Had an absolutely awesome time here. The guides and staff are so knowledgeable and friendly. This is the site of the first DuPont powderworks, and includes factory and residential pieces. The mansion and gardens are beautiful. The workshops, which still have working steam and river powered lathes, drills and other equipment were fascinating. Great piece of history.

My husband and I had so much fun coming to this park! It was $15 for admission, and there is a bus that will take you from site to site although you can easily walk the first half of it. We were initially let down because we thought it was going to be more of an arboretum/garden/free roaming place like the Nemours Estate (IF YOU HAVE NOT BEEN TO THE NEMOURS ESTATE, YOU HAVE TO GO!!!) but it was more like a limited guided tour. Having said that, it was a lot of fun and the staff is so hands on that we learned more about the history of the Du Ponts than in any of the other sites we have been to! (And we have been to several). A charming and hilarious tour guide brings you through the house, you can spend time walking the vegetable gardens and learning more about the land, the bus brings you back to the path where you can walk and explore a little bit of the surrounding land, you get to see how they used to utilize steam and the waterwheel, they fire a mini canon (this was super fun to see), and there is a gunpowder demonstration. You can also walk up to the schoolhouse and practice your quill writing skills, and you can tour an old house where the workers used to live. It was a very educational experience and we do not regret going at all! FYI you will not get cell service here, although the visitors center does have WIFI.

This was pretty boring especially for kids. As other reviews stated Guides are constantly telling kids don't do this don't do that. Even when kids are not doing anything. They seem anxious and stressed all the time... The entrance price $15 per person is also a little ridiculous we spend $60! Just to see nothing but old houses and furniture, the powder yard stop which is just walking around a creek. The steam engine also boring and not even working when we went. The easy does it was just to play with bicycle wheels and other wheels.. And try to eat before coming unless you want to spend almost $10 for a ham and cheese sandwich!!

We found out about the yearly car show here and decided to make a day trip out of it. The car show was awsome, most all makes and models had representation The local museums that displayed cars had knowledgeable people present so any questions could be answered. A local contingent of British car enthusiasts were there as well so I had an opportunity to meet new people. I only gave it four stars becouse I have to go back and go thru the actual Museum.

Good but horrible horrible place for young children. Many tour guides were quite rude about kids being there. As we went during the week when the kids portion was not available to the public. Other then that it was a beautiful place and well kept landscaping with wonderful history. We just won't go back with kids unless the kids portion was open

I was really impressed with the tours. The information was interesting and the area was pleasant to be in. Even my 11 year old son enjoyed the tour, including the tour of the mansion. There was more to do then I had realized and we will probably go back in the fall. I imagine the trees along the river will be beautiful.

$15 entrance fee allows you spend all day at this wonderful museum complex. Staff is top notch, lots to see, great exhibits with staff that knows how to narrate the story of DuPont's black powder in the US. Large spralinng facility with continuous short bus service; great walk as well if you so choose. We spent 5 hours and did not see everything. Well worth the time and small fee. You won't be disappointed. Get there early!

A wonderful place to learn about the age of water power, production of gun powder and machines in general. Can be lots of walking, although there is a small bus. If it's hot and humid, it can be miserable. The staff is friendly and helpful. Don't miss the exhibit on the first floor of the visitors' center. There is a good gift shop, a little upscale. Follow the signs carefully for the last mile or two: it's easy to miss. Go to the Hagley Museum, NOT the Hagley Library.

Such a beautiful place! Really a very inexpensive outing for the family and worth every penny. We went on a science Saturday with 2 10 year old girls and they were thoroughly entertained all afternoon. Get there early in the day so you have plenty of time to truly experience everything they have to offer.

Attended the Wednesday evening bike, hike and Brew. What a great idea! I was pleased to see how many people attended. There were lots of families and both hikers and bikers. We ordered a picnic dinner which was delicious and very reasonably priced. Beware biking the big hill! You will definitely feel a sense of accomplishment when you are done.

Staff Bikes Built Better

Went to the museum on Saturday afternoon. Wish we had gotten there in the morning! There was so much to see. Fascinating history of the DuPont family and their earliest business...gunpowder! Lots of actual working 1800's machinery demonstrations. We adults were entranced. There were also some children there and they seemed to be very interested as well. We'll have to go back again to see what we missed.

The DuPonts left the French Revolution to begin producing gun powder at the Hagley site. You can visit each stage of gun powder development. While this didn't sound very interesting to me, it turned out I was fascinated and stayed longer than planned. The site also has the DuPont mansion and worker homes to give a complete picture of what happened at Hagley.

A must see! A hidden gem in DE. Coming from Baltimore we had never heard of this site. It turned out to be a museum as well as a working water wheel power 'plant' situated on the beautiful Brandywine river. It was owned by the Dupont family. It has a functioning steam engine as well. It's worth the trip just to take a walk along the river. If you're at all interested in history or if you aren't this is a good place to start ;)

Awesome place we loved it there we spent five hours there and we saw everything there are three different tours two on the hour and one on the half hour one of the tours on the hour takes you an hour they also have a lot of cool dioramas some of them move they have a cafe there that serves good food you also get to look at the old buildings and if you get tired of walking they have a bus.

