I visited Yale university Art gallery couple of months back with my friends. This was one place which instigated my interest in the Art galleries. There are some classic paintings are here. Apart from that you can get closer to African and Asian art. If you have decent knowledge about art then you can spend days here without even noticing. Must visit!
Are you in need of a little art, culture, and history? Well you will not be disappointed with this museum. It houses a lovely range of art and artifacts that should not be missed. The museum is in a great location with beautiful architecture everywhere. Parking was easy, there are tables outside where you can hangout with a meal, coffee, or ice cream from a nearby shop. When friends visit from out of town I will suggest a visit.
Best art gallery you could go to. Easily beats famous New York, French, Italian, and all other galleries in both collection and atmosphere. The Yale gallery has one of, if not the definitive, best collections of art in the world. Don’t miss great collections of some of the most famous artists of their time, with works ranging from antiquity to modern. Despite this storied collection, the gallery is not crowded, the staff are incredibly kind, helpful, and knowledgeable. Not to mention the gallery is 100% FREE to anyone! Make sure to stop by the Trumbull gallery on the second floor and his grave on the first to thank him for his legacy requiring free admission to this amazing collection.
Absolutely wonderful experience here! So much to see and learn. Amazing artifacts and visitor friendly displays with descriptions. Beautiful place to visit!
Beautiful art and they have a Basquiat!!
Great and varies collection
I compare Yale to a dragon atop a vast hoard of art treasures of unimaginable worth. I go often and the exhibits change frequently. It’s a wonderful place to go soak up the art.
Beautiful! I am not an art expert, but when you see a Van Gogh, Monet, Gauguin from so close that you can see the masters brush strokes, laid down so long ago and the colors unfiltered by reproduction or even a piece of glass, you can’t help but be amazed. Make a contribution if you have it, or the place is free if you don’t .. wonderful, awesome gift.
Awesome free museum that explores a wide range of art history. Beautiful building, but the guards will get mad at you for dancing excitedly in the elevator.
Free knowledge transfer at the various museum
Great place to look at art, very cool modern art and impressionist section!
Buildings are beautiful. Nice and clean campus. Great for research. Not much distractions.
Amazing art, interesting information.
For those interested in the art genre this is the place to go. It is a very big place with so much to see up to four floors and even an outdoor exhibit. Yes it is totally free as well. You can choose to have a tour guide with a group or you can go on your own. Everything from contemporary art to modern art.
I love this museum and it is so close to home.
Impressive collection dating back, in some cases, centuries. Like in many museums today, however, authenticity questionable!
Was greatly surprised at the veriety of items on exhibition. All were of good quality and accessible. This is a hidden gem for museum lovers. They have several unique historical pieces that cannot be seen elsewhere.
Excellent and wonderful place to know about any culture
Amazing unexpected collection. I deeply recommend the Modern Art and the European Art floors. Entrance is free and you will find a fantastically organized collection with some very important pieces from well-known artists.
Always a joy to visit. Frequent changes in done galleries.
I was not expecting paintings by the masters to be there. Van Gogh, Monet, Manet, etc. The religious art was amazing. Very impressed with gallery.
What a rare treasure! This incredible museum is free - no admission charge. I was surprised to find paintings by Renoir, Van Gogh, Picasso, Turner, Wyeth, Homer, and more. The American Crafts section was also amazing and had the most complete display of silverware I've ever seen. The Italian pavilion, built in the 1920's, is an incredibly beautiful building. This place is worth the trip, and the amazing British Museum is across the street. Great place to spend a day or two!
Great place to spend an afternoon. Parking garage two blocks away easiest way to park.$2 an hour on the weekends. Kids loved it. They have a family might with activities for small children from time to time.
Fananamable world class measum. Feels like a private place on a grand scheme. A Must visit.
This museum is one of the best in New England. It has everything including Egyptian, African, Asian, European and American art. It has an amazing collection of impressionist art including Van Gogh and Claude Monet. It has fantastic modern art including many Picasso pieces. I highly recommend this museum!
I loved my visit to the Yale art museum. We were not permitted to take in large objects such as backpacks and big purses. They do provide lockers at the entrance of the building, that with the use of a quarter you are able to access. There are gaurds on every floor, and they are more than happy to assist you with whatever needs you may have. The bathrooms were located at the entrance of the building from what i could tell. Most importantly entrance to this art gallery is free, but you are encouraged to give a small donation.
