Well curated collection , quiet bright space without crowds. A hidden treasure. Will go more often as it is also FREE

Jeffrey Stuewe

unique and controversial building from the outside it doesn't seem to really fit in with all yellow stomach but is that a requirement? inside what a great collection of words it's deceptively large inside to allow enough time we had a chance to do a docent-led tour which was very good and very well informed.

Marcin Abram

British Art between 1550 and 1850 is an extraordinary view into history. Everyone should visit regularly.

Lauren Kinnee

Best collection of British art outside of Britain. The museum is beautiful and well-curated.

Lisa Siegel

Went on a field trip with a fourth grade class. They really enjoyed the experience and they were allowed to sketch. They want to go again.

Dave Ekrem

This is the best center for British art in at least a 50 mile radius. They have a lot of British art. So if you're interested in British art, I can definitely recommend the Yale Center for British art. On the other hand, if you don't like British art, then this is not the place for you. You have to decide for yourself.

Veronique Valentine

Always a pleasure to visit!

Good selection!

This is hands down my favorite museum in the world. Designed by famous architect Louis Khan (his last - albeit unfinished - work), it is an architectural marvel hosting some of the most beautiful artistic gems this world has ever seen. I’d especially recommend a trip to the library hidden at the museum’s center.

Saqib Shakil

Wonderful art collection. No admission fee and art lovers heaven.

Isobel Stevenson

This is an outstanding art collection in a very cool Louis Khan building. It has some particularly fine examples of Turner and Constable in a particularly lovely corner of the building--I could happily spend hours sitting in that area. Must sees are the Long Gallery, the Turners, the more modern collection on the second floor, and whatever exhibit is on the 3rd floor. The gift shop is very pleasant. You can join the museum for free wherever you live, and they send you lovely invitations to the latest exhibits in the mail.

I've never seen so much British art in one place before! It's easily interpreted as the presentation is chronological from the top down (4th floor has the oldest art). It starts with mostly Dutch artists working in Britain, but soon progresses to the great 18th Century British artists such as Gainsborough, Reynolds, and Turner. The portraits are fantastic, as are the 19th Century landscapes. There are even modern artists occupying a fair space of the museum, most of which I didn't understand, but I did like the David Hockley stuff. A number of wonderful busts were also presented, mostly of antiquity or the 18th Century. Staff was helpful, the building is interesting, and the gift shop is good, too. All of this is free due to the largess of Paul Mellon, who also bequeathed money to the Yale University Art Museum across the street.

hamish ewart-smith

Have been meaning to visit this pearl at Yale for a year and finally made a trek to New Haven. Impressive gift shop and free entry for all who visit. Multiple floors of special exhibition and a comprehensive permanent collection of important paintings. The space is modern and offers wonderful lighting and exceptional vistas of the exhibits from multiple levels allowing the guest to view and review pieces over and over with different perspective and almost sudden surprise. The Eileen Hogan exhibit currently on view was a delicious treat into the style and discipline of an extraordinary talent.

Corey Díaz

I've lived in New Haven for years and have been to the Yale Art Gallery several times and noticed this very museum across the street and never went in; I decided to finally go and to my surprise it's free and open to the public. Beautiful, multilevel art exhibitions...Very Modern aesthetic and lovely art pieces. A must see!!

Lance Farman

Fantastic experience. It's a free museum! The staff was fantastic. The art, especially the fourth floor and the great room were top notch.

Carl Lewis

Just really beautiful. And knowing that the museum uses natural lighting is pretty cool. Go and sit and just take it all in.

Eric Pero

Love the British art! Started on the 4th floor and couldn't finish! There are so many paintings and sculptures to see. Dates back from the 1600's. We can't wait to go back to see the rest (3 more floors to go)! Free admission and highly recommended!

Rich March

Free...Free..Free...Parking is on the street and is not free. This place is huge with a elevator to explore each floor and Yale museum across the street is also Free...Free..Free

Joe Wehry

An amazing collection of British art plus rotating exhibitions, beautifully displayed in galleries naturally lit through large windows, expertly curated for a mix of paintings, drawings, photography and sculpture, from past and modern masters.

Sheila Hutchings

I don't usually like museums but I enjoyed this one. Very wide range of fascinating and beautiful art. And the gift shop is lovely.

Bobby Hannafey

ONE OF MY TOP PICKS OF NEW HAVEN!! The Yale of British Art Museum is a beautiful place full of lavish paintings of Britain! The whole place makes you go back 100 years ago to see these original pieces of art paintings and more! A MUST-GO-SEE PLACE!!