Very friendly staff and tour guides. Everyone of them. They call themselves DuPonters, as do all who work for the DuPont company I am told. All who worked there were very enthusiastic about the DuPont family and what they have done for this country. I would say that their narrative was a little slanted to only see the good, but isn’t that the way of all tour guides? Just take it with a grain of salt when you go and use logic and reasoning. Such as when they tell you that the DuPont’s “educated” all of the poor children of their workers to the point they could read. This meant they were taught during Sunday School for one hour each week. As a first grade teacher I know the children would not have had enough educational time to learn how to read at this rate. I discussed this with my guide but it was insisted that everyone learned to read because of the DuPont’s. I found this delusional. They also refused to broach the topic of slavery or what the DuPont’s did in the later years (think Agent Orange). However, it was very interesting to see the old mills, how they created the first gun powder, how they chose their location, and how everything worked. This would not be the top of my list for places to visit. But if you have a couple of hours and want to learn a little bit of history it would be worth it.

Amazing place for the scientifically minded! If you have any interest in chemistry you'll love the place. The gunpowder mills, the water-powered systems, and the museum on the history of the DuPont company (much of which involves polymers) are first-rate.

Very interesting museum. I arrived late so I could not tour the entire property which consists of several buildings: working 19th century mill, stationary period steam engine, home of I.E. Du Pont, school house and a few others. The main building was very informative and had several interactive diaramas, a few pieces from the Du Pont family very well preserved and some very interesting information about the formation of their company. The property is very beautiful as well and the staff was very nice and well informed. Tickets only $15 for adults. Be sure to give yourself at least 3-3.5 hours to tour the property and keep in mind they close at 5pm.

Our visit to the Hagley Museum put us in the middle of gunpowder history. In 1802 Dupont he sited and began building the mill along the Brandywine River near Wilmington. Brandywine River Powder Mills produced its first gunpowder in 1803. Started as a large-scale, sophisticated manufactory, Brandywine maintained operations for 119 years. The Brandywine River Powder Mills performed shell loading and some smokeless nitrations during World War I. On this property there are 8 rolling mills water wheel & water turbine in different degrees of decay. Brandywine Creek on one side and a man-made water sloth on the other side of the mills kept the powder yard safe from the risk of explosion.

The museum was fascinating. It goes into how the DuPonts started to make their fortune. You can tour their first house which is nice but nothing like the later mansions in grandiosity. The really interesting part is the mill. They made black powder for guns and cannons etc. Great exhibits and explanations. Also, live demonstrations of a metal working shop, and tours of the mill buildings.

The lady that does the tour of the bedroom upstairs needs to learn how to deal with children. She seemed really stressed out and constantly saying don't do this and don't do that. I don't recommend this place for young children especially those with behavior issues. The parking for buses is a hike and a half and it was freezing cold outside. The school house teacher was nice and so was the gentleman who does the cookies.

Hayley museum and mills is the site of Henry DuPont's first business created in the late 1800s ; a black powder mill used to create gun powder for the Civil War.The tour is very informative with docents walking you through the entire process that DuPont created in his original mill. A caution for anyone with any mobility problems; you need to be able to walk through a lot of uneven terrain ( as someone with a cane, I found it rather difficult). A tour of DuPont's first home and gardens is also included. If you are into early American history, you will enjoy this tour. The tour guides are very knowledgeable and fun.

This was my first visit, there is lots of historical structures left to see. The grounds are extensive, and its along the Brandywine River, so its nice for a hike too. I enjoyed the mansion tour and had a nice lunch at the cafe. There's not a lot of food places close by (I saw none on the way in), so pack a lunch if you are making a day of it, but I enjoyed the cafe. I ended up spending almost 6 hours here, taking pictures, and a leisurely self guided tour. The little buses take you around the site, if you wish. Its not really a place for young children, but I would say 7 and up would enjoy it. Its also a great place for couples, I saw they have picnic dinners for 2 on select days in the summer and would make a romantic date. I came on a weekday, so after the school groups left in the morning, I had the place mostly to myself. I definitely want to come back! Update: I came back for a Christmas tour, and it was worth the 2nd trip, I saw and learned things I hadn't on my 1st visit, and everyone is so friendly! I plan on a spring visit. Hagley is great in any season!

Very interesting. The photo of the turbine driven by the water was incorrectly attributed to the adjacent state park. Lots of history here. The flower and vegetable garden is being returned to its historical origins. Very peaceful and the trees are wonderful.

From the moment we walked in the visitor center until we left, we had an awesome experience. Since it was a chance of rain all day, I believe that kept most people away and that was okay with us. We were the only ones on the van with the very well educated driver who personalized the tour as we went along the route. Then we got to the house and was again given one on one service with the tour guide who really knew her info too. We ended with the guided tour of the Roll Mill, a must for the history in it's self. Our tour guide was even generous to do it all in the rain so we could fully experience the whole tour. I highly recommend visiting the Hagley Museum!

I've been here 3 times, always with different members of the family, it's the beginning history of the Dupont family. Nice museum, there is a nice little cafe that serves organic style lunches, nothing fancy. Places is very nice, museum was established in the early 1950's and improvements have come along over time, many volunteers support the museum. I like the museum, the displays of the steam engine, the repair shop, and the main museum, at the front. You may not have enough time to make it a day, it's that big. The grounds are excellent. It competes with many other excellent nearby attractions. Good for the older generation. Being here 3 times, I don't mind coming back.