Very nice collection
Free. Exceptional art. Great tour options. Just a marvelous place to learn, relax and feel amazed
Excellent collection in a really interesting old and repurposed space. Also free! I especially enjoyed the discussion exhibition and contemporary art gallery.
My daughters and I visited for the first time and loved it. Employess were nice and helpful. The museum was clean and bright It is located in a very convenient area in downtown New Haven. Good for all imo.
Small great art work
Incredible treasure in New Haven, with an amazing permanent collection of everything from ancient to modern and great rotating shows. All for free. If you make it up to the top floor, check out the outdoor sculpture garden for some good views of New Haven.
A very nice museum. A beautiful mix of fun and interesting things to see. Find the rooftop sculpture terrace, it was great at sunset. It's free ! So feel free to make a donation !! ; )
What a wonderful surprise. The museum was SO much bigger than we expected that we have to go back to finish. From ancient sculptures to the most famous artists, it was something new at every turn. Kids enjoyed it too - highly recommend.
Always free. Always worth the visit.
Beautiful architecture nice place for pictures
This place was a true pleasure to visit and would have been, on its own, enough to make a whole trip to New Haven worthwhile. I was lost in the vast collections of historical material and truly stunning artwork and only left with a great feeling of regret for bot having stayed longer. If you are in the area, you should definitely go!
Stunning place, amazing collection, small rooms make for a more intimate connection to the pieces. Will come back!
The art gallery is beautiful and has such amazing variety and collection from so many places! The gallery itself is so beautiful and giving you a peek of the outside world now and then. The gallery is free and if you come over during the weekend, you can find free street parking too. The gallery is very well maintained and the staff are courteous. There is seating available in most of the gallery area if you want to ponder over the brilliant art works displayed here.
Wonderful. The art inside is fantastic.
We visited primarily to see the actual building/architecture but of course found ourselves enjoying and appreciating all the works of art. However, we did not find the staff very friendly. Security guards were walking around and practically standing right over us as we looked around. They did not seem approachable or friendly. Kind of put a damper on our experience. Felt a bit stifling.
Such a cool collection of artwork! And best of all, it’s free! We got there about an hour before it closed which didn’t leave much time to leisurely walk through but we managed to hit most of the highlights! Great modern art as well as some super cool tribal pieces! Highly recommend!
Beautiful art collecrion. The personnel is really nice and helpful.
Great place to bring the kids on the Summer and they have a handicap parking spot on York that you have to pay but the museum is Free and air conditioning and it is easy to get around in a wheelchair. Friendly and helpful staff.
Always a pleasure to come here very quite, a great place to see art up close they even have lockers so you dont have to walk around with the stuff you may have been carrying ariund the city.
Incredible museum, friendly guards - just don't try to bring in a backpack!
What a gem. I haven't been here in a long time. Quality of exhibits is.first rate, the variety keeps you moving through.
Monet, Manet, Pissarro, Gauguin, Degas, and van Gogh. And don't forget Greek vases.
This is a free gallery to get into. With a very nice collection. The British art museum is right across the street from it you can make a day of it free and cheap and educational.
Wonderful pieces of art at this museum.
Great collection of art and artifacts
Free, welcoming, and such a great variety! An excellent way to spend a day!
Great display of history
I really loved the art, but I dealt with racism while trying to enjoy it. The staff that worked in the gallery in particular.
Amazing experience! Was not expecting to see that many different well known artists. They got Picasso, Mondrian, Degas, Basquiat and so many more extremely popular artists in there. Not to meantion the historical art pieces from Ancient China and Egypt.
Just great! NYC museum's might learn a thing or two from this establishment.
This is easily the best and most comprehensive among the Ivies' art galleries, and is comparable to the more popular The Met or MOMA. The collection is vast and diverse but also well curated so you don't feel as much art fatigue as in other museums. I particularly enjoyed the special exhibition on glass, Matthew Barney's towering modern art installations, and the American decorative art and Indo-Pacific exhibitions. The European art and religious exhibitions, a staple of many American art museums, can feel repetitive and trite I skipped many sections. You can easily spend two hours here (more if you want a comfortable pace). Admission is free so you can plan to make multiple visits if you think you can't see the entire museum in one go. Don't miss the scenic views of Yale and downtown New Haven from the museum windows. The museum has a rather small gift shop at the lobby and offers lockers free of charge. It does not have a cafeteria but there are many restaurants in the vicinity if you need food (and maybe a break from all the art).
