If you like art, specifically paintings you will love the place. Actually it's worth a visit just for the architecture. There are masterpieces here that predate the birth of our country. No visit to Connecticut is complete without a stop here, at one of the oldest museums in the nation. If you have a B of A card you're in luck since this is on the 'Museums on Us' list.
Impressive collection of everything from the old masters to modern art. We spent 4 hrs wandering the halls and could have spent another 4! Fun, interactive exhibits and kid friendly activities found scattered across the museum's 4 floors and multiple (connected) buildings. Frequently rotated exhibits mean repeat visits are never boring. It's worth making plans to see!
This place is spectacular! It has everything I imagined a museum would have AND THEN SIME! The workers are very nice and very helpful. I will visit many many many more times. Spent 2 hours there and barely scratch the surface. If you're going to go, plan a WHOLE DAY FROM OPEN TO CLOSE.
Great place to watch a great show.
Even though we are members of the museum and visit it often, we decided to take one of the guided tours and we were happy that we did. The tour highlighted some of the treasures in the museum like the recently acquired Poppies by Van Gogh and the beautiful La Vecchio on loan to the museum. Just a wonderful museum that we love to visit over and over. I would highly recommended these guides tour talks.
Perfect day trip! We got a free pass from our local library. Beautiful and famous pieces of art. Highly recommended.
The Wadsworth Atheneum is a beautiful museum that has a well-curated collection and an inviting atmosphere. I went here with my family for a day trip and we all enjoyed the variation in the art, ranging from contemporary to antiquities. Highly recommend.
Wonderful tour with Sara. Bistro cafe was wonderful and very accommodating. What a treasure in downtown Hartford.
What are the world's famous museums
Diane was a friendly & knowledgeable guide & even though the space of any museum is not terribly kid friendly, it was amusing to keep 4th graders quiet. The Atheneum does have some neat exhibits, famous artists' work as well as some R hard 2 grasp your head around.. kids would paint some better I think quietly....
A beautiful museum. Great tour.
Went to see the recently authenticated Van Gogh and was really impressed with the museum, collections and staff. Worth taking the time
What an awesome place to see great artwork - historically significant one! A very nice museum to visit with friends and family and yes kids - this place is kids friendly and its such a nice learning experience.
the most culturally significant place in hartford.
It was good. Went for school trip
Went for MLK day celebration. I want to go back and check out the library. Free admission for Hartford residents. Many exhibits to enjoy.
It's amazing to have a place of such artistic value close by to bring grandchildren, out of town guests to welcome them to the area.
There was so much to see here that I went out for a quick lunch and returned to see more. Though famous for it's collection of Hudson River School paintings there is a lot more to see. The building is oddly broken up so get a map or you will miss some. I recommend parking in the garage listed on the museums website and get it validated on the museum to avoid expensive parking in the city.
Love this collection! Really fantastic museum with a large variety of piece from all over. It was great going there and they were part of the museums on us from BofA!
Great visit in the last day of surrealist exhibit .
I only wish more people knew how glorious this museum is. Looking forward to the many trips in the future. My family loves the Welcomed Hartford campaign they have now where Hartford residents are provided free admission.
The Wadworth is a marvelous museum.
I used to live in Connecticut and was an ardent Member. I would never visit the Connecticut area without a visit to the Athenaeum. I consider it a beacon for the arts for me!
A must-see sight for New England tourists and locals alike! Not only is the building breathtakingly beautiful and filled with world-famous artwork, the staff are very friendly and attentative to making sure you enjoy your visit and find everything easily. I've dragged at least a dozen people hear and everyone loves it. Make it on your list of to-do activities!
Fantastic for family outings and great for date nights. Check out the events, the staff keeps things fresh with a lot of engaging topics and themes.
Amazed at the number of artistic pieces. Get there early cause you are gonna spend some time.
Beautiful old museum, great collection, very affordable admission. The current Surrealism exhibit is well curated and a rare opportunity to see amazing examples of the movement together. So happy I went!
Great visit. Van Gogh, Monet, Manet, Renoir, and many more. Not a fan of modern art. But if you like it some pieces were interesting. We took the guided tour. It was ok. If you take the tour just ignore some of the personal views of the guide.
Just go. It's a gem. It has a fantastic collection. The food is good, too. Nice staff.
This museum does not get enough credit for the caliber of museum that it is. Full of significant works in historic buildings. The temporary exhibitions are often on the cutting edge of the art scene, and the programs that they provide open up the art world to the larger community.
