house. He was a great tour guide and if you have a chance to pick, I would definitely pick him.

Julie Thomas

Had a good time touring this location. The cats were the best part. It was a little crowded for my liking hence the 4 star.

will howard

This place is a lot of fun. I wasn't expecting much, but we took the free tour and it was a blast. Our tour guide was extremely knowledgeable and funny. This is definitely a fun place to see if you're in Key West. Plus.... six toed cats!

Sandy Goad

Loved our tour guide! Highly passionate about the history! Cats are cool, saw one that looked like the twin of one I had years ago.

Brad Bern

What a wonderful place, had our wedding reception here and came back a few years later to enjoy. Great property, great story and great guides to tell the story with immense enthusiasm. I'd recommend spending some time on this historic property!

Martina D

Great place to get the feel for Hemingway himself. Guided tour is worth it, and our guide was a local and very knowledgeable. Definitely worth it! Support the locals and enjoy this spot!

Liz Beth

Very cool place, lots of information and cool stuff to checkout. The guided tour is definitely worth it! I love all the cats ❤️

Tonya Allison

We were there a couple of weeks ago and absolutely loved it. We took the guided tour and the staff was wonderful, saw several of the famous 6 toe cats. Definitely worth going to!

Jessica Cardenas

The tourguide was so knowledgeable and kept your attention You can come and go around the guided tour. The lot seems small but is very large. His home is in mint condition. Cats still live all over the property and are friendly. I really loved walking around and seeing this. It's a must for the Key West Experience!

Derek Schott

Come on, put your drink down and get some culture. Check out this small piece of history and who can't resist six toed felines!

Bill Enslen

It's four stars if you're a Hemingway aficionado, otherwise it's a nice old house with an interesting history. They accept cash only for the entrance fee.

Daniel Jenkins

Great experience. I've been coming many years and wanted to come. The gardens were beautiful and the history behind the house was amazing. The tour staff was awesome

Michelle Villegas

Wear covered shoes! Cant tell you how many times my feet were stepped on by other tourists...if you are claustrophobic dont do the guided tour, they shove you together in corners and because people arent paying attention they step on you! Otherwise a great place to visit..enjoy !

Carryl Gabrielle

Great place for history buffs. Lots of things to see. Gorgeous Hemingway house. Beautiful gardens to roam.

James Leake

Highly recommend. The guide who looks like Me. Smithers from the Simpsons likes to rag on the visitors. You'll find him funny or annoying depending on your brand of humour. I could have done without.

Ricky Salinas

Going along with other reviews, place is amazing. We had an awesome tour guide and well with a GREAT passion for his job. Loved seeing all the cats and you will learn lots about Ernest Hemingway.

L B

Fourth time there and service is always pleasant. Wonderful history and love the cats!

christine hoffmann

Must see experience in Key West. The house has original furniture including Hemingway's writing room where he completed 9 of his novels. Photos and memorabilia show what life was like living, fishing, and drinking in the keys. Wonderful! Fellow cat allergy sufferers, take your meds before visiting because there are 59 cats on site! The whole estate is covered in dander and the grounds have a distinct eau du chat pee. Remember to bring cash for the entrance fees as credit cards are not accepted. Enjoy!

Gillian Pothecary

Thought it was very interesting. Guide was excellent. Cats of course were very cute

Tammy smith

Was worth the money, and very interesting. There are a lot of stairs, so be prepared if you want to see it all, you have to climb them. The grounds were lovely, I'd gladly visit again.

Vadim Zaikov

Definitely worth to visit. it's just looks more people are interested about cats :)

Wade Williams

We really enjoyed this place. It is rich with history of Hemingway and his life. There are all kinds of photos, trinkets and items that were important to him and his life. The house itself is beautiful and the gardens are well-kept. The swimming pool was nice too. There is a gift shop on the grounds as well. There is a guided tour you can listen in on and you can learn all about Hemingway’s life. The biggest surprise was the many cats roaming the grounds. There were so many of them and you can even pet them. For the price, it’s a must-see attraction in the Keys.

David Olach

The Ernest Hemingway Museum was a quirky and unique place to visit on my trip to Key West. There is plenty of Ernest Hemingway all over the island but this museum is the home he actually lived in. There is a ton of history on this property and a ton of cats! We did a little guided tour and enjoyed the extra tidbits we got to learn about Hemingway's life and the property itself.

google user

Cash only entrance fee! Be aware A lot of cats over 50 on the property- my child being highly allergic to cats needed to be careful what he touched. Friendly knowledgeable staff and many memorabilia’s kept in great condition.

