If you are an avid fan of modern/post-modern architecture, a fan of the arts or a history buff, the glass house is the perfect day trip experience! The two hours tour was excellent, but I recommend splurging and going on the three hour tour.
Amazing architecture, landscapes and art. Simply beautiful.
Really enjoyed my experience here for the following 2 reasons: (1) The Glass House really looks as pictured, absolutely beautiful. The entire property is worth it just for it's natural beauty, not only the cultural value. (2) The tour experience was wonderful, the tour guides were experienced and passionate. So much so they were having other tour guides sit in on tours so they could improve their skills. Yet the tours guide knew more than anyone could imagine, and were experienced in this field of architecture. Lastly, it is also very easily reachable by the train, the train stop is right across the street from the visitor center, and they take you buy bus to the property.
Fantastic tour of the buildings and grounds of the Glass House. Recommended to anyone interested in modern art and architecture, especially New Canaanites that have "driven by 100 times but never went in".
The most delightful museum - a real gem!
Amazing experience and interesting guides. The site is wonderful and the house and other building too. Highly appreciated this experrience
Great architectural tour! Highly recommended.
Mr.Johnson was nice to see.
Highly recommend!
Legacy of MoMA curator and architect Philip Johnson. Fantastical architectural landscape park with multiple architectural structures among them the Glass House, the brick house and several gallery spaces. We took the Glass House and Galleries tour which was great, but would recommend even more extensive tours.
Such an amazing estate filled with architectural pieces. The whole plot feels great to walk in, and the guided tour we had allowed us to step inside the glass house. Well worth the trip from NY.
Amazing place!!

The tour is very well organized, for the two hours, the glass house belongs to the group.
Careful of threatening staff! If you walk along the PUBLIC road in front of the house at 798-856 Ponus Ridge Rd and try to take a picture of the grounds LEGALLY from a PUBLIC PLACE, the groundskeeper will chase after you and threaten to call the police on you for trespassing. If you don't immediately leave this PUBLIC PLACE, you will be FOLLOWED closely in a way that would make some people feel PHYSICALLY THREATENED
The Glass House shows off a hint of way ahead of its time Architecture. For Architecture in the 40’s it is truly mind blowing. Staff was kind and sweet, and managed to get us to site on time.
I really want to visit this place...officially actually. As a young college student years ago I went out to see this house for myself and I was lucky enough to drive through the gates that were left open. As I turned the corner I came up on the Glass House with Mr. Johnson sitting inside reading the newspaper. He turned and looked at me and I wasn't sure what to do so I floored it and got out of there. To this day, I wish I had the nerve to knock on the door but oh well...I saw a legend in person at least!! :)
Fun place to visit, interesting architecture and good tour guides. If you're in the area, definitely worth checking out.
Great experience!!!
LOVED THIS!! The tour was excellent. I thought I would be underwhelmed but it was a really great tour if you love design!

You need advanced reservations to go. Did not get to see it
Wonderful
Must see to believe
Better than I expected.
Philip johnson's. Enough said.
2 stars. It was closed.
Highly recommend to those who are intrigued by retro / modern, minimalist architecture.
Visited during Yayoi Kusama's Dots Obsession exhibition. The show was a fine complement to this architectural gem. Personally I don't know how Johnson was able to stay in the house in the summer without proper ventilation, other than by keeping the doors open, what about mice and other critters wandering inside? Ahead of its time for 1949. Definitely worth a visit and you won't be disappointed from the moment your shuttle arrives at the entry gate to the grounds. Knowledgeable guides escort you from the visitor centre downtown. Worth the price of admission. Depending on your interests, you should be able to find a tour package well suited for you. Magnificent setting in a beautiful town in a beautiful state.
The Glass House is an icon of modern architecture. A pilgrimage many architects will do at least once. Interestingly enough though I was the only one on that day’s tour. Certainly the $30 1-hr tour might be more than enough for the general public but it probably isn't enough to absorb it all it and a shame to miss the other buildings. Those who are interested gets bumped to 2 hr $45 and 2.5 hr $100 if you wanted a more extensive tour of the grounds. Therefore I recommend at least the 2 hr tour. You are driven to the site from the Visitor Center which is right next to the train station so making the trip from NYC is quite easy. Everyone one is friendly and helpful. Our docent was really knowledgeable and had lots of information, historical facts to talk as she led us around. I did the 2.5 hr tour which gave some time to enjoy the buildings and photograph it but you are not allow to wander much from the prescribed path. While I understand the need for preservation of the grounds the ability to see the structures as they are indented within in the landscape can frustrating but at the same time I’m sure the snobby rich neighbor don’t want people wandering around. You never get to see the lake. The Glass house is only one of the many buildings within the land and while it might be the most important, the rest of the buildings play in the architectural evolution of Philip Johnson.
An icon. Experiencing it is very special
Good