This place is so much fun
The museum comprises a traditional building and a modern one, and has a vast range of beautiful pieces of art. You can find pieces by the likes of Picasso, Pollock and Dali, and enjoy different types and styles of fine art. The restaurant is perfect for a meal or light refreshment and offers great food with great service. A wonderful place to spend a day.
Very nice the Museum of Art. Recommend to book their tour in advance.
Awesome jazz brunch on Easter! Thank you
terrific- 1st public museum- a short walk to our office- outstanding venue for culture
Great selection of art
A great place for any age. It's surprising large, covering three floors and there is something for everyone.
I love all the portrait paintings in this musuem, I can spend the whole day in here!
Oldest museum in America. That does mean stuffy. Recieved a great many objects from J P Morgan and has acquired many many more.
Went here with some friends. Has a wide selection of art.
The Wadsworth Atheneum is a fine mid-size museum with interesting exhibits and a good permanent collection spanning centuries of art, but, if you've experienced some of the renowned museums of the world, it may be a bit of a letdown. If you're from out of state and find yourself in the Hartford area, it's worth a visit.
Excellent small art collection covering European, American, and Asian, from ancient to modern. Some of the finest works of the Hudson Valley School are among the highlights. Well worth a stop if you're in Hartford.
Friends recommended we visit it and it was wonderful. I just wished I could see their watercolors that were not exhibited, but it is nice to have something to look forward to for the next visit. Their exhibit on Church, his travels in the Middle east was spectacular.
Very nice informative and fun for all ages....
You wouldn't expect such a well thought-out and extensive collection to be in the city, but it is honestly a must stop even if you are in Hartford for 24 hours. I will say the layout of the museum makes it a bit hard to navigate and see everything, but this was the only negative aspect about the location. Otherwise, this museum has attentive security/staff and has great exhibits.
Beautiful fusing of two buildings housing some very beautiful artwork! I love the American Art and Impressionist Paintings. The Modern Art was also well represented. The last hour of the day is free but an hour really isn’t long enough! It was a great experience!
Incredible exhibits from all over the world. Amazing works of art everywhere you look. And incredible Saturday on their free Second Saturday program. The whole family found works of art they were drawn to. Amazing amount of local history.
The play was awesome
Very beautiful and peaceful
We're talking world class art museum right here in downtown Hartford, CT. Amazes me that our own resident's allow year after year, feature expositions, coveted works secured repeatedly and our citizenship walks, rides by and dare not to enter this adventure in paintings, art works, and highly sought after famous works that are second to none. Don't you and your family be guilty of voluntarily ignoring a very important aspect of well roundedness in education and culture by letting another visiting artist works or 1st class social being held at our place. Be there soon and leave asking yourself, "what took me so long". Best outing for your families cultural development awaits. Cost? Many exhibits are FREE, esp. for Hartford students and residents.
Went to the theater works play there. Small theater good place to see a play
I love it! Educational, fun, amazing, interesting, unique. I need to go back.
Wonderful museum, a crown jewel of Hartford and Connecticut.
I haven't been to the Wadsworth in a long time, but it truly is a great place to visit. They have a lot of interesting exhibits there and it is free to visit from 4-5. One of Hartford's best cultural things to do.
Very excited eclectic art. Great.
"The Russell"love and respect my boy Hugh
Good food and good service
First art museum in the United States. Free for Hartford residents.
Best place to catch a show and look at art at the same time!
A stellar art museum with pieces spanning thousands of years and representing cultures from around the globe. Whatever your taste in art - from ancient sculpture to impressionist paintings to contemporary pieces - you can find something to appreciate in this museum. I highly recommend the Wadsworth Atheneum and it is one if not the top attraction in Hartford. The museum has such a wide array of pieces it can be almost overwhelming, and I found the tours (free with admission) to be a great way to get oriented!
It's nice an the galleries are Terrific
Spectacular museum. So many stunning collections. I was there for the ancient art collection and it was fascinating. The gift shop has many unusual and interesting things, I spent an hour looking at all of them.
Pics speak louder than words
Fantastic museum and a nice theater.
This place is a gem. They have the largest collection of Hudson River School paintings in the world which makes this a must visit for any fan of American art. If you are a fan of art in general you really need to come here.
We were here for three hours! The collection is impressive for its volume, diversity, and scope and the museum itself is quite notable for being the oldest public art museum in the country. With so many art pieces to look at, the experience can be overwhelming so plan to have mini-breaks in between galleries. Be sure to also grab a map at the entrance to help you navigate the labyrinthian space. Street parking is available nearby and we didn't have any difficulty finding a spot on a Sunday morning.