Nori Echeverria

I liked the story teller, she was so pasioned with every story bringing to the present details lived by Hamingway and lovers.

Matt Anderson

Great history and extremely interesting. Your experience will vary depending on your tour guide. Lots of cats and pretty busy almost any time is open.

Michael Kerr

Well worth the visit to see this place. A piece of American literary history.

Damien Spencer

Great tours! Informative and funny guide that gave us a tour of the home. If you are a Hemingway fan this is a must.

krissy b

Such a great experience! You can either take the tour or just walk freely around the house. I suggest taking the tour to get all the history and information, and then walk around the house and garden. Our guide, Steve, was one of the best tour guides we've had. A big plus was to meet all of the Hemingway cats too!

Hao Liou

Notice that you can use only cash to enter there. I visited there and knew many stories about the famous writer Hemingway. The staffs there are friendly and they have a paper guide in mandarin to help me to have a better understandings. I also saw many special cats there , I don’t know why are they sleeping all the time.

Spectre M

History. Cats. Lots and lots of cats. Honestly, what more of treat can one ask for? Our tour guide was very knowledgeable and very obviously passionate about Hemingway, and his enthusiasm and love for the house, rich history, the Hemingway family legacy, and the cats just shined through every story and tidbits of information he'd share with us. I was lucky in that my tour group, though large, was very respectful all around, including the kids who seemed genuinely interested in what the guide was saying. But of course, the most endearing and arguably most entertaining aspect of the Hemingway house were all the sweet cats! All of them were friendly and well cared for and so sleepy!! The extra toes were an additional, adorable bonus. I definitely recommend stopping by if you're in town. This was definitely my favorite aspect of our small trip.

Chris Bellor

We had a great visit! Showed up right at opening and took the tour. Our tour guide Chris was very informative, funny and knew all the right stuff to keep your attention...not a boring tour at all. You could tell he was really into Hemingway! I recommend anyone coming to key west to stop by even if you're not a Hemingway fan.

Chris Cook

We had an informative tour guide that was really into the history of Hemingway. This place is cash only. Some of the stories were funny. The cats are well cared for here. There are multiple staircases here so those that can't climb stairs won't get the full experience. This is one of those places you will check off your list and most likely not go back once you've seen it once.

chuckling charlie

I loved the history & all the nostalgia of this beautiful home. They now have 59 cats & a lot of them have the 6 toes that are known as Hemingway cats. It is a elegant quiet place to spend a couple of hours touring the house & grounds. It is $14.00 but I thought it was well worth it.

Pierce Tibma

Great tour, I enjoyed it greatly. My wife who isn't normally a museum can really enjoyed the tour and how personable the guide was. I would recommend it to anyone who come to the keys.

Jackie Doty

Just Amazing! Our tour guide Chris was GREAT! He had so much passion and knowledge of the house and Ernest Hemingway. We learned things that we never knew before which was wonderful! I recommend a visit here, we cannot wait to go back! Oh and the CATS are too cute!! A must see!

James Frey

We had a great time vising the Hemingway House. Our tour guide was interesting and extremely knowledgeable on everything Hemingway. We loved strolling around the garden and petting the cats.

Jacki Shafer

Loved it. Great tour. Lots of funny stories about his great adventures.

Kiva Talty

I understand its historical importance, but the locale itself definitely has seen heavy tourist activity. The decor and house itself are beautiful, but the admission cost was more than I'd be willing to spend again for a walk around the property. The tour was wonderful, and our guide was very knowledgeable. But the fact that they turned a portion of the place into a gift shop ruined the appeal for me. Not to mention there still exists some decor in the house from a bygone era that maybe someone should consider removing given that decor is considered racist now.

Kyle Wohrle

Our tour guide was excellent. The grounds are beautiful and we would definitely recommend this place.

Randy Sayers

It looked nice from the outside. They wanted $14 a piece to get on the property. I didn't need to see it that bad.

Kara Kelly

Our tour guide was an amazing story-teller. She made each part of Hemingway's life so interesting. I loved all 50-60 of the cats there as well. It was a really neat experience!

dawn Jackson

Well worth a,visit. Really enjoyed this house and the history. Brilliant and Lovely place to visit.