beautifully maintained property and well preserved buildings. the glass house, while retaining its minimalist decor, has also been functioning as the inspiration and backdrop for art installations from the likes of fujiko nakaya and, presently, yayoi kusama. you can only visit the glass house property via the visitor center where a shuttle bus takes you to the actual property (it is located on a quiet residential street). well worth a visit.
Make reservations to the Glass House and its other buildings at least one month in advance to reserve a place on the tour of this famous architect's home in New Canaan and a ride on the bus that leaves from the Glass House Visitor Center on Elm Street to visit Philip Johnson's estate on the west side of town. You'll spend most of the day touring the architect's home while stopping to enjoy the magnificent works of art in the painting and sculpture galleries, works of art by themselves. Make a donation to the Glass House celebrating its tenth anniversary as a public museum. Call to take a private tour of the uniquely beautiful architecture of the Visitors Center downtown.
The Glass House is closed for the winter season. Tours will resume on May 1, 2017. Tickets for the 2017 season are available now.
A piece of architectural history. It’s more than one house and the entire collection of buildings, landscape and artwork is well worth it.
(Translated by Google) It is a facility consisting of home Glass House and other private buildings of Philip Johnson, a master of American modern architecture. When I get off the train at a small station about 2 hours from Manhattan, there is a visitor center in front of the station and it gathers at the time of appointment, the bus is on site about 10 minutes from there. I think that it is necessary for advance reservation, but because it can be done on the net it is not difficult. Local commentary is only English. First of all, I am amazed by the vastness of the site. Even if there is prior knowledge, it is a scale that exceeds your imagination. Buildings are all residential scale and usually we can not see the interior of the houses even with works of the master, so I think that it is worth going alone for the construction staff. Although there are many places of interest, the main character is still Glass House. Mr. Johnson actually lived here, and it seems that the last time passed away here. It is a building that exceeds the common sense of general houses, but actually, when I see it, I am surprised that I am distracted by fine details, and I do not mind that there are unusual places other than on the other hand. As you can see, it is a house that does not stand without the wonderful surroundings around here. The painting gallery also has a wonderful gimmick showing a picture, but I did not know how it goes until actually watching it. I think that it is a facility worth going even if it takes time.
Truly magical place. A must see! Friendly staff, very knowledgeable.
Spectacular architectural landmark. Everything about the complex is just really incredible. From the way the property is laid out to the glass house itself, but also don't sleep on the sculpture garden and the art shelter. Had a great day tour the grounds with an excellent guide. Highly recommended.
Philip Johnson masterpiece
An amazing way to see mid-century experimental architecture. From here you can see how it evolved and where it is now.
Great and informative tour and guide. Funny that the least impressive structure on the property was the glass house.
Not open during winter
Masterful.
Beautiful home on beautiful grounds, a cave full of art on a carousel, it’s just bonkers, if you’re a fan of art and architecture you gotta see it.
Great architecture. Bad experience. The management doesn’t really know how to run the place. You must pre-arrange and pre-pay your visit. Find your own parking. They won’t allow you with a 2-month old baby in a carrier. And they show you only half the house without a warning. Way too many people working there. The visit was 1 hour in this one main room, and we weren’t allowed to anything else. For $25? That’s a rip off. Philip Johnson would have not approved. In fact that is not how he intended these visits since he designed the reception by the house, and they put it miles away in the city. A disrespect to the architect and the visitors if you ask me. Go to the MoMA instead.
Classic
Beautiful setting and incredible architecture.
A must see. Original and interesting.
Visited during Yayoi Kusama's installation of Dots Obsession – Alive, Seeking for Eternal Hope - and loved it! Wished the art gallery hadn't been "closed" due to renovations but the 2 hour tour was absolutely worth the $. Looking forward to visiting again in the future!
Not much to see and a little overpriced for the privilege. However, a pleasant way to spend an afternoon.
Could not go. Need Tix 2-3weeks in advance. You leave from visitor center in a bus (13pass), you can't just show up. No parking on site.
Awesome tour, inspired spaces, great guide. I would like to visit again at different times of year to see how the seasons affect the buildings and landscape.
Fantastic place. If you like architecture or nature, please visit.
Great architects house.... Must seen location..... A great tour guided place. Wonderful service.... It's a beautiful place to see in all seasons....

An incredible experience for any modern arts and architecture fanatics out there! I took an incredible 2.5 hour tour of the property with a fantastic guide leading a small group of us throughout the property. I would definitely go back and do a self guided walking tour the next time as you only see so much depending on the tour you've signed up for. Highly recommended if you are in the NYC area or Connecticut for a fantastic afternoon out!
A must if architecture is your thing...even of not it is a beautiful home and landscaped property
Very historical
This is not only a tour of the Glass House but of the grounds which include work and art studios. The visitors' center is across the street from the train station and the guide will transport you to the site as part of the price of admission. The guide had many stories of the history of the house and residents. Their obvious pleasure in their vocation was well communicated.
One word: fantastic. Go! Go again in a different season and see the landscape change. Take a mini weekend adventure from manhattan, the glass house visitor center is about a 1 minute walk from the metro north stop in new Canaan. The grounds are stunning, and kept to Philip Johnson’s exacting standards, not to mention the glass house itself and the other exhibits you can see around the property, including his newly renovated painting gallery. Tours have to be booked in advance- check this architectural marvel off the bucket list!
Very interesting. Good day trip.
Amazing