The matrix gallery is always featuring a new contemporary artist. The museum has a large Hudson River School collection, nice landscapes. I enjoy the parts of the collection showing Hartford history, like the stuff from the Colt family. Be sure to check out the audio tours.
The oldest continuous operating art museum in the US. The museum buildings and grounds reflect the gilded age of the area, when industrialists who built factories, brought wealth and arts back to their towns for their people. May be the proximity to Boston, this museum is often overlooked. You will find European and American arts over many periods here in its permanent exhibits. Most of the important periods are well presented. The rolling contemporary exhibits are well thought out and laid out beautifully throughout the years. The museum location is conducive for exploring many other attractions of the area. Family can easily spend 3-4 hours exploring this museum. One of a must stop in Hartford.
For the amount of artwork this place contains, many of which are by famous artists like Picasso, Van Gogh, Pissaro, Monet, Dali, Lewitt, it does not get enough credit. It also has many contemporary and classical pieces. It's unexpectedly large, and so underrated.
Lovely docent added so much to our visit. The guards were friendly and fun and the collection is impressive. Definitely worth the trip.
Food was very good by staff not very friendly beverage machines didn't work properly
We saw the wonderful surrealist exhibit and several rooms of the permanent collection. The exhibition was well hung and perfectly lit, which is truly remarkable given the wide variety in sizes and media on display. The museum was immaculate which was also remarkable given the number of people traipsing through it. The only real challenge was finding parking, which took about 15 minutes. Still definitely worth the effort and time to get their.
I love this museum. Oldest Art museum in the nation, and just a beautiful space in a vibrant part of town. Parking can be tricky, but totally worth any hassle. I try to come here as often as possible. Exhibits change frequently and it 100% transforms that part of the museum. A great collection, really. The Great Hall is just stunning. Plus, area students and Hartford residents get in for free!
Nice place
Cultural gem in a misunderstood City. The Wadsworth has so much to offer with it's deep collection of art, antiquities, sculptures, and theater. A must visit while in Hartford or driving through. Make a stop, discover a gem.
This place gives me great joy every time I visit it! Amazing exhibits!
Great art, nice layout with lots of light. The restaurant inside is also wonderful! The setup of the museum is easy to figure out. Be sure to grab a map, and then have fun exploring! You can also get your parking validated, so parking is less expensive!
Every nice place to be
Truly an incredible museum, I honestly loved every part. Such a diverse collection of art from around the world and throughout History. The Morgan Great Hall was a completely breathtaking sight.
Great selection of art from all different time periods! Beautiful building as well, and conveniently located right downtown.
Today I went with my daughter and her school class to the museum! I was very impressed with the museum staff super friendly our guide Ginger was super nice in explaining to everything to my daughter. The exhibits were nice the gift shop was very cute with many wonderful gift ideas. Then we decided to go the museum restaurant called the Bistro that is within the museum. I would never step foot in that restaurant ever again! The staff seemed very bothered to help my daughter who is in a wheelchair into the restaurant with there lift system. Then the manager came over and told me very rudely my daughter who has food allergies and sensory to food items she could not eat her outside food in his restaurant! It was only fruit and cheese mind you myself included with the rest of my table did buy food from the restaurant so we weren't eating for free or anything. I really think they should educate themselves a bit more on how to treat people with special needs and make them feel a bit more welcomed!
You can get the free pass for the tickets. Option 1) Bank of America offer free passes and first weekend of each month. Options 2) most local libraries has free passes can be checked out
A gem of an art museum..An up close and personal exhibit of everything from early Greece to today. The pottery and porcelain are exquisite.
World class collection of art. Fantastic contemporary program and also decorative arts and furniture.
American art , middle size and nice museum
Looks fun but I have never been there before.
Quite an amazing place and collection of renown art. A vastly under appreciated treasure of Hartford.
It was pretty here. I went at night to watch the water spouts.
The Black History tour was great.
Weekdays 4-5 is free admission. I arrived in Hartford around 4, so I had just a quick visit. The Tap on Wadsworth website gives interesting short recordings about selected works. I enjoyed a few galleries, especially a great George Innes work "Autumn Gold." Gift shop was fun to quickly browse. I'd like to come back with more time. By the way, there are free lockers, where I stashed my heavy daypack.
The collection of art will astound you; and from a museum you may never have heard about! I live the Hudson River School collection.
A great museum and a must-see in CT, very nice collection inc. Picasso, Chagall, Magritte, Miro and more. Unexpected and really nice. Have a rest at the café it's worth it as well. The staff in the museum and the café are great too! Well done and keep up the great work everyone!!