S Z

Great works of art in a beautiful space.

Tina B

Beautiful museum. Don't miss it! One of the best in CT!

Mark Schwartz

Astonishingly good art museum which is free. Tors and lectures available.

William Weiss

Time stands still here. You will lose a sense of who you are and become melded with the allegorical world of the distant past. I come away from this iconic museum feeling a connection with the ancient paintings and sculpture there. World Class in every way. Not to be missed by any person who wants to get out of their box and into the heady zeitgiest of the world.

Igor Zeiger

Great exhibitions

Kayleigh A

One of my favorite local museums. The renovations are great and the place is even more beautiful. Someday I'll take a guided tour!

Ben Slightom

An architectural masterpiece housing the finest collection dedicated to the exhibition of British works in New England. The museum specializes in two-dimensional works, particularly drawings and paintings, with some key three-dimensional pieces. An in-house archive, library, and two art-restoration laboratories transform the museum into a didactic experience and a source of innovative scholarship. Don't miss the chance to see this collection, free and open to the public—although special accomodations for use of the library and archives, as well as access to the laboratories, must be arranged in advance as all access is regulated by Yale University.

Sy Balsen

Wish an amazing gem. Besides the Louis Kahn masterpiece building, the collection is breathtaking.

Mark Lufkin

What a wonderful gift from the Mellon family to share with the community for no cost! How can you not get at least something from the experience? ART DEGREE not required but be sure to talk to the docent when you walk in the door.

Patrick Hunter

Plan on spending about a day here. Lots to see!

John Walenczyk

Quite a bit packed into this place, make sure to allow yourself 3-4 hours to fully enjoy all the art work.

Sabrina Whiteman

Beautiful space. Friendly greeters. Took a full 2 hours just to explore one floor. I recommend lunch at Olea's as a break if you want to return later in the afternoon. Free parking nearby in Yale lots if you're lucky. :)

Alejandra Mora

Beautiful building and amazing exhibition. This museum has a nice large exhibition, from classic painting and sculptures to contemporary art. The building itself it's beautiful, it doesn't say much from the outside but the interior is modern, integrates the space with the exhibitions and with the outside light. This place exceeded my expectations. Very important to notice that the entry is free.

Michael Laird

Has a surprisingly large array of British art across time, medium, and styles - at high quality. It was an enjoyable and informative morning.

amrit sinha

Open to all & set upon a building that’s historic as well as an architects delight! The collection is pretty large and you shoud spend 2-3 hours here before spending rest of your time at the Art Gallery across the street. Of a few things CT offers, the area around Yale is the very best on offer!

Irene Woloszyn Lipchus

Much more contemporary art; new revolving installations; great gift shop. Best of all, the museum is free. Take advantage of the tours. Docents are very knowledgeable. Checkout the website for details about tours.

Judy O

We were greeted right away by a team at the information desk and given a map. The fourth and second floors were open to visitors. The artwork was interesting and varied. I found the placement of informational plaques for the sculptures hard to find at first, but soon got the hang of it.

Danielle

Free to get in.. Paid to park in some side lot for $8.00... nothing exciting "art " wise.. for me anyway. This was the coolest thing i saw. If you just want something to do on the weekend for free, this wasn't too bad.

Beautiful galleries. Took about 3 hours to work my way from the top floor to the ground. Good lighting and spaces. All the artwork had informative placards on the side which mentioned historical information about each piece.

A Farsh

Free admission, nice artwork, quiet atmosphere, but I felt like I was being constantly watched by the staff so it made me feel uncomfortable.

Jeffrey Rollison

We loved it. The way the art is laid by period makes it very interesting and enjoyable. The building itself is beautiful. Hard to believe it's free.

Chunfen Zhou

Informative and organized exhibition of British paintings in chronological order. No decorative arts (if you exclude sculptures). They do have other things such as prints and drawings but most of which are not on view.

boyi LIM

Lovely place to check out some British art. Had some really good exhibits going on and it's also free!

Paperclipfog

Excellent exhibits. Free entrance. Staff around every corner with knowledge about every piece.

ANTHONY BRITTI

We visited in June, 2019. My third visit, and my wife's second. I was looking for British and East Indian convergences and Victorian and Edwardian era art. We were not disappointed. This place is truly great. Everything everyone else has said about the gift shop and admission adds to the pleasant experience of visiting the the museum.