Jennifer M

Very interesting man that Hemingway. I love the fact that he loved cats and really took care of them. The little cemetary with the head stones for the cats that passed away shows me he had a good heart.

Maria Labrador Harper

If your coming from a cruise ship and they trolley you to town...be prepared to walk a long way from the drop off point. We urge red back to drop off point. It was a cool place but seen most of the house from web pictures. The exciting part-if your a cat lover is all the cats have 6 toes. That was my highlight.

April Elliott

Great Museum. However, the admission booth seriously needs to get with the times and take credit or debit cards. The displays on Hemingway's life are great. The cats are very friendly.

Shelby McL

Love, love, loved visiting this house! Such a beautiful house and cute cats every where! My family and I luckily went on day that wasn't full so we didn't have to wait in line. I can't not remember our tour guides name, he was a older man but he was awesome and funny. I think my favorite Hemingway story would have to be about the swimming pool and penny. My kids were loving on the cats and you can definitely tell the cats like the attention, it was neat seeing some with 6 toes. Hemingway's "man cave" was neat as well. Planning on visiting again. 3/9/19

e johnston

Guided tours give lots of info on his life here and elsewhere. Currently, 59 cats , descendants of snow white still live on the property. About half have 6 toes.

Cristina Ferrer Lopez

A must see when in Key West. The house is lovely and you learn some interesting facts about Hemingway. The cats on the property are a HUGE bonus! Fun for all ages. Our tour guide Sara was friendly and kind enough to try to entertain the kids in our group.

Dawn Dickerson

Food was great service was excellent a little pricier than anticipated however for two people 1 appetizer 2 bowls of soup 2 entrees and 2 alcoholic beverages was just over $100

Matt Strouble

Amazing history and the tour guides were very entertaining. Loved the cats. I would highly recommend.

Brad Holt

Guided tour was excellent! This is a interesting place if you like Hemingway and/or six toed cats.

Elizabeth Pepperdine

This was a fun experience! History buffs will love it. It’s a beautiful house and we enjoyed seeing all the six-toed cats. The tour was a little pricey, but we had a fun, knowledgeable guide.

Erisa Bytyqi

Amazing experience! Definitely stop by if your passing by this museum. It’s well worth your time. The staff in general & the tour guys in particular were incredibly knowledgeable as well as friendly.

Nicholas Pratt

We had an awesome time! Loved seeing all the cats! Doug was our tour guide and he was awesome! He was so knowledgeable about the home and made the tour very interactive. Best tour I have ever been on thanks to Doug!

Christopher Leyva

Amazing history. Worth taking a guided tour. Tour guides very knowledge and tell a great story but avoid the fat mean lady... she seems to hate children

LingDynasty

Came up from Miami to spend a day while the weather is still comfortable. Decided to visit places I have not been to since I was a child and Hemingway House was one of my stops. Liked the grounds, the stories and most of the house. Could do without the Hollywood memorabilia, but maybe it's helpful to those who don't know much about Ernest Hemingway. House is lovely and is well kept and your guides did and excellent job providing visitors with information on Hemingway, his life and the property. Glad I visited. Was worth the modest entry fee.

Chip Couch

I had visited here while a college student back in the 90’s. Did not appreciate it then so I am glad I came back while in Key West. Informative and humorous tour guide. House is well maintained and fun having all the cats around. Downside is that I wanted to jump in the pool on this hot and muggy day.

Lisa L

Been on this 30-40 minute tour a few times, and always enjoy it. When you have a guide with a good sense of humor, the time zips by, even in the heat and humidity. You'll pick up some really interesting snippits about Hemingway's life and prolific career, AND get to know some of the 50+ cats living on the property-- many of them descendants of Hemingway's polydactyl cats! (All named after celebrities, following Hemingway's tradition.)

Ashley Ingram

It was nice to see where he lived and our tour guide was great at explaining the history of the place.

Cindy Norris

Cats were sweet. Plants were amazing. The house was amazing. We enjoyed all of it.

derek Salomonsen

Have come here a couple times now and enjoyed the experience and guided tour each time. You also have the freedom to roam the property at your own leisure. Tour guides are very enthusiastic and informative on the history of Hemingway. Would defenitely recommend to anyone visiting Key West.

Jim Fleckenstein

Well-kept, great history, interesting tour, fun cats. Stop by if you come to Key West. We like the hop-on/off bus or train... they go by here on their tour.

