This Museum corresponds to the category of Natural history museum.
The indoor play area is really nice. Exhibits are nice. You need to bring $ to donate. The baby play area isn't really safe since larger kids run through it and the parents don't care enough to stop them. That's my only complaint.
Free and child friendly. I did pay for the butterfly exhibit, which is small but lovely. There is an area for kids which is extremely interactive and while geared for the 5-12 year old crowd, there is some toddler activities too. There is also a great family bathroom with a child sized toilet and a nursing room.
If you live locally, it is worth getting a museum membership. A great place to explore with kids.
Fun and educational for both kids and adults. You have to pay for parking but no fee for entrance. There are extra things to visit that do cost. The gift shops are priced reasonably. Definitely worth visiting!!
The museum is always a special treat when visiting Gainesville.
Wonderful exhibits! A little something for everybody, awesome discovery area for kids. We will go again when we have more time to spend there! (2 hrs was not enough time)
Amazing!!! Wonderful several hours of wandering and being WOW'd!! Each section and exhibit is well laid out, explained and the interactive areas are truly fantastic! The Butterfly Garden is gorgeous, peaceful and loaded with species of floral
Great museum. Fossils are well displayed. Giant prehistoric animals skeletons are wonderful. A lot to learn and study on the Calusa indigenous people which was a great exhibit. Lots to read with several audio visual presentations. …
This museum is free! I learned things I never knew about Florida and I grew up here. Pay for the Butterfly Rain Forest. It's an amazing experience.
Went while they had the Croc exhibit, got to see a bunch of baby alligators! Well worth it, especially with the Florida resident discount.
Great stop on road trips! Amazing for kids and adults. Even if you do not pay for exhibits, there is still plenty to see and do. Just a donation to enter. Worth finding, along with Sweetwater wetlands park. Only $5 per car and easy trails, stroller friendly, lots of animals. Watch out for those gators on the path!
Wonderful museum of natural history! Free except for the butterfly habitat. Stormy day so couldn't go in there. The museum is informative and shows the historical timeline of natural development in Florida. Very interesting. Give yourself at least 2 hours.
Definitely a great place for a family and the butterfly exhibit is well worth the money.
Love this place. You have to check the butterfly sanctuary while you are there. Staff are always pleasant and helpful.
Enjoy the beauty of the past and present and how we are being blessed with the future of science
Super cool museum . Lots for kids to see and discover. Museum had to no cost to get in , but there was a fee for the butterfly and alligator exhibit .
My daughter really likes this place, there are a lot of things to discover !
Great place and informative for kids and adults on local and international wildlife and natural history. Only thing is some of the displays are out of date as they were correct at one time. For example, terrors birds (still carnivores there) are now considered nut eating birds as their beaks are similar to many species of parrot.
We hadn't visited Gainesville in a while and it had been a number of years since we had been to the museum. We are both from Florida and attended UF and have memory of it from many years ago. We were very impressed with the number and quality of the exhibits. Our kids ranging in age 9 to 16 loved it also.
Went as a 3rd grade field trip and loved it. The guides were very helpful and knowledgable. Especially enjoyed the Butterfly Rainforest and being able to see scientists at work. Would love to go back when not on a time limit. I have 4 kids aged 11-6mo and there is something for all ages.
Has frequent good displays. A T-rex skeleton arrived a few years ago, as well as a whole exhibit on poison. Very educational. Great to visit. Can't remember anything about prices other than it being free for UF students.
Very well done museum. Great Florida history exhibits, hands on kids section, and the butterfly garden is always impressive.
Awesome place to spend some quality time with family. Best thing is its free and maintained very well.
alot of open walls w ith nothing
Our favorite museum by far! Amazing selection of collections, permanent and temporary! The events are always a joyous and very educational. The staff is always in good spirits. I often find excuses to drive down from Jacksonville and enjoy myself here.
Butterflies were beautiful and lots of Florida history.