Fabulous museum. Easy to complete in one day if not a couple of hours. The British Art is definitely the stand out. This is a must see if you’re in the New Haven area.
The Yale University Art Gallery completed it's renovation in 2012. It is about four times bigger and has joined the ranks of a world class museum. It is not open on Monday but it is always free. The first floor has antiquities and African Art as well as the lobby and restrooms and coat check. The is also an outdoor sculpture garden. The second floor has Asian Art and Western European paintings. There is a split level down to the American Art and then the third floor has 20th century modern art and decorative art. The fourth floor has special exhibitions and a mezzanine study gallery. There is a rooftop sculpture garden accessable from the fourth floor. There are also print and photography and numastic departments by appointment. There is also an Pacific Art Gallery not to be missed. A great museum.
I can't believe it's free! Not even going to mention the paintings here because you have to see it to believe it!
Especially like the Temptation of St. Anthony Abbot a 15th C panel being tempted by the devil in disguise! Holbein, Hals, and many other notable artists in the collection. Interesting coin collection. Wonderful light filled passageway gallery for sculpture too. Architect Louis Kahn designed the main lobby building.
Interesting museum with art for all. There are many decorative art pieces including silver and china. Asian Art and antiquities are abounding. My only problem was the lowness of the placards which were difficult to read. I understand it’s to respect the handicapped but a few inches higher would help average height people and still be of benefit to wheelchair users. I hope I haven’t offended anyone and if so, I am very sorry.
I've been too several galleries located on campuses throughout the country...Yale's collection is truly amazing.
This gallery is quite the museum. A very diverse and unexpectedly large collection. Was so glad I visited twice with my family and hope to return!
That's simply amazing. Real treasure preserved very well
Wonderful museam..old and new
A truly great and inspiring collection.
Take the kids. Great day for any age
Always wonderful! To stand in a small room surrounded by Vincent Van Gogh, Monet, and other great pieces of art work, up close is inspirational!
They have so many cool exhibits here you can see. It looks like they cover art through the ages from all seven continent's. If you are in Connecticut, then this should be on your list of places to check out, especially since it's free.
Better than we expected. Van Gogh, picasso, ancient sculpture and coins all beautifully displayed.
It’s free and tons of unique pieces and arts
They had an amazing exhibition about Matthew Barney and it was definitely worth a visit. For the Barney exhibit, the scale, beauty , and technique of the piece showcased an excellent who is doing amazing work. Their permanent collection is also incredible and the museum is free so go visit!
The 4th floor balcony is my peaceful place. I always find a new piece I love here.
Have visited the Gallery many times. It holds an extensive collection of the worlds artistic treasures. It is compact enough for a quick tour or extended comprehensive study. No matter if you have 30 min or 4 hours come find your favorite artists or styles and immerse yourself in the Gallery. Remember it's free...
Amazing pieces of art and totally free!
One of the best art galleries I've ever been to. Awesome.
I went here for the first time and will definitely go back. Very nice place to visit. Located at the Yale Campus which we find very stunning and a joy to visit. Great displays which definitely hold ones attention and interest!! Everyone should visit here once and you will want to go back!!
Not an interesting art very knowledgeable
One of my top two favourite free art galleries in the world. The ancient art room is GORGEOUS. Just pick up a map - the levels don't all connect and it's easy to get lost!
Great and historical experience/Place
A must when visiting New Haven, it’s free and bigger than you would expect.
More than paintings on walls. This is a fantastic gallery full of historical artifacts.
This place is a gem in New Haven. Free admission, incredible art, and beautiful architecture throughout the space to enjoy.
Diverse and well kept
This was an amazing experience. Wonderful experience and we enjoyed it immensely.
Nice ambience and an accessible space.
This high-quality and diverse art collection was a delight. Free admission means anyone can duck in between meetings or after lunch. Are you nearby? Just walk in! It's ideally sized to provide an education, with each gallery giving a good overview of it's topic. The collection features work by world-class artists, including Picasso, Calder, Pollock, Matisse, et al, plus ethnographic exhibits highlighting amazing work from Africa and Asia.
Lovely museum and its free. What more could you ask for.
Excellent American art section as well as European, free admission...a must if you're in New Haven... allow yourself ample time to see it.
My first visit. Far more extensive than I anticipated. Need to allocate more time for my next visit.