Samantha Mauk

Really cool historical site. Awesome items and stories from hemingway's life and super friendly kitties! One apparently has a regular spot on the bed because mom says it was there the last time she went too. Got to hear a couple of stories from the tour guides, but the groups were fairly large and we wanted to set our own pace so we could see the rest of key west in time to get back to our ship. Highly recommended.

Evgeny Shokin

Interesting house of interesting man. Get a tour and you will hear a lot of great stories of his life.

A. Zak

A piece of history from one of the world's most famous writers, the Hemingway house is definitely worth a visit. Everything was frozen in time and it was great to see the way he lived. The tour guide was great and The polydactyl cats were pretty friendly as well.

Christina Woods

Great place with lots of history! Definitely worth it! Not as many cats as there were last time I visited but there are still plenty!!

Robyn Hood

Great place too see, if you are allergic to cats don't go in. Garden is beautiful. The history is awesome

Henry Katz

We had an extremely knowledgeable tour guide that remarked upon all the rooms with additional insight on the many foibles of the writer. Literally dozens of cats occupied furniture in what one might believe to be the most meticulously staged positions completely blase to the numerous comments and pettings from onlookers. The remainder were carefully placed in the shadier outdoor spots. A good number clearly displayed an apposed thumb as descendants of a 6 toed matriarch. Book store did contain the latest documentary detailing the writer's covert activities as leaked from a Soviet defector.

Kelly Cudd

Beautiful house full of history.. definetly enjoyed the tour. I did think $14 a person was pricey but I understand that is the going rate

Jessica Hidalgo

4 stars because the property was beautiful, but our tour guide had a negative approach to touring the group! Elderly woman with short brown hair on 4/17/19 - kept mentioning that she prefers people leave the group half way through the tour, and the more that leave the better. She kept mentioning that people annoy her, and I get it - tourist jobs are not fun to deal with the public but you don't have to work there and you can keep your opinions to yourself to spare the bad taste you leave in the people visiting the home! As I was exiting the property, she rudely asked me to get out of her way when I was taking a photo of a cat. Loved the home, but wish she did not work there!

Amber

I had such a wonderful time here in the past so I knew I had to take my son since he is a cat lover! We took the self guided tour because the tour group was huge and too hard for a 7 year old to be patient for. My son enjoyed the gardens with all the cats most of all! I would love to take him back when he is a little bit older to enjoy the history of the home.

Morgan Myers

Amazing experience! I honestly can’t wait to come back. Our tour guide Chris was awesome and super passionate. We haven’t stopped talking about the tour! We came for the cats but it overall ended up being he best part of our trip!

Wil Price

Perfect. Take the 30 minute tour first. Tip your guide. Then relax and explore everything on your own. Be careful petting the cats, some will bite.

Don Windrem

Good historic telling of Hemingway's Key West time and the stories he wrote during this time. The house is still beautiful and in very good condition and the stories are fantastic. Whether you like him or hate him, he lead an interesting life.

Gene Hetzel

We had an excellent guide who was extremely knowledgeable about Hemingway's life. Very interesting house with numerous photos and relics of his life.

Yi Xiang

It's definitely interesting but also small...tour guide made it more fun but doesn't feel worth $14, lots of cats... mostly lovely until you touch them too much, they will try scratch you just like any cats...

Meaghan Colerick

Definitely worth visiting.. esp if you love Hemingway! Our your guide Chris was amazing and the cats with extras toes were all great!

Jennifer Potter

I loved this place! It's not very large, but has cats in every corner and a great history. A big portion of it is outdoors, so I don't reccommend it on a very hot day. The women who give the tours are very animated, entertaining, and full of great information. You must do the tour if you go, it's what makes the place so much fun.

Betty King

Enjoyed hearing the personal stories about his life and his importance to American literature. The small bookstore has a good book with pictures of the house and grounds.

Mary G

Loved the full tour! Will definitely return to learn more on my next visit. Such an adventurous soul!

Stephanie W

$14 a ticket and they ONLY take cash. I’m not a big fan of Hemingway, but we’re in Key West so I figured we’d check it out... and I wanted to see the cats. The tour was a lot more interesting than If expected. We had a great tour guide who provided a ton of info about Hemingway and the six-toed cats. Just the house itself was interesting.

Douglas Clark

Didn't go inside: expensive admission. Was nice looking home from outside

Terry Shelton

Beautiful home and grounds. The tour guides are fantastic. And you get to pet cats.