This place was way bigger then I expected! You can’t beat the value of entry and it was a Day well spent! We can’t wait to go back!
Such an interesting place to visit. So much history of Florida. Occasionally they have special exhibits and of course the butterfly exhibit. That museum itself asks only for a donation to visit, usually an entrance fee for special exhibits. A very nice children's area with exhibits also. Only drawback is parking, during the week you must be careful where you park because it will require a pass or sticker. Museum parking is metered. On the wknd we visited the meters were off maybe that is every wknd, not sure and there is no postings stating that. I'm not sure either about the decal parking, maybe on the wknd that's not enforced either but did not see any info or postings on that. Maybe a phone call would be in order to determine parking requirements. Good luck and enjoy your visit
Loved it! 2 museums close together. The butterfly garden was so pretty. Great for a family day.
Great museum for all ages. Large animal fossil displays are are amazing. The parts for history of the local indigenous people were also very well done. And all of the permanent exhibits are free. Good accessibility and availability of loaner wheel chairs.
Very kid friendly place...fascinating history there.
Excellent place to go. Awesome time with my grandsons.
little bit boring, im gonna be honest
It was fabulous! One small observation, though: The Florida's Future mural has no dark-skinned person. I found that puzzling. But it was a great visit.
An amazing place to take kids of all ages lots of fun things to see and touch!!! Probably the coolest museum on earth. Museum is kept super clean and neat! Awesome that you can take you family for free. We spent hours in the kids area and they loved every moment.
We really enjoyed our visit. The exhibits were quite detailed and very well done
A great diversion for the whole family. The butterfly atrium is amazing. The augmented reality foyer is a treat for the kids. The fossil collection walk in extremely enlightening.( I didn't know how "Giant" a giant ground sloth was. The Native Tribes of Florida exhibit is a must see. AND that's just part of it, don't forget to check out the Nature trails. Definitely worth the time and little bit of money.
The rainforest butterfly exhibit was beautiful! The museum is packed with great exhibits. We really enjoyed it!
This really is a hidden gem! Really great exhibits with a strong connection to Florida, plus one of the largest collections of butterflies and moths. Always worth a visit if you've got time, and especially so if you're a UF student!
There are lots of interesting things to see. A great kids experience.
This place rocks! Make sure to attend the butterfly release. Very informative. We spent all day touring the museum. There is a good restaurant next door at the art museum. A little pricey, but it worked out because we did not have to leave.
This place was fun for the kids and adults.
Such a great museum! The kids area is fantastic!! The butterfly exhibit is a must see, so beautiful! Go when it's warm and not raining and you'll see hundreds of butterflies.
Beatiful place. Excelent collection. Wonderful butterfly rainforest
What a great place to visit! So many things to see!
take your kids, they will enjoy. This is for Kids. No ticket if you want to see the exhibits and other stuff, buy ticket if you want to see the butterfly garden. The exhibits are good. Great for Children.
Such an amazing and beautiful place. Staff are friendly and will answer any questions. The exhibits were very nice. Butterfly garden was very full and vibrant. If you have a few hours to have fun and learn about history this is your place to come.
Great free museum with an awesome kids area
Fun for all ages. You can have a new experience each time you come to explore. There are changing exhibits as well as permanent installation. Hidden treasures in unexpected places are fun for children and adults to explore. Access is easy for all levels of mobility.
This place was amazing! The permian monster exhibit was awesome and my kids loved the discovery zone.
It was a great museum ! Very impressive
Love this museum! It seems like I discover something new each time I go. You can visit the butterfly exhibit and special exhibit for a fee but the rest of the museum is free to visit. Their section on prehistoric Florida is amazing! Children and adults will enjoy their visit here. Make sure you check out the megaladon shark jaws! They're a must-see.
We loved this place!! Bathrooms are clean. The artwork is awesome. Everything looks lifelike! So much info you have to visit more than once.
I love it because it teach you what happen before
Great place to browse and enjoy. I went there for the annual "collectors' Day" and was astounded at how many collectors came to exhibit. Interesting on so many levels. The regular displays are educational and interesting.