Brandon Michael Prettyman

Beautiful art collection. Free and open to the public with multiple exhibit floors. Takes about three hours to see it all depending on how quickly you go. You need to go up the stairs or elevator to the right after you enter to reach the first exhibit floor. The public restroom is on the basement floor. Froyo is right around the corner as a treat after the museum. The main hall is sometimes used for events, but it shouldn’t prevent you from entering the museum and seeing the other floors.

Elaine Chou

Comprehensive collection of ancient and modern British art in many forms- from paintings, scultures to pottery.

Loved visiting YCBA and tour of George Shaw exhibition, with docent Mary Kee

Ruth Zeiss

What a great place to spend several days because you can’t see it all in a single day without complete sensory overload. Between the depth of art and the architecture of the building I think you could spend several days enjoying everything from primitive African head dresses to the masters to modern artists like Picasso and Pollack. Tired of culture and in need of sustainance? New Haven has some of the most varied and delicious food offerings in Connecticut. I can’t wait to go back.

Jazlyn Rivera

Great place to check out different styles of art... I would totally recommend

Kata Fésűs

One of the most uplifting museum experiences so far, there was a music concert in the centre hall, while we wandered through the galleries packed with beautiful art...

sally austen

One of New Haven-s gems. Recent renovations updated the space while retaining the spirit of Kahn's original design. The current exhibits featuring contemporary British painters is a treat.

This once so what? museum, that wasn't even woth an hour of viewing, has been renovated;into an institution-in which one could view five centuries of authentically British Art. This even includes,a considerable amount of very current 21st.Century,British Art. Allow, two-hours or more, for this improved museum.

Iain Wright

Excellent

Janette Wedlowe

This is a great place to visit if you are in New Haven and its free!

jay kim

Being starkly contrasted to a humble exterior, it was an amazing experience inside with dynamic light, playful material choices, and straightforward floor layout, together which have not been outdated at all since the time the building was first opened in 1970s.

Another hidden gem in New Haven is The Yale Center for British Art. It is free public art museum and research institute that houses the largest collection of British art outside the United Kingdom. Presented to the university by Paul Mellon (Yale College, Class of 1929), the collection reflects the development of British art and culture from the Elizabethan period onward. Admission is free! A masterpiece architecture by Louis I. Kahn. The Building alone is worth making the trip and I think it is the Center’s greatest treasures. Opened to the public in 1977, the Yale Center for British Art is the last building designed by the internationally acclaimed American architect Louis I. Kahn. The structure integrates the dual functions of study center and gallery, while providing an environment for works of art that is appropriately elegant and dignified. The building stands across the street from Kahn’s first major commission, the Yale University Art Gallery (1953). Located in downtown New Haven, the Center is near many of the city’s best restaurants, theaters, and shops. More about the architect: In his bio it is mentioned that Louis Isadore Kahn was born into a poor Jewish family in Pärnu, formerly in Russian Empire, but now in Estonia. He spent his early childhood in Kuressaare on the island of Saaremaa, then part of the Russian Empire's Livonian Governorate. At the age of three, he saw coals in the stove and was captivated by the light of the coal. He put the coal in his apron, which caught on fire and seared his face. He carried these scars for the rest of his life. In 1906, his family emigrated to the United States, as they feared that his father would be recalled into the military during the Russo-Japanese War He was a design critic and professor of architecture at Yale School of Architecture from 1947 to 1957. From 1957 until his death, he was a professor of architecture at the School of Design at the University of Pennsylvania. Kahn created a style that was monumental and monolithic; his heavy buildings for the most part do not hide their weight, their materials, concrete, wood, metal, or the way they are assembled. Famous for his meticulously-built works, his provocative proposals that remained unbuilt, and his teaching, Kahn was one of the most influential architects of the twentieth century. He was awarded the AIA Gold Medal and the RIBA Gold Medal. At the time of his death he was considered by some as "America's foremost living architect." In 1974, Kahn died of a heart attack in a restroom at Penn Station in Manhattan. He had just returned from a work trip to India. Owing to police miscommunications in both New York City and Philadelphia, his wife and his office were not notified until two days after his death. I wonder if my other favorite architect Tadao Ando who was self taught, was influenced by Louis Kahn. Tadao Ando worked as a boxer and a truck driver before settling on the profession of architect, despite never having formal training in the field. The Chichu Art Museum is a museum built directly into a southern portion of the island of Naoshima in Kagawa Prefecture, Japan is definitely worth making a special trip to Japan.

Joseph Janiga

Excellent museum with quality exhibits. A beautifully designed and executed building.

I’d love to spend the full day appreciate each art piece. Loved all the oil paintings. The details are mesmerizing.