Archie Cone

Awesome museum. Rusty was our tour guide and he was very funny and knowledgeable. Highly recommended stop while in Key West, the property is gorgeous and you can learn quite a bit as well. Be sure to check our the writing studio that is left in tact from the 1930’s.

Joseph M. Gerace

Amazing tours! Great history. Lovely gift shop; I bought a dad hat with a Marlin on it. The cats are everywhere; the tour guide said there are more than 50 of them sprawled out on the property. Visit Moondog for grub afterwards.

Ramces Chirino

This is a must-see attraction if you're in the area. They have several guides walking groups around and they're all very knowledgeable about Hemingway's history and that particular home. Although at the end of the day it is just a home, the tour lasted about 30 minutes and the place is filled with memorabilia and the cats Hemingway was famous for collecting.

christopher galvin

A great place to escape to. Time stands still, and it can certainly be said that Ernest Hemingway lived in interesting times. Come for the author, stay for the architecture. The beautiful polydactyl cats serve as emissaries to a moment frozen and a generation lost.

Jeff Allen

Well worth the time and donation to visit this very cool historic home of Ernest Hemingway. Be sure to take the time to be a part of a guided tour to learn so much about the history of the home and of the man himself.

Raz Mom

Nicely preserved house. Interesting to see life as it was then. A collection of “Hemingway cats” the 6 toed cats, own the property. Have little cat houses in the garden and a cemetery with a list of those passed on that are named for famous people. Very interesting life as depicted in displays. Definitely recommend the stop.

Ling Qin

I really enjoyed the guided tour that’s included in the entry fee. Our tour guide was very passionate and I learnt a lot about Hemingway during the tour. Also cat spotting was a very interesting part of visiting this place. There are 55 cats, all decedents of the original six toed cat of Hemingway’s, roaming around the property and they are definitely not afraid of human company.

Maria Britan

It's a must to see while in Key West. Lots of history on this property. Great Place, beautiful and well maintained. Lots of the Hemingway's cats inside. Highly Recommended.

Justin Lammers

We had a great time visiting the Hemingway house! To feel like you were going back in time was a great experience. And we loved seeing all of the different and unique furniture on the property! The pool looked great and we also liked seeing all of the cats. Friendly staff and overall a great time!!

Jeffrey Zampitella

We were in Key West for a stop on our cruise. The cruise was booked a year ago and we've been waiting a year to visit the Every Hemingway House. We weren't disappointed. Our your guide Anne delivered the guided tour in a very professional yet very personable way. She was fantastic and very knowledgeable. We got to see at least 25 or the 55 descendents of Hemingway's snowball cat. It was a real treat to see where this amazing author, lived, raised his sons, and created works of literary art.

Chris Olson

Great to relive the early years of Ernest H.’s home. Extremely nice pad!! The tour was great and very informative and covers both floors and some of the grounds. Just a few blocks from the most Southern point in the US and just miles from Cuba.

Rebecca Rebel

Loved pur tpur guide Sarah... Love loving history

Lulu ayala

If you go to Key West, you have to go to the Ernest Hemingway home! Its such a beautiful home and the tour guides give you so much good information (you don’t have to pay extra for a tour.) There’s the cutest little gift shop there too :) Also..there’s cats everywhere!

Jason Stubbings

Key West must visit location. This place has everything - history, interesting information and most importantly - lots and lots of Poly-dactyl cats! The tour guides are amazing and make the tour very interesting and entertaining. Did I mention the cats - in 2019, 55 in residence, all direct descendants of Hemingway's original.

Heather Ennis

Overall a very worthwhile visit. Chris, our tour guide, was enthusiastic and shared so many pieces of information about Hemingway and his life. Cats were elusive but when seen were majestic. The landscaping was beautiful. The photographs on the walls took you back in time. It makes me want to read and reread everyone of Hemingway’s books. One tour guide, Sarah, was rude to me as I was sitting down close to a cat watering hole. She told me I had to move because she had a tour. There are dozens and dozens of people milling around ALL OVER that weren’t on tours. It’s just something you need to be able to flow with. To contrast, our guide wasn’t phased at all when people walked through our group; he continued with his discussion as if it didn’t happen. An example of a true professional.

michelle cornett

Very interesting place with great amazing history. BEST part I'm ashamed to say was...it had air conditioning! The heat was intense that day and it made walking around the house and grounds so much more pleasant.