Always enjoy visiting the museum Wonderful learning for adults, and children alike
It really was enchanting! We visited the museum as a birthday outing for my mom, specifically the Butterfly Rainforest. I've been going to this museum since I was very young. Just coming back to town, it was only natural for me to seek out familiar activities. They did not disappoint. The staff, every single member we encountered, were extremely pleasant and helpful. The exhibits are magnanimous, and I love the digi tech screen in the lobby. Very pleased with this outing. Entrance fees vary according to age.
Nice selection of exhibits, definitely aimes towards families/children, but still educational
Very informative and friendly staff. The butterfly exhibit is wonderful.
Fun reminder of what Florida is and has been. My kids and I always love exploring these local halls of history.
Awesome experience for my 2, 4 and 8 year olds. If you are short on time, just do the free museum parts and skip the butterflies and crocodiles. Our kids could have stayed in the Discovery part all day.
The museum really has something for everyone. There is a charge to enter The butterfly museum Which in our opinion was well worth it. There is a great section on the history of Florida, another section on historic animals and sea-life. There was plenty of exhibits and it’s not a museum that you can rush through and really enjoy all that it has to offer.
Fun and educational displays for children and families. Everything from wooly mammoths to sea creatures, Native Americans to amazing butterflies! Check out the great cave, and let kids play and learn in the Discovery Zone.
The alligator exhibition was super cool! Also, it will be a good adition to include a top cover in the Butterfly Forest so it will still be functional during rain.
Very cool place. Lots to see and learn. Loved the prehistoric exhibits.
I love this place! Even if you go multiple times, it's still very educational.
4 stars because the outdoors butterfly garden area needs help. It needs watering and probably a lot of maintenance. Everything looked dead. But indoors....everything was wonderful. I paid for the dinosaurs and butterfly rainforest but everything else was free. If you're limited on funds the free exhibits are worth the stop. Especially with kids. My 6 year old loved the place.
It was so much fun! The official natural history museum in florida. We went there for a 3 year old birthday and it was fun for the whole family. They have multiple butterfly releases per day and have a butterfly atrium area where they fly all around you. Definitely a cool experience even on a cold day.
Fantastic. The Butterfly House defies description. The museum has something for everyone, adults to toddlers. There is a charge for the Butterfly House, but the rest of the museum is free. I would have happily paid to go to the museum - it's that good.
Really enjoyed this stop on our trip. Will be back when we have more time
Permanent exhibits are free, and it's no small thing, all kinds of fossils, a kids area, lots of cultural artifacts from indigenous and historical people of Florida, etc. And a lovely gift shop. Well worth a visit.
A well kept museum nice displays butterfly area was great . Grandchildren had a good time
Awesome natural history museum. Great interactive exhibits for kids and great for all ages. Free, but donations encouraged.
Very nice museum to take the kids to. Just enough things for them to explore, but small enough that it is finished before they get bored. The butterfly exhibit was fantastic. Being able to walk around with so many butterflies flying around you is fantastic. Being in an enclosure with all the plants made it a wonderful experience. Fun to walk through and take pictures. The inside with the views of the working labs where they are raising more butterflies was neat to look at. The rotating section when we went had an alligator exhibit. It was ok. Not a lot to see there for how much it cost. If we were to do it over we would've skipped that section.
It’s an amazing place to go to if you want to see beautiful butterflies and fossils that belonged to amazing animals.
Neat, neat place!! We went for the movie/reception event. Wish we could have spent the day there! So many great exhibitions - love that it's dedicated to Florida. Worth the time & investment! Can't wait to get to go back again!
What a great treasure! The kid Discovery Zone is AWESOME! We stop on our way to visit Grandma for a much needed break. Even the two year old has a blast. We had a hard time getting him out!
