Worth the visit! Pros: meticulously cared for artifacts and re-creations, staff are well-educated, friendly and passionate about this time period. Cons: the historical narrative throughout is arguably a bit whitewashed.

S Jones

The grounds are beautiful and the period actors were very friendly and informative. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit and learned a lot about the Spanish presence in Florida 100 years before the Pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock. It is worth your time and money if your in the Tallahassee area. Got lots of great pictures.

What an amazing historical gem right in the City of Tallahassee! It dates back to the 1600s, long before this was the State of Florida. It’s very well cared for and very interesting for adults and children.

You should visit this living history museum if you are in the area.

John Barberi

I have gone two years in a row with a different son each time. We take our kids on a capitol trip during their 4th grade year and we home school our children. Both of my boys that have gone have really enjoyed visiting the mission and seeing how people lived back when it was occupied. My first son enjoyed it so much, as did I, that we decided to return the next year with my second son. While there, the staff role plays various parts of the citizenry from when the fort was occupied and the area was settled with indians, soldiers and their families. Definitely worth visiting to learn about the missions in Florida and getting a new perspective on life.

Holly Marr

Beautiful historical location with A museum and grounds. Note that it has an elevator if you need one. Bathrooms, gift shop, very friendly staff.

Cary Carter

Great. Informative. Not expensive. Go when it's not quite so hot. Would have loved to have seen the living history actors. Will go back when it is cooler.

Lana Tate

Stopped here to see the winter solstice and learned a lot about the Indian Nation and very nice place to take a family trip. We we're traveling to see our son and his family.

Frank Silva

Great place to visit in Tallahassee. Prices are affordable and there is a lot to see

Lori Baldwin

Mission San Luis is a majestic and historical venue. The grounds are plentiful and the buildings are replicas of it's historical past stories of communities and it's people of the times. A great place to walk about, picnic, meditate, take the historical walk with user friendly docents and volunteers. A wonderful local for a wedding, celebration, and fiesta....the gift shop has a variety of handmade goods and items made from the blacksmiths on hand. Entrance fee is reasonable, as well as, membership fees. It's a must see mini adventure right in the heart of Tallahassee.

Death's Karma

The workers on site are very knowledgeable about the history of the area and were willing to put up with my endless stream of questions. The place is very beautiful and well kept. You can also take everything in at your own pace as you're in charge of where you want to go.

Carolyn Gallina

Reasonable price museum. Lots of history. Great area for children to run

Vito Abramowicz

Highly recommended to visit

Eric Songer

An interesting place that tells the story of party on Florida's history that I did not know.

Roselia Labbe

This place allows you to go back in time and see and feel how people lived in Tallahassee a few hundred years ago.

Eva Fiallos-Diaz

We have always loved the Mission as a family, particularly in the Fall when the weather cools off. Staff is costumed and in character (think a living museum) and ready to teach you about all the different structures such as the Apalachee Council House, Spanish Catholic Monastery, farm house, and Spanish Fort. However it is sad when you know the history of erasure that was born of these settlements. The museum is also dog friendly and has amazing annual events that bring together many of Florida's indigenous communities.

M M Gardner

Loved it all. Employees were really friendly and we learned a lot. Took under 2 hours. Go and enjoy some of America’s history.

Frankey May

Wonderful place to take your family and friends. We had our wedding here, the staff was very helpful and accommodating.

Matilda Anderson

Beautiful historic park! Must see!

Guillermo Rosado

A step back in history, with personal guides who take u back in history. Very educational.

Patricia Brown

Pine needle basket workshop was fun, historical and met new people.

Karl

The staff enjoys what they do. Very informative. Don't hesitate to ask questions! The year-long membership for 15 dollars is definitely worth it for students. I took advantage of it and have been here at least 7 or 8 times. A great way to pass time, be outdoors, and learn more about some of the lesser-known history of Florida.

Gretchen Renlund

We visited Mission San Luis on a class field trip. I have nothing but positive things to say about the staff, volunteers and period actors that helped bring the history of the mission and fort to life. The buildings are in excellent cond, and the grounds are pristine. It is clear the professionals that work here at every level truly care about its purpose and its importance in Tallahassee, Florida, and National history. Thank you for hosting Admiral Farragut Academy, we all had a great time and learned so much from everyone there that day. We really enjoyed the period actors that helped create such a vivid and real life picture of life at the fort and mission.

Lee Jordan

Beautiful. Great history lesson. I would recommend for anyone. Plan about 45 minutes.

Brian Burke

Complete with actors from the time period this place is a really fun place to take the kids or a date. Check their calendar of events for even more fun! My kids love the archery and blacksmith demonstrations.

Jason Chen

I went here for fun, granted

Ingrid Lee

Thoroughly enjoyed their solstice festival. Parking was a little slow but learned quite a bit. Had fun throwing the atlatl, seeing demonstrations of dance and stick ball...council house is a site not to miss.