Christine Gray

Great morning adventure. Learning about Hemingway and the history of the home was very interesting. The tour guide was friendly and entertaining. And the cats are a treat. I took my 3 year old and 1 year old. They loved seeing and petting the cats.

Chuck Pearsall

Very interesting tour. The house and grounds are well kept. If you take this tour you will want to move to Key West and become a writer.

Carla Ramirez

Interesting place to visit. It is full with corky stories and the cats are so fun to watch. The house is worth the visit just to see the life style of those times. Crowed but manageable. The staff are super friendly. All museums in Key West are $15 to me this one was money well invested.

Wei S

Great place to visit especially for children. The house was well maintained and stuff was very friendly. There is a free guided tour every 30 minutes that, in addition to walking through the house, provides background and stories we didn't know before. It is well worth to spend a couple of hours there if you ever visit Key West.

Emily Wells

Nice piece of history. Plenty of furry kitties to see. Make sure you look for the penny in the pool deck.

Belinda Price

A truly great experience. Highly recommend...especially to cat lovers. There are 55 cats roaming the grounds, descendant of the Hemingway's original cat. Very interesting place. Highly recommend.

Terri Gates

They offer guided tours or self guided. The guides are extremely knowledgeable and friendly. The house is well presented with preserved items, photos, stories and memorabilia. The cats were fantastic...just everywhere!! I wasn't sure if I would like this tour, but it was on my favorite things I did while in key west

Kaitlyn Study

This was a great stop on our visit to Key West. The prices were $14 per adult and they only take cash. They offer tours throughout the day here and it’s also a wedding venue. This is a picture of the pool which I thought was beautiful but what an amazing place to write and relax when it was a residence!

Sundaram LS

Try the guided tour, you will learn a lot. Guided tour tickets can be bought only at the Hemingway house & they accept only cash which I didn't like it. (Even though the tour was good, don't understand the importance of the house)

Scott Lemasters

Very cool historic location. I recommend taking the tour instead of self guiding yourself. Our tour guide Anne was great! She was funny and very knowledgeable about the property. My favorite part was all the cats! They are everywhere roaming the grounds and it makes it so enjoyable. If you're going here make sure to bring a little extra cash to tip the awesome tour guides!

Amelia Does Dinner

Would I Recommend - ✔ YES Would I Return - ✔ YES Very interesting place, with the house and grounds kept much in the manner it would have been when it was occupied. You can "self tour" or join a group tour with a guide. I would suggest the guided tour because the guides are very knowledgeable and can offer a better insight of the house, it's objects and features. Oh and there's the

christy schiro

The staff and guides are fabulous. I appreciate how they run the museum, and adore the varying degrees of humor!

Average Shmo

I enjoyed the tour. After viewing, I pondered at the thought of how lovely that area would have been before it was popular. Museum was short and sweet Will likely visit again with others. Some have commented about the odor- It's an old unoccupied house in a moist climate and there are cats so it's not "spring fresh." If you have a cat allergy be aware, otherwise, stop in.

Dana S

I came for the cats TBH, but I ended up enjoying learning about the history and lifestyle of Hemingway. We saw and were able to interact with about 15 cats....most with 6 toes! The home, gardens and most importantly, the cats, are well maintained.

David Rude

Definitely a must do for anyone but especially Hemingway fans. Tour guides were friendly and entertaining. Plenty of fun facts (stories). If you hang out after on the grounds you can listen in to the other guides and hear their spin on the tales. Some of the cats are very friendly. Told not to pick them up but twice we came across people sitting on a bench with a cat in their lap and a look on their face that said "I didn't pick it up, it just climbed up on me". Very fun!

J B

Always fantastic, we had Alicia as our tour guide. Shes full of energy and love for what she does. She brought the history to life and added humor to it as well. This was my 3rd trip, even though I know the history it's still nice to have a refresher every few years. Its al ways seeing the 6 toed cats as well

Chantel Hernandez

Gorgeous house! Cats roaming freely around, you can even pet them! The tour guide shares great information, definitely will learn something new. Lots of garden space and the gift shop is small, but great! My eight year old loved all the cats and interesting furniture in the house.

Gena Alvarez

It was a very fun and educational experience. Highly suggest taking the guided tour. Our guide was very knowledgeable and humorous, which made the experience even more enjoyable. The home is beautiful and rich in history. This is definitely a place to visit.