We were in Gainesville for a medical procedure, and needed something to kill time. We decided to check out the Florida Museum. My 14 year old daughter really enjoyed the butterfly garden, and the other displays and exhibits we're interesting and educational. There are Native American exhibits, fossils, and a hands-on area for kids.
We really enjoyed the butterfly museum!
Loved it. Need to go back to catch a few other things. Perhaps a show!
We stopped here to stretch our legs on a road trip from Miami to Alabama. I expected to maybe spent 1 hour and be on our way. My 8 year old and I had such a blast, we didn't want to leave. We ended up staying 2 hours and loved every minute of it. Our favorite part was the butterfly exhibit. We got to see so many beautiful butterflies, up close. And they even had a place where you could see the chrysalis' hatching into butterflies. They also give a Florida resident discount.
1st time here. The butterfly exhibit is absolutely beautiful. Will be going back very soon.
My two year old litterally asks me to go to the "museum" every day. She loves the discovery zone and wandering through all the exhibits! And the majority of it is free! Can't gett any better than that (:
I love this place because I saw beautiful things
The kids enjoy this museum so it's a good place to go when it is too hot to play outdoors. The butterflies are lovely and I love that they have permanent exhibits as well as a rotating exhibit. Members often have opportunities for special events (like the upcoming croc exhibit opening reception). That being said, if you aren't a member, most of the exhibits, including the kid play area, are free! You do have to pay for entry into the butterfly rainforest if you aren't a member.
I actually had a good time! Alot of information and visuals for kids and adults.
We celebrate my granddaughter's annual angelversary here, which is 2 hours from home because we like it so much! More education than just about butterflies, but the garden is a beautiful spot for photo ops with family or close ups of butterflies, turtles and beautiful fish! Also an on- site lab that you can watch the stages of growth and lab workers as they work. Some very cool exhibits. My favorites are the Seminole Indian mannequins that are so life like! You swear their alive and follow you with the eyes! Not scary, just amazing! The other is the display of ancient sharks' mouth and tooth size compared to those that evolved from then to present day. Awesome!
This place was amazing. My kids really enjoyed it
Our family loves this museum! We like to bring guests from out of town here to play and explore. The children’s area is a great place for little ones to play while the gift shop is neat for the big kids.
It was beautiful. Love the butterfly exhibit
Great way to spend an afternoon with your family. The docents are very knowledgeable and helpful.
This is my first time visiting and I am blown away by the attention to detail and the exhibit variety that the FLMNH has to offer. General admission is free for all but two exhibits (butterfly rainforest and crocs), and the other two are free to all UF students. The only issue that I had was that it was relatively easy to get turned around, so keep that in mind. I did not visit crocs, but I did visit the butterfly rainforest and the other exhibits and I was surprised by the quality of them. There are plenty of opportunities for children (although some exhibits with darker lighting may frighten some) to enjoy nature and its ties to Florida history, but this is far from just being a museum for children. The explanations of things like mangroves, barrier islands, and the fossil history of Florida taught me things that I didn't know, even though I have lived on a barrier island in Florida for 17 years. This is a great reminder for everyone, big and small, of how precious natural resources are. My only complaint is that it is easy to get turned around, but it is perfect other than that.
Beautiful place and lots to do and see. Spend the money and go thru the butterfly garden. Beautiful plant and butterfly specimens.
Great place. Really informative. And it's free to go in.
We love it here. It's discovery center is so much fun and never gets old. The staff is pretty nice. We love our membership.
Honestly, there should be an entrance fee for the amount of stuff that you get to see. With the care given to the exhibits there is no reason that they shouldn't charge. It is a great place for family's as well as adults without kids. Looking at the website and some of the photos I thought it might have been more geared towards younger kids, but it was great for all ages. If you have a free day and are looking for something to pass the time, this would be a great option.
I loved it! Very interesting and beautiful. It's a nice way to learn about Florida's history without having to read a boring book
This place is amazing ! I had no idea We( Florida ) had such a fantastic museum . It is so worth the trip ,from wherever .My only complaint was we ran out of time .