Wolven Bane

I visited on a cool, January day to avoid the crowds and was pleasantly surprised that the staff was fully involved. Men and women, dressed in period appropriate costumes, act out the daily life of villages at the Mission while telling stories and answering questions. Many of the staff I spoke with (out of character) are anthropologists who genuinely enjoy what they do and it shows. The small museum of artifacts is quite interesting and most of the historical buildings can be explored. I'll definitely visit again.

Tom Watts

Great place to visit and a lot of Florida history.

Catherine Cedars

Was really a neat place. We are Appilachee Indians. My ancestors were originally from here. And ended up in Louisiana. My dad is the oldest elder of the Appilachee tribe.

Jeremy Vogel

Really cool experience for the kids. The guy at the church and the blacksmith were really cool and my kids barraged then with questions. Definitely a must see if you're in Tallahassee.

Corrine Fuller

Great local place to enjoy some history.

Andrea Luke

The history of the place. The grounds are beautiful for a wedding

igrayne madison

Omg go there for fun stuff

Vicki Neighbors

Boring. Should have been much better with the history behind it.

Timothy R. Christie

Great to see preservation of history in the middle of a big city ..

Randy Santiago

Good history of how good God was and is

Julio Basabe

Beautiful place! The interpreters were friendly, attentive and knowledgeable. Loved our visit

Trevor Rios

This historic village is so beautifully perched on a vast land and has several small areas to visit and explore . There is an old church, Friar's cottage, blacksmith shop, Apalachee council house and a Spanish cottage and each of these stations has a person dressed as in early 1700s time, and they give a brief account of the life back then. This all adds authenticity to the entire experience . Also there is an indoor museum that lays out incredible artifacts and an auditorium to show a small movie about Spanish invasion, the Indians and the mission. Must visit for history buffs.

Brendan Maddox

My sister had her wedding at this location. The grounds are nice. The staff is great. And the museum section is nice for those waiting for an event or killing time.

Clifford Wright

This is a great place to learn about culture and have fun doing it.Make sure you wear comfortable shoes because you will have to walk the grounds. But it was exciting going on the scavenger hunt and my kids enjoyed interacting with the characters, making corn meal, and helping the blacksmith make nails. I recommend this place for everyone to visit at least once.

Carol Suarez

Kinda boring but their gift shops are good.

Cynthia Padilla

Overall the grounds were clean, and employees were very informative and the demonstrations were interesting. All of the buildings are replicas of the historical time period, but some had modern day touches such as a new tent in the upstairs area of the fort. There were a lot points of interest that described what the buildings were. While I was there the blacksmith made a nail, it was a pretty quick process to observe. Also, was able to see a volunteer group I assume constructing another Point of Interest. It is a very calm and relaxing place, but from a historical standpoint there could have been more offered that may have been unique to only that area and location.

Mildred Bryant

A young lady was cooking Sunflower soup. We enjoyed watching her make it. A really cool morning with the rain.... My son enjoyed the teepees and chasing a mysterious animal around. Fun day........

Andrea Parishani

Interesting and educational site right in the middle of Tallahassee.

Jerry Edwards

Good history and visual education. Loved it.

solanumchris

Fun place, good lectures and classes

Traveler Reviews

Great place to visit with your family. A lot of preserved history. How people lived and even buried. Very quiet place. They keep the whole area in great shape. There are actual people manning the houses and certain work stations on certain days making one's experience so real. Highly recommend visiting this place.

Rodger Glover

Really interesting and impressive recreation of a Spanish mission. Lots of history. Remarkable reconstruction of native dwellings, Spanish fort, and the mission. Well worth a visit while you are in Tallahassee.

Chris Chapman

Beautiful place for a wedding. Staff is way too demanding and makes the experience suffer.

Caroline Lewis

This is a beautiful site, theres so many different parts to check out. This is a great thing to do for a family. There are people in costumes playing the roles of the original villagers who lived there, the employees are very informative and helpful.

Aaron Baughman

Such a neat place in tally to visit. The entry price is dirt cheap and it's a fun way to kill a few hours on the weekend if you are into history. They act in character too!

Kc Hertz

The whole place was great. The blacksmith was amazing to watch! Can't wait to go back for some of the festivals and stuff they have.

Wanda Jewell

Oh so nice

Jennifer Pitts

Great educational place to visit

Loida Salicrup

Beautiful location where volunteers dress like people from that time. The originals buildings were burn down but they have done a great job in imitating the buildings, utensils, clothes of that era. They show their love of what they are doing and what they are maintaining for future generations

ICS__ Preferred

Educational and interactive. The grounds are well maintained. Great place to experience alone or as a group

Lizzy Castillo

Fascinating History, beautiful walking trails and historical buildings, and fun interactive people really make this a great place to visit. Huge Plus: it's open on Sunday!

luis aguilar

Great place for your family

Katherine Hooper

A beautiful location with interesting history. We visited in late November and it was beautiful. The staff members, who are dressed in period costume, are friendly and knowledgeable. We asked them lots of questions which they happily answered and provided even more information than asked. For example, we noticed a tree that had dropped a lot of nuts that we didn't recognize and we picked on up. As we were leaving, we asked the staff in the gift shop about the nuts. They told us they were hickory nuts and described how they were used by the mission to dye the friar's robes.