Incredible, comprehensive collection. Free to the public. The highest quality art and a beautiful building.
Small, but very nice gallery featuring works from Asia, Africa, Europe, The middle east, and North and South America.Parking can be an issue, but the admission price is free. Well worth a visit.
One of the best art museums I've ever been to and it's free! The art ranges from antiquity on every continent to modern. They don't pad the wall space with fluff either, giving the impression that they have a warehouse of art waiting to be displayed. The sections on Early American, European impressionists and European romantics are my favorite.
World class collection! Rivals the Barnes collection in philly and many other museums including the Ufizzi. Truly remarkable
One of the coolest art museums I've been to. Went on a whim during a road trip, and was surprised at the how many incredible pieces of important artwork there were. Wish I had more time to explore. My favorite wings are the American and European art (mostly painting). It's an amazing feeling to turn a corner and unexpectedly run into a painting I've been enjoying for years only from photos. Also the staff were very helpful and friendly (we got lost :P )
Very cool place. Some very interesting experimental art, some very evocative. A treasure.
I normally get burned out in museums. But the labels didn't impose opinions on me, objects were interesting and obviously of high technical quality... As a result. I loved it and would go back any time.
It's huge. I got lost a couple of times. Luckily, there are employees in every room that'll help you find where you want to go next. There's art in there for everyone.
Perfect.....just go...no disappointment.
Great variety of art, however there are many staff watching everything you do.
Really impressive collection! I especially liked the American Decorative Arts. And restrooms conveniently located throughout, so much better in terms of convenience and comfort than the Louvre or the Met.
An amazing gallery with world class art. It's also in a great location surrounded by restaurants and shops.
Amazing collection of art displayed in a delightful space. It's also surprisingly FREE!
Free admission! Awesome art gallery. 4 floors with something different on each. Even some work by the classics.
I never thought that the museum was going to have so many great collection. Place is quiet and nice, unlike MoMa. And it is free admission. Check the American Gallery it is awesome. There are some famous artist too like Pablo Picasso, Van Gogh, Claude Monet, etc. And of course the huge painting of George Washington by John Trumbull. I will come back for the second time 2 days from now. Must visit when in new haven guys!
It was such an amazing place. The art there was amazing and I honestly enjoyed it.
DO NOT LEAVE THE CAMPUS WITHOUT VISITING THIS PLACE! FREE AND FANTASTIC!
It isa lovely place to visit beautiful inside and out
Very impressive collection of art and artifacts spanning centuries and continents. Housed in a lovely venue which is a mix of Gothic and post-modern architecture. I was particularly impressed with the African collection. Admission is free of charge.
The Yale University Art Gallery was wonderful. The American Glass Symposium was very well attended with glass scholars, educators, curators, and glass collectors. If you go to see the latest Glass Exhibit on the 4th floor you will long remember it's beauty and variety of forms. An A plus experience!
I was surprised at their vast collection. There is enough in the museum that you can't see it all in one day (which is fine because it's free admission). Their Modern and Contemporary section is very cool. I do wish they had more sculptures though.
Great collection of art from around the world
Outstanding, great pieces in a free(!) museum. Was lightly attended. I will certainly return.
Beautiful place with a great selection of art from different centuries and different cultures. I enjoyed it a lot and recommend everyone to go there. Bring some time though...
Probably the best free art gallery I've visited. Interesting and accessible collection with an impressive variety of genres/geographies represented. The museum's layout makes it easy to take a methodical journey through the entire collection, OR to pop in for an hour and focus on only a few wings. The architecture itself is also gorgeous - definitely check out the courtyard and the Old Yale Art Gallery building.
Gorgeous gallery in a lovely university town. The architecture is amazing, as well as their exhibitions. Plenty to eat and see outside the gallery as well.
Wonderful museum. The collection has great range and exhibited beautifully
Can't believe how big and varied this museum actually is. Something for everyone
Awesome museum! It's free and has really good artwork being exhibited!
Pretty cool and I was glad it was free. The security guards are very nice about making people leave.
Some interesting art collections spamming across the globe. African, Southeast Asia, China and European arts. American art pieces as well. Spacious gallery with lots of displays. It’s a bit cold inside so bring a jacket maybe a good idea~ you can easily spend 2-3 hours there!
It’s a fantastic museum.
Near East collection there bars none.
Didn't get through the whole thing, came in 30 minutes before close and guards started kicking us out 10 minutes before close.