We've been coming here for years and we never get tired of it! Great for the whole family. Meticulously maintained, clean and well organized. The staff is so friendly and knowledgeable. Great prices in the gift shop. Do yourself a favor and go visit!!
One of the BEST indoor musumes I've been to. It's free and right on campus (but parking has never been a problem). Super awesome kids 'hands on' area and amazing exhibits that walk you thru what a cave is like, a whole room for skeletal remains up showing what type of animal it was and how far back the bones are dated. Butterfly part does cost a little (but free for UF students). Can easily spend 2-3 hours. My 6yr old and 3yr old both love it everytime we visit.
It has interesting but true facts about Native Americans&manicans they use actually reflect the true color of a Native American;also you can find alot of interesting facts about Native Wildlife&their habitat not only the ones that are still living today but also the ones that are now extinct!
Love this place. Very good place for kids of all ages!!!
I have gone to this museum countless times..as a kid, as a volunteer, solo, with family, etc. Its a great, FREE place to bring your kids when the weather is not great and they need to have some fun. The exhibits you have to pay to get in are always good, but probably not worth it if you have younger kids. They'll enjoy the free exhibits.
This place is a hidden gem. There is so much to see and learn about. It's unreal how big it is. The butterfly rainforest was amazing. Just all around great experience!
Great time, lot of pictures, grandson loved it 4years old lots for him to do,just great
It's a great little museum. The butterfly garden is really awesome. It was very peaceful and was a nice little break from the hustle and bustle of campus life. I feel like I have to move really slow when walking through there so as not to crush one of the butterflies because they are everywhere and land everywhere. I really want to take my son back here. There are a lot of things for kids and adults. Great location right there on the University of Florida campus. We will be back for sure.
Really enjoyed going through there, very interesting, nice place.
Was a nice place but the cost of butterfly habitat is very high for a small area. Might not be a place for young children as my 5 year old got bored quickly.
Love this place. Best Museum we have ever been too. Butterflies were beautiful.
$12 for students for the butterfly exhibit - which is absolutely amazing. Make sure you give yourself plenty of time to explore the whole place, and listen to the instructions before entering the butterfly room.
We enjoyed our day lots of knowledgeable people to help you with any questions you might have and the exhibits were wonderful
Fantastic Adventure..Family Friendly,Alot to do with the kids! See the Butterfly Rainforest while your here! A full Day trip ☺️Kids loved Discovery Zone in the Museum!
Had a wonderful experience here. I love butterflies and to have them flying all around you is amazing. Learned there are some that eat bananas was a bonus.
This museum is by far the best an most fun educational outing I've ever been too , if your not in touch or have no clue about Florida an it's history , or knowledge of dinosaurs an that time line , this has to be a must see an must do if your in gainsville or around the area.
Showcasing prehistory, natural and cultural history of the Sunshine State, this place is a model for what every smaller-sized museum (with an emphasis on nature and science, for sure) should be. With its locally focused and very well curated exhibitions being the main draw (I didn't visit the Butterfly Rainforest), the museum is complete with a natural light-filled central gallery for gathering, resting and discussion, lots of interactive features, and labs at work. The visually stunning Wall of Wings makes great use of its extensive Lepidoptera collection. Decent children's zone and gift shops, too, plus a garden and a cafe nearby. I really can't believe that all this museum's permanent exhibitions are free. Last but not least, thumbs up for the practice of recycling gallery maps. Curators and staff, thank you for such an educational and pleasant museum experience, and please keep up the good work.
Wonderful way to spend a Sunday afternoon. Walked away with new found knowledge of things and people native to Florida. Things that I sure most don't know anything about. Free admission (donations accepted) was a big plus. Paid a little extra to take in the Butterfly Exhibit and earned my wings. Lovely time had by all. Well worth it.
This place is amazing for all ages! You don’t have to pay to get in but you do have to pay if you want to see the butterflies or the other exhibit. The kids play area is free which is why we love coming here. The kids can roam around and play with everything and I don’t have to worry about where they are. I brought my neighbors grandson, he has a very short attention span, and he loved everything!