Always a wonderful experience. Learn something new each time.
This was a great afternoon visit and best of all free 1 hr before closing, enjoyable afternoon
Good place where one can spend couple of hours. Some of the artifacts are supported by background which helps better appreciation of the art
Nice old charm of a place
Great place to take your children... .
Nice gallery with a world-class assembly of rotating exhibits. Parking can be a bit tricky.
Two of my friends and I went to this museum for a school project and were followed from exhibit to exhibit by multiple security guards for absolutely no reason. We were also continuously stopped and interrupted from enjoying the art by several security guards. We did not feel welcomed at all
I loved the amount of art here! And it was all placed so well. My husband and I also came during the second Saturday event and admission was free. There was a lot of activities for children throughout and while we don't have kids of our own we are going to recommend it to our friends who do.
Amazing place. Spent there more than 3 hours with open-wide eyes and still impressed. Very good memories.
Wonderful exposition. Great atmosphere
Absolutely beautiful. Much larger and nicer than I gave it credit for.
Great range of art here. Beautiful gallery and nice/super helpful staff! I’ll be back for sure!
They wanted to charge to get in to use the bathroom
Great museum. Very informative, wide variety of works!
This is a beautiful and totally unexpected GEM. The way the artwork is displayed in the Morgan Gallery is in the grand manner of the best museums in Europe, and thru out there is a beautiful representation of many great masters. This museum overall is a second tier collection that is excellent. There are pieces, of course, that ARE first tier, such as those by Klimt. Of great interest is the magnificent Artemisia Gentileschi’s “Self-Portrait as a Lute Player” (ca. 1615–18). It is good for to see female painters whose work survived. There is on display a solitary gown by Parisian design house Worth believed to have belonged to Countess Sophie Petrovna Shouvaloff Benckendorff (1837–1928). One need not see more than this one gown, it is a museum of stitchery in and of itself! We had lunch at the very chic Cafe which is really a full sit down restaurant. The Soupe du Jour was butternut Squash. It was the best I have ever tasted... and I am a bit of a nut about butternut. We found the Bookstore to be delightful, mostly because of the two young ladies who worked there with such incredible enthusiasm AND knowledge about every trinket, book, postcard with regard to how it related to an exhibit past, present or upcoming! First time I have ever experienced that in a museum bookstore! It was so cute, and so appreciated. How rare these days that ANY salesperson has passion about being at work, about looking the customer in the eye! These two ladies get A+. Regarding tickets: Local libraries give free admission passes to this wonderful museum.
Beautiful place with a lot of beautiful art. Worth exploring. We had a splendid time and we only made it through one floor.
CT Lyric Opera performed Verdi's Don Carlo in the Morgan Great Hall, surrounded by classic paintings from the permanent collection. A great afternoon!
Well kept, nice collection, and they have tours.
Great museum-- lots of contemporary and modern stuff. Easy to park. Not so big that you get swallowed up, but you can spend a day and not be too tired for drinks and dinner afterward.
So many great collections
One of the best art museums in New England. They have an amazing collection. From rustic furniture to surrealist paintings. Well worth the price of admission.
Such a beautiful museum.
Wasn't there long
Love this place here gone on filed trip here love it
This museum was very impressive. It had a little of all the well-known artists as well as lesser knowns and contemporary pieces. It was easy to navigate, the guards were very knowledgeable and there were even docent tours in session. It's definitely worth visiting.
This art museum is not encyclopedic in scope (mostly European and American artworks, with some objects from the Antiquity and a very small Asian gallery) but the quality of its collections is superb. Beautiful architecture as well.
Loved the variety of the pieces and could spend all day there
Marsden Hartley's painting was great. I had seen it on loan in Montreal years before and was thrilled to find it here. There were so many great pieces of Art here. I had no idea.
It is always a fun and interesting museum to go to They always have new exhibits and the staff is always polite and actually are interested in helping you if you haven't been here you should put it on your to do list .
The Wadsworth is the best medium-size American city art museum we've visited. Covers the range and has some real gems.
Beautiful museum with fabulous exhibits. A must see when visiting Hartford, CT.
Free for Hartford residents..... Hudson River school collection.
The Wadsworth always has something worth seeing. The variety there is refreshing. I love the Baroque section and the collection of contemporary artists is a feast for thought. Only draw back is the on street paid parking.
Good history lesson for first visit to Connecticut
First class art museum with master piece of collection.
I love this museum. It's a gem, that flies way too far under the radar. They have some wonderful pieces. If you're I, the Hartford area go. If not, plan a trip. You won't be sorry.