Mark Tremel

Amazing. The Ernest Hemingway house is a must see for Key West. The price is well worth the tour. Our guide was very good and I overheard several other very good guides also. The house is air conditioned and would be fantastic even if Hemingway did not live there.

Karen L

A must see museum! The house and history are amazing. Our tour guide, Chris Parsons, did a great job! I would highly recommend taking the tour with him.

Rachel Parton

Super interesting and the cats....ooooh the cats are wonderful!! Our tour guide was extremely informative.

Jan Zarecky

Very nice experience and an amazing guide we had. Everything in the house, garden and the writer studio is well described and the entire place feels inspiring. The cats, plants and furniture, it all goes very nice with each other and makes a pleasing harmony. I'd recommend visiting sooner and taking your time during the visit, because it's definitely worth it.

Celeste W

This tour was a good low-key family activity. Accessibility is always a concern and happily the majority of the house and grounds were power wheelchair accessible. The only area that was not doable was the upstairs areas;however, there is a video to watch which is the less crowded route to go.

Vivian Wenrich

Loved this tour. Loved the tour guide as well. Told some interesting stories about Ernest Hemingway.

Paul S

Excellent experience. Beautiful home with a lot of history, I can see why Hemingway lived there. Our tour guide was excellent - wish I could remember her name but I know she was from Maine. The tour was just the right length and you’re free to roam after and stay as long as you want. Highly recommend that you get there early - we arrived around 10:30 and left at noon, by that time the line to buy tickets stretched down the street.

Our tour guide Chris is amazing! He really set the tone of how amazing, overacomplished, and inspirational Ernest Hemingway truly is. The house apparently now has A/C so it's definitely more worth going to. The house, plants, cats, and property are really well maintained. I love cats and these 6-toed cats are petable! They are all so sweet and love head/neck rubs. Once you experience the tour/ house, it is definitely worth the $14.

Great guided tour and fun to see! Use the Duvall loop free transport bus. Takes you to both sides of the keys.

Cynthia Dugat

Interesting and informative view into Hemingway's life and home. Very well organized with friendly staff and, of course, descendants of his polydactal cat are in residence.

Jean Laws

They only take cash at the location, however, you can purchase tickets at other tourist locations like the Little White House, Aquarium, Shipwreck museum. We had a great tour with a friendly and knowledgeable tour guide.

Ricky Stechmann

Interesting, great guide, guy apparently loved his job, and is a big admirer of Hemingway; or was working hard for the recommended, but not mandatory, tip after the tour. Quite informative and enjoyable. Hemingway was a hard drinking, hard living, unforgettable character. Cats everywhere, it was ok, not a nuisance, cat lovers would like this place.

Austin Mann

Good if you like history or Hemingway. Some of the guides are very knowledgeable, even more so than the placards. Be sure to take the free tour, included in the ticket price. The cats are very fun to pet.

Denise Claus

So enjoyed walking the veranda at the Hemingway house!! The kitty's were present everywhere! My son was able to pet several! A wonderful step back in time!! If anyone is interested in beautiful plants and cool greenery you can sit on several of the benches on the grounds! They do have tours available if you chose to go on them included with your admission fee!!

Mickey Goldstein

The tour was terrific and the guide was very knowledgeable. I loved the tour, however, the house was very dirty and dusty. It looked like it needed a good cleaning. This beautiful, historic home certainly deserves better.

Ramon Rodriguez

Historic house, very nice place to stop and learn about a great writer. Take the narrated tour if you are not familiar with Hemingway's life. Be ready to fork $16 dollars to the museum. Watch out for cats on the property, there are lots of them.

Great visit. Fantastic guide Doug really knew his stuff and was pleasant too. Thanks Doug and lovely lady on the gate too!

John Barr

This place is amazing. Take the time to visit and just soak in the history. Chris is the best tour guide i have ever had anywhere he is very knowledgeable about everything and he is very personable. Ask him anything. He even knows all th cats names(like family he says)

Stephanie Aschenberg

Wow! So beautiful and full of history! We loved the tour and being able to walk around ourselves too. The cats look so happy and the lush green environment makes you feel ... well calm, relaxed, and happy. We actually were able to book this venue for our wedding in 2020!! I can’t wait to go back! ❤️

Andy Hratko

Very interesting tour we enjoyed it very much. Beautiful property.