We LOVE the museum! We are on our 3 Rd year of buying member passes! It's good for over 300 museums around the world! Plus a discount at the gift shop! We love all the new exhibits that come through and attended our first members reception and it was amazing! I recommend the member passes to all my friends and family!
Open to the public. Special exhibits low cost, discounted for Florida residents and University students. All University decal parking in garage and surrounding lot. Smaller metered visitor lot. Fun children section for the kiddos.
Beautiful and educational displays had a fun day with my family.
Truly an adventure for the eyes and mind. So much to see and do. The butterfly area is so astounding.
Great great great... Interesting. Butterflies beautiful
We have been at the museum and butterfly rain forest years ago, but today we saw many more specimens. The gardens were impeccable, also. It was gorgeous. A must visit to all ages.
simply amazing place, various environments to visit, know a little of the history of the country, and know various species of animals and their habitats. Awesome, I recommend everyone to visit the Museum.
We love visiting this museum. Great exhibits, tons of hands on activities, educational for adults and children alike, and a gift shop where everything is not overpriced. We'll continue to visit! They have a small cafe (not open on Mondays) and several picnic areas to enjoy your own lunch as well.
We took the Grandchildren who are hung up with dinosaurs
Loved the butterfly exhibit! They had a kid zone for little ones. All exhibits are not included in general admission.
I love this place! Its a good place to take the kids during the summer months when its too hot for the park. Addmission is free and parking is free on the weekends.
Really enjoyed this place with my kids. Well designed and hands-on.
Beautiful museum. Amazing pieces of history, awe-inspiring for the children and incredible architecture. If you are considering going here, I could not recommend it more. Great for the whole family.
This museum has well-designed exhibits that are diverse, so everyone can find something they like there, from dinosaurs to shells and butterflies. We just volunteered on the Montbrook dig, so it was great to see the exhibit detailing the finds there. This museum is not isolated from current field work. Very exciting! We will be back. Give yourself plenty of time here. At least 3 hours.
My daughter and I loved our first experience with this museum. We are already planning on our next trip.
Must see butterfly garden! Great natural museum
A great place to stop and stretch your legs and your mind if you are on I-75 near Gainsville, FL. The museum offers at least a 2 hour diversion if you walk through it quickly. There are plenty of details on the local flora and fauna of …
Had a great time showing my son around. He loved being able to interact with exhibits.
Great place for kids to learn and play. Keep in mind the kids play area closes 1/2 hour before the museum does.
Fun and interesting. Not very big, but the butterflies are worth seeing.
Loved it. Great family getaway
It was a pleasant time. Our kindergarten class went on a field trip. Nice exhibits. Personal seemed knowledgeable. Clean environment.
Wonderful way to spend an hour or 2, free options and small fee if you want to see the butterfly garden.
Amazing place...the dinosaurs exhibit was very interesting; made you feel like you were in that time. The same with the underwater exhibit, Indian exhibits, and the coolest interactive big screen that brings on a saber tooth and mammoth as if they're walking right next to you. This place is free which is nice so I'll be going back soon because I didn't even get a chance to tour the whole thing.
It was great and loved every thing in it!!
The best place to visit in Gainesville. Take the children, they will love it
Kids have a blast and adults can find plenty of amazing displays. One of my favorite places to visit, especially with the family. Highly recommended place to see.
Every time it is such a nice pleasant visit for kids. Very educational.
Amazing experience being that both parking and entry is FREE. For a few more dollars you can visit the butterfly area or a specialized area.
Wonderful museum. It is way bigger than it appears from the outside. Interactive and immersive exhibits. We go for the home school days and they do a fantastic job setting up the special exhibit area. Our favorite was the Wicked Plants tour! It was like stepping into another world.
Awesome place to spend a couple hours, 6 and 10 year old grandchildren loved it