Kathy Stafford

Wonderful and very informative. Loved the live displays.

Taylen Bader

Cool place, lots of interesting history. My biggest problem was that a few of the guides were a bit drab and uninterested, however this was a select few and it was an overall good experience.

Flash Ryan

What an awesome historical experience. Way more than just a Spanish mission, it's an exploration of the history of that site, from indiginious people to the end of Spanish occupation.

Brittany Gaulden

Enjoyed a great day on a field trip with my kiddos!!! Very life like and all the kids were amazed and enjoyed their time there!

Karen Kepics

Great Florida/US historic site. The first European settlers were the Spanish around 1600 AD who intermingled with the Indians. Site was later abandoned by both Spanish and Indians due to the encroaching Brittish. Really enjoyed the walking tour.

Arin Dismukes

Everyone is so nice!! The live actors are amazing they answer all questions. Love watching them and learning about their jobs!!!

Nice museum and neat outdoor exhibits. I'd recommend going on a weekend for a more interactive experience with the volunteers (especially if taking kid's).

Steve Summerlin

A very nice site to visit. The day I visited it was 105F. It was hot but enjoyable. Each actor plays their parts well, especially the friar.

Cynthia McCambridge

Love the living history here. I enjoy asking questions!

Living musuem, basically a replica of what was once there with period actors. Even better, they have workshop courses for the stuff you want to learn in detail. Blacksmith courses are backed up for months tho.

Jessica Perkins

Beautiful and interesting.

A very well done, well kept part of Fla history.

Dawn Lyons

Excellent archival for archeology and history! Paul and Maureen spoke with us in depth about a wealth of Florida history. God bless each and all.

Gail Suttles

This was a great experience. I took my five year old granddaughter to the back to school event. She was amazed to learn about the Spanish and Indians living together. She got to help one of the workers make a nail. It was a lot of fun for her. My saying was back in the day for almost everything we looked at. She wanted me to read every poster for her.

Felsy Sepulveda

Amazing spiritual place to visit

kevin howard

Went with school loads of history

Donna Justice

Very low key.

Stephen Folks

Went here on a school field trip. We had a blast. I would highly recommend.

Steven Brewer

Interesting 'living' history museum with period dressed guides that did a good job of telling the story of the area. An active dig site with FSU students and an archeology department interpreted results behind glass.

jasmine turner

Great museum. Be sure to have hat and sunglasses.

Howard Leban

This place is great for catered events and other large gatherings. The atmosphere is authentic and historical, service is excellent.

Jose Kropp

Beautiful place and the people acting out the characters of the time were very enthusiastic and helpful! Just be wary that the heat is torture in the summer and there are only two spots with air conditioning.

L P

Great experience! Peaceful place and even the blacksmith fired up real iron!

Emma DiAnna

My mom and i went to the "Native American" winter solstice festival and we were soooooo disappointed ... barely any Native Americans there. There were seriously more Mormons volunteering than there were Native Americans. ... so not much of a cultural event.

Whitney McGinniss

This archaeological site / natural history museum has come a long way since the visits I remember as a child. They continue to rebuild the old buildings around the mission, furnishing them with period tools, furniture, and other artifacts. The last time we went they had added staff dressed up in period clothing acting as if they were living on the mission. Very cool addition! This is a great, interactive, entertaining way to learn about native American and Spanish history and culture. Can't wait to see what they add next. :-)

Anna Nelson

Great historical museum....not as interesting for the little one's.

Angela Dowdy

Learned pine needle basket weaving

Sam J

It's a beautiful and big venue outside and inside, my friend/co-worker held her Wedding there. The staff was also pleasant.

Marian L

A little treasure right in the midst of town. A great display of area history. The Winter Solstice Day was very nice. If there had been folks in the council house to talk about the exhibit (s), I'd rated a 5.

Fran Poppell

Wonderful learning experience for all ages; served as a field trip for homeschoolers.

Collin Creates

Nice little living history museum. Kids even got to help the blacksmith!

Kierra

Beautiful park

Skye Meadows Jenkins

We stopped here on a whim on the way back from the beach, and I’m so glad we did! It was a great break in the drive that we could all enjoy, even my 10 year old black lab! They are SO dog friendly. Dogs are allowed inside and out, and the staff offered my dog water in almost every building- it was a hot day! The blacksmith even made a makeshift water bowl for my old dog with his pocket knife and a gatorade bottle. My son loved it, too. The history is really fascinating. It is actually an outdoor museum, and it is a beautiful place to walk around. There are flower gardens with sunflowers and zinnias. They are growing aloe vera plants and squash. The staff was amazing. Everyone was very kind and friendly. The soldiers in the fort were very knowledgeable and chatted with us about the fort’s history for at least twenty minutes. Fascinating history- a very well kept park with excellent staff. We’ll be back!!! I highly recommend it. We had a great time and learned a lot.

A small indoor museum, but the best part is the outdoor walkways and buildings with period (1700's) actors to tell you about the buildings and answer questions.

Interesting historic site, but really much to see.