Theresa Baschon

Stop in and walk around very beautiful property and an old house. Secret passageways and a secret writing place above the house. An entire litter Plus of 7 toed cats. The groundskeeper takes care of them and they're all very friendly and will come and actually rub up to your leg and will sit on your lap. Enjoy it if you're in Key West. Worth the meager amount they charge.

Jim Napolitano

Great house. Had a wonderful your and your guide. Cats were a plus. Very informative tour.

Jason Davis

A very interesting and fun stop by a piece of history. The tour guide was excellent and didn't cost anything (aside from tips if you choose). The cats on the property make this an extra special visit. In my photo you'll see "Hairy" S. Truman, quite the distinguished gentleman.

Larry Reese

A beautiful historic landmark that is a must see for visitors to key West. bonus if you are a cat fan as the grounds also serve as a reserve for a huge number of cats some of which you will never find anywhere else. Full of history and impeccably maintained a very pleasant way to spend an afternoon. Enjoy!

Viorica Balaban

It's so amazing, it's like you're going back in time, and they have 59 cats living in the property, for cat lovers that will be a delight!

Richard Thomas

Great place to transport back in time and learn a little history about a great American author. Then walk a bit to visit some of his favorite places on the island.

Garnett Hagee III

An incredible man with an incredible life. It was a very interesting experience reliving Earnest Hemingway's life as I toured through his house in Key West. Definitely highly recommended for everyone!

Being an author and publishing two books of my own, it is always a treat to walk into another popular author's home to see how they lived. I'm not a very big fan of cats, whether five toes or six, it doesn't matter. Although popular, the grounds present plenty of photographic opportunities. Highly recommend!

Nicole Riggs

One of my absolute favorite places to visit in Key West. The estate is so well maintained and all those big toed kitties! My daughter loved searching for cats and petting them.

Gordon O'Brien

If you're looking for cats, go here! But in all seriousness, the tour guides here are extremely passionate and informed, so while I wasn't exactly the most interested party at the beginning of my tour I definitely found myself thoroughly enjoyed by the end! A cool stop if you're looking for something interesting!

Paige Stroud

We truly enjoyed the tour. Our guide really made it. Unfortunately, I didn't get her name.

Bill Zakareckis

Great place to spend a couple of hours while in key West. Great way to relive a little history. And look for Papa's last penny. The six toed cats are cool.

Scarlet Panda

I have always loved Hemingway, so going here was a definite. The house was absolutely gorgeous. It's the best place to get an awesome picture of the lighthouse as well. My only complaint was all the cats running around! Just kidding! They are awesome and are what most people go to see. The reason I gave it only 3 stars is the fact that we were the last tour of the day, so I don't know if it was because of that or the sheer volume of people that visit, but I felt our tour was extremely rushed. There was so much more I wanted to look at up close but couldn't. Some of the art collection, photos, furniture demanded second looks that I wasn't able to get to because the size of the tour. Plus, as always, we had kids that were constantly doing things that we were told wasn't allowed, despite signs up stating to keep off the furniture. The parents would let them push adults out of the way to get to the kitties, and it was hard to take any pictures with out someone's kid in it. It's aggravating when my own kids are polite and respectful and wait their turn to do things and then you have these kids with no boundaries pushing through, aggravating the cats, climbing on furniture. It just wasn't one of our better experiences.

Really cute museum, YOU NEED CASH (when I went it was $14 a person). Really informative, just a lot of info, they do have little tours. Cute with all of the cast wandering around, definitely recommend!

Dannny Ramos

I'm not a fan of museums but this one was interesting. You get to see the home of a famous writer but even more interesting is checking out how the homes used to be back then. They have over 50 cats and some with 6 fingers on their paws. Nice pool too. Entrance fee is 14though

Marcel Freimuth

Excellent female tour guide. She knows how to perform a show. Pretty nice place. We walked to the house, big mistake a few 100m away, a parking slot is ava. Which takes only 4 dollar per hour. I highly recommanded this Location. And guys listen to the story, hemmingway seems to know best, how to deal with womans :)

Stacy Travis

Great attraction to see and learn about! Not to mention the 59 cats there. Our tour guide was fun!

Ron Brister

Fantastic oral account and various plaques to document the full life of Earnest Hemingway. Sara was an outstanding orator and answered all questions and keep the tour moving. Highly recommend if you are a cat lover. 6 toed cats!!! Just Awesome.