About as shalp as Gallery can get, and they really take it to the next level with friendly staff and free lockers for your bags.
Geeat museum for kids. They have Stories and Art every 2nd Sunday of the month and my kids love it. Beautiful architecture as well.
Fantastic art exhibits and it's all free Definitely worth the trip to downtown New Haven
Beautiful pieces of art works from ages past. Serene atmosphere. Open to the public. More so, it's free!
Get ready for some things you'll never see anywhere in the world every artist even to a novice it is very impressive you got to go if you Go to Connecticut
Amazing collection of authentic art from many different continents
It's free! Awesome displays with so much variety, one afternoon is not enough to look at all the paintings and exhibitions. The space is open and there's some security guards to prevent you from touching the paintings but overall you're free to roam.
Go on a Sunday, free parking all around. Have an early lunch or brunch then go to the gallery as it opens and wander about for four or five hours. Come back again and repeat or go to the British art museum, really wonderful. And the art gallery is free, make a contribution if you like or just enjoy for free. Great paintings, all styles, sculpture, artifacts, you name it.
There aren't many museums where you can see history's Top 40 artists for free. Yale has an outstanding collection. Especially worth seeing is the second floor where you'll find Manet, Monet, Van Gogh, Matisse, Giacometti, Pollack, O'Keeffe, Sol LeWitt and so many more. Parking is metered on the street where you can find it. There is a handicap accessible entrance and generous elevators. No food and drink are allowed but you can take photos without a flash. Backpacks are also not allowed and purses must be on your shoulder or carried by hand at your side. The guards are very alert and ready to remind you of the rules. Overall, it's a must-see museum worth several visits. If you have time, there are many places just across the street to get a bite to eat. My favorite is Claire's Corner Copia, a vegetarian eatery (and I'm not a vegetarian - it's that good). Be prepared to wait on line at the counter where you order. Enjoy your visit!
Well done glass exhibition, not perfect and missing quite a lot of various American glass makers.
This may be the best university gallery in the country. Displays are stunning, well organized and easily accessible. The depth of quality is unsurpassed, particularly in American paintings and decorative arts. The range of 20th century paintings is enough to educate and entrall the casual observer and serious student. It's a remarkable assemblage that needs repeat visits to truly see.
Very nice gallery, they even had some Picasso.
This place was amazing because I saw pictures of Jesus
Great place. Love all the art by very famous artists
I’m so throughly impressed and surprised but the quality of this gallery. There is so much! What a great scope into the history of art !
This art gallery was fantastic! What a collection! Enjoyed every moment!
They might look strict at first, but the security is extremely nice and helpful!
Really awesome gallery. Loved it
Good atmosphere, even security can answer some questions in regards to exhibits.
A great museum with a variety of priceless works of art from many cultures and time periods. The remodeling of the museum was a phenomenal achievement!
Loved their sculptures garden. You can even see skull and bones from the fourth floor. ;)
Fantastic place. Great staff. Awesome guided tours. Go there now!
Nice art gallery in the heart of New Haven. Parking may be a bit tricky but you're in walking distance of many things such as the Peabody and restaurants.
Much larger than I thought it would be. I am not particularly "art-minded", but I was still very impressed by many pieces of their collection. I only wish I had gone out a bit earlier, an hour only afforded me a quick glance at 3 of the 4 floors.
Awesome place, best museum I ever visited
Too much to see in one day. Great place to go.
The REAL paintings of George Washington by John Trumbull are here. They also have a substantial variety of art from multiple eras. And being free makes it even more worth it, especially when you only have time for a quick drop in.
Wow, way better than expected. Will def. go back. Free admission
One of my favorite; perhaps my favorite ivy museum. It's free, so that's huge. Harvard, brown and Penn all charge to get in. Compared to to Penn Princeton and browns art museum, there isn't one. The collection is huge and magnificent. Biblical antiquities, amazing African art, modern if you're into that, European paintings and Asian art as well all well displayed. Simply great. A must visit museum.
Very enjoyable experience! Didn't have time to see it all time was limited!!
Masterpiece after masterpiece in every room including Winslow Homer and Edward Hopper and Jackson Pollock.
Amazing artwork and architecture are great. European art section well organized and great collection.
First it's free! It is pretty big. Start on 4th and work your way down. Art work by the masters, Picasso, Van Gogh, Renoir, Hooper, etc.
