Our visit started with a video explaining who John Dickerson was and his influence on American history. After a short walk up to the house, we had an amazing tour. Our tour guide just loves his job and it really showed. He greeted us on the front steps in period costume and showed us though the house explaining the Dickerson family history and talking about all the people that lived there. He took time to answer everyone's questions and even took extra time with our tour because it was not too busy. A lovely experience! A very important part of the history of Delaware and the United States. And it was totally free!

This is a must-see if in Dover. You are greeted by staff wearing period pieces then shown an informative video before walking over to the mansion. The tour guide is waiting to greet you by the home. Each room had its purpose and our guide was a wealth of information. We made sure to give a donation to help preserve this treasure.

Benjamin Grim

Excellent place to view the history of years gone by. Was a good presentation. The grounds are interesting. Well worth it!

On this site can be seen the main John Dickinson house as well as other buildings where slaves lived. You leave here with a wealth of knowledge about early Delaware history and the wider history during the formative years of the country. The tour guides are very knowledgeable. Plan to spend 2 hours here.

Vitali Hostiuk

Immerse in Delaware and American history while visiting this well preserved plantation. The whole visit with the house tour doesn't take more than an hour and a half. Definitely watch the video in the barn.

Lynn Wilkins

I grew up in Delaware but had never been here for a tour. It was an awesome tour. The tour guides were terrific especially young Tyler.

Karen VanderWaal

This place was nice. The grounds were beautiful and the interior was very cool. The tour guide wasn't the best, but overall it was a nice visit. It's free, so they work with donations. If they charged admission, they would be able to afford to do a better presentation to visitors. So don't expect to get the same experience as Monticello or Mt Vernon.

The guides were very knowledgeable and wonderful. However i wish they would recomend an age that children should be to enjoy things like this. The children were very behaved but pretty much board to death.

Frederick Tate

A piece of history you can touch. Step back in time minutes away from Dover Air Force Base. One of my favorite spots in Delaware!

Although the thought of a plantation as a historic site is uncomfortable, it is important to see what life was like during the period and the way the owners and slaves lived to encourage us to never move backwards on our way to equality.

Gray Hare

A great place for a visit if you love history. However, I would loved to have seen more. I guess I expected a larger site. The staff was excellent. Friendly and knowledgeable. My wife and I received a private tour which was really cool. This place really loves visitors and loves to share the unique history of this founding father with visitors.

Fascinating history and amazing views. Knowledgeable tour guides in the house, and there was even a cook in the kitchen baking gingerbread - all in period dress. Absolutely worth a visit!

I feel like the one older tour guide lady was getting annoyed with students that had alot of questions.

For critics of "No plantation should be a tourist site" didn't bother to find out that DICKINSON FREED HIS SLAVES while alive. For those former slaves who stayed, Dickinson housed and employed them. He fought the culture he was born into and corrected his behavior! He should be honored. Historic site worth seeing!

Bruce Young

Clarissa Ward

Great house of history and culture

Glenn Pupino

Excellent! Staff was outstanding! Great displays. Very informative!

A nice Colonial era home to explore on the way to the Delaware beaches. The movie was interesting, yet long, describing John Dickinson's life and passions. The tour of the home was especially interesting and thorough. The tour guide answered all questions with a breadth of knowledge. Grounds and house are particularly photogenic.

My cousin was visiting from England and was intrigued by a tourist attraction that was a plantation. I had to agree, the word made me uncomfortable. So we visited and took the tour. I am so pleased we did, the tour guides were wonderful. They gave a great presentation and I am glad this group preserved this living memorial to our past.

Excellent experience. Would recommend it to everyone. Our tour guide Chris was very knowledgeable, friendly and had excellent "people skills". An interesting and enjoyable experience!

Jon Sund

An interesting place to visit, but I would not make a special trip to Dover for a visit. The property is well cared for with beautiful lawns and well maintained buildings. There is a lot to be learned about John Dickinson who many of us do not realize his impact on the creation of the United States. We were there in early August after many days of rain so to truly enjoy the grounds insect repellant was needed.

Ariele Boudreau

Ellen R

A wonderful step back in history, complete with period dressed interpreters who will guide the visitor through life on the plantation.

Excellent historic location. Very convenient location. Definitely worth an hour. Some of the grounds are overgrown and delapadated but everything that's actually historic is super well preserved. They do a good job dealing with the uncomfortable bits of the history, and overall, it's just a great place to visit

JC Lee

Learned a lot about slavery and how plantations operated. And how people lived then.

Bob Hartman

Scenic area and a nice trail nearby. Staff were very good.