Great family activity.
Wonderful exhibits. Worth a shot. Parking on the street as well.
Hartford is an old city with a lot of firsts, the museum is one of the oldest, I went twice once oddly to see all the guns colt firearms (another Hartford landmark) produced over there years in existence, they had general pattons ivory handled revolvers, matched set engraved, the colt 1911.45 a firearm still made today, old colt western pistols , even a matched set of colt dueling pistols, the museum is smallish but from time to time they bring in the big guns, my second visit was for the cavajio exhibit, he is my favorite old master, his realism is incredible mostly religious paintings with a bit of violence it's like your there watching it happen, they have been refurbishing the museum for the last few years and I have not been since, if your in Hartford you should visit.
Perfect. Go there if ever you have an opportunity.
better than expectations
Always changing great exibits. An amazing permeant collection including Vangoh and Monet. If you love art or are just art curious do yourself a favor and visit the Wadsworth you will be glad you did.
Definitely visit here! This is one of the best museums I've ever been to. It has a wide collection of various artists from classical masters to Modern Art that will thrill any and all art lovers. Definitely plan to spend all day here. If you arrive at the opening of the doors and stay until they tossed you out, you could see quite a bit of all the art and have a wonderful time all day long. If you have the opportunity, definitely make a multiple day trip to this museum. I keep coming back here for the Thomas Cole paintings and the other wonderful Hudson River School artists. Frederick Church and other masters all congregate in one gallery that is a wonder to behold. One of my other favorite galleries is the Morgan 1 Great Hall. It's laid out like a gallery that you might find 200 years ago with paintings stacked from the floor to the upper reaches of the ceiling. There's such a wide variety of different artists and styles of European art, so be sure to grab one of the guides at each end of the hall so that you can learn more about all of the paintings gracing the walls.
Love second Saturdays free admission and activities for the kids. The volunteers are awesome, the staff wonderful even the security guards are pleasant and welcoming
This is the oldest continually operating art museum in the United States, and it's right in the heart of Hartford. It's $15 to get in, or free if you're a Hartford resident, and there's a days worth of things to see. From Van Gogh to Pollock, pieces from the 1600s to present times, there's something for everyone. I highly recommend going when you have more than a few hours to spend.
Wonderful art gallery with wide range of exhibits. Free tours and talks with knowledgeable guides
Beautiful museum with mangy exquisite prices. Well worth a visit
Was visiting my parents in CT for the holidays and decided to stop by the Wadsworth. Was pleasantly surprised by the collection of surrealist art. Little museum that packs a big punch!
Fun museum with tons of exhibits, had to rush through but saw most of it in an afternoon; discount tickets for students
One of the worst museums that I have ever been to
Have always loved coming here. The best is coming for events and they have a ton of deals for Hartford residents.
It's got art and a good variety of it. What more do you want? If you like looking at cool stuff and being in a good environment to do so then go here and spend an afternoon.
The oldest art museum in Connecticut. It is worth a visit.
Small but EXQUISITE library. The standouts are the hard model roman figures throughout the library. It possesses a very old, but charming feel. Very cozy and strict quiet for reading and work.
The Wadsworth is a real gem! They have great student rates (and it's free for UConn students) and they have a really wide selection of stunning pieces!
Great selection of art- everyone is sure to find something they enjoy here.
The Wadsworth Atheneum has a very nice display of donated creatively decorated holiday trees for several weeks during the early holiday season. Don't wait to see this; it will be over and gone before you know it!
We went to the Easter Jazz Brunch at the Athenaeum and they ran out of food before we got to the buffet table. No ham, no sausage and cold French toast. The buffet was not replenished. Not a good experience ...............We received a refund.
The staff was very helpful the exhibit of hopper was very and In lightning. Very pleasant time we had at the museum that day.
Visited recently for the art and florist exhibit, where area florists design an arrangement to complement a painting or other artwork on display. It was beautiful and added an extra touch to our visit. They also had different choral groups performing throughout the weekend , and they were very good. It is easy to park in the Front Street garage and walk to the museum, where they validate your ticket in the gift shop and we only paid $3.00 to park.
America's oldest art gallery? Yes. There are some amazing pieces of art that you wouldn't expect to find in little old Hartford here. Also, go for the festival of trees, it's a wonderful holiday event.
Makes for a great lunch trip. Its big but not so big that you dont see everything. Chill staff.
They have a mummy.
My Graddaughter received a art. Certification there and one of her classmate and many more at her school
Loved the flower show that complimented the art!
Amazing collection. Great museum shop. Fantastic restaurant.
